The new Honor 8 is a stylish glass beauty

Double-glass design a great alternative to those sick of metal

Looks aren't everything, so the saying goes - but when it comes to smartphones they sure do help.

Huawei clearly knows this, because it's kitted out the new Honor 8 with a gorgeous glass exterior.

Encased in a 2.5D double glass body, there's a sleek shimmer and polish to it that'll certainly turn a few heads. It's only 7.45mm thick and weighs just 153g - definitely putting it in the svelte category.

Solid specs in an attractive package

But there's more to it than just a pretty face (or should that be "fascia"?). The phone comes powered with a Kirin 950 octa-core processor running at 2.3GHz, with 3GB or 4GB of LP-DDR4 memory options and you'll get to pick between 32GB and 64GB of storage. Huawei has put dual 12MP Leica-branded cameras on the phone's back, with an 8MP front-facer taking care of selfie duties.

There's dual-SIM and microSD support with one of the SIM slots acting as the microSD port. You also get a nice 1080p 5.2in screen and a fingerprint sensor on the back.

The Honor 8 has a sizeable 3150mAh cell and runs Android 6.0 with Huawei's own EMUI 4.1 skin on top. There'll be a USB Type-C port for charging and the phone supports FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, TD-LTE and WDCMA bands, which makes it a traveller's dream.

The Honor 8 will go on sale in China from 10.08am on 19 July, in five colour options - Pearl White, Sunrise Gold, Midnight Black, Sakura Pink, and Sapphire Blue. Note that some colours won't be available for some variants.

Pricing is RMB1999 (about $300) for the 3GB/32GB variant and RMB2299 (about $340) for the 4GB/32GB version, while the 4GB/64GB version will cost RMB2499 (about $370). That's impressively affordable for what it offers. We'll keep you posted on a potential India release.
