Planets of varying colours peskily materialise after briefly signposting their arrival, and it&rsquo;s your job to dump them in portals of the same colour that occasionally show up, wobble a bit, and then implode if not quickly fed.</p> <p>Planets can be dragged, merged and torn apart, to make them the requisite size to fit a portal, but when planets of different colours collide, your limited energy reserves are depleted. These can be replenished by mopping up space dust that appears when a portal winks a planet out of existence. Initially, as you work through the tutorial, everything seems simple and sedate &mdash; almost polite. To deal with the many planets that soon litter the screen, you need a propensity for multitasking and a reasonable level of dexterity as you perform a kind of finger gymnastics &mdash; Twister for your digits.</p> <p>Infinity within a minute becomes a frantic, demented test, not least when vortexes and space storms are hurled into the mix, your only brief respite coming in the form of sporadic &lsquo;slow down&rsquo; and energy power-ups. And as with the best arcade games, Eliss Infinity is a title that gives you a pasting and only makes you all the more determined to beat it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="App of the week: Eliss Infinity" alt="App of the week: Eliss Infinity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/eliss-infinity-03_0.jpg?1404816374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PERFECT CIRCLE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For the most part, it&rsquo;s the still-unique nature of the gameplay that captivates. Even five years after its debut, the Eliss concept feels fresh and ideally suited to multitouch devices. When you&rsquo;ve three fingers holding down planets being sucked towards a vortex, two fingers tearing apart a planet elsewhere to make it fit a disintegrating portal, and other &lsquo;spare&rsquo; fingers desperately trying to mop up space dust, the idea of limiting multitouch games to virtual D-pads and buttons seems reductive and primitive.</p> <p><iframe align="right" frameborder="1" height="160" scrolling="no" src="http://gfycat.com/ifr/FamousHeavenlyIrrawaddydolphin" width="284"></iframe></p> <p>This Eliss semi-sequel also provides the original title&rsquo;s more progressive journey, in the shape of a 25-level Odyssey mode; it&rsquo;s challenging and cleverly affords each level its own personality that you must understand to conquer. There&rsquo;s a noodly &lsquo;sandbox&rsquo; mode, too, accessible after beating three Odyssey sectors; this might seem throwaway, but it&rsquo;s useful for refining your understanding of the game&rsquo;s physics. The Android release additionally benefits from a new achievement system and enhanced visual/audio feedback that&rsquo;s made its way back to iOS in the Eliss Infinity 1.1 update.</p> <p>Bold, brilliant and somehow still as fresh as the pre-Infinity Eliss was on the iPhone way back in 2009, Eliss Infinity is just about as essential a purchase as you can get for your touchscreen device. You should buy it immediately.</p> <p><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.littleeyes.eliss_infinity" target="_blank">Download Eliss Infinity for Android</a></p> <p><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/eliss-infinity/id700971134?mt=8" target="_blank">Download Eliss Infinity for iOS&nbsp;</a></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/app-week" target="_blank">great App of the Week reviews</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="App of the week: Eliss Infinity" alt="App of the week: Eliss Infinity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/eliss-infinity-03.jpg?1404816374" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>An amazing multitouch roller-coaster that makes many other tablet and smartphone games comparatively feel like they&rsquo;re from the Stone Age.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/app-week-eliss-infinity/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/android/app-week-eliss-infinity/review#comments Android Android games App of the Week Apps and Games Eliss Infinity iOS iOS games Little--Eyes Tue, 01 Jul 2014 15:24:16 +0000 Stephen Graves 1440657 at http://www.stuff.tv New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality http://www.stuff.tv/apple/new-lightning-connector-spec-could-mean-boost-ios-audio-quality/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> In the future, audiophile headphones could hook up to iPhones, iPods and iPads via Lightning </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality" alt="New Lightning connector spec could mean a boost for iOS audio quality" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/lightning.jpg?1402014351" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple has introduced a new specification for its Lightning connector that would allow third-party manufacturers to use it for audio purposes &ndash; and that could mean a boost for future iPhone, iPad and iPod sound quality.