Skepticism abounded regarding the newcomer&rsquo;s chances, not least because it decided to think different and initially snub famous industry giant Windows, in favour of a partnership with beatnik rival Macintosh.</p> <p>Although something of an outsider, iPod&rsquo;s approachability started to win over many fans, thereby beginning a long association with usability, class and a certain amount of cool. A surprise u-turn regarding Windows then thrust iPod further into the limelight and catapulted it into the mainstream. Cries of iPod &lsquo;selling out&rsquo; weren&rsquo;t enough to curb a rapid ascent to global superstardom.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/how-get-u2-s-songs-innocence-your-iphone-ipad-mac-and-pc/news">How to remove U2&#39;s Songs Of Innocence from your iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>iPod&rsquo;s middle years proved to be a combination of extreme success, dominating an entire industry, and the kind of excess that vividly showcased burgeoning issues with identity. A tendency towards frequent image changes became clear, including a brief dalliance with retro-style glowing buttons in 2003, and a curious obsession with U2. The latter would eventually see iPod paint itself red and black, and then allow Bono and other members of the band to literally engrave their signatures into iPod&rsquo;s skin. It was a low point in iPod&rsquo;s life, but fortunately rumours of affairs with Linux were never proven, despite claims of photographic evidence from unscrupulous tech journalists.</p> <p>A much-needed spell in rehab saw iPod emerge in a smarter, fitter form. By 2005, iPod&rsquo;s frame was thinner, but its capacity to provide music to anyone who wanted it continued unabated, and the now-established player also began making inroads into the video industry. However, there was a sense over the next few years that iPod was starting to be outshone by its own children. As happens with many ageing superstars, iPod cleverly changed its name - to iPod Classic - and settled in to a long semi-retirement, appealing to ageing fans who&rsquo;d been along for the entire ride, and utterly eschewing what iPod referred to as &ldquo;those new-fangled apps and games kids are all snorting these days&rdquo;.</p> <p>For the next few years, iPod Classic became little more than a background player, observing from afar an industry it had defined. Rumours of ill-health for years resulted in predictions iPod Classic would soon be gone, but it nonetheless came as a shock when it was found to have died suddenly on September 9, 2014. Apple.com immediately in tribute placed a picture of iPod in its online store (above &lsquo;Shop iPod&rsquo;, just like the commercial superstar would have wanted), to forever remind everyone about the impact and marketing clout of the hard-working pioneer.</p> <p>iPod is survived by its children: shuffle, nano and touch.</p> <p><em>&bull;&nbsp;iPod Classic, revolutionary personal music player, born October 23, 2001; died September 9, 2014</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="800" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipod-obit-1.jpg?1410921338" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipod-classic-obituary-thank-you-music/feature#comments Apple iPod and MP3 Fri, 12 Sep 2014 15:33:15 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447339 at http://www.stuff.tv With Openmix, all you need to be a DJ is a couple of smartphones http://www.stuff.tv/music/openmix-all-you-need-be-dj-couple-smartphones/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A pocket-sized mixer that’ll crossfade between any two audio sources? These or your own playlists can be stored in the cloud and music can be played back on a range of devices: Amazon&rsquo;s own Kindle Fire tablets (naturally); iOS and Android phones and tablets; and PC and Mac computers. And the timing of the service&rsquo;s launch probably isn&rsquo;t an accident, with Amazon reportedly poised to announce <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-s-smartphone-revealed-purported-leaked-render/news">its very first smartphone</a> any day now.</p> <p>The music service adds to the perks already available to Amazon Prime subscribers: free expedited shipping (two-day in the US, one-day in the UK); the Prime Instant Video movie and TV show streaming service; and 500,000 free ebooks through the Kindle Lending Library.</p> <p>The announcement is likely to increase the perception that UK customers are getting something of a raw deal compared to their US cousins, however. Prime costs &pound;79 a year in the UK but just $99 (around &pound;60) in the US, and UK users don&rsquo;t get the music service &ndash; at least not yet. We&rsquo;d be very surprised if Amazon didn&rsquo;t eventually roll it out beyond America (as it did with Instant Video), but it could well be a few months until that happens.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=8335758011">Amazon</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/25-best-things-watch-amazon-instant-video-right-now/feature">The 25 best things to watch on Amazon Prime Instant Video right now</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Prime Playlists are pre-curated for your lazy listening pleasure" alt="Prime Playlists are pre-curated for your lazy listening pleasure" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/amazon-prime-playlists.jpg?1402566658" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-prime-music-arrives-one-million-streamable-songs/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Amazon Hi-Fi & Streaming iPod and MP3 Thu, 12 Jun 2014 09:49:50 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1438959 at http://www.stuff.tv New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality http://www.stuff.tv/apple/new-lightning-connector-spec-could-mean-boost-ios-audio-quality/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> In the future, audiophile headphones could hook up to iPhones, iPods and iPads via Lightning </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality" alt="New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/lightning.jpg?1402014351" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple has introduced a new specification for its Lightning connector that would allow third-party manufacturers to use it for audio purposes &ndash; and that could mean a boost for future iPhone, iPad and iPod sound quality.