We think they are a delight to hold and use.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, if you&rsquo;re used to a smaller phone you may well get on with the iPhone 6 better. It&rsquo;s 2.5mm thinner, a whopping 12.2mm shorter and 3.6mm less wide than the One M8.&nbsp;</p> <p>While their screen sizes aren&rsquo;t worlds apart - 4.7in to 5in - the iPhone 6 is a significantly smaller phone. Why? Part of it is because the HTC One M8 doesn&rsquo;t really try to be all that thin, and part is because of the lovely stereo front-facing speakers you get on HTC&rsquo;s phone. They significantly increase the phone&rsquo;s footprint.&nbsp;</p> <p>These BoomSound twins provide much beefier sound than most phone speakers including &ndash; we expect &ndash; the iPhone 6. There&rsquo;s more to sound than just volume, and it&rsquo;s these extra bits: tone, a bit of bass and power, that the BoomSound brothers provide.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>Draw</em></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="690" height="517" title="Bringing sexy back" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/m8-vs-iphone-6-1.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="872" height="654" title="Looks positively bulletproof" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/m8-vs-iphone6-back.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: 1080p vs Retina HD - cutting through the noise </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple jacked up the size of its iPhones this year &ndash; you can pick between the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 or the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. In a year or two Tim Cook will probably wryly refer to the 4-inch days like an old, slightly embarrassing holiday romance.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, bigger screens are better for just about everything apart from fitting in your pocket, and as we&rsquo;ve already seen, the iPhone 6 is about as slim as a 4.7-inch phone is going to get.</p> <p>Size has changed, but some other factors stay more-or-less the same as last year. The iPhone 6 still uses an IPS LCD panel, and from what we&#39;ve seen so far it still looks lovely.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 has a slightly larger 5-inch LCD screen. Its panel type is SLCD3 rather than IPS, but the technologies are so similar in their effects you could mistake them for twins. Overall, the M8&#39;s screen is a cracker, with great viewing angles, colours and (for an LCD) contrast.</p> <p>Where the two differ a bit is in resolution. While Apple calls the new iPhone 6 resolution Retina HD, this is &ndash; as the more cynical among you may have guessed &ndash; marketing nonsense.</p> <p>The iPhone 6 has a pixel density of 326ppi &ndash; the exact same density as the iPhone 5S. It does this by using a rather weird-sounding 1334 x 750 pixel resolution. You don&rsquo;t see those everyday.&nbsp;</p> <p>We soon will.&nbsp;</p> <p>HTC&rsquo;s One M8 has a much higher resolution 1080p screen that offers greater pixel density of 441ppi, despite having a significantly larger screen. To those with eagle eyes or a case of tech pedantry, this difference may be quite obvious. But you will need to get your eyes pretty close to the glass to notice it.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a difference in the glass these phone use. The HTC One M8 has good old Gorilla Glass 3 &ndash; used here, there and everywhere these days &ndash; while the iPhone 6 has &lsquo;ion-strengthened&rsquo; glass.&nbsp;</p> <p>This could in theory mean it&rsquo;s Gorilla Glass 3 with an ultra-thin layer of Sapphire on top, But you&rsquo;d need to get Tim Cook extremely drunk, or have incriminating pictures of Phil Schiller, to wring it out of them. Hopefully a teardown will tell us the truth soon.</p> <p>It&#39;s tough to make a call on this without having spent an extended period with the new iPhone, but for now we&#39;re going to say that the bigger size and higher resolution of the M8 gives it the edge.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>HTC One M8</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="850" height="637" title="What&#039;s your size?" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Untitled-1_6_1.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Luscious screen" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-lockscreen_6.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: Pixel frugal or pixel poor </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple and HTC are big believers in the idea that cameras aren&rsquo;t about megapixels.</p> <p>So while rival flagships from Samsung, Sony and LG have 12, 16 or even 20MP cameras, the iPhone 6 sticks with just an 8MP sensor - exactly the same size as that on the iPhone 5S, the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 4S.</p> <p>That&#39;s not to say that it hasn&#39;t been improved. Each individual pixel is now bigger, which should result in more detailed photos in good light, plus it should also be able to focus faster as it uses in-sensor phase detection, much like the Samsung Galaxy S5.