Blocks say that a display module, clasp and four peripheral modules will fit nicely around a small-sized wrist, while those with bigger wrists will be able to slot in an extra fifth Block.

As well as making the prototypes smaller, the team has a lot of work to do on the connections.

"The most important thing we are going to do in the next few months is refine the connector design between the Blocks," says Al Fakir. "We have an adviser who is ex Sony, specifically on audio components. At the moment we are using 3.5mm jacks, he told us we’re not going to be able to use jacks and we’re going to have to design something completely new.

"The reason we made [the rectangular display] wider is to fit the Edison inside. The Edison doesn't fit in the smaller display and that's the one a lot of women have told us they like and would buy. The other is a bit masculine and large. They say that by the end of 2015, beginning of 2016 they'll have a smaller version. That's outside our timeframe but maybe they can fast-track something for us."

If you can’t wait until the Kickstarter campaign in April 2015, check out our top ten wearables you can buy right now. He points out that when the battery runs out after a couple of days, unlike most smartwatches we've seen so far, the MICA will still look like a piece of jewellery, not a blank screen.

In fact, Intel took a completely hands-off approach to designing the smart bracelet. The first prototype looked "about as good as you'd expect a group of engineers to build".

"We took the concept to Opening Ceremony and said we have a connected bracelet so your customers can leave their phone at home and still maintain connectivity with the world around them. They looked at it and were very polite with us. But they said – Let's start from scratch."

The bracelet isn't a certain thickness because Intel had to squeeze components such as the battery into the small, curved form factor - the thickness, radius and design language was all decided by the fashion brand.

Bell says Intel is open to providing "the guts" of the MICA to other fashion partners with a "serious interest" who want to build something similar but it won't be open source to makers like the <a Krzanich hints at new Intel chips next year, a "very simple one" at the beginning of 2015 and a "more advanced one in the second half of the year" which will only activate the digital components and computing power when low power sensors are triggered.

"You can have an analogue part that's always listening and always sensing, that's very low power. Then if it sees something, whatever your sensor is monitoring, then this turns the digital side on. We have certain products coming out next year that really take this idea of putting the chip to sleep. And that impacts battery life quite a bit. A lot of battery is spent either sitting there waiting, in an idle state, or constantly pinging to see if you're doing anything. And we think we can go the other way around."

READ MORE: Blocks modular smartwatch lets you build wristwear for every occasion

There's no word yet on how long such a wearable device could last but Krzanich says that smartwatches that don't last one working day are a problem and points to the Basis Peak which lasts a couple of days on one charge.

Intel also has plans for the Basis fitness and sleep tracker now that it owns the company. It's good news for fashion companies looking to get into wearables as Intel is effectively killing the line in favour of opening up the tech to its partners. "We don't think of the company and the brand as a product we need to build on," he says. "We really think of it as a platform. So if Fossil wants to build a watch that has sleep tracking, step counting and heart monitoring we will just simply say – here it is. One is that for a lot of these wearables, you have to change your behaviour. It's actually work to use them. Like using a chest strap for getting your heart rate – it's uncomfortable, you have to pair it with your phone, you need to charge it or replace the battery, and it's actually a hassle to own, even if the information you get from it is valuable. That’s why we built the smart earbuds – they give you the heart rate information that's valuable for your training, without adding any additional burden to what you do. So I think that's a key step - you want more functionality without more friction.”

“Battery life is another issue. Obviously at Intel we create chips that are very frugal when it comes to power, but there are other ways to approach it, and the one we looked at is making charging really easy to do. That's why we proposed the smart charging bowl: when I get home, I don't want to have to plug in my smartphone and smartwatch and smart glasses and smart earphones. So the bowl takes advantage of a behaviour I already have - I can just empty my pockets into the bowl and go on with my evening, and then if they're all charged in the morning, I'll be more likely to use them the next day.”

Image #1:

<img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="849" title="This isn't Steven Holmes. But I have been using a lot of them, and there's definitely some real sparks of insight in them. To me it's like the early days of smartphones. If you remember the early Palm Trio and the first BlackBerrys, they were like tiny little PCs with a shrunken keyboards and tiny little screens, and there were some people who had to have them, but otherwise 98% of the population didn't see why they needed one. It took a while to change the user interface, going from an older paradigm to one that was more appropriate to the form factor, improving the functionality, the capability and the pleasure of using the device. It took a few years, but then everybody had a smartphone. So I think wearables are at that early stage, where people are trying a bunch of things, but I don't think anybody's cracked the code yet.”

Image #1:

Make full width:

Do not make full width

</fieldset> </fieldset>
read more
http://www.stuff.tv/intel/wearables-week-intel-s-new-devices-group-gadgets-future-are-being-designed/feature#comments Intel Wearable tech Thu, 03 Apr 2014 14:35:15 +0000 Will Dunn 1434789 at http://www.stuff.tv