</p> <p>Manufacturers participating in the MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) programme will be able to make headphones and the like that support lossless 48kHz digital audio from an iOS device.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, it remains to be seen whether third-party manufacturers will use this specification &ndash; but it could mean a jump in iPhone, iPad and iPod sound quality. OK, so many of the movies in it are either (a) tempting but cost money or (b) free but bloody awful, but delve deep enough and you&rsquo;ll unearth the occasional gem: stuff like <em>Night of the Living Dead</em> (see above), <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkYT2_GoV20">His Girl Friday</a></em>, <em><a href="http://youtu.be/6FZRjLPtPLM">Enduring Love</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEaxG7HBK5c">Shopgirl</a></em>.</p> <p>These films are often old, it&rsquo;s true, and some of them have foreign subtitles, but crucially they&rsquo;re free. So no looking that gift horse in the mouth, eh?</p> <p>Another option is <a href="http://www.crackle.com/">Crackle</a>, a service owned by Sony that offers free movies and TV shows to watch through mobile devices, computers, consoles and smart TVs. The selection is a bit more exciting than YouTube&rsquo;s, although you&rsquo;ll have to periodically sit through ads (much like watching a film on TV). At the time of writing Crackle&rsquo;s free films include <em>American Psycho</em>, <em>The Squid and the Whale</em> and <em>Requiem for a Dream</em> and its TV shows include <em>Seinfeld</em> and <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/freemoviesonline">raft of links to free online movies</a> arranged by genre. They&rsquo;re almost all pre-1970, although there are a handful of more recent shorts and documentaries. Some highlights include Kurosawa&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2012/11/watch_kurosawas_irashomoni_free_online_the_film_that_introduced_japanese_cinema_to_the_west.html"><em>Rashomon</em></a> and Tarkovsky&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAhbcy8mP4"><em>Andrei Rublev</em></a>, so it&rsquo;s fair to say it might suit cinephiles more than casual viewers. It also includes links to other free movie sites (scroll down the foot of the page).</p> <p>One other alternative? If you&rsquo;re not already a Netflix or Lovefilm Instant subscriber (and haven&rsquo;t been in the past), you can trial both services for a month for free. Plenty to watch there &ndash; although you&rsquo;ll be charged for your second month if you forget to cancel before the trial is over.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature">25 fantastic free android games</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-_f2Enn8x5s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Free Books </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The abundance of out of copyright books means you&rsquo;ll never be short of free stuff to download to your ebook reader or tablet.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/free_ebooks">nice list of free ebooks</a> with links to book iOS and Kindle-friendly versions of written works such as Dostoevsky&rsquo;s <em>Crime and Punishment</em>, Conan Doyle&rsquo;s <em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</em>, Fitzgerald&rsquo;s <em>The Great Gatsby</em>, Melville&rsquo;s <em>Moby Dick</em> and pretty much everything Shakespeare ever put his quill to. I have searched the web and the only contender to the Apple device is a Cowon (but that only has the same capacity). Do you guys have any suggestions as to a potential replacement? I use my iPod in the car and whilst travelling abroad, so I like to keep my music collection with me at all times.</em></p> <p><strong>Luke Edwards, multimedia journalist:</strong> Bradders, I feel your plight as a fellow music hoarder. But there are still a few options left – five to be precise.</p> <p>Firstly you could buy yourself a new hard drive for your iPod and, <a href="http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iPod+Classic+Hard+Drive/564/1" target="_blank">using this guide</a>, swap it out yourself. That means you could pop in a whopping 500GB drive to keep you going for a long time after the Classic is removed from the shelves.</p> <p>The second option is to take the leap into the cloud. Using the likes of Spotify or Amazon Cloud on your mobile – you could access all the music you need by streaming. With Spotify you can even download albums for use abroad and in the car (via AUX or Bluetooth connection).</p> <p>A third idea would be to use <a href="http://owncloud.org/" target="_blank">Own Cloud</a> – which lets you access all your files remotely from your mobile. Then, when abroad, get yourself a <a href="http://www.globalgig.com/" target="_blank">GlobalGig</a> Mi-Fi which gives you 1GB for £10. Adimittedly if you want to listen to all 160GB this options isn't cheap.</p> <p>But if streaming is still a no-no then there’s always the Archos 5 with its 250GB hard drive, 12 hour battery life and nice big 5in screen for video. It’ll even let you browse the web via Wi-Fi or 3G just like a big tablet.</p> <p>Of course you could just buy another 160GB iPod Classic – they <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/why-you-need-buy-ipod-classic-now/news">might be worth a few bob</a> once Apple stop making them.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Gadget Doctor – help, my iPod Classic is full!" alt="Gadget Doctor – help, my iPod Classic is full!" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipod-classic-alternatives.jpg?1373944389" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Gadget Doctor – help, my iPod Classic is full!" alt="Gadget Doctor – help, my iPod Classic is full!" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/archos-5.jpg?1373944389" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/gadget-doctor-help-my-ipod-classic-full/feature#comments Apple iPod and MP3 Tue, 09 Jul 2013 15:19:28 +0000 Luke Edwards 1424736 at http://www.stuff.tv iRiver Clix 2 video review http://www.stuff.tv/video/reviews/iriver-clix-2 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Our favourite alternative MP3 player has returned with a new slimline design and a refined spec list.
