So you&rsquo;ll see permanent hour and minute marks on the fairly chunky bezel which, coupled with the digital clock faces, somehow draws attention to the fact that it&rsquo;s not a real watch.</p> <p>The Moto 360, on the other hand, struts around, proud to be futuristic and different.</p> <p>To be clear, the G Watch R isn&rsquo;t ugly or offensive, and we have no problem wearing it. But in practice it&rsquo;s perfectly sharp enough; you can read the time, text, and make out icons without any hassle.</p> <p>Compared to the 360&rsquo;s display, the G Watch R&rsquo;s screen fares better in most areas.</p> <p>For starters, thanks to its OLED DNA, LG&rsquo;s timepiece serves up deliciously deep, true blacks, easily besting the grey-like blacks of the 360&rsquo;s LCD display.</p> <p>If you&rsquo;ve got a black watch face on the 360, its bottom cut-off section looks even more prominent, clashing with the greyish black of the watch face. When notifications pop up it is less of an issue, though, and without this&nbsp;slice&nbsp;Motorola couldn&rsquo;t have achieved that big, modern screen with skinny bezels.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="On the ledge" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0012.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While icons and text are slightly smaller on the G Watch R&rsquo;s display, it also means that they&rsquo;re slightly sharper too, though you&rsquo;ll only notice this if you lean in close and compare the two screens in detail.</p> <p>One benefit that the Moto 360 does have over the G Watch R is its automatic brightness mode, powered by an ambient light sensor, which its LG rival lacks. In practice though, we didn&rsquo;t notice a drastic difference between the G Watch R&rsquo;s brightness setting of &lsquo;two&rsquo;, and the 360&rsquo;s automatic brightness setting.</p> <p>Both smartwatches share similarly decent readability in outdoor light, although the G Watch R&rsquo;s ambient light mode (a simplified, less power-hungry watch face that kicks in after a period of inactivity), is slightly brighter than the 360&rsquo;s.</p> <p>Overall, the G Watch R&rsquo;s screen is one of the best smartwatch displays we&rsquo;ve seen, and it makes up for its slightly smaller size and larger bezels with a sharp, readable, truly circular experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a Here&#39;s a case study: we started one work day with 100% charge, used the R throughout the day to read and delete scores of emails, plus view notifications from WhatsApp, Slack and Instagram. We&nbsp;even cranked up the brightness for a while.</p> <p>Fast forward 16 hours and we still had 45% battery remaining. Impressive stuff.</p> <p>We didn&rsquo;t bother charging it overnight, instead just turning it off then firing it up in the morning with the same 45% left in the tank. At 1:30pm the following day it still had 27% remaining.</p> <p>During this time, we set the screen brightness to two (out of a maximum of six) for the majority of the time, as it was bright enough to read everything comfortably.</p> <p>Even better, this was all with the always-on Ambient Mode turned on, which is a low-power mode that kicks in after a few seconds of inactivity. The watch face becomes monochrome (which can help extend battery further, thanks to the OLED screen), until a notification comes through or you activate it with a tap. You could further extend battery life by&nbsp;turning ambient mode off: do this and the screen will stay completely blank until the R detects that you&rsquo;re looking at it, or you interact with it.</p> <p>So while you won&rsquo;t quite get two days out of it in normal use, you probably could if you were careful. Getting one full day out of it should never be a problem - and that&#39;s more than could be said of most Android Wear devices.</p> <p>So how does it compare to its main rivals? The Moto 360 struggled to last a day with its ambient screen on in our first test. After a recent software update, battery life has increased for some users up to 45% and it now easily lasts a day no matter which screen mode you choose. A second battery-improving update is rolling out to 360 users too.</p> <p>If the thought of a blank smartwatch screen come 10pm fills you with terror, the G Watch R is still the better bet over the Moto. Still, the one to beat remains the Pebble, which can typically go for five days and even a week with light use. That&rsquo;s what we call a real stamina superstar.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/pebble-steel/review">Pebble Steel review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Refuses to die" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9966_3.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Behind the scenes at Stuff" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0024.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A watch that runs fast. But here&#39;s a primer for those of you who just want the headlines.</p> <p>One of the most useful features of a smartwatch is its ability to push notifications directly to your wrist so you know what&#39;s worth ignoring at a glance, without having to drag your phone out of your pocket.</p> <p>While it sounds as if you&#39;re only saving a few seconds, we&#39;re already addicted to it.