Until now. Let&rsquo;s start with the &lsquo;big&rsquo; 4.7in screen. It&rsquo;s not nearly as sharp as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a> (or the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">Moto X </a>or <a href="http://site:stuff.tv sony xperia z3">Xperia Z3</a>). And a Full HD screen would be joint-first on our tweak list.&nbsp;But in every other way it&rsquo;s top-class and the pixels really do look like they&rsquo;re sitting on the glass.</p> <p>A bigger, Android-sized screen means a bigger, Android-sized body. But this 6.9mm-thick design with a seamless all-metal back (in gold, silver or black) and glossy front outclasses all bar the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One M8</a>. It&rsquo;s close to flawless. Even iOS 8 is as free and easy as Apple is likely to get. with app extensions which open up core functionalities to devs and widgets popping up in notifications.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the iPhone&rsquo;s already smooth performance gets another boost thanks to an A8 chip, the 8MP camera is faster and better than ever, and battery life increases slightly if not dramatically (that&rsquo;s saved for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">5.5in iPhone 6 Plus</a>).</p> <p>This is still Apple. It&rsquo;s still the most expensive option. Then there&rsquo;s the friendliness of iOS, the earliest, prettiest apps, the big Apple Pay partnerships. The iPhone continues to push ahead in many areas and now it&rsquo;s beaten (most) Androids at their own game.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="Could bring Android fans back to iOS" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vs Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-main_2.png?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iPhone 6 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 4.7in IPS, 1334x720 (326ppi)<br />Processor: Apple A8 @ 1.4GHz<br />Cameras: 8MP rear, 1.2MP front<br />Storage: 16GB, 64GB, 128GB (non-expandable)&nbsp;<br />Battery: 1810mAh<br />Dimensions: 138 x 68 x 6.9mm, 129g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Detail </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design - large, light and slim 9/10</strong><br />If you want the very best iPhone, you can&rsquo;t have a small smartphone any more. To help out upgraders from the 5 and 5s, Apple has made the iPhone 6 curvier, incredibly light at 129g and seriously slim. Maybe a bit too slim &ndash; the camera lens protrudes from the back of the phone, like the top of&nbsp;a tiny periscope, and we can&rsquo;t help lusting after a slightly chunkier iPhone with room for a bigger battery unit. Still an object to be precious about but, as ever, it&rsquo;s a shame to hide one in a case.</p> <p><strong>Screen - whiter than white 9/10&nbsp;</strong><br />Retina HD is here and it&rsquo;s lovely. The iPhone&rsquo;s contrast is the best we&rsquo;ve seen, colours are accurate and viewing angles are superb. Plus whites are as Persil-pure as the 5s. Want it sharper? The<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review"> iPhone 6 Plus</a> has a 5.5in 1080p screen.&nbsp;</p> <p>Double-tap the home button to bring the top of the homescreen or app you&#39;re using further down - not exactly elegant but it does help with thumb fatigue. When you&#39;re out snapping or bingeing on Netflix, the bigger screen does slurp up juice. There&#39;s no Ultra Power Saving mode here so don&#39;t throw out your Lightning power pack.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Camera - loveable even in low light 9/10</strong><br />This smartphone camera is so easy to love. It might only be 8MP but it&rsquo;s the most reliable snapper here and the fastest to open and get focus (thanks to phase detection Focus Pixels); the controls are speedy and images rarely disappointing. It&rsquo;s not capable of the manual heights of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Xperia Z3</a> but it is designed around how we take photos. The new exposure slider is genius, low-light pics look superb &ndash; better even than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">G3&rsquo;s efforts</a> &ndash; and auto HDR is brilliant. AF in video is almost instantaneous and slo-mo vids are now 240fps.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps - radical changes 10/10</strong><br />It&rsquo;s all change in iOS 8 with swappable keyboards, third-party filters in Photos and Touch ID fingerprint authentication in apps such as Amazon. Health is a neat hub for fitness data and Apple Pay (via NFC) is launching in the US. All that and the iPhone still often gets great games and creative apps months before Android does.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">Apple iPhone 6 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/10-great-apps-and-games-your-iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus/feature-0">&nbsp;10 of the best apps for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vs Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IPhone-sophie-supertest_0.png?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IPhone3.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IPhone2.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IPhone.