</p> <p>Manufacturers participating in the MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) programme will be able to make headphones and the like that support lossless 48kHz digital audio from an iOS device.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, it remains to be seen whether third-party manufacturers will use this specification &ndash; but it could mean a jump in iPhone, iPad and iPod sound quality. The basic control method is along the lines of <em>Papertoss</em> and <em>Flick Kick Football</em>: just swipe up and across the bottom of the screen to fire the ball back over the net.</p> <p>Beyond that you can add spin by switching direction just after contact, and the speed and length of your swing affects the power of your shot. You can also choose from two serving styles: swipe up through the ball for an almost foolproof straight hit, or double tap to tee up the ball, then let fly with all the power and spin you can muster. The latter is quite easy to fluff, so if the game is hanging by a thread it&#39;s advisable to play it safe.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A simple &quot;flick&quot; control makes it easy to get into" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0812.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Table Tennis Touch - learning the basics" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0810_0.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A career in table tennis </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On top of that solid base, Table Tennis Touch builds a game structure that elevates it way beyond those aforementioned ball flickers.</p> <p>The heart of the game is the Career mode, which is based around a series of knockout competitions. At just 9.1mm thick, it&#39;s noticeably slimmer than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-pro-2/review">Surface Pro 2</a>, which was a veritable beefcake at 13.5mm. Of course overall it&#39;s a much larger device than its predecessor, with its 12in screen resulting in a 292x201mm frame.&nbsp;Despite that increased display size, it&#39;s actually lighter than the Pro 2 - 800g to 900g - and that can only be good news when it comes to single-handed use.&nbsp;</p> <p>Compare it to the iPad Air, though, and it starts to look almost chunky. Apple&#39;s flagship tablet is a mere 7.5mm deep and measures 240x165mm around. Even more impressively, it weighs in at only 469g. Pick them both up and you won&#39;t have to ask which one has &#39;Air&#39; in its name. Offset against that is the fact that&nbsp;you do lose a fair bit of screen space with the 9.7in iPad.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to make a call on aesthetics without having used the Surface Pro 3, but from what we have seen it&#39;s a nice looking device, with thin bezels and a custom-machined magnesium body. It&#39;s also tough: at the launch, Microsoft&#39;s Panos Panay intentionally dropped it onstage from shoulder height, and it didn&#39;t show so much as a scratch. You wouldn&#39;t want to try that with an iPad Air.</p> <p>The Surface Pro 3&#39;s integrated kickstand has been massively improved, with the result that you can set it at any angle from 22 to 150 degrees and it will happily stay put. And maybe most impressively of all, though the Surface requires a fan to cool down its powerful processor, Microsoft has managed to make it so small that you won&#39;t hear it (or feel it) in use.</p> <p>The iPad Air has no such trickery: it&#39;s a tablet through and through. That said, it is the nicest looking tablet we&#39;ve used, with a gorgeous aluminium unibody and subtle curves in all the right places.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to say which we prefer without having seen the Surface Pro 3 up close, so at this stage we&#39;re going to call it a draw.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-best-free-apps-iphone-and-ipad/feature">iCheapskate - the 30 best apps for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The Surface Pro 3&#039;s Kickstand in use" alt="Which tablet? The Surface Pro 3 proudly sports a 12in display, up from the Surface Pro 2&#39;s 10.6 inches and considerably bigger than the iPad&#39;s 9.7in screen.</p> <p>It also has a relatively unusual aspect ratio - 3:2, whereas most tablets are a widescreen 16:9 or 16:10 and the iPad is a squarer 4:3. By sitting between the two extremes, Microsoft presumably hopes that the Surface Pro 3 will be as well suited to films as it is to productivity and browsing.</p> <p>Both the iPad and Surface Pro 3 have full HD displays, and there&#39;s not much between them in terms of resolution: the iPad&#39;s screen is 2048 x 1536, while the Surface Pro 3&#39;s is 2160 x 1440. However the fact that the Surface Pro 3&#39;s display is so much bigger means that it loses out to the iPad in the pixel density stakes, managing 216ppi to the iPad Air&#39;s 264.