In about five minutes?</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>22:30</strong> A shifty look around the press area, my screen angled away from prying eyes, I Wikipedia Steve Wozniak.</p> <p dir="ltr">Obviously I know who The Woz is. I know he built the first PC - the first one to display a character on a screen - by hand, programming the operating system from scratch. I know he formed a company with his friend Steve Jobs to sell the computers he built, and that company became the most successful enterprise in the history of capitalism. Still, it helps to do a bit of homework before you interview someone, even if you only have five minutes. </p> <p dir="ltr">For example, did you know that Steve brought the first programmable universal remote to market in 1987? I probably won&rsquo;t ask him about that. &nbsp;</p> <p><strong>19:00</strong> It appears from his Twitter feed that The Woz spends most of his life on planes, where he binge-watches episodes of Big Bang Theory. I briefly consider showing him my SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive, which I use to stream video to my iPad, but then I also consider that one of the most influential figures in the history of computing might not be all that impressed by my favourite USB stick.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/hey-kids-these-are-guts-very-first-apple-mac-can-you-spot-128kb-ram/news" target="_blank">The guts of the very first Apple Mac</a></p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/mac-30-top-10-most-memorable-macs/feature" target="_blank">Apple&#39;s 10 most memorable Macs</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> &quot;I actually kind of like windows phone&quot; </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr"><strong>17:00</strong> I&rsquo;m ushered into the room to meet Steve, but he&rsquo;s talking animatedly to some people about the roads near his house. He has some ideas about how the turnings could be made safer. It will become apparent that Steve has a lot of ideas about everything. </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>15:00</strong> Steve finishes explaining how to improve roads in the Los Gatos area. Everyone else troops out, and I introduce myself. On stage at Apps World half an hour earlier, he said he&rsquo;d like to see an iPhone with a bigger screen, and that it was &ldquo;a little disappointing&rdquo; to see Apple sticking to small screens. Is the original Apple fan converting to Android?</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo; No. The Galaxy Note 3, the S4 and S3 were all very good phones. I like the way they feel in your hand and the style and the bright screen, but they&rsquo;re not the best for me. It&rsquo;s still the iPhone - I&rsquo;m in the iPhone camp, for one thing - but it&rsquo;s still the best. I love that [Android phone manufacturers] try a lot of things, it&rsquo;s called innovation, but playing with those features doesn&rsquo;t change the market much nowadays.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>13:00 </strong>Steve&rsquo;s dalliance with other smartphones doesn&rsquo;t stop at Android: &ldquo; Some people love to disdain it, but I actually kind of like Windows Phone 8, appearance-wise. What it&rsquo;s missing is good voice control, though - I found the commands that you could speak into a Windows phone very limited, and you had to speak them very precisely and in a certain way. It didn&rsquo;t let me just speak my text messages in, or ask questions like &lsquo;what&rsquo;s the tallest building in the UK?&rsquo; If you were a brilliant person on sharks, I&rsquo;d say &ldquo;how much do sharks sleep?&rdquo; and I&rsquo;d get an answer. I want a machine that can do that near me, all the time.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">I&rsquo;d never considered how important it is that shark information be universally accessible, but I see Steve&rsquo;s point. </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>12:00</strong> I notice that Steve is wearing a watch on each wrist - a very cool nixie tube watch, which looks like something out of <em>Bioshock</em>, and what appears to be a normal watch on the other. No prototype iWatch, though. Has he seen a smartwatch that impresses him yet?</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo;I&rsquo;d have to see them really close up to tell you what I think of them. I like to carry things around - with a smartphone, I like to buy it myself, test it, make it my main number, and use it for a couple of weeks before I&rsquo;m willing to go out and say &ldquo;here&rsquo;s what I like, here&rsquo;s what I don&rsquo;t.&rdquo; I haven&rsquo;t done that with a smartwatch yet. I do have a Martian Watch - it doesn&rsquo;t have a flat panel display like all the others, it has a little tiny strip where you can see if you have a text message or who&rsquo;s calling you. And it has normal hands and dials, but what&rsquo;s great is, I press a button, and I can speak any Siri command to it. I can also take phone calls by pressing the same button, and it has a good speaker. So I actually like my Martian Watch.&rdquo; </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>10:00</strong> Is that the kind of smartwatch he&rsquo;d make, if he was designing one?</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo;Well, for the last couple of years I&rsquo;ve thought about designing something pretty similar to all the other smart watches - about the same size, with abilities to connect to your phone with Bluetooth, just making the phone less visible, more wearable.</p> <p dir="ltr">But recently I&rsquo;ve been thinking about something different. When the first smartwatches came out, I thought that little tiny display works for an iPod, just about, but I want a bigger screen, like I have on my iPhone. And for at least five years we&rsquo;ve seen foldable displays being developed, with organic LEDs printed on a foldable piece of plastic. They&rsquo;re finally coming to fruition, these displays that you can bend and they don&rsquo;t break, so I&rsquo;m thinking that could wrap around your wrist and give you a better size.