As you come up against walls you can obliterate, your gun must be facing the right way. Then there are lasers that only your shield can protect you from, switches that flip your Gunbrick, sticky walls, and more besides. At the end of each of the three sets of levels, you must defeat brutal bosses &mdash; easier said than done when you&rsquo;ve limited room to manoeuvre and a hail of laser fire is trying very hard to kill you.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature" target="_blank">38 Amazing Free Games for iPad and iPhone</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/lpjLH1sHQ1g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2048" height="1536" title="That&#039;s one way of beating the morning commute" alt="Gunbrick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/gunbrick-stuff-3.png?1421854628" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sharp-shooter </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For the most part, it pays to think several moves ahead, often using your weapon to shunt the Gunbrick along a single space, so it&rsquo;ll rotate correctly and be in position for subsequent moves. But for the most part, this is a generous game, wisely offering plentiful restart points and infinite lives, and dispensing with timers that would have ruined everything for all but the most die-hard mobile gamers.&nbsp;</p> <p>As it is, then, you get a vision of the future that&rsquo;s original, zany and bold, a game that&rsquo;s full of confidence, and a mash-up of genres that really works. The index sets the scene, offering chapter titles next to lazily rotating illustrative photographs. On entering a chapter, you swipe your way through pages in landscape or scroll a single vertical strip in portrait. The text is informative and engaging, friendly but not fluffy. Illustrative photography briefly rotates as you flip to a new page in landscape, begging interaction. Objects can be spun around with the flick of a finger; videos can be played and reversed at will.</p> <p>The overall effect is reminiscent of a book you might find in the world of Harry Potter, albeit running on a high-tech tablet rather than printed on magical parchment; it makes the material feel more alive. And in Molecules, this extends to the molecules themselves &mdash; tap one on the page and it zooms to fill the screen; you can then drag its component parts about, increase the temperature around it, and adjust a &lsquo;femtoseconds per second&rsquo; gauge to slow down time and scrutinise vibrations. The simulations, say Touchpress, are scientifically accurate, based on an engine developed by the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2048" height="1536" title="Get up close and personal with Yorick" alt="Molecules by Theodore Gray" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/molecules-spinning-things.png?1417919008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A sense of discovery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Even so, this in itself might seem an unnecessary gimmick, but any thoughts in that direction miss the point. As the text says, molecules are often represented as static 3D models and renderings or dead pieces of plastic, whereas in reality they are alive and in constant motion. Through showing that molecules locked into crystal structures are &ldquo;constantly vibrating&rdquo;, in illustrating how those &ldquo;floating free in liquid solutions are tumbling, spinning, twisting, turning, and writhing around&rdquo;, and in enabling you to manipulate what you see on screen with a finger, Molecules provides greater immediate insight into the subject matter than any printed volume ever can.</p> <p>So again, Touchpress has provided a modern take on a coffee-table book, on a subject likely to intrigue and delight anyone with an interest in science and the building blocks of the world. If there&rsquo;s any downside it&rsquo;s that there&rsquo;s perhaps less ambition evident than in Touchpress&rsquo;s truly masterful Journey&rsquo;s of Invention, which had a playfulness and sense of slightly experimental (but carefully considered) design that propelled it further beyond its contemporaries; but that Molecules ends up second-best to one of the publisher&rsquo;s own products doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s any less essential.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/25-free-apps-android/feature" target="_blank"> 35 best free apps for Android&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2048" height="1536" title="get beyond the pages" alt="Molecules by Theodore Gray" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/molecules-videos.png?1417919008" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another expert showing from Touchpress, seemingly effortlessly marrying a traditional text with modern touchscreen smarts</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/app-week-molecules-theodore-gray/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/app-week-molecules-theodore-gray/review#comments App of the Week iOS Molecules by Theodore Gray Touchpress Sat, 06 Dec 2014 12:13:25 +0000 Emily P Burt 1454481 at http://www.stuff.tv Tired of your iPad Air 2? What&#39;s involved? You sign up, download an app and you&#39;re in line to help test and review other apps on the App Store. Pretty simple, huh?</p> <p>Third-party developers can invite up to 1,000 people to beta test &ndash; an tenfold increase on Apple&#39;s originally-announced plan of just 100 testers.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What happens is that a developer sends out invitations, users then download the app via iTunes Connect and then download TestFlight. iOS 8 also helps notify users when the latest builds of beta apps are available, which is pretty handy compared to waiting for developer emails.</p> <p>As for updates, they&#39;re going to take a little longer due to Apple needing to vet the apps via its Beta App Review. Still, having the Big A run the rule over apps first isn&#39;t necessarily a bad thing &ndash; it reduces the likelihood of pre-release software messing up your iPhone or iPad. One of the pitfalls of Google Play is its reliance on peer review, meaning it&#39;s all too easy for malware and shady apps to sneak into the app marketplace.</p> <p>The TestFlight Beta app is <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8" target="_blank">free on the App Store</a> but it would be a good idea to get the lowdown on the program at the <a href="https://developer.apple.com/app-store/Testflight/" target="_blank">official page</a> first.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/10-great-apps-and-games-your-iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus/feature-0"><strong> 10 of the best apps for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus </strong></a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.maclife.com/article/news/apple_releases_testflight_app_beta_testing_public?utm_source=Social&amp;utm_medium=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Owned" target="_blank">Maclife</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" alt="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/testflight%2002.jpg?1414142337" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/ios-8/testflight-gets-you-new-ios-app-betas/news#comments Apple iOS iOS 8 iOS apps iPad iPhone Fri, 24 Oct 2014 09:10:20 +0000 Stephen Graves 1451254 at http://www.stuff.tv