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6 also has image stabilisation - software-based rather than the physical kind on the 6 Plus or LG G3 - which should improve low-light photography, and it&nbsp;can also now record super slow-motion video at 240fps in addition to capturing standard 1080p footage.</p> <p>The HTC One M8 is even more extreme in its pixel hatred, bringing a mere 4-megapixel sensor to the smartphone party. It likes to call its megapixels UltraPixels, but all that really means is that the sensor pixels are a bit bigger than those of most mobile phones. If a giant DSLR uses megapixels, they&rsquo;re good enough for the HTC One M8. </p> <p>It doesn&#39;t do this just on a whim, though - the idea being that a lesser number of bigger pixels will result in better low-light photography, at the expense of being able to blow your pictures up big. And it works, with the M8&#39;s low-light performance beating that of almost any other phone.</p> <p>It also has a rather unusual trick up its sleeve: it uses two sensors and two lenses to help produce photos with a 3D element and ones with blurred backgrounds &ndash; making your photos look as though they&rsquo;ve been taken with a much fancier camera and a much fancier lens.&nbsp; It doesn&rsquo;t always work, but with a bit of luck it can really pep up your portraits.&nbsp;</p> <p>So both cameras have their special skills, but ultimately, the verdict&#39;s out on this round until we&#39;ve really put the iPhone&#39;s camera through its paces.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>Draw</em></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple Watch hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Double vision" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-duo-camera_6.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-06_1.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power and storage </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The HTC One M8 is an excellent performer among Androids. It has a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 CPU with 2GB of RAM and we&#39;ve never known it to be fazed whether by high-end games, multi-tasking or full HD video.&nbsp;</p> <p>Just look at the numbers and it seems like it should cream the iPhone 6, which has a dual-core CPU. It&rsquo;s not quite that simple, though.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6&rsquo;s new Apple A8 processor is a few steps more advanced than the Snapdragon 801. First, it&rsquo;s 64-bit where the Snapdragon is fundamentally a 32-bit processor.&nbsp;</p> <p>The way it&rsquo;s made is also more advanced. Where the 801 uses a 28nm process, the iPhone 6 is a 20nm CPU. And, yes, the lower the number the better.&nbsp;</p> <p>Without wanting to dig too deep, this means the transistors that make up the processor are 20 nanometers in size in the iPhone. And smaller transistors make a processor more efficient.&nbsp;</p> <p>Comparing an iPhone with an Android is never going to be 100% fair, though, as their power is used in different ways. For now, we&#39;ll settle for saying that we expect the iPhone to at least match the M8.&nbsp;</p> <p>Of course the other type of power is that which you get from a battery, and the M8 excels here too. We generally get a full day&#39;s use from it - and trust us, we&#39;re the kind of people who really do put a phone through its paces. Plus, it has a superb battery-saving mode which can eke hours more out of a mere few percent.</p> <p>It&#39;s hard to say how the iPhone 6 will fare, but Apple itself only claims 10hrs of talk time (HTC reckons 20hrs for the M8), so we&#39;d be very suprised if it ends up topping its rival on this front.</p> <p>Finally, the M8 also has one other thing the iPhone 6 lacks: a microSD slot. No iPhone has ever offered one of these, and there are no signs that&rsquo;s going to change any time soon.</p> <p>However, you can get a 128GB iPhone 6, which will store enough cat photos and episodes of&nbsp;<em>Dawson&rsquo;s Creek</em>&nbsp;to fill a month&rsquo;s worth of miserable, lonely evenings. Of course, you&rsquo;ll probably have to sell your kidneys and most of your family to afford a 128GB iPhone 6, but that&rsquo;ll just key you into Dawson&rsquo;s angst all the more.</p> <p>Stepping back into the real world, a 128GB iPhone 6 will cost you &pound;700. That&rsquo;s a &pound;260 upgrade, while a 128GB microSD card costs about &pound;70-80.</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>HTC One (M8)</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="A8, m8" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/a8_0.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> OS: The classic battle </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>iOS or Android? It&rsquo;s a question we&rsquo;ve ben dealing with for the better part of a decade now.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 uses Android 4.4 with HTC Sense on top while the iPhone 6 has iOS 8. The big news for iOS 8 is that it massively increases support for mobile payments, now that NFC is included in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (and eventually the Apple Watch).