&nbsp; The old way of doing things just seems so awkward now. Plus it stops you from offending people at dinner by constantly taking your phone out and checking it; a quick glance at your wrist is so much more subtle. Although admittedly your fellow diners are probably too busy posting shots of their artisanal fish fingers to Instagram to notice anyway.</p> <p>Most people&#39;s inboxes are bombarded with hundreds of totally irrelevant emails over the course of a week, and if like us you hate having even a single unread email count (there are those OCD tendencies again) then it can be a pain dragging out your phone every time you want to delete one. Android Wear solves that problem and helps you achieve inbox nirvana.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Watch R review" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9984_2.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="So useful" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9996_2.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-11"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Choosing to open up notifications on your phone is also a small, but very useful time saver. There are some useful ones out there though.</p> <p>The Wear Mini launcher lets you access your installed apps from a launcher that&#39;s pulled in from the left. This is far better than Andorid Wear&rsquo;s default &lsquo;scroll through a long list buried in a menu&rsquo; method.</p> <p>Another swipe in from the left brings up useful settings such as brightness and volume controls, the latter of which is unbelievably absent from Android Wear itself. Why give us the power to control music from our wrists and not the volume too, Google?</p> <p>Wearable Widgets is another handy app which ports all of your home screen widgets to your wrist. Stuff&rsquo;s Sophie Charara finds that the Spotify widget offers better controls than Wear&rsquo;s built-in music remote, which is just one of many examples.</p> <p>There are some nice watch faces out there if you hunt around, and you can even use apps to create your own, though they can be a little buggy. Established fitness apps such as Strava and Endomondo are also available for fitness fanatics.</p> <p>As Android Wear is adopted by more people, we expect to see more apps join the roster, offering more functionality and enhancing the Wear experience.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="#0nly90skidswillgetthis" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN0002_3.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Incredibly useful app" alt="LG G Watch R review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9963_0.JPG?1414159535" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-14"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hassle-free charging. Drop the R into the magnetic dock with a satisfying clunk, and you&rsquo;re good to go for charging via microUSB.</p> <p>The only thing you have to worry about is making sure the pins are on the correct side. Indeed, if it&#39;s up against the Moto 360 it won&#39;t win any.</p> <p>But that&#39;s about its only flaw.&nbsp; Its plastic OLED screen offers deep blacks, sharp text and good visibility, and it&rsquo;s completely circular. Hooray!</p> <p>Battery life is also as good as Android Wear gets right now, with the R easily lasting one and a half days on a single charge.</p> <p>Top that off with a smooth experience, delivered by powerful innards, and there&rsquo;s plenty to love about LG&#39;s latest wearable.</p> <p>So, if you&#39;re after an Android Wear smartwatch, your choice should currently come down to this or the 360. Which you should go for is a simple matter of priorities: if you want something nice on your wrist, it&#39;s the Moto; if design doesn&#39;t bother you, the LG wins.&nbsp;</p> <p>We shouldn&#39;t forget cost either. Motorola&rsquo;s decision to include an older processor in the 360 might have helped keep its price tag (including the wireless charging dock) down to a reasonable &pound;200. The G Watch R is now selling for around &pound;225 which makes it the priciest Android Wear watch you can buy, though not by much. Both cost more than a decent budget smartphone, then, with the Moto the cheaper unless you select the stainless steel strap.&nbsp;</p> <p>If forced to choose between the two, we&#39;d still go for the Moto. After all, this is an early adopter device that&#39;ll be in full view for most of the day, not stuck away in a pocket. It needs to look good. But for those of you who want the very best in smartwatch performance, the G Watch R is the new champ.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/wearable-tech/top-ten">Stuff&#39;s Top 10 wearables</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pretty in pink. But that&rsquo;s not the only big difference: there&rsquo;s also a new octo-core processor on board, and it&rsquo;s actually been designed and manufactured by LG.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The power of eight </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The ARM-based NUCLUN processor is LG&rsquo;s first mobile CPU, and features four cores running at 1.5GHz and four at 1.2GHz. The NUCLUN also supports Cat. 6 4G LTE, giving any phones it powers the ability (in theory at least) to achieve download speeds of 225Mbps. As with many lower-cost tablets, it looks pretty anonymous.