The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>&nbsp;is the undisputed king of the big-phone market, while the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g-pro-2/review">LG G Pro 2</a> is the super-sized version of our 2013 Smartphone of the Year, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2</a>. </p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/marc-mclaren" title="View user profile.">Marc McLaren</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Plastic vs plastic </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fans of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a>&rsquo; metal build or the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review" target="_blank">Xperia Z2</a>&#39;s glass-clad body will be left feeling disappointed with both the Note 3 and G Pro 2, but that&#39;s not to say they&#39;re poorly built.</p> <p>Both feel solid in the hands, but the Note 3 offers a little more grip, thanks to its faux-leather textured back.&nbsp;Opinion on Samsung&#39;s fake stitching is split, but some people will find it a little bit too tacky for their tastes. Alright, most.</p> <p>The Note 3&#39;s only other er, notable, design feature is its S Pen, which sits tucked away in the bottom-right corner of the handset. We had trouble removing it from its slot quickly, but that does at least mean it&#39;s unlikely to fall out on the train.&nbsp;</p> <p>The G Pro 2 looks like a scaled up&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">G2</a>, and that&#39;s because it is. The power and volume buttons are in the same position on the rear, which may take a little getting used to, but fortunately, the G Pro 2 can also be locked and unlocked with a screen tap combination if you&rsquo;re not a fan of the button placement. More on that later.</p> <p>The G Pro 2 also shares the G2&#39;s sexy slim bezels, cramming more screen into a body that&#39;s only slightly larger than the Note 3&#39;s. Coupled with its svelte 8.3mm depth and clever Mini View UI option, that means it&#39;s just about usable with one hand. Its textured plastic back, meanwhile, is a big improvement over the G2&#39;s slippery plastic shell.</p> <p>Both phones also have removable backs, enabling you to swap out the battery and add extra storage via microSD card.</p> <p>It&#39;s tricky to choose a winner here. We rather like the G Pro 2&#39;s rear button placement, but the Note 3&#39;s grippy back is welcome, especially as phones of this size can be precarious to use with one hand. So, honours even. </p><p><strong><em>Winner:</em> Draw</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g2/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-lg-g2-weigh/feature">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="The Galaxy Note 3&#039;s faux-leather back won&#039;t be to everyone&#039;s taste" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Note-3-back_0.JPG?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The G Pro 2 and its back-mounted volume" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG-g-pro-2-smartphone-review-back-001.jpg?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both the Note 3 and G Pro 2 have stunning full HD displays, with impressive colours and viewing angles. Both devices can record 4K video at 30fps, 1080 video at 60fps, and slow motion 720p video at 120fps.</p> <p>So far, so even. So this round&#39;s a draw, right? Not quite.</p> <p>The G Pro 2, being the newer device, has a few more tricks up its sleeve than its rival. For starters, it takes the already excellent OIS (optical image stabilisation) of the G2 and builds on it, with its OIS+ technology delivering even better performance in dim conditions. Frankly, it beats most competitors hands down in this regard, with only minimal noise visible&nbsp;in low-light shots.&nbsp;</p> <p>Results are better still in good light, matching those from the G2,&nbsp;and the fact that you&nbsp;can use the rear volume button as the shutter is a further bonus.</p> <p>Like the Galaxy S5 and HTC One (M8), the G Pro 2 also lets you refocus on different parts of a shot after you&#39;ve taken a photo. LG calls this Magic Focus, and in use it works pretty well. To get the most from it you&#39;ll need plenty of space between foreground and background - not to mention steady hands - but it&#39;s a nice feature to have.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Note 3&#39;s snapper is every bit the G Pro 2&#39;s equal in most regards. It fires out excellent images in good light, with impressive contrast and vivid colours. But with no optical stabilisation it can&#39;t match the G Pro 2 in low light conditions, and while in typical Samsung style it&#39;s packed with camera tricks, none are as useful as Magic Focus.</p> <p>So while both phones are among the best mobile snappers out there, this round goes to the G Pro 2.</p> <p><strong><em>Winner:</em> LG G Pro 2</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/25-free-apps-android/feature">The 25 best free apps for Android</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 3&#039;s snapper excels in good light" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN3119_2.JPG?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Magic Focus on the LG G Pro 2" alt="Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs LG G Pro 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%2520G%2520Pro%25202%2520camera%252002.jpg?1398263379" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G Pro 2 and Note 3 both have identical quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 brains, along with 3GB of RAM to help them run hordes of apps simultaneously.