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">The screen size issue may well explain why it&rsquo;s taking Apple such a long time to announce it&rsquo;s rumoured wristputer, but Steve&rsquo;s idea doesn&rsquo;t stop at a larger display. &ldquo; What if it&rsquo;s on the inside of your wrist, and when you flick your wrist, it flips open into your hand? And then when you flick your hand down it flips back onto your wrist, and grabs it a little. You have to have the right materials, it takes a lot of different types of engineers to design something like that, and it takes a lot of time to do it right... but it would shock the world.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">You&rsquo;ve got to get De Niro for the advert, I tell him. He could flip it open and say: &ldquo;you talkin&rsquo; to me?&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">Steve looks at me for a moment, unsure exactly what to do with this suggestion, then laughs. Sadly, though, this flippy, snatchy wrist-clam isn&rsquo;t something he actually plans to make.</p> <p dir="ltr">&quot;I don&rsquo;t really have a business position or a company, so all I can do is speak and try to inspire people to think &lsquo;maybe that&rsquo;s a good idea&rsquo;, or maybe it would inspire somebody else to think weirdly and differently so that they come up with something better. I mean maybe it&rsquo;s on the front of your wrist, and you there&rsquo;s a sliding motion, or you just pull it, and it slides out. That&rsquo;s another idea.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple iWatch preview</a></p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartwatch/sony-smartwatch-2/review" target="_blank">Sony Smartwatch 2 review</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="578" height="636" title="The Woz with a hand-built Apple 1" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/medium_apple1board_0.jpg?1391093715" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> &quot; Those were the most fun, creative days of my life&quot; </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr"><strong>07:00</strong> Since he left Apple in the late 80s, The Woz has been an active supporter of technology in schools. Is it true he has a Raspberry Pi?</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo;Yes - for me personally, I want to use it as a learning tool. I&rsquo;ve never had time to teach myself Python, so that&rsquo;s what I want to use it for. And I want to be like the other people who encounter Raspberry Pi, that are young and getting into computers, cause I believe in them. Those were the most fun, creative days of my life, and they really brought me up to where I got to in life.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>06:00</strong> He&rsquo;s also made a number of developments towards the developing Internet of Things&hellip;</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo;People are trying to figure that out, only because we&rsquo;re able to put computers, for almost no cost at all, into every device we build. Add a computer, add a little display, let humans interact with it in more natural forms. What hasn&rsquo;t been figured out is how will they communicate with each other.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">And yes, Steve has an idea.</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo; At Apple we developed a language called Applescript, and what it does is, it allows applications to interrogate each other:what is your dictionary? What are the words you understand, what are the objects and commands you understand? This allows programmes to communicate without being taught how to talk to each each other. And that&rsquo;s what gave me the idea - if devices could do this, too, then they could learn things from each other. So one could learn what temperature it is - it doesn&rsquo;t have a thermometer, but it knows the command to ask about the temperature. If you had a lot of low-cost sensors that could do this, I think they could visually piece together the entire framework of the inside of a building, and you&rsquo;d had an almost zero-cost, intelligent camera thing making a 3D picture, not made up of satellite pictures of the world, but of the inside of every building we have. That&rsquo;s one idea, it&rsquo;s one small category of idea.&rdquo;</p> <p dir="ltr">It sounds like a pretty big idea to me.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>03:00</strong> It&rsquo;s becoming increasingly apparent why the young Steve Jobs was so keen to form a company with The Woz: he is a torrent of ideas about how to solve technical problems, a patent-filer&rsquo;s goldmine. How about the other emerging technologies, like 3D printing?</p> <p dir="ltr">&ldquo; At first I thought, &lsquo;who the heck wants to learn to draw 3D?&rsquo; I taught 3D drawing to kids, in classes that I taught, and it&rsquo;s difficult. People aren&rsquo;t going to learn to draw a saucer or a cup and fuss around with the technology to print it out - you don&rsquo;t have to print things if you can buy them.</p> <p dir="ltr">But then I thought 3D printers would be neat to make things like spare parts, but not at home. If they&rsquo;re in copy shops, where a lot of people will go in and pay a little money to use the copy machine for a while, they&rsquo;ll be able to use the 3D printers to print a spare part. That made sense to me.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>01:00</strong> A PR man has been signalling energetically through the glass wall over Steve&rsquo;s shoulder for the past few minutes, and he can&rsquo;t wait any longer. Then there was a was one about Oscar Wilde making a Madonna-esque tour of mining camps in the American West, which sounded interesting but again, probably not my cup of tea. When I started on Fashion Beast I was still working on Watchmen, and a lot of the politics, the apocalyptic darkness, the environmental stuff and the sexual politics of my later work are in there. There’s even some bits where the central character’s talking about the shamanic power of clothing, which seemed to prefigure my later obsession with magic.