&nbsp;</p> <p>Will that matter in practice? Probably. Without having viewed the Surface Pro 3&#39;s screen up close it&#39;s hard to be certain, but the difference is big enough that it ought to be noticeable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Of course there&#39;s more to a screen than mere pixels, and here the Surface also faces a tough fight to best its rival. In our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">review of the iPad Air</a> we stated that it is &quot;still the best screen we&#39;ve ever encountered on a tablet&quot;, praising its superb viewing angles, vivid colours and excellent contrast. Again, it&#39;s hard to judge the Pro 3 against it without having used it, but at this stage we&#39;ll have to award this round to the iPad.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Apple iPad Air</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-phone-81/review">Windows Phone 8.1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The iPad Air has a 9.7in screen, to the Pro 3&#039;s 12in one" alt="Which tablet? At least not within earshot of it. It runs on a proper Intel Core processor of either i3, i5 or i7 variety, has 4GB or 8GB of RAM and storage options run from 64GB up to a whopping 512GB. All of which should mean that it flies through even demanding tasks such as running full Windows 8 software including Photoshop.</p> <p>If the Pro 3 is a heavyweight, then beside it the iPad Air looks like something of a flyweight: dual-core ARM A7 chip, just under 1GB of RAM and storage that maxes out at 128GB. For all that, it packs a mighty punch, never stuttering in our experience with it and scoring highly on the AnTuTu benchmarking tool.</p> <p>The other type of power that we&#39;re concerned in here is the kind that comes out of a battery. The iPad Air is best described as a typical all-day device - use it sensibly, for instance reducing brightness where necessary, and you&#39;ll get a decent 8 or 9 hours out of it. And that&#39;s assuming you cane it as much as we tend to; use it for the odd bit of browsing here, the occasional game there and you&#39;ll get a few days from it.</p> <p>We can&#39;t pass judgement on the Pro 3 without having tested it, but the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-pro-2/review">Pro 2</a> fared considerably better than the original model, so we have high hopes that Microsoft&#39;s claim of 9hrs&#39; use will be relatively accurate, at least on the lower-specced models.</p> <p>The differences between the devices are particularly apparent in this category: the Pro 3 is a designed to be a laptop replacement as much as a tablet, and its specs show that. So while the iPad is near flawless at doing what it does, the Pro 3 is always going to be capable of more demanding tasks, and for that reason we&#39;re going to award it this round.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Microsoft Surface Pro 3</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/macbook-air-retina-display/review">MacBook Air With Retina Display preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Pro 3 is packed with powerful innards" alt="Which tablet? Accordingly, the Surface Pro 3 has plenty of power, a built-in kickstand for desktop working, a magnetic type cover for productivity (more on that below) and plenty of connections. In short, you can use the Pro 3 as a laptop replacement, and Windows 8 will give you everything you need to do that.</p> <p>Admittedly, not everyone is smitten with Windows&#39; brave new break from the traditional desktop OS, but its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/windows-81/review">update to 8.1</a> has fixed many of the flaws that bedevilled it at launch, and if you need a device that really can do almost anything, this may well be it. Windows 8&#39;s Achilles heel remains the lack of apps on the Windows Store. Yes, that&#39;s less of a problem on full Win 8 than it is on the stripped-back RT version, but it may well still frustrate you if you&#39;re looking for the kind of mobile-optimised games and apps that fill the Apple App Store. Still, the Pro 3 will come with the full Office suite installed as standard.</p> <p>Apple also broke with the past on its latest OS, ditching the skeuomorphic design that had characterised previous iterations and giving <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/node/1426771">iOS 7</a> a flat, colourful makeover straight from the pen of Jony Ive. It also got various other much-needed updates, including a proper notifications bar and Control Centre. While we applaud the changes, the important thing about iOS is that it&#39;s still the best place to find the best apps. And though Android may be catching up, Apple still leads the way for tablet-optimised fare. Plus, you now get the whole of Apple&#39;s iWork and iLife package for free - that&#39;s iMovie, iPhoto, Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and the rest.