</p> <p>And, as you&#39;d expect, both phones blaze along without a problem, handling everything from hardcore games to full HD video to multi-tabbed web browsing without a stutter.</p> <p>All of which makes it all the more surprising that the G Pro 2 produced a disappointing AnTuTu score of just 20,679, whereas in our tests the Note 3 managed a massive&nbsp;34,652.&nbsp;Now real world results are always more important than benchmarks, but at the same time we wonder whether the G Pro 2 will suffer when presented with more demanding games in the future. And while we&#39;re not going to penalise it for that now, it&#39;s something to bear in mind when making your decision.</p> <p>Throw battery life into the equation and there&#39;s only winner in this category. While both devices pack a removable 3200mAh battery, the Note 3 comfortably lasts a day, whereas the G Pro 2 struggles to do the same. Maybe that slightly larger screen is counting against it here? But, like The Beatles in their mid-&#39;60s heyday, LG has already moved things on again by the time its rivals have caught up.</p> <p>Rather than just tapping anywhere, Knock Code&nbsp;lets you determine where and how many knocks on the screen are required to unlock the phone. The genius of this is that it combines the switching on and passcode in one; nobody&#39;s likely to guess that you tap it twice at the top right, once on the bottom right, once more at the top left, then twice on the bottom left to unlock it. Well, unless you now use this exact sequence.</p> <p>It&#39;s far from the only software extra here. The ability to customise shortcuts for the front touch buttons is also welcome, as are&nbsp;Smart Stay (which keeps the screen on while you&#39;re looking at it), Content Lock (which sets a second password for specific photos, videos and notes) and Dual Browser, which pretty much does what the Note 3&#39;s MultiWindow does.&nbsp;Slide Aside - which lets you access frequently used apps with a three-finger swipe - merely annoyed us a little. Oh, and like the Note 3 there&#39;s a Mini View mode which shrinks the display down so you can use it easily with one hand. Unfortunately, it won&#39;t shrink the handset at the same time.</p> <p><em>Winner:&nbsp;</em><strong>Draw</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review">Android 4.5 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Other features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We might just as well have titled this round &#39;Stylus vs No Stylus&#39;. and &ldquo;Champagne Gold&rdquo;) and, perhaps most interestingly, that it will features an always-on screen.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The always-on screen might seem like an obvious feature for a smartwatch &ndash; The Samsung Gear 2, for instance, saves power by shutting its screen off until the movement of the wearer&rsquo;s arm wakes it up.</p> <p>The G Watch will be among the first wave of Android Wear devices to go on sale, and it&rsquo;s been reported it will be available before the end of July for &ldquo;less than &pound;180&rdquo;. Now those, you&rsquo;ll never, ever want to stuff into the pockets of those tight skinny jeans - even if you&#39;re able to. And you can forget one-handed texting unless you&#39;re an NBA baller.</p> <p dir="ltr">The G Pro 2 is not in the same oversized league.&nbsp; This 5.9in device&rsquo;s slim bezel keeps the overall width to a manageable 81.9mm, allowing most people to handle it fairly effortlessly with one hand. Activate the Mini View by swiping left or right at the bottom of the screen and the downsized UI you get protects even the most phallangically challenged from thumb strain. Admittedly the off-skew 3.4in to 4.7in UI is a little off-putting at first, but it&#39;s darn useful, too.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though its 5.9in display crosses into the phablet region, its 172g weight doesn&rsquo;t have the heft commonly associated with phablets such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z-ultra/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z Ultra</a> or even the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>. The slim 8.3mm profile is another design victory, and the ease with which it slips into your pocket makes it a real winner.</p> <p dir="ltr">Unlike the earlier G Pro&rsquo;s slippery smooth rear, the G Pro 2&rsquo;s textured design provides a much firmer grip. Its physical volume and power buttons, as with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">G2</a>, are inconspicuously placed at the rear. In theory, your index finger will rest naturally on the back and instinctively reach for the buttons, but while this design worked well for the G2&rsquo;s shorter body and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g-flex/lg-g-flex/review" target="_blank">G Flex&rsquo;s</a> curved chassis, the flatter and lengthier G Pro 2 requires ET-like digits to be truly comfortable.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/sony-xperia-z-ultra/review" target="_blank">Sony Xperia Z Ultra review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pro 2 review" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20build%2001.jpg?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pro 2 review" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20build%2002.jpg?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pro 2 review" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20build%2003.jpg?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G Pro 2 review" alt="LG G Pro 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G%20Pro%202%20build%2004.jpg?