The 4.5in, HD, 326ppi screen is the real selling point over its fuzzier-screened rivals; it matches the much pricier <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-mini-2-hands/review">HTC One Mini 2</a>&nbsp;on this front. Next to most other phones in its class it looks pin-sharp, with vivid but natural colours and good contrast.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not without problems - the 5MP camera does still disappoint sometimes, especially in low light, and you only get 8GB of built-in storage. Even with more pixels to push than most cheap phones, the Moto G still lasts a day between charges.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you have specific criteria - for instance you&rsquo;re a n00b who likes the look of Windows Phone or taking pics is your priority - then other budget phones down this list might make more sense. But for most people, the Moto G 4G will do very nicely indeed.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Stuff says</strong>:&nbsp;<strong>✭✭✭✭</strong><strong>✭</strong><br />Fantastic and futureproof, this is as close to budget phone perfection as you can get in 2014</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hisense Sero 5 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Hisense Sero 5 offers a feature list that&rsquo;ll make your jaw drop when you hear the phone costs just &pound;130. 4G, a 5-inch 720p screen plus an 8-megapixel camera mean the Sero 5 offers even more gumpf than you get in the Moto G.</p> <p>Sure enough it is a real bargain, a stunner for penny-pinchers, but there are some elements that ensure it&rsquo;s not quite the very best option in the world. Build quality isn&rsquo;t up there with the best as the screen flexes a teeny bit under pressure, causing wobbles in the display. That&rsquo;s not necessarily a deal-breaker but tells you the Sero 5 doesn&rsquo;t use Gorilla Glass like the Moto G: not good news for the butter-fingered.</p> <p>The software won&rsquo;t dazzle, either. Using Android 4.3 it&rsquo;s a bit out of date and the interface isn&rsquo;t exactly pretty: it&rsquo;s workmanlike at best. With display colours a bit undersaturated, the screen does look a tiny bit glum until you get used to it too.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re just trying to manage your expectations here, though, because on paper the Hisense Sero 5 sounds like the best budget phone in the universe. It isn&rsquo;t, but it is very, very good if you don&rsquo;t want to spend a lot but do want 4G.</p> <p>Battery life and performance are solid, and with a few tweaks you can improve the interface no-end. For the more advanced Android user, the Hisense Sero 5 is fab.</p> <p>The screen is big and sharp, a Snapdragon 400 provides enough grunt for gamers and the camera isn&rsquo;t even too bad, offering similar performance to the Moto G but with slightly worse colour reproduction.</p> <p>Only the finishing touches are missing here: the Hisense Sero 5 does feel a little bit cheap and thanks to its non-Gorilla Glass front you won&rsquo;t want to treat it too carelessly. Hisense seems to admit this itself by putting a plastic screen protector on the thing direct from the factory. Other than that, though, it&rsquo;s grand.</p> <p><strong>Stuff says</strong>:&nbsp;<strong>✭✭✭✭</strong><strong>✭</strong><br />The Sero 5 is a bargain winner with just a couple of niggles keeping it behind the Moto G</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hisense Sero 5" alt="Hisense Sero 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sero-3%20copy.jpg?1422479430" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Hisense Sero 5" alt="Hisense Sero 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sero-5.jpg?1422479430" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hisense Sero 5 Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>:&nbsp;5in 1280x720 (293ppi)<br /><strong>Power</strong>:&nbsp;1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400/1GB RAM<br /><strong>Camera</strong>: 8MP 720p rear, 1.3MP 720p front&nbsp;<br /><strong>Battery</strong>:&nbsp;2500 mAh&nbsp;<br /><strong>Connectivity</strong>:&nbsp;3G/4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0<br /><strong>Storage</strong>:&nbsp;8GB (microSD expandable by up to 32GB)&nbsp;<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>:&nbsp;143 x 71.8 x 8.9mmmm / 133g&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony Xperia M2 (£150) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Xperia M2 is the best way to get a big screen from a big brand on a little budget. It&rsquo;s just a shame that 4.8in screen isn&rsquo;t very sharp at 229ppi and suffers from poor viewing angles. Because otherwise you get a ton of Sony for your money here.</p> <p>Its blocky plastic design, available in purple, white and black, is based on the high-end <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-htc-one-m8-vs-sony-xperia-z2/feature/1-sony-xperia-z2">Xperia Z2</a>. There&rsquo;s no waterproofing as you&#39;d find on that premium Xperia, but for &pound;150 PAYG, we&rsquo;re not complaining.</p> <p>Performance is much better than previous mid-range Sony phones we&rsquo;ve encountered thanks to a Snapdragon 400 processor which powers every handset on this test bar the Moto E and HTC Desire 301. Battery life is pretty good, too, matching the Moto G 4G. Plus Sony has thrown in extras you won&rsquo;t find on other budget blowers such as small apps, Stamina mode for the battery and a pulsing notification light to stretch to over a day of use.</p> <p>Its more than decent 8MP camera is the highlight, though. AF can be a little sluggish but it&rsquo;s easy to use, with Sony&rsquo;s quick Superior Auto mode plus lots of settings to dig into and reliably good 1080p video. It doesn&rsquo;t get close to the top smartphones for picture quality, but it&rsquo;s the best all-round snapper of all the cheap phones we&rsquo;ve tested.