Once we&#39;d adjusted the angle of the mount and attached the fisheye lens, it felt secure and helped Routeshoot record relatively stable videos. The only issues were that there&#39;s no way to protect your phone from downpours, and using it without the fisheye isn&#39;t an option when cycling due to the angle of your chest. But this wouldn&#39;t be a problem on more &#39;upright&#39; activities like skiing or motorbiking.</p> <p>The RouteShoot app itself works very smoothly: just press the record button to start and stop. Playback then devotes half of the screen to your video, and half to its map data, with your pin moving as the footage progresses. You can also upload it to the Routeshoot site from here. There are obvious downsides to using your smartphone as an action cam: storage and battery life. The former is manageable on high capacity iPhones or Android phones with microSD slots &ndash; our 3-minute, 360p video took up only 15MB. It&rsquo;s also too easy: just press the Power Boost button before a shot and you&rsquo;re pretty much guaranteed a boundary. Bowling is similarly flawed - you choose the power, pitch and direction of a ball, but there&rsquo;s no distinction made between bowling type.</p> <p>Odd decisions abound too &ndash; CPU players attempt crazy runs, blatant LBWs are turned down and in one game, J.Ruahut (there are no real player names here. Presumably that&rsquo;s Joe Root) was given out stumped despite not having moved from the crease. Still, there are plenty of game options available and it&rsquo;s a decent enough way to pass 10 minutes. So you get cheerleaders, a multitude of modern flamboyant shots such as the scoop and the helicopter and more ads than a Saturday night on ITV. Seriously, you have to skip two before the game even starts.</p> <p>Once it does begin, you get a fairly good game, with a reasonable amount of batting and bowling control, nice graphics, genuine player names and even rudimentary commentary at key moments. Unfortunately, a few key flaws cost it dearly. When batting, there seems little relationship between the shot you play and where the ball ends up - even Chris Gayle would struggle to hit some of the shots that are possible here - and when bowling the CPU runs itself out about once an over.&nbsp; And while you can earn power-ups to boost your speed and six-hitting ability, the constant demands for in-app purchases begin to grate quite quickly.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Stuff says&nbsp;✭✭✭✩✩</strong></p> <p><strong><a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/ipl-cricket-fever-lite-2013/id623162506?mt=8" target="_blank">Download&nbsp;IPL Cricket Fever 2013&nbsp;for iOS (from &pound;free)</a></strong></p> <p><strong><a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.indiagames.cricketfeverchallenge" target="_blank">Download IPL Cricket Fever 2013 for Android&nbsp;(from &pound;free)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="IPL Cricket Fever 2013" alt="The 5 best mobile cricket games in the world IPL Cricket Fever 2013" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/best-mobile-cricket-app-games-ipl-cricket-fever-2013-001.jpg?1395365368" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 3) International Cricket Captain 2012 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>ICC is the only game here that really nails the most important thing about cricket: stats. And to do all that, you&#39;ll want to immerse yourself in the numbers. Lovely, lovely numbers.&nbsp;Within the game you&rsquo;ll find all-time averages for almost every professional player alive, meaning you could happily spend hours looking at it without actually starting a game. And what happy hours they&rsquo;d be.</p> <p>Once you drag yourself away from the stats and start playing, you have the option of skipping through matches or following them via text updates, with key moments presented as TV-style highlights. And although you&rsquo;re not technically controlling the players, you can have a major impact on the on-field action by setting batting and bowler aggression levels and positioning fielders. Alright, so &pound;4.99 is on the pricey side &ndash; especially given that all of the other games here are available for free, albeit most of them in Lite form &ndash; but what price many contended hours spent geeking out over averages? Can&#39;t get your iPhone movies to play on your TV? The question of which device will play what kind of file can be toe-curlingly frustrating, but RealPlayer Cloud offers a nifty solution. Every file you upload to your personal folder is automatically transcoded into a number of different file formats, and when you want to play them on another phone, tablet, PC or Smart TV, it automatically downloads the right kind of file so it&#39;ll play without any mucking about.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While for many people RealPlayer was a plugin they remember installing in the late &#39;90s, the media player has forged on and continues to serve up video to around 25 million users, who download around 100 million of each other&#39;s videos per month. And while you may already have VLC or another multi-format player on your desktop, your uncle/nan/employer probably doesn&#39;t, so RealPlayer Cloud should make sending home movies a great deal easier. Your recipient doesn&#39;t need a RealPlayer Cloud account to watch or download videos you&#39;ve sent them, so you won&#39;t have to talk your parents through any sort of installation process, and if you&#39;re pinging videos between your own devices it&#39;s all pleasingly straightforward.</p> <p>And yes, you could upload your videos to YouTube and mark them as private, but RealPlayer Cloud lets you email someone a download link rather than a link to watch on a website, and for many that will feel like a more secure, private way of getting their home movies from their phone to their TV. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>&quot;We&#39;ve found that while increasingly TVs are sold as &#39;smart TVs&#39;, people aren&#39;t really using them as &#39;smart TVs&#39;, because it&#39;s difficult to connect things up and watch things from your other devices&quot;, said RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser when we met him at Mobile World Congress last week. &quot; So our aim is make that easier. We&#39;ve started with Roku and Chromecast&quot; - there&#39;s a Cast button built into the app - &quot;and we&#39;re going to add more devices. People tell us they much prefer using an app as a remote control.&quot;&nbsp;</p> <p>The amount of space you get in RealPlayer Cloud is similar to the Dropbox model, with 2GB available straight away for free, more if you persuade a pal to sign up, and still more if you&#39;re prepared to pay. Don&#39;t imagine you can use it for any nefarious sharing, though. &quot; We support the same rules and use the same deterrents as YouTube does to stop piracy,&quot; said Glaser. &quot; Our goal is to make legitimate sharing of video easy, not piracy.&quot;</p> <p>RealPlayer Cloud is available for PC, Android, iOS, Windows 8 and Kindle Fire.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Play nice, you two" alt="RealPlayer Cloud" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/rpcloud2.jpg?1394625163" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/realplayer-cloud-transcodes-your-videos-so-theyll-play-anything/news#comments Android apps Apps and Games Camcorders iOS apps Wed, 05 Mar 2014 14:55:24 +0000 Will Dunn 1433062 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple CarPlay puts your iPhone on your car dashboard http://www.stuff.tv/apple-carplay-puts-your-iphone-your-car-dashboard/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New iOS 7 in-car interface turns your jalopy into a massive iPhone dock </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple CarPlay" alt="Apple CarPlay" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-carplay-01.jpg?1394536016" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple is taking to the road with its CarPlay interface for iOS.</p> <p>The new service, a rebranded version of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apples-ios-7-hits-road-siri-driving-seat/news" target="_blank">iOS in the Car</a>, extends the iOS 7 interface into your vehicle &ndash;&nbsp;enabling drivers to use Maps, make calls and access messages and music from the dashboard display.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Naturally, Apple&#39;s virtual digital assistant, Siri, will be available on the service for dictating messages and returning calls. Jordan, Saoirse Ronan and <em>Breaking Bad</em>&rsquo;s Jesse Plemons.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/adam-driver-play-villain-star-683821">Hollywood Reporter</a>]</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Star Wars Episode VII gets its villain" alt="Star Wars Episode VII gets its villain" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/adam-driver.jpg?1393572110" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> iOS apps Project Ara Wed, 26 Feb 2014 22:36:55 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1432944 at http://www.stuff.tv
