Leica's picked a bad day for a big launch but 09/09/09 was just the perfect date to launch the new Leica M9 and its new compact camera the Leica X1.

Details of both new cameras have popped up on line. The Leica M9, a successor to the Leica M8 rangefinder, has a full frame sensor. That's a big deal because it means it will be able to make full use of Leica's range of lenses.

The Leica M9 will also pack more megapixels – a whopping 18MP in fact. The design remains consistent with Leica's classic look but instead of throwing out its own software, Leica will bundle Adobe Lightroom with the new camera.

The Leica X1 is likely to be a more affordable option but we don't have the pricing yet. It'll have a CMOS sensor of similar size to most DSLR cameras and will be packing a high quality Leica lens.

If you're more bothered about Leica's lovely cameras rather than all that Apple argy bargy, fear not, we'll have full details on the Lecia M9 and Leica X1 later today.

In the mean time, see what we thought of the Leica M8, the M9's venerable and similarly pricey predecessor.