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 2. The<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review"> 5.2in Z3</a> is good for one and a half to two days on a single charge. Standby is superb, there&rsquo;s every level of battery-saving mode imaginable and the Z3 lasts a whopping 13 hours 55 minutes on our HD video loop&nbsp;test &ndash; the best result here. </p> <p>Stamina is also the reason Sony has stuck with a 1080p screen rather than going 2K like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>. The screen is now 20% brighter and just as terrific at reproducing colours as the Z2. Zero corners have been cut. The 20.7MP camera remains one for enthusiasts with a new wide angle G lens, up to ISO 12800 in manual, and SteadyShot stabilisation for video. </p> <p>And overall performance is flawless, from fast downloads to running small apps smoothly.</p> <p>That doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s as lovely to live with as others here. The design has improved, with curved sides and a skinnier, 11g lighter build than the Z2, but it&rsquo;s still not the most ergonomic big phone.</p> <p>There are little niggles here and there too: from low volume levels with headphones to Sony pushing its subscription services. Sony&#39;s unobtrusive front-facing stereo speakers are clear and loud though when game sound effects are on full blast, you&#39;ll really feel the vibrations. </p> <p>Ultimately, the Z3 has more specialist tricks than its rivals &ndash; hi-res audio and PS4 streaming &ndash; so it should be on every smartphone shortlist.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3-compact/review">Sony Xperia Z3 Compact review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/xperiaz3-ross-1_0.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony Xperia Z3 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.2in IPS, 1920x1080 (424ppi)&nbsp;<br />Processor: Quad-core Snapdragon 801 @ 2.5GHz<br />Cameras: 20.7MP rear, 2.2MP front<br />Storage: 16GB, 32GB (expandable)&nbsp;<br />Battery: 3100mAh<br />Dimensions: 146 x 72 x 7.3mm, 152g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Details </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design - no rice bag required 8/10</strong><br />At first glance this looks like the early-2014 Xperia Z2. No hype. No queues around the block. And yet, this is one of the best Androids ever made.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s just as much to love about what Motorola has designed and refined as what it has left alone. This phone is all about making Google&rsquo;s powerful services constantly available and useful. Apart from a few extremely useful, forward-thinking apps (which are helpfully bundled together) this is pretty much pure Android KitKat. You choose what to set up. And you can&rsquo;t get faster than this &ndash; opening apps, browsing, messaging &ndash; there&rsquo;s zero lag.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s no plain Nexus, though. You could hammer a nail in with the sleek, solid aluminium build and it&rsquo;s the most customisable phone on the planet thanks to Moto Maker. The bright 5.2in 1080p AMOLED screen is gorgeous, with superb viewing angles, vivid colours and deep blacks. Plus Moto&rsquo;s Attentive Display sensors turn it off when you&rsquo;re not looking, helping the 2300mAh battery to comfortably last all day long.</p> <p>Is it perfect? Is anything? Its non-expandable storage maxes out at 32GB, and if photography is your top priority some rivals make more sense. But the Moto X is the first truly gorgeous, seriously-specced Android that puts you in control of your phone, and for that, it&rsquo;s brilliant.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/MotoXForSophie-1_1.png?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Motorola Moto X tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Screen: 5.2in 1920 x 1080 (423ppi) AMOLED<br />Processor: Quad-core Snapdragon 801 @ 2.5GHz<br />Cameras: 13MP rear, 2MP front<br />Storage: 16GB, 32GB (non-expandable)&nbsp;<br />Battery: 2300mAh&nbsp;<br />Dimensions: 141 x 72 x 9.9mm, 144g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Details </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Design - wood is good 10/10</strong><br />With plastic, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">leather and wood back cases (all lovely-looking)</a> plus thousands of accent combinations,<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review"> three iPhone options</a> starts to look stingy. It&rsquo;s worth noting that the regular black resin model is a steal but other materials cost more. This could be the first 4.7in-plus phone smaller hands find manageable. It&rsquo;s perfectly balanced and buttons are easy to reach on the right-hand edge &ndash; the power button is textured so you can identify it. The microUSB and nanoSIM slots are top and bottom, leaving the tapered sides clutter-free.</p> <p>Unlike the cheaper <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature">Moto G</a>, the X oddly doesn&#39;t have stereo speakers; but the front-facing single speaker is clear and loud enough for a bit of grime on the bus.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen - strikes a good punch 9/10</strong><br />The Moto X&rsquo;s display is on the punchier end of the spectrum, without looking too alien, but the downside of AMOLED colours is that from certain angles whites can look a bit yellow. It&rsquo;s 424ppi, so text&nbsp;looks seriously smooth.