</p> <p>What&#39;s more, if you also have a Mac running the new OS X Yosemite (still in beta right now, but due to be released next month), you&#39;ll get access to extra tricks via Yosemite&#39;s new Continuity feature, such as being able to start an email on your laptop and seamlessly finish it on your iPhone.</p> <p>Other features new to iOS 8 include the Health app, which will integrate the data from all of your fitness-tracking gadgets, the ability to run 3rd-party keyboards, improved notifications, extra gaming potential and improvements to iCloud. Frankly, there&#39;s too much new stuff to really go into it all here, so check out our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review">iOS 8 preview</a> for the full deal.&nbsp;</p> <p>The HTC One M8 runs a customised version of Android 4.4, called HTC Sense. And as the One M8 already has NFC, it has the same mobile payments potential as the iPhone 6. Android just hasn&rsquo;t got its act together in the same way as Apple.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s one key added feature in HTC Sense, and it&rsquo;s called BlinkFeed. This is a neat home screen page that gives you a stream of updates from your favourite online sources &ndash; including websites and social networks.</p> <p>Which is better? This is a very tough one to call. iOS 8 is a bit more streamlined, and iOS still offers a better selection of games, and apps for creative types. However, HTC Sense is one of our favourite custom Android interfaces and Android on the whole is still a far more open, customisable platform.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s close, but Google needs to release Android L to really pull ahead of Apple at this point.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Winner: <em>iPhone 6</em></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Very handy" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-08_0.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="BlinkFeed ftw" alt="iPhone 6 vs HTC One M8: the weigh in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/HTC_One_M8-review-blinkfeed-2_4.jpg?1410528414" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6 looks like being Apple&#39;s best iPhone yet, having had the size upgrade it so desperately needed while also gaining more power, a few new camera skills and a feature-packed new OS. Physically it&#39;s a thing of beauty, performance-wise it purrs along like a high-end sportscar and its battery is one of the best. The design is gallery-worthy, finished with rounded aluminium corners, an all-glass back and minimalist details. But your hands might not like it &ndash; both the S5, One M8 and G3 are easier to hold than this 163g block, and picking up the Z2 from a desk can be awkward.</p> <p>It has Live Colour LED tech for punchy but accurate hues, and clear-sounding stereo speakers on the front of the phone. Our only niggle? The front is seriously reflective. For a smartphone camera, the Z2 can take incredible photos with its 1/2.3in, 20.7MP sensor and speedy autofocus.&nbsp;</p> <p>It also flies in use: it shares the same 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor as the S5 and One M8, but the Sony&rsquo;s 3GB of RAM bests its rivals. Small apps in overlaid windows lag occasionally, but it&rsquo;s still a great use of that 5.2in screen, and the Android skin is mostly clutter-free.</p> <p>With a bigger screen, there&rsquo;s a bigger 3200mAh battery, and the Z2 reliably lasts the day - with Stamina mode to conserve juice when the screen&rsquo;s off.</p> <p>Overall, this is the connoisseur&rsquo;s choice, capable of taking brilliant photos and playing cinephile video. It oozes quality but isn&rsquo;t the most practical choice. But if you have the time to show Sony some love, it will return it in large dollops.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Sony Xperia Z2 - the full review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1889" height="1417" title="The Xperia Z2 makes almost no compromises" alt="Which smartphone? Although the Z2&rsquo;s a heavy smartphone, this isn&rsquo;t the problem - the HTC weighs just as much. The issue is more that the Z2&rsquo;s toughened glass build would work better scaled down. When you&rsquo;re dealing with a 5.2in diagonal span of glass, ergonomics count (we&rsquo;re hoping the Z2 Compact gets this right).</p> <p>Another smartphone best picked up and fondled before you decide, then. If its shape and minimalist design work for you, you can get back to appreciating everything the Sony does brilliantly. Such as being waterproof: with all the port flaps closed, the Z2 has the same IP55/IP58 water-resistance as the Z1. Plus, the headphone jack is now flap-free.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10</strong><br />In almost every way the Z2&rsquo;s screen is a stunner. It displays fine detail better than both the S5 and the One M8, perfect for pressing your nose up against full HD movies. Viewing angles aren&rsquo;t the best but they&rsquo;re no longer a problem either.