&nbsp;</p> <p>Essentially, it&#39;s a small slab of plastic. No design flourishes, no bright colours. It&rsquo;s not the sort of tablet to feature in a TV advert where a man with a deep voice tries to convince you it&rsquo;s going to change your life.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s not what the G Pad 7.0 is about. Instead, it&rsquo;s practical. It&rsquo;s small. It&#39;s inoffensive and cheap.</p> <p>And, bascially, it&rsquo;s also fairly nice. The plastic of the back is silky-smooth with a slightly soft finish, there&rsquo;s not too much screen bezel and adults can hold it in one hand. It&rsquo;s pleasantly curvy.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also feels reasonably well-made. The top of it is covered by smooth toughened glass, and while it&rsquo;s not hard to make the edges of the screen ripple under pressure (and only the edges, unusually), it feels as though the LG G Pad 7.0 can withstand at least a little abuse.&nbsp;</p> <p>It comes in white and black, but while there are blue and orange versions available elsewhere these don&rsquo;t seem to have made it to the UK. Yet.</p> <p>Granted, it&rsquo;s not as flash as the metal LG G 8.3, not quite as nice as the Nexus 7. But it&rsquo;s not bad, and for the money that in itself is fairly impressive.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s flexible, too. You only get 8GB of internal storage, but there&rsquo;s a plastic flap hiding a microSD card slot on the top edge. This is a must if you want to put your tablet to work as a little movie jukebox.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Faceplant" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-5.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pad 7.0" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-8_0.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> King of the couch potatoes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pad has a hidden trick nestled next to its memory card slot. It&rsquo;s an IR transmitter, something you almost never get in a low-cost tablet. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 has one, but it&rsquo;s a bit more expensive.</p> <p>It sends out the same kind of signals as the remotes for your TV, Blu-ray player and so on, and with the help of the QRemote app, you can nudge your remotes into retirement at the back of the cupboard. You just need to teach the tablet which remotes it needs to emulate, and there&rsquo;s a built-in database which should have you covered.</p> <p>While 7-inch tablets are generally considered portable, this transmitter gives the G Pad 7.0 loads of lounge brownie points. It works pretty well, but those looking to replace an old Logitech Harmony universal remote may be a bit disappointed as you can&rsquo;t do more advanced things like macro commands. To be fair, they were often a bit hit and miss anyway.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s one more stand-out feature in the LG G Pad 7.0. It&rsquo;s not quite as good as the remote-squishing QRemote, but again it&rsquo;s about making the tablet even more useful at home. QPair hooks the tab up to your phone, letting it get notifications from your mobile.&nbsp;</p> <p>It works using Bluetooth, so your phone will need to be in range for this to work. And if you keep your phone in your pocket getting double notifications is a bit annoying. But if your life is like an advert and you drop your phone onto a wireless charger as soon as you get home, it&rsquo;s just the ticket.</p> <p>Aside from these two extras, the LG G Pad 7.0 is pretty much the sort of tablet we expect for &pound;140. But hey, in some rivals, you don&rsquo;t get any little extras.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="TV smarts" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/qremote.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pad 7.0" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-6.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Not quite razor-sharp </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G Pad 7.0 screen is reasonably decent, but not on the same level as the slightly pricier Nexus 7.</p> <p>Its 7-inch screen packs in a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution. With 216ppi, it&rsquo;s not super sharp, but it&rsquo;s also nowhere near as blocky as this tablet&rsquo;s 10-inch brother, the LG G Pad 10.1.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also no automatic brightness setting, so you have to set the backlight level manually. This is actually a bit of a pain, because if you set it too high, the screen actually looks worse.&nbsp;</p> <p>Colours also lack the pop you get from some better screens. There are a few for under &pound;200, too: the Nexus 7 and the Asus MeMO Pad HD 7 to name two. Reds look a bit muted, robbing life from the display in a way that&rsquo;s initially hard to put your finger on.&nbsp;</p> <p>The LG G Pad 7.0 doesn&rsquo;t have a terrible screen, though. It uses an IPS panel, giving you nice and wide-angled viewing, and the backlight goes painfully bright, mitigating the pretty reflective screen.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are good bits and bad bits, but the balancing acts works as the tablet is so affordable while fitting in features you don&rsquo;t get elsewhere.