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>OS and Apps - good night, dear phone 10/10&nbsp;</strong><br />Motorola&rsquo;s always-on sensors, controls and software have really come into their own. Our favourite is the addictive, battery-saving Moto Display, showing hidden monochrome notifications on the lockscreen. Using IR sensors, the phone recognises when your hand approaches it and triggers&nbsp;up to three icons. Elsewhere, you can set up modes that&nbsp;can be turned on and off via natural commands such as &ldquo;Good night&rdquo;. Speaking of voice control, it&rsquo;s always-on, plus &ldquo;OK Google&rdquo; can be swapped for any custom phrase.&nbsp;&nbsp; <p><strong>Camera - considerate flasher 8/10&nbsp;</strong><br />A huge improvement over the first Moto, this 13MP cam takes detailed shots in good light and smooth 1080p video. Both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a> are faster and more capable in low light &ndash; though the X&rsquo;s new ring flash is slightly kinder to faces.&nbsp;The Moto&#39;s sensors let you wave to silence calls and alarms and twist your wrist twice to launch the camera - ideal for keeping your eyes on the scene.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">Moto X review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-hi-res.png?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-detail-1.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="3000" height="2000" alt="Apple iPhone 6 vs Sony Xperia Z3 vs LG G3 vx Motorola Moto X vs Samsung Galaxy A" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/motorola-moto-x-review-detail-2.jpg?1417616103" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4. This style arrives as a metal band around the Alpha and is a sign of things
to come &ndash; the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Note 4 </a>has already followed suit. The flat aluminium rim makes the Alpha feel cool and hard, where previous all-plastic Galaxys felt clammy. Edges are bevelled and a little sharp and the shape seems closer to an iPhone 5s than any Android. Most importantly, it feels solid.</p> <p>The 4.7in AMOLED display isn&rsquo;t the sharpest but it&rsquo;s bright (really very bright) with searingly vivid colours (which, thankfully, you can tone down) and brilliantly deep blacks. The home button doubles up as a finger scanner, there are tons of extras such as an Ultra Power Saving mode and the 12MP rear cam shoots consistently great snaps.</p> <p>Performance is lickety-split and software lag has been tightened up.Battery life is simply good, nothing more. The Alpha lasts a day of regular use or a respectable 10 hours on our 720p video rundown. There&rsquo;s no microSD
slot but the standard model does at least cram in 32GB.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sure, next to an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone 6</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-x-2014/review">Moto X</a>, the Alpha feels a bit of a mish-mash of materials and details. Probably, if the superb display tech remained and stamina could match the Xperia Z3.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s the biggest screen here at 5.5in but, unlike the iPhone 6 Plus, the expertly engineered body still feels manageable for all but the smallest of hands. Both Samsung and LG have put a lot of effort into making their premium devices look sufficiently premium.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a level above its predecessor when it comes to build quality. Yes, there&rsquo;s still the faux-leather texture on its back (once again, Samsung: we could really, really live without this), but this time it&rsquo;s softer and grippier, while the metal band wrapped around the device&rsquo;s edges adds a further measure of both sturdiness and elegance.</p> <p>The LG G3, meanwhile, has a smooth plastic back that sort-of looks like metal, and curves nicely so that it fits better in your hand. On the front, the barely-there bezels mean it&rsquo;s almost totally Gorilla Glass 3 (also the material used to cover the Note 4&rsquo;s screen, incidentally).</p> <p>Neither phone has the premium feel of, say, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z3/review">Sony Xperia Z3</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus</a>, which is a shame, but the lack of metal does keep them lightweight &ndash; and both have removable backs allowing you to swap out batteries.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" alt="The Note 4&#039;s pleather back is softer and more grippy than the Note 3&#039;s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-note-4-back-white.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" alt="It might look metallic, but the G3&#039;s back is plastic" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-back-black.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: 2K X2 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You want a big, sharp screen? First, that extra .2 of an inch means the Note 3 has a tiny bit more acreage but a tiny bit less pixel density (515ppi as opposed to the G3&rsquo;s 534ppi &ndash; but if you can spot a difference in sharpness you have far better eyes than us). Second, the Note 4&rsquo;s AMOLED tech means its colours are a touch more vibrant and punchy. Some might find the G3&rsquo;s more muted tones a bit more true to life, of course, but the display settings are tweakable if you want to make things a touch more realistic.