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> IF IT WAS MADE INTO A FILM… WOULD THIS BE THE FIRST GOOD FILM OF AN ALAN MOORE BOOK? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>My personal feelings are that despite the fact that it was originally intended as a film, its most perfect expression is as a comic book. If it had been made as a film, it wouldn’t have emerged anything like that. It would have been rewritten a couple of times at the insistence of studio executives who have to appear to be doing something, there would have been changes made, for better or worse, by the director, by the actors, by whoever. However, since it was originally written as a film, rather than written as a comic and turned into a film for purely commercial reasons, I’d be open to experiment with it.</p> <p>My objection to the filming of all my other comics has been on the grounds that these things were designed for comics, they were written specifically to show off the things that comics can do that no other medium can do, so making them into films... it’s not going to be the same work, so there’s no point in it. Other than to make money. But this one’s different. I could see this conceivably making a decent film. It would need to be made by the right people, and given the number of people that I’ve had bellowing tantrums with, that is a pretty brief list.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> WE HEAR YOU’RE NOT THAT KEEN ON TECHNOLOGY... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I don’t have an internet connection, or a mobile phone, or a TV signal. My personal view is that we are on an escalating curve of complexity. I think this is the major issue that underpins everything in the contemporary world. Everything is becoming more and more complex, at an exponential rate. Human information is doubling around every twelve months, and counting. If the graph holds up, there comes a point where human information is doubling every split second. Imagine: every split second, there will be more information created than has existed in the previous history of the world. I don’t know what human culture is like on the other side of that. I don’t know if it’s even still there, but it’s different, whatever it is. And I suspect that it will be a mixture of a utopia and a dystopia, an apocalypse and a genesis. It will be the usual glorious human mess.&nbsp;</p> <p><em><a href="http://www.avatarpress.com/2013/08/alan-moores-fashion-beast-is-finally-here/">Fashion Beast</a> is out now.&nbsp;</em></p> </div> In those days games weren't very expensive to make: for a couple of hundred thousand dollars you could make a very interesting game with just a couple of people. There wasn't this big spread we see today between heavy content like <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/review">Skyrim</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/assassins-creed-iii/review">Assassin's Creed</a> on one side, and the indie titles like <a href="http://the-witness.net/news/">The Witness</a> on the other side. One of them was the question of what new interfaces we could put on the controller, and for that we had a long research project where we looked at pretty much any idea we could think of. Would it help to measure the galvanic response of the skin? We tried out a tremendous number of things, and then we went to the game teams to ask them what they thought they could use from the controller and they felt, for example, that the touchpad was something they could use. And hence it's on the controller.</p> <p>“The other thing we did was we focussed very specifically on first-person shooters. Historically we’ve heard many times that our controllers haven’t been ideal for FPSes, so we wanted to make sure we had something that would be much better for that genre. So we worked broadly across the industry with the best of the best in that genre.</p> <p>"We made prototypes, we sent them off; we looked at the throw of the trigger, the position of the trigger, how much pressure it takes for that; we looked at the joysticks, the dead spot, we looked at convexity and concavity. It opens up a whole host of challenges: there’s price point, there’s risk of failure – you could make people go blind, so there’ll need to be some kind of FDA approval, and that could take 15 years. So you quickly get into a state where it’s more challenging, but it will happen.</p> <p>"And things tend to go faster than we think in terms of the technology. What is more difficult is this whole question of adoption and whether we’re ready for it. Do we really want to be that person who is wearing this all the time? And it’s not just in the name and the Jaguar heritage – it’s in the very way it’s conceived: a couple of pencilled lines arcing across a sheet of paper. We’ll leave the last word to Ian Callum:</p> <p>“There are two lines on this car that are very important. One starts off from an aerodynamic blade on the front splitter, sweeps up through the headlight, on through the front wing and door and then disappears. When a line on the car vanishes into the sheet metal like that, I like to describe that as the pencil coming off the paper. Part of the beauty of any line is that it has to contain the spontaneity of the original sketch. Of course, we go through any number of iterations on computers, but we always still start with an intuitive, sketched line.”</p> <p>The Jaguar F-Type is available from £58,520.