</p> <p>So, it&#39;s another case of horses for courses here. If you want to run proper desktop software, give the Pro 3 a look. If you want to play the latest mobile games and pick from the biggest selection of innovative apps, it&#39;s the iPad.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review">iOS 8 preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1601" height="900" title="Windows 8.1" alt="Which tablet? The Type Cover is the biggie; you&#39;ll have seen it before on the previous Surfaces, but it now seals itself to the screen magnetically in order to give you a firmer working space. Coupled with the kickstand, it could finally nail the problem of using a tablet as a productivity tool. It also now has a bigger trackpad, which is never a bad thing.</p> <p>The second extra is the Pro 3&#39;s Stylus, which has also had a makeover since the last model. It&#39;s now powered by tech from N-trig rather than Wacom and slots into the Type Cover when not in use. It has a rather neat new trick, too: press the button on its top and the tablet will instantly fire up the OneNote app, even if the Pro 3 was switched off. Scribble your missive, tap the button again and your note will be synced to the cloud.&nbsp;</p> <p>Thirdly, there&#39;s a Docking Station which adds three USB3.0 and two USB2.0 ports, Ethernet and 4K output through its Mini DisplayPort.</p> <p>The iPad&#39;s hardly short of accessories itself, with third-party manufacturers maintaining a constant stream of cases, Bluetooth keyboards, styluses, speaker docks and the rest. So this round&#39;s another tie.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review">Asus Transformer Book T100 review - the other Windows tablet that&#39;s also a laptop</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Type Cover has been redesigned for the Pro 3" alt="Which tablet? The Surface Pen is another &pound;45 and the Type Cover &pound;110.</p> <p>You&#39;re going to want both of them, so the cheapest model will be about &pound;800, and the most expensive &pound;1800.</p> <p>The iPad, in contrast, starts at &pound;400 (16GB) and rises to &pound;640 (128GB) in its Wi-Fi only guise. You could comfortably buy an iPad Air and 11in MacBook Air for the price of the cheapest i7 Surface Pro 3.</p> <p>And in many ways, that&#39;s the point. Microsoft is gambling that people would rather have one do-it-all device than two do-some-of-it products, and will pay accordingly. Maybe they will. But we can&#39;t help feeling that if they&#39;d settled for a smaller profit margin on this occasion, many, many more might do so.</p> <p>Either way, the Surface Pro 3 looks like a lovely device that we can&#39;t wait to test out. So, would we recommend it over the iPad Air? Really, it depends on what you&#39;re looking for. The iPad, with its smaller form, cheaper price and supremely stocked App Store, still looks like the best bet for casual use. The Pro 3, with its full Windows 8 software, Intel power and larger screen, should be the better bet for working on the go. So, inevitably, we&#39;re going to call it a draw, at least until we&#39;ve given the Surface Pro 3 our full review treatment.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw&nbsp;</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten">These are the 10 best tablets in the world right now</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="And our winner is... neither of them. After that, it&rsquo;s just a matter of doing what you do with the iPhone &ndash; well, almost.&nbsp;</p> <p>Despite the look and feel of CarPlay matching that of the iPhone, there is one crucial difference and that&rsquo;s the number of apps available. Designing in-car systems is all about avoiding driver distraction so what you get in this case is a cut down version of the iPhone with a selection of apps. Whatever you think of Siri as a day-to-day tool, it arguably comes into it&rsquo;s own in this environment because most, if not all, in-car voice control systems are command based rather than being able to cope with natural speech as Siri does.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, in our demonstration by an Apple technician on the Ferrari stand at Geneva, Siri received route instructions to US destinations but was unable to interpret a UK-based postcode or village name using his iPhone. Maps did happily accept the same code when typed in using the touch screen, though, and provided decent route instructions back to the UK. This is an example of how Siri makes use of destination data stored in an individual iPhone to recognise locations. It&#39;s part of what makes CarPlay so smart: it provides the first ever sat-nav whose settings are transparently personalised to each individual user, using all the rich data gathered by your smartphone during day-to-day use.