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s really too close to call a winner here, as both phones have incredibly sharp, large screens. After we&rsquo;ve reviewed the Note 4, we might be able to declare that one or the other maintains a slight edge, but if so it&rsquo;s going to be a really, really close-run thing.</p> <p><em><strong>Verdict: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="319" title="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" alt="The Note 4&#039;s 5.7in 2K screen: big enough for ya?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" alt="The G3&#039;s 2K screen was a game-changer upon launch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20Display%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A couple of beefy blowers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The UK edition of the Galaxy Note 4 comes with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor clocked at 2.7GHz and 3GB of RAM, while the G3 sports a Snapdragon 801 running at 2.5GHz and 2GB of RAM. The laser allows the G3&rsquo;s 13MP main camera to autofocus far more swiftly than rival smartphone snappers, you see &ndash; and once you factor in optical image stabilisation, a dual-tone LED flash and the fact you can capture not just full HD but 4K video and you&rsquo;ve got one of the finest smartphone cameras around.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t had the opportunity to properly test the Galaxy Note 4&rsquo;s camera, but it has a 16MP sensor backed up with optical image stabilisation, which should make it a decidedly better performer than its predecessor &ndash; particularly in low light conditions. It can capture 4K video too.</p> <p>We have a sneaking feeling that the G3&rsquo;s laser trickery and dual-tone flash are going to make it a slightly better performer than the Note 4, but Samsung appears to have narrowed the gap quite dramatically. It&rsquo;ll be a close-run thing.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G3</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G3: its camera has frickin&#039; lasers" alt="LG G3: its camera has frickin&#039; lasers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g3-camera.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="16MP and optical image stabilisation: the Note 4&#039;s camera is hi-spec" alt="16MP and optical image stabilisation: the Note 4&#039;s camera is hi-spec" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-gear-4-camera.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: Two different flavours of Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Both of these phones are built on an Android backbone, of course (4.4.2 KitKat for the G3, 4.4.4 KitKat for the Note 4), but their respective manufacturers have installed their own user interfaces over the top of Google&rsquo;s OS.</p> <p>The LG G3 sports a tastefully clean UI (a vast improvement over its garish, cluttered predecessor&rsquo;s) that offers a number of useful exclusive features: Smart Clean to get rid of space-stealing unwanted cache files; Smart Notice, which is basically LG&rsquo;s take on Google Now; LG Health, which is a pretty decent fitness tracker; and the semi-sentient Smart Keyboard, which picks up on your typing quirks and lets you swipe to type.</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t yet had enough time with the Note 4 to &ldquo;deep dive&rdquo; into its UI&rsquo;s quirks and intricacies, but from what we&rsquo;ve seen there&rsquo;s plenty to get excited about. Multi Window returns, naturally, allowing you to multitask by running two apps side-by-side, and much of the Note 4&rsquo;s UI is designed to maximise the effectiveness of the S-Pen stylus. There&rsquo;s also a new voice recording app that takes advantage of the Note 4&rsquo;s three microphones and noise-cancelling technology to improve voice memos and interview quality. Oh, and it&rsquo;s also compatible with Samsung&rsquo;s Oculus Rift-style <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gear-vr/samsung-gear-vr/review">Gear VR gaming headset</a>, which is something you definitely can&rsquo;t say about the G3.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve moaned a lot about Samsung&rsquo;s love of bloatware in the past, but like LG the company seems to be moving in the right direction when it comes to loading its devices with unwanted apps. If that trend continues with the Note 4, it could end up pipping the G3 to the post here.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw for now</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The G3&#039;s Smart Clean removes unwanted files quickly" alt="The G3&#039;s Smart Clean removes unwanted files quickly" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/LG%20G3%20OS%2002_0_0.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Note 4&#039;s UI is geared towards S-Pen use" alt="The Note 4&#039;s UI is geared towards S-Pen use" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-apps_3.jpg?1411653941" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G3 is still our favourite smartphone, but &ndash; on paper at least &ndash; the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is the closest that comes to replicating and even outdoing its most show-stopping specs and features: the huge 2K screen, the optical image stabilisation, the potential for massive amounts of on-board storage (you could argue that the Apple iPhone 6 Plus approaches them too, screen resolution aside).