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 7 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Table shot" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-3.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UI makeover, stat </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Part of what makes the LG G Pad 7.0 initially lack that bit of pop in person isn&rsquo;t the actual screen, but the software. The G Pad uses the super-popular Snapdragon 400 dual-core 1.2GHz chipset seen in reams of devices from entry-level phones such as the Motorola Moto G right up to ones costing around &pound;300. For a &pound;140 tablet, it&rsquo;s the perfect fit.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also means the tablet can easily handle high-end 3D games without seeming like a wheezing couch potato whipped into running a marathon. You only miss out on a few little graphical effects in some of the more ambitious games compared to a top-end tablet, and all the titles ee tried ran smoothly.</p> <p>In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, the LG G Pad 7.0 comes out with 1138 points, which is exactly what you&rsquo;d expect from a tablet of this spec.</p> <p>This sort of power also gives the LG G pad 7.0 more than enough power to tackle Full HD videos, although you&rsquo;d be better off sticking to 720p as the screen isn&rsquo;t going to make the most of anything more detailed anyway. There&rsquo;s no good video player app pre-installed, though, so you&rsquo;ll need to seek one out from Google Play.</p> <p>Games do show up the lower screen resolution a bit, too, so if you&rsquo;re going to use the tablet an awful lot for entertainment you might want to consider upgrading to either the Nexus 7 or LG G Pad 8.3 &ndash; both of which have 1080p displays. Of course, both are also a fair bit more expensive. This isn&rsquo;t a no-compromise tablet, but it is nice &rsquo;n&rsquo; cheap.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature" target="_blank">Group test: the best cheap smartphone you can buy</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="View from the rear" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-12.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Definitely not the best camera around </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In some areas, the LG G Pad 7.0&rsquo;s dedication to plugging in features rather than specifically good features is a bit too apparent. It&rsquo;s most obvious in the cameras, because they are, quite frankly, rubbish.&nbsp;</p> <p>We could live without the rear camera on most tablets, but we still put the G Pad&#39;s snapper through its paces.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s dreadful, with a low-res 3.15-megapixel sensor, a weirdly zoomed-in lens perspective and really rather poor image quality. Unless your phone cost less than &pound;50, it will almost certainly do a better job.&nbsp;</p> <p>The front camera is better, but only because we have such low expectations of selfie cams. It has a 1.3-megapixel sensor with the same sort of grainy, undersaturated images you normally get from such a camera.&nbsp;</p> <p>Looking for excuses for LG, perhaps it just wanted to make the LG G Pad 7.0 the ultimate low-cost family tablet, and dual cameras were part of that package. If you&rsquo;re deafened by the sound of us clutching at straws, we apologise.&nbsp;</p> <p>Having said that, tablet photography deserves its very own level in gadget hell, and there should always be another smartphone or dedicated camera on hand, which you should always use instead anyway.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="You shouldn&#039;t really be using it anyway" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-1.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sound and Stamina </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;d much rather LG left one camera out and improved the internal speakers a bit instead.&nbsp;</p> <p>The two rear speakers both sit at the bottom end, which means that they don&rsquo;t provide a good sense of stereo. Not to mention the fact that they&#39;re facing the wrong way.&nbsp;</p> <p>While output is better than some low-end phones, the tone isn&rsquo;t anything to write home about either, sounding a bit harsh and thin when the volume&rsquo;s pumped up. If you want to watch a whole movie, we recommend grabbing your headphones.&nbsp;</p> <p>The LG G Pad 7.0 redeems itself a bit with its battery life, though. Despite only having 4000mAh unit, it lasts for over 11 hours of video playback. The IR transmitter gives it lounge skills missing from the Nexus 7, multi-tasking is given a lot of promotion for a tablet this small and it can pair with your phone for extra notifications juice.&nbsp;</p> <p>Needless extras? Depends on your outlook, but we&rsquo;d argue not.</p> <p>While we&rsquo;re not huge fans of the UI style, with a few little tweaks you can turn the LG G Pad 7.0 into one of the better and more feature-packed tablets available for this sort of money.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Fin" alt="LG G Pad 7.