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The Superior Auto mode doesn&rsquo;t always produce the best images &ndash; it can struggle to expose correctly in sunlight and it doesn&rsquo;t have the night vision of the HTC. But chances are, Sony owners won&rsquo;t mind digging into the comprehensive settings.</p> <p>Here it shines: faces come out well in low light, scenes look punchy and the background de-focus mode is mesmerising. Both 1080p and 4K footage are smooth thanks to SteadyShot stabilisation, though autofocus jumps around while filming and, with the Snapdragon heating up, the Z2 can abruptly stop shooting in the higher resolution.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />Sony&rsquo;s treatment of KitKat verges on bloatware, with pushy media services ruining the fun. For instance, an upward swipe to access Google Now also shows Sony&rsquo;s What&rsquo;s New app: a feature guaranteed to have zero fans.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/10-best-apps-sony-xperia-z2/feature">10 of the best apps for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/ultimate-setup-sony-xperia-z2/feature">The best cases, headphones and accessories for the Sony Xperia Z2</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="The Sony&#039;s ergonomics hold it back" alt="Which smartphone? Battery life is slightly better, bringing it on a par with its rivals &ndash; you shouldn&rsquo;t need the Ultra Power Saving Mode to last the day. But the UltraPixel camera stays.&nbsp;</p> <p>This might disappoint those looking to shoot serious images and footage, but for most, the low-light prowess and focusing tricks are good enough. The G3 surpasses the G2 in almost every way. For starters, it&#39;s got a 2K display that&#39;s almost sharp enough to cut your eyes on. Sorry if you&#39;re squeamish.</p> <p>While the G2&#39;s 13MP camera remains, LG has thrown in laser-assisted autofocus and 4K video. Pick it up, though, and its weight (or lack of it) can&#39;t fool your fingers. So it&#39;s no M8, but that doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s not handsome in its own way.</p> <p><strong>Screen: 9/10 </strong><br />The G3 stands out from the crowd, with a 2560 x 1600 2K screen. That&#39;s an insane 538 ppi, though you won&#39;t notice any difference in sharpness in normal use. Look closely enough however, and it does throw up more details than its rivals. Its colours are excellent too - even more realistic than those on the M8 - although brightness, black levels and contrast let it down somewhat. Overall though, it&#39;s one of the best screens our eyes have had the pleasure of ogling.</p> <p><strong>Camera: 10/10</strong><br />The G3&#39;s 13MP camera is, put simply, fantastic. It&#39;s a jack of all trades, and nearly a master of every one. Well-lit shots are packed with crisp detail, and it even beats the light-guzzling M8 in most murky conditions. Its advanced optical image stabilisation, coupled with its laser-assisted autofocus, help keep subjects in focus - and at lightning-quick speeds, too.</p> <p><strong>OS and apps: 9/10</strong><br />LG has thankfully gone down the same fat-trimming path as Samsung. While its UI still isn&#39;t as minimalist as the Z2&#39;s, the garish icons are gone, replaced with flat, pastel-coloured icons.</p> <p>Much of the bloatware is gone too, and LG&#39;s done its best to simplify things. The camera app for example, has had almost every little-used feature eliminated, and its bare controls now make for a much more pleasant experience.</p> <p>LG&#39;s new Smart Notice is less useful. Viewed from the front it&#39;s almost all screen, thanks to its impressively tiny bezels, and while it&#39;s not particularly distinctive, it screams class.</p> <p>As with the G2, the volume and power buttons are on the rear of the handset. It might seem odd, but you&#39;ll soon get used to it. The speaker has also been moved round to the back, and either side of the camera lens you&#39;ll find two more photographic features: a dual-tone flash and focus-aiding laser. More on them later.</p> <p>There&#39;s no all-metal build, but the shell is at least made from a premium plastic that&#39;s designed to look and feel like brushed metal. Plus, it&#39;s removable - allowing you to add extra storage space via microSD card and to swap out the battery.</p> <p>The HTC One (M8) sports an altogether more flamboyant design. In fact, it&#39;s the most beautiful Android phone we&#39;ve seen so far, with a subtly curved body that&#39;s almost entirely made from brushed aluminum. The attention to detail is immense, from the expertly drilled speaker grilles above and below the screen to the way the bevelling around the camera lenses is designed to catch the light.</p> <p>HTC has finally seen fit to add a slot for microSD storage, but unlike the G3, the back isn&#39;t removable,so you won&#39;t be able to change the battery. It&#39;s also worth bearing in mind that although the G3 has a much bigger screen - 5.5in to 5in - it&#39;s almost the same size as the M8, on account of its small bezels and the HTC&#39;s front speakers.