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: a movie marvel </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">OLED might be the screen tech of the moment, but don&#39;t go dismissing the G Pro 2 simply because it&#39;s a standard LCD. Think Lytro, which lets you re-focus your images after you&rsquo;ve taken them. Not exactly a unique feature, since everyone&rsquo;s doing it - HTC calls it uFocus on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8)</a> while Samsung went with Selective Focus. But that doesn&rsquo;t make it any less fantastic, especially when you get to pass off as a competent photographer by creating selective bokeh effects to make photos more artsy.</p> <p dir="ltr">Unlike the more sophisticated, hardware-based One M8 system, though, the G Pro 2 requires distinct contrast between the foreground and background, and that means there&#39;s a definite knack to creating a distinct focus between two objects. If you&rsquo;re taking notes, here&rsquo;s another - you&rsquo;ll need steady hands. Even a slight movement in Magic Focus mode can screw up the focusing dynamics.</p> <p dir="ltr">That rear volume button also doubles as the shutter button, which seems weird until you take a selfie. We&#39;ve been simultaneously throwing everything we&#39;ve got at the device - at least 10 apps, including resource intensive games such as <em><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.madfingergames.deadtrigger2&amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">Dead Trigger 2</a></em>, <em><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rockstar.gta3" target="_blank">Grand Theft Auto III</a></em> and a few other basic apps such as <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whatsapp" target="_blank">WhatsApp</a>, <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.katana" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and the usual shebang - and nothing&#39;s troubled it. We&#39;ll thank the 3GB of RAM for helping make this something of a multi-tasking maestro.</p> <p dir="ltr">Playing full HD movies is even more a piece of cake for this monster of a phone. We haven&#39;t spotted any frames being dropped even when apps are punching their way through the background. Web browsing is also just as speedy on LG&rsquo;s pre-loaded browser and <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.chrome" target="_blank">Google Chrome</a> and you&rsquo;ll probably get the Road Runner experience if you&rsquo;re on the 4G/LTE network, as we are. We can&#39;t answer for that, but we can point out again that benchmarks are far from the be all and end all of power testing. Customising up to five shortcuts for the front touch buttons might sound insignificant, but it makes a whole lot of difference considering the G 2 Pro&rsquo;s unusually long body. The notifications shortcut, for example, is a life-saver. Instead of stretching your thumbs to pull the notifications menu down, a simple tap on the button does the trick. The same applies for the recent apps function, which is usually activated by tapping and holding onto the home button.</p> <p dir="ltr">We spent most of our time with KnockOn, tapping the display instead of hitting the rear power button to wake or sleep the device. For a while, it worked perfectly, until we noticed that the device came to life too easily whenever we grabbed the phone. At this point, we activated the new KnockCode which lets you determine where and how many knocks on the screen are required to unlock the phone. Caveman simple, but superbly, satisfyingly nerdy.</p> <p dir="ltr">Then there&#39;s Content Lock. This second layer of protection, located in the Security settings, locks and hides specified photos and videos in the gallery, and any notes within the Memo app, with another password, therefore protecting them from the prying eyes of partners, offspring and thieves.</p> <p dir="ltr">The likes of the QSlide video widget and Smart Stay (which keeps the screen alive while you stare at it) are still around and work well. It&#39;s light, easy to handle and fits snugly in a pocket - all rarities in the phablet world.</p> <p dir="ltr">The G Pro 2 has plenty when it comes to features, too, with KnockCode proving a particularly useful and inventive example.</p> <p dir="ltr">And on top of that it&#39;s plenty powerful, mocking its relatively small AnTuTu score by juggling mountains of apps without stutter or lag.</p> <p dir="ltr">But the battery life is a problem. We weren&#39;t necessarily expecting the sort of power-sipping that the G2 demonstrated, but we were expecting (and always expect) a full day of moderate use. Gone is the slippery plastic backside of the S5 and tacky looking faux leather of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/galaxy-note-3" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>.</p> <p>Instead, the Galaxy S5 has a rubbery matte dimpled polycarbonate rear panel which is wonderfully grippy, and much less likely to slip out of the hands.&nbsp; While we&#39;re not fans of the two-tone alien blue colour, the plain Black S5 looks and feels rather smart and is definitely the one we&#39;d go for.</p> <p>The G2 fights back with its innovative rear power and volume buttons however, and we applaud LG for cramming in a slightly larger 5.2in screen into a smaller body with super-slim bezels.</p> <p>Its screen-filled front makes it look a generation ahead of the Galaxy S5 in the design race, and it&#39;s an impressive feat of engineering from the LG camp.