</p> <p>We reckon it won&rsquo;t be for everyone, and it&rsquo;ll likely be a bit pricier than the G3, but the Note 4 could prove the world&rsquo;s most powerful and fully-featured smartphone when it hits the shops in the coming weeks. The design is gallery-worthy, finished with rounded aluminium corners, an all-glass back and minimalist details. But your hands might not like it &ndash; both the S5, One M8 and G3 are easier to hold than this 163g block, and picking up the Z2 from a desk can be awkward.</p> <p>It has Live Colour LED tech for punchy but accurate hues, and clear-sounding stereo speakers on the front of the phone. Our only niggle? The front is seriously reflective. For a smartphone camera, the Z2 can take incredible photos with its 1/2.3in, 20.7MP sensor and speedy autofocus.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also flies in use: it shares the same 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor as the S5 and One M8, but the Sony&rsquo;s 3GB of RAM bests its rivals. Small apps in overlaid windows lag occasionally, but it&rsquo;s still a great use of that 5.2in screen, and the Android skin is mostly clutter-free.</p> <p>With a bigger screen, there&rsquo;s a bigger 3200mAh battery, and the Z2 reliably lasts the day - with Stamina mode to conserve juice when the screen&rsquo;s off.</p> <p>Overall, this is the connoisseur&rsquo;s choice, capable of taking brilliant photos and playing cinephile video. It oozes quality but isn&rsquo;t the most practical choice. But if you have the time to show Sony some love, it will return it in large dollops.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Sony Xperia Z2 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1889" height="1417" title="The Xperia Z2 makes almost no compromises" alt="Which smartphone? Although the Z2&rsquo;s a heavy smartphone, this isn&rsquo;t the problem - the HTC weighs just as much. The issue is more that the Z2&rsquo;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&rsquo;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics count (we&rsquo;re hoping the Z2 Compact gets this right).</p> <p>Another smartphone best picked up and fondled before you decide, then. If its shape and minimalist design work for you, you can get back to appreciating everything the Sony does brilliantly. Such as being waterproof: with all the port flaps closed, the Z2 has the same IP55/IP58 water-resistance as the Z1. Plus, the headphone jack is now flap-free.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong><br />In almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner. It displays fine detail better than both the S5 and the One M8, perfect for pressing your nose up against full HD movies. Viewing angles aren&rsquo;t the best but they&rsquo;re no longer a problem either.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always produce the best images &ndash; it can struggle to expose correctly in sunlight and it doesn&rsquo;t have the night vision of the HTC. But chances are, Sony owners won&rsquo;t mind digging into the comprehensive settings.</p> <p>Here it shines: faces come out well in low light, scenes look punchy and the background de-focus mode is mesmerising. Both 1080p and 4K footage are smooth thanks to SteadyShot stabilisation, though autofocus jumps around while filming and, with the Snapdragon heating up, the Z2 can abruptly stop shooting in the higher resolution.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />Sony&rsquo;s treatment of KitKat verges on bloatware, with pushy media services ruining the fun. For instance, an upward swipe to access Google Now also shows Sony&rsquo;s What&rsquo;s New app: a feature guaranteed to have zero fans.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/10-best-apps-sony-xperia-z2/feature">10 of the best apps for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ultimate-setup-sony-xperia-z2/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="The Sony&#039;s ergonomics hold it back" alt="Which smartphone? Battery life is slightly better, bringing it on a par with its rivals &ndash; you shouldn&rsquo;t need the Ultra Power Saving Mode to last the day. But the UltraPixel camera stays.&nbsp;</p> <p>This might disappoint those looking to shoot serious images and footage, but for most, the low-light prowess and focusing tricks are good enough. Not only did it have to face the toughest smartphone competition ever, but it had to surpass its excellent predecessor, the G2, which reigned supreme at the top of Stuff&#39;s best smartphone list until the M8 came along.</p> <p>Thankfully, LG was more than up to the task. The G3 surpasses the G2 in almost every way. For starters, it&#39;s got a 2K display that&#39;s almost sharp enough to cut your eyes on. Sorry if you&#39;re squeamish.</p> <p>While the G2&#39;s 13MP camera remains, LG has thrown in laser-assisted autofocus and 4K video. And it now matches the Samsung with a removable battery and microSD slot.</p> <p>It doesn&#39;t have the booming dual front-facing speakers on the One M8, but its rear 1W speaker is no slouch, and can almost match its HTC rival for loudness, if not bass.</p> <p>While it lacks the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2&#39;s waterproof powers, its build is much improved, with a plastic, brushed-metal-look finish that will fool your eyes, if not your fingers.</p> <p>LG&#39;s redesigned its UI too, opting for less eye-searing colours and a more muted, subtle look.