&nbsp;Unlike rivals the Samsung Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2, neither phone is waterproof.</p> <p>While the G3 has a bigger screen in a similar size body, there&#39;s no fooling your fingers when you pick it up. The One (M8)&#39;s build quality is sublime, and for that reason, it wins this round.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: HTC One (M8)</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The HTC One (M8) is the most beautiful Android phone we&#039;ve used" alt="Which smartphone? Its 2560 x 1440 resolution is staggering for a smartphone - to put it in context, that&#39;s the same spec as the screen on the 27in iMac. And the G3 is a mere 5.5 inches in size. All of which means that it has an incredible pixel density of 538ppi, a number that puts it above all other smartphones, tablets and in fact consumer devices of any kind.</p> <p>The HTC One (M8) has to make do with a 5in, 1080p screen. Frankly, it should be ashamed of itself. In truth, its pixel density of 441ppi is hardly shabby either, but the G3 is the clear winner on specs alone.</p> <p>Hype aside though, you won&#39;t notice the G3&#39;s extra pixels in normal use. Only when we scrutinised side-by-side reference photos, did the G3&#39;s extra sharpness really stand out.</p> <p>Not only that, but we found its colours to be more accurate, and a little less over-saturated than the ones on the One (M8)&#39;s screen.</p> <p>The One (M8)&#39;s blacks and contrast are noticeably better than the G3&#39;s, but overall the G3 comes out on top, especially as it manages to squeeze in a larger display without taking up noticeably more space in your pocket.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: LG G3</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Pixel Party " alt="Which smartphone? Both have Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processors, with the G3&#39;s clocked at 2.5GHz and the M8&#39;s running at 2.3GHz. The G3 packs 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, although a version with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage might land in the UK at a future date. The M8 has 2GB of RAM in either 16GB or 32GB varieties.</p> <p>Both phones score more or less the same reults in various benchmark tests, and numbers aside, they&#39;re both slick and fast in normal use. Multitasking, 3D gaming and browsing are slick and fluid on both.&nbsp;</p> <p>We&#39;d expect things to be pretty similar on the battery front too. The LG G2 was one of the best phones around in terms of stamina, but the G3 falls al little short, eeking out around one-two hours less battery life a day.</p> <p>Still, we managed to get 15 hours out of it with five hours of screen on time in a single day, which is an impressive achievement given the much bigger, higher-resolution screen. It&#39;ll&nbsp;comfortably give you a full day of heavy use, which is an important box to tick.</p> <p>The M8&#39;s battery is smaller, at 2600mAh, but it also has a smaller screen to power. In our tests, we generally got a day&#39;s use from it, but no more. Both phones also have clever battery-saving modes which will help you eke out every last drop of juice.</p> <p>All told, there&#39;s very little between the phones on the power front, so this one&#39;s a draw.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8/feature">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs HTC One (M8)</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="392" title="What lies beneath" alt="Which smartphone? While we haven&#39;t got the stopwatch out to verify this, we can say that the G3&#39;s autofocus is very snappy indeed.</p> <p>Overall, our experience with the G3 cements it as having one of the best smartphone cameras currently available. It&#39;s a superb all-rounder, excelling and surpassing the One (M8) in almost every category from well-lit conditions, to sharpness and natural colours.</p> <p>The One (M8)&#39;s 4MP UltraPixel sensor performs well in low-light conditions, but it just doesn&#39;t serve up the same levels of detail as the G3.&nbsp;Yes, its low-light photos might be a little less noisy, but they&#39;ll also be smaller, so you won&#39;t be able to blow them up so big or crop into them.</p> <p>The M8 has a new photo feature of its own too - the new Duo camera. This is a genuinely innovative feature which enables you to refocus photos after you&#39;ve taken them. It works a little like the Lytro camera, although without quite such a dramatic effect. It&#39;s a bit of a gimmick, yeah, but a nice one to have all the same.</p> <p>The trouble for HTC is, the G3 can also create this post-shot focusing effect using Magic Focus. It takes numerous shots at different focal lengths in quick succession, before stitching them together and alowing you to change the focus post-shot. </p> <p>In the One (M8)&#39;s defence, you&#39;re able do this whenever you fancy, while you can only change the focus on the G3 after the shot is initially taken.</p> <p>Video-wise, the G3 can shoot 4K at 30fps and full HD at creamy 60fps and slo-mo 120fps. The M8 can do full HD and 120fps slo-mo, but no 4K.