</p> <p>While the Galaxy S5 has IP67 waterproof and dustproof certification, overall the Galaxy S5 is no match for&nbsp;the G2&#39;s pretty slim bezelled face.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong><em>LG G2</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9966_1.JPG?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SAM_6006_1.JPG?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tasty extras </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy S5 brings two big features to the ring. First up is its Home button, which has an in-built fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>Swiping our finger to unlock the Galaxy S5 works well enough, though it&#39;s not perfect. We get the occasional failed scan, and it&#39;s clunkier to use than Apple&#39;s Tough ID home button on the iPhone 5s, which can be unlocked easily with a single thumb.</p> <p>Still, you can use your fingerprint to encrypt protect sensitive files on the Galaxy S5 and you can even use your digits to buy things online via PayPal in an instant.</p> <p>The rear of the Galaxy S5 also has a heart rate sensor. Although it&#39;s arguable how useful a feature this is on a phone (it makes more sense on a smartwatch like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-2/mwc-2014/samsung-gear-2-and-gear-2-neo-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">Gear 2</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-gear-fit-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">Gear Fit</a>), it&#39;s an extra feature for developers to take advantage of and there&#39;s no harm in having it.</p> <p>While the G2 has fewer fancy sensors, LG&#39;s Knock On feature (a double tap to wake up the screen) is arguably more useful than the ability to measure your heart rate. Once the G2 gets upgraded to the newer Knock Code variant (which lets you unlock the screen with multiple taps in up to eight different positions) then it&#39;ll be secure too.</p> <p>For pushing the boundaries and for cramming in tech into every available inch of space though, the Galaxy S5 wins this round.</p> <p><em>Winner: <strong>Samsung Galaxy S5</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div optical image stabilisation, it does offer Lytro-like post-shot refocusing, thanks to its ability to snap two shots at once at different focal lengths before combining them into one photo.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5&#39;s camera also has a live HDR mode which lets you see what a HDR shot or video will look like in real time, and its HDR shots are some of the best we&#39;ve seen.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 also throws in 4K video recording (which the G2 lacks).</p> <p>In practice, both phones offer excellent photos in well-lit conditions. The G2&#39;s optical image stabilisation does however result in better shots in low-light conditions.</p> <p>Given that many people will be snapping dark pictures on a night out, the G2 will be the preferred choice if you&#39;re not fussed about 4K video or post-shot re-focusing.</p> <p><em>Winner: <strong>LG G2</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power race </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Despite the S5 having a newer, slightly higher-clocked Snapdragon 801 innards, it still - like the G2 - &#39;only&#39; has 2GB of RAM,&nbsp;</p> <p>Benchmarks aside, both phones are snappy and fast in normal use, and there&#39;s little to separate them when it comes to fluidly running apps, games or multitasking.</p> <p><em>Winner: <strong>Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs LG G2: the weigh-in " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN9988_1_1.JPG?1398272008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android tweaks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both Samsung and LG are guilty of bogging Android down with tonnes of software extras, but some are actually genuinely useful.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 and G2 both let you lock off your personal section of the phone, allowing guests to use your device without prying into your files, folders and apps.</p> <p>The G2&#39;s excellent Knock On unlock feature is also expected to be updated with the G Pro 2&#39;s Knock Code skills which will let you tap out a pattern across the screen to unlock it.</p> <p>It worked really well when we tried it out at Mobile World Congress and we&#39;re looking forward to it landing on all of LG&#39;s major devices this year.</p> <p>The S5 however has a very impressive (on paper at least) battery saver mode which can supposedly squeeze out an extra 24 hours of battery life with only 10% charge left on the battery.</p> <p>Once activated, the menus and screen become black and white, and all apps are frozen. You can however still make and receive calls and text messages, and we can see ourselves making full use of it on a night out, stranded from any power cables.</p> <p>The Galaxy S5 also features Samsung&#39;s updated S Health app which is built into the latest version of TouchWiz. It offers detailed information on calories burned, steps taken and even calories consumed, if you can be bothered to scan in every little thing you eat all day.</p> <p>Thanks to the heart scanner on the rear you can even measure your heart rate to ensure you&#39;re not feeling too poorly. Or too excited. Or too... dead.</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s download booster mode also sounds very interesting. It&#39;s able to use both 4G and Wi-Fi connections simultaneously to download large files faster than Wi-Fi or 4G alone. For starters, it&#39;s kept the same 4.1 UltraPixel camera that graced the original One.