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it&#039;s M25 time." alt="Why Apple CarPlay and its competitors are the future of in-car tech" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CarPlay_Honda_Music-PRINT.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When in the CarPlay screen, touching a Ferrari logo takes you back into the Ferrari home screen to interact with the car&rsquo;s settings, so the two are kept quite separate. Ferrari will roll the system out in the new California T in June, but more work needs to be done to introduce CarPlay to some of its other cars, such as the 458, whose screens are in a different format.&nbsp;</p> <p>Although it&rsquo;s starting in pole position, Ferrari won&rsquo;t be the only manufacturer to take CarPlay. Volvo announced it will launch the system in the XC90 next year, Nissan will also be also introducing it to the lineup in 2015 and so will 14 other manufacturers at some stage, including Mercedes. Does CarPlay represent the future of in-car Infotainment systems? Judging by the seamless way the iPhone integrates with the Ferrari and that fact that for an existing iPhone user, the learning curve is zero, it certainly looks that way.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Volvo XC90" alt="Is Apple CarPlay the future of in-car infotainment?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/volvo.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What about Android? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple is by no means uniquely qualified to dramatically upgrade the in-car infotainment experience. Android&#39;s own &#39;Projected Mode&#39; (as leaked in a job posting from Daimler, Mercedes-Benz&#39; parent company) should be capable of aping the CarPlay experience with attached Android devices, and Google Now is already serving up contextually useful data to Android users based on what it know of their calendar, contacts and tastes. Certainly, it&#39;s already more powerful in this regard than Siri. It&#39;s going to be particularly interesting to see how the Google Now experience translates to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/8-things-you-need-know-about-android-wear/feature">Google&#39;s Android Wear smartwatches</a>.</p> <p>This leaves Google in a strong position to take CarPlay on.&nbsp;Indeed, while Ferrari has no specific plans to introduce an Android solution to its cars in the near future, one senior insider says he thinks that will follow once the CarPlay has been fully integrated into the rest of the range. It looks like the battle to provide your in-car infotainment will have little to do with proprietary systems from competing car giants; instead, it&#39;ll be very similar to the one that&#39;s already going on in our pockets.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/geneva-motor-show-2014-12-most-amazing-cars-and-concepts/feature">Geneva Motorshow 2014: the 12 most amazing cars and concepts</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> <p>[Ferrari FF interior image:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2012-ferrari-ff-official-photos-and-info-ferrari-ff-news" target="_blank">Car and Driver</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature#comments Apple Cars iOS iPhone 5 iPhone 5C iPhone 5S Smartphones Sun, 13 Apr 2014 12:13:06 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1435360 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple's transparent texting app could bring an end to lamppost headbutts http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apples-transparent-texting-app-patent-could-bring-end-unplanned-lamppost-headbutts/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pesky bollards and small children could no longer be a health hazard if Apple&#039;s patent comes to fruition </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="974" height="731" title="Apple&#039;s transparent texting app patent could bring an end to unplanned lamppost headbutts" alt="Apple&#039;s transparent texting app patent could bring an end to unplanned lamppost " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/transparent-texting.jpg?1396059502" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>An Apple patent filed in 2012 has just appeared online, and it could bring a transparent background to iOS&#39; Messaging app.</p> <p>Spotted by AppleInsider, the patent describes how an iDevice&#39;s camera can be used to provide a live feed to the background of the Messaging app, creating a &#39;transparent screen&#39; effect.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apples-transparent-texting-app-patent-could-bring-end-unplanned-lamppost-headbutts/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apples-transparent-texting-app-patent-could-bring-end-unplanned-lamppost-headbutts/news#comments Apple iOS Thu, 27 Mar 2014 13:00:07 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1434414 at http://www.stuff.tv