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="The G3 in the background appears smaller, because it is further away" alt="Which smartphone? Pick it up, though, and its weight (or lack of it) can&#39;t fool your fingers. So it&#39;s no M8, but that doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s not handsome in its own way.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10 </strong><br />The G3 stands out from the crowd, with a 2560 x 1600 2K screen. That&#39;s an insane 538 ppi, though you won&#39;t notice any difference in sharpness in normal use. Look closely enough however, and it does throw up more details than its rivals. Its colours are excellent too - even more realistic than those on the M8 - although brightness, black levels and contrast let it down somewhat. Overall though, it&#39;s one of the best screens our eyes have had the pleasure of ogling.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The G3&#39;s 13MP camera is, put simply, fantastic. It&#39;s a jack of all trades, and nearly a master of every one. Well-lit shots are packed with crisp detail, and it even beats the light-guzzling M8 in most murky conditions. Its advanced optical image stabilisation, coupled with its laser-assisted autofocus, help keep subjects in focus - and at lightning-quick speeds, too.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />LG has thankfully gone down the same fat-trimming path as Samsung. While its UI still isn&#39;t as minimalist as the Z2&#39;s, the garish icons are gone, replaced with flat, pastel-coloured icons.</p> <p>Much of the bloatware is gone too, and LG&#39;s done its best to simplify things. The camera app for example, has had almost every little-used feature eliminated, and its bare controls now make for a much more pleasant experience.</p> <p>LG&#39;s new Smart Notice is less useful. It&#39;s essentially a Google Now clone, and we can&#39;t see any benefit it offers over Google&#39;s own well-established offering.&nbsp;Smart Clean is more useful, prompting you to clean up and delete apps to save memory.</p> <p>Finally, LG&#39;s excellent Knock Code feature negates the need for any fancy fingerprint scanners. Sorry, Samsung. It lets you tap out a pattern on the G3&#39;s screen (even when it&#39;s off),and with over 80,000 combinations, and a higher reliability than fingerprint scanning, LG&#39;s hit on a winner.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/7-best-apps-and-games-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">7 of the best apps and games for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ultimate-setup-lg-g3/feature" target="_blank">Ultimate setup: LG G3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="All the colours of the (LG) rainbow" alt="Which smartphone? But that doesn&#39;t matter.</p> <p>Instead, it brings a complete package. For one thing, it has an excellent screen that, despite being larger than its rivals, doesn&#39;t increase the size of the G3 itself, thanks to LG&#39;s bezel-trimming magic.</p> <p>Its camera is superb and adaptable, and its build, although not metal, both looks and feels good. A removable battery and microSD storage are the cherries on top of an already very tasty cake.</p> <p>The S5 points to a flashy future, the Z2 a controlled one, and the One M8 continues to push design boundaries. But it&rsquo;s the way LG has packaged everything so carefully that makes this the nicest phone to live with.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">These are the 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="LG does it again" alt="Which smartphone? Its screen is 5.5in, which would nudge it squarely into phablet territory in many people&rsquo;s books.</p> <p>But don&rsquo;t fret, you poor small-handed folk, because LG has kept you in its thoughts. The company has just announced the LG G3 Beat, a (slightly) more compact edition of the G3 &ndash; and there are a few nips and tucks that trim the price too.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Smaller, but not small </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The G3 Beat has a 5in 1280 x 720 screen (a big change from the G3&rsquo;s 5.5in 2560 x 1440 display), 1GB of RAM, 8GB of expandable storage, 4G LTE, an 8MP camera and a 1.2GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor. While the G3 represents the pinnacle of the high-end, the Beat is very much a mid-market model.</p> <p>One thing it does retain from its upper crust sibling is the camera&rsquo;s laser auto focus, which means it should latch onto a subject faster than 99 percent of smartphones out there. If it works as well as it does on the G3, it&rsquo;s a lovely feature to have.</p> <p>The G3 Beat will launch tomorrow, 18th July, in South Korea, and will arrive in Europe in the next few weeks. Except (and this seems silly to us) it&rsquo;ll be called the LG G3 s outside of Korea. Yes, with a lower-case &ldquo;s&rdquo;. UK pricing will be confirmed closer to launch, but expect it to be significantly cheaper than the full-fat G3.</p> <p>[<a href="http://www.lgnewsroom.com/newsroom/contents/64582" target="_blank">LG Newsroom</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/17/lg-g3-beat/" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> LG G3 Beat – the (slightly) smaller G3 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> G3 LG Smartphones Thu, 17 Jul 2014 10:08:20 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1442366 at http://www.stuff.tv