</p> <p>Ultimately, we&#39;ve got to give this round to the G3. Colours are no longer quite so garish and much of the bloatware has seemingly been removed. And if you&#39;re still not happy, you can mercifully uninstall nearly every pre-installed LG app, which is rather nice.</p> <p>The G3 also has the excellent KnockCode feature, which we saw on the G Pro 2. This lets you unlock the phone simply by tapping out a preset pattern, which takes you straight to the home screen.</p> <p><iframe class="vine-embed" frameborder="0" height="600" src="https://vine.co/v/Mmnzlz7dD3Q/embed/simple" width="600"></iframe></p> <p>Another weapon in the G3&#39;s OS arsenal is its Guest Mode feature, which lets you section off a safe area of the phone for when you lend it to, say, your kids. It&#39;s like a safe sandbox which is separate from all of your apps, photos and documents, avoiding situations in which important files could be deleted.</p> <p>The G3 also has a few little software touches which make using it easier. You&#39;ve got the ability to include an extra button in the on-screen navigation bar which pulls the notification bar down for you. Given the awkwardness of reaching up to the top of the G3&#39;s 5.5in screen with a single thumb, this comes in incredibly useful for one-handed use.</p> <p>You can also track your steps and calories burned in an app similar to Samsung&#39;s S Health, although it&#39;s not as in-depth as dedicated health-tracking apps like Jawbone&#39;s offering.&nbsp;</p> <p>Sense 6.0 on the One M8 is one of the few examples of Android phones where a skin is a welcome addition, because HTC&#39;s Sense 6.0 is a thing of beauty. It&#39;s slick in use, not too overbearing and comes with the fantastic BlinkFeed. As a way of aggregating all of your social media feeds and favourite news sources, it&#39;s unparalleled, and the new version also allows you to add RSS feeds of your choice. </p> <p>Like the LG G3, the One (M8) can be turned on with a tap - although the fancy Knock Code pattern unlock is absent. You can however swipe left or right to fire up a certain app or go straight to the home screen, which is a nice bonus.</p> <p>The charms of BlinkFeed will be enough to sway things HTC&#39;s way for some, while for others the G3&#39;s Guest Mode and Knock Code security unlock will be the more tempting option. Both devices have strong cases, so this one&#39;s a draw too.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw</strong></em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/exclusive-htc-shows-us-how-one-m8-could-have-looked/feature">Exclusive - HTC shows Stuff how the One (M8) could have looked</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="BlinkFeed is a big favourite at Stuff" alt="Which smartphone? It&rsquo;ll have the same 5in 1080p display and Snapdragon 801 SoC processor (clocked at 2.5Ghz in Asia).</p> <p>However, the Ace ditches the M8&rsquo;s Duo Camera for a standard 13-megapixel shooter, and the infrared TV remote function is also missing in action&mdash;concessions for what will surely be a noticeably lower price.</p> <p>Engadget reports that the device will be out next week on 3 June, though that&rsquo;s likely for China; it&rsquo;s not clear if the Ace will also debut internationally so quickly, but we&rsquo;re sure to find out pretty quickly.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.htc.com/cn/go/e8/">HTC</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/29/htc-one-vogue-edition-china/">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">Top 10 Smartphones</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GameCube controller adapter announced for Wii U </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Nintendo fans are ecstatic for this year&rsquo;s launch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, but even the most excited of the bunch had been concerned about their control options for the game. As shown in the image, it will plug into the Wii U via its front USB ports, and will allow up to four GameCube controllers to be used.</p> <p>Many details remain unclear, such as whether it will work with other games and if the beloved Wavebird wireless controller will be supported. Additionally, it&rsquo;ll feature a 5.5in WQHD (1440x2560) display with a Snapdragon 810 (4x 2.5Ghz) processor and 3GB RAM, as well as an enhanced LTE radio for swifter data speeds.</p> <p>A protruding camera on the back is also an interesting tweak&mdash;and perhaps indicative of a higher-end camera, which would be a nice boost from the 4-megapixel sensor in the standard model. And while that&rsquo;s as much info as they&rsquo;re giving up, the name itself suggests that it&rsquo;ll be a improved version of the current (M8).</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Just a Max – or something more? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Given how thoughtfully designed, well made and highly-specced the One (M8) is, it&rsquo;s hard to imagine what HTC could do to make it &ldquo;better&rdquo;. If the HTC One (M8) Prime is indeed real, the upgrade could be the screen.