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Jaguar F-Type sketch" alt="Jaguar F-Type sketch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/jaguar-f-type-sketch-1.jpg?1372868561" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Jaguar F-Type Ian Callum" alt="Jaguar F-Type Ian Callum" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ian-callum-f-type.jpg?1372868561" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Let the cat out of the bag </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> How Jaguar reinvented the British sports car </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/f-type-how-jaguar-reinvented-british-sports-car/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/f-type-how-jaguar-reinvented-british-sports-car/feature#comments Interviews Tue, 02 Jul 2013 16:34:58 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1424603 at http://www.stuff.tv This robot can become as intelligent as a toddler – with your help http://www.stuff.tv/robot-can-become-intelligent-toddler-your-help/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Robot Adam Z1 will draw pictures, play with toys, hold conversations and even express emotions if its crowdfunding campaign succeeds </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="adam z1" alt="adam z1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/adam-z1.jpg?1372641457" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Crowdfunding has thrown a lot of interesting projects into the public’s path, but few more so than Adam Z1, a highly advanced robot currently under development at <a href="http://geni-lab.com/">GENI Lab</a> in the US.</p> <p>Adam Z1 is already an impressive combination of AI and mechanics, but makers are looking for $300,000 in funding in order to make him the “world’s smartest robot”. But what does that mean exactly? We caught up with Alex van der Peet, AI Integration Architect on the project, to find out just what will make Adam Z1 special.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> human-like intelligence </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Things are perhaps even more impressive on the software front. “He will be the first robot to be fully integrated with OpenCog, one of the few active software platforms in the world that strive to achieve human-like intelligence, rather than pursuing narrow AI, such as chess computers and self-driving cars.”</p> <p>These two aspects alone, says Van der Peet, make Adam unique among robotic projects today. But there’s more: he’ll be the first robot that integrates deep learning-based visual perception with symbolic logic reasoning. That means, says Van der Peet, that he’ll be able to play with toys in much the same way as a toddler. “If you ask him, ‘Build me something I haven’t seen before’, he would remember what he’d seen you see, and then build you something different.”</p> <p>That might sound like a simple task, but it combines visual perception, movement, theory of mind, social interaction and planning. It’s not something any other robot around could pull off – in fact, it shows that Adam would have a similar level of intelligence to a three-year-old child.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/zlLqHvq2P_Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A milestone for robotics – and humanity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Van der Peet says that, while a self-driving car might seem like a highly intelligent robot, it’s actually much less intelligent than a toddler. “Children, even at the age of three, already have the capability to understand the world much more completely than a self-driving car. They can build structures with blocks as if they have a fair understanding of structural engineering, have some ability to interact socially with other children and adults, and are able to express their needs and dislikes.”</p> <p>Once the project is completed, Van der Peet believes Adam Z1 will have all those capabilities (albeit with slightly better communication skills and slightly poorer motor skills than a human child): “He’ll be able to recognise people, have conversations with them about his activities and express his thoughts and dreams in natural language.”</p> <p>If the project receives the required funding (there is 34 days left at the time of writing), Van der Peet believes Adam Z1 will form the basis for a larger, more agile and more intelligent “adult” robot – and that could be an important milestone in history, not just for robotics but for humanity as a whole: “Having an adult system, capable of understanding who we are as humans, but with an intelligence greater than that of the smartest human minds on earth, would allow it to investigate and solve so many of the problems humanity will face over the next decade. From medicine to product design to philosophy, all these concepts will eventually be reasoned about by artificially intelligent systems, carrying humanity into the next level of its development.”</p> <p>You can read more about the Adam Z1 project, and back it if you wish, at its <a href="http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-make-me-the-world-s-smartest-robot?browse_v=new">Indiegogo page</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="adam z1 2" alt="adam z1 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/adam-z1-2.jpg?1372641457" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/robot-can-become-intelligent-toddler-your-help/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/robot-can-become-intelligent-toddler-your-help/feature#comments Interviews Fri, 28 Jun 2013 18:40:38 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1424535 at http://www.stuff.tv Tour de France contender Mark Cavendish talks bike tech http://www.stuff.tv/tour-de-france-contender-mark-cavendish-talks-bike-tech/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Manx Missile, aiming to secure the yellow jersey for the first time today, tells Stuff about his bike and the gadgets he uses between races </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Mark Cavendish" alt="Mark Cavendish" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/mark-cavendish-finish-line.jpg?1372641289" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>As he prepares to go for a win in the Tour de France’s opening stage, we catch up with the fastest man on two wheels to talk gadgets and bike tech</p> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Gears </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>“My gears change electronically, but the most important thing for me is that you can have two different places to change gear.