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-7-11.jpg?1413387438" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In some ways quite impressive for the money and in others very poor for any money, this is a budget tab that will suit only some</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-70/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/lg/lg-g-pad-70/review#comments LG Tablets Wed, 15 Oct 2014 15:37:21 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1450347 at http://www.stuff.tv Promoted: 5 Smart TV apps that aren't about TV http://www.stuff.tv/lg/promotion-5-smart-tv-apps-arent-about-tv/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Smart TV opens up a whole new world of content for your living room consumption. Both Samsung and LG have put a lot of effort into making their premium devices look sufficiently premium.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a level above its predecessor when it comes to build quality. Yes, there&rsquo;s still the faux-leather texture on its back (once again, Samsung: we could really, really live without this), but this time it&rsquo;s softer and grippier, while the metal band wrapped around the device&rsquo;s edges adds a further measure of both sturdiness and elegance.</p> <p>The LG G3, meanwhile, has a smooth plastic back that sort-of looks like metal, and curves nicely so that it fits better in your hand. On the front, the barely-there bezels mean it&rsquo;s almost totally Gorilla Glass 3 (also the material used to cover the Note 4&rsquo;s screen, incidentally).</p> <p>Neither phone has the premium feel of, say, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus</a>, which is a shame, but the lack of metal does keep them lightweight &ndash; and both have removable backs allowing you to swap out batteries.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" alt="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-note-4-back-white.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" alt="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-back-black.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: 2K X2 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You want a big, sharp screen? Both these phones have one &ndash; in fact, they&rsquo;re the biggest, sharpest screens around: the Note 4 packs a whopping 5.7in 2560 x 1440 AMOLED display, while the G3 has a 5.5in 2560 x 1440 LCD panel.</p> <p>While they have the same 2K resolution, there are a couple of differences worth noting. First, that extra .2 of an inch means the Note 3 has a tiny bit more acreage but a tiny bit less pixel density (515ppi as opposed to the G3&rsquo;s 534ppi &ndash; but if you can spot a difference in sharpness you have far better eyes than us). Second, the Note 4&rsquo;s AMOLED tech means its colours are a touch more vibrant and punchy. Some might find the G3&rsquo;s more muted tones a bit more true to life, of course, but the display settings are tweakable if you want to make things a touch more realistic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s really too close to call a winner here, as both phones have incredibly sharp, large screens. After we&rsquo;ve reviewed the Note 4, we might be able to declare that one or the other maintains a slight edge, but if so it&rsquo;s going to be a really, really close-run thing.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="319" title="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" alt="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" alt="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Display%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A couple of beefy blowers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The UK edition of the Galaxy Note 4 comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and 3GB of RAM, while the G3 sports a Snapdragon 801 running at 2.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. The laser allows the G3&rsquo;s 13MP main camera to autofocus far more swiftly than rival smartphone snappers, you see &ndash; and once you factor in optical image stabilisation, a dual-tone LED flash and the fact you can capture not just full HD but 4K video and you&rsquo;ve got one of the finest smartphone cameras around.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t had the opportunity to properly test the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s camera, but it has a 16MP sensor backed up with optical image stabilisation, which should make it a decidedly better performer than its predecessor &ndash; particularly in low light conditions. It can capture 4K video too.</p> <p>We have a sneaking feeling that the G3&rsquo;s laser trickery and dual-tone flash are going to make it a slightly better performer than the Note 4, but Samsung appears to have narrowed the gap quite dramatically. Multi Window returns, naturally, allowing you to multitask by running two apps side-by-side, and much of the Note 4&rsquo;s UI is designed to maximise the effectiveness of the S-Pen stylus. There&rsquo;s also a new voice recording app that takes advantage of the Note 4&rsquo;s three microphones and noise-cancelling technology to improve voice memos and interview quality. Oh, and it&rsquo;s also compatible with Samsung&rsquo;s Oculus Rift-style <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Gear VR gaming headset</a>, which is something you definitely can&rsquo;t say about the G3.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve moaned a lot about Samsung&rsquo;s love of bloatware in the past, but like LG the company seems to be moving in the right direction when it comes to loading its devices with unwanted apps.