</p> <p>If Sony had stuck a higher res screen on the M2 and added support for 4G, this would be more of a rival for the Moto. The 5in Moto G (2014) isn&#39;t a direct replacement for the 4G model or last year&#39;s handset (now priced at &pound;100). It&#39;s the Moto G for people who don&#39;t mind sacrificing a bit of battery life here, a splash of 4G there for a big screen and much better camera than the original 5MP snapper.</p> <p>So what&#39;s been improved? It performs just as fast as the first Moto G and Android is just as clutter-free. The main difference is the bigger build (it&#39;s the biggest here) - it&#39;s sturdy, though, and still sits nicely in the hand. It&#39;s sacrificed the old Moto G&#39;s neat, tidy look; there&#39;s just more plastic, so that couldn&#39;t be helped without impressive - and costly - engineering. But Moto has included some very decent (for the money) stereo speakers on the front. They don&#39;t match the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">One (M8)</a> but you won&#39;t be ashamed to use them in the back garden either.&nbsp;</p> <p>Battery life, again, isn&#39;t quite as great as the Moto G 4G. Streaming video on a commute, the bigger 5in screen sucks up 22% an hour versus the 4.5in phone&#39;s less worrying 16%. Still, it lasts the day so we&#39;re not complaining too much. Speaking of the screen, it&#39;s 720p and chances are you won&#39;t notice the slightly-less-sharp picture compared to the original. Colours are slightly more natural too.&nbsp;</p> <p>The real stars are the two new cameras, both welcome improvements. Images look a lot less blurry and smudgy than before with clear, in-focus shots and accurate colours. Video too is much more usable. The new 8MP cam on the back takes a while to focus at night but if you hold steady, you can get some impressive pics for a &pound;150 phone. All round, we&#39;d still recommend the 4G Moto G &ndash;&nbsp;but if phone photography is your thing, consider the 2014 model.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Stuff says</strong>:&nbsp;<strong>✭✭✭✭</strong><strong>✭</strong><br />Moto has done it again - big screen, almost-stock Android and one of the best cameras for the money&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="It&#039;s the Moto G but not as you know it " alt="Best cheap smartphone 2014 test " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCN5121%20with%20Annotation.jpg?1422479430" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Motorola Moto G (2014) tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 5in 720x1280 (294 ppi)<br /><strong>Power</strong>: 1.2GHz quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400/1GB RAM<br /><strong>Camera</strong>: 8MP 720p rear, 2Mp front<br /><strong>Battery</strong>: 2070 mAh<br /><strong>Connectivity</strong>: 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0<br /><strong>Storage</strong>: 8/16GB (microSD up to 32GB)<br /><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 141.5 x 70.7 x 11mm/ 149g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4600" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/also-rans_0.jpg?1422479430" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> EE Kestrel (£100) </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>4G is no longer a luxury. So it&#39;s not all bad news.</p> <p>But of course, there&#39;s always the possibility Blass is wrong and that the One (M9) will follow a similar design language. We just don&#39;t know for sure now.</p> <p>That leaves us all playing waiting game until March 1st, when HTC will hold aloft its new smartphone at MWC.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-m9-hima/review">HTC One (M9) preview</a>&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>[<a href="http://htcsource.com/2015/01/htc-hima-and-the-launch-day-conundrum/">HTC Source</a> via <a href="http://www.ubergizmo.com/2015/01/htc-one-m9-leaks-have-apparently-been-clever-plants-all-along/">Ubergizmo</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/android/those-leaked-images-htc-one-m9-hima-could-be-fake/news#comments Android HTC Smartphones Mon, 26 Jan 2015 11:08:26 +0000 Max Langridge 1458528 at http://www.stuff.tv This is (probably) the HTC One (M9) http://www.stuff.tv/htc/probably-htc-one-m9/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Say hello to HTC&#039;s next shiny superphone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="805" height="604" title="This is (probably) the HTC One (M9)" alt="This is (probably) the HTC One (M9)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/htc-m9.jpg?1421939269" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>See that right there? That&#39;s HTC&#39;s new flagship for 2015. Which, given the M8&#39;s gorgeous design and premium feel - is just fine by us.</p> <p>Take a closer look at the rear of the leaked phone however, and you&#39;ll notice a different looking camera. The French site claims this will be where the new 20.7-megapixel sensor will sit, meaning that HTC will ditch its UltraPixel technology in favour of something that&#39;ll likely produce better pictures, especially for people who like cropping into images.</p> <p>While none of this has yet to be confirmed, it&#39;s highly likely this could be the case. However, these days it&rsquo;s packed with mid-range mobiles with a slightly more fun, less fashion- and spec-obsessed feel to them.</p> <p>We see the lighter approach of the Desire range throughout the Desire Eye, but it&rsquo;s most obvious in the more basic design. While HTC&rsquo;s One phones are made of aluminium, the Desire Eye embraces plastic much in the way&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia/nokia-lumia-630/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia phones do</a>.</p> <p>The smooth, soft, two-tone finish of the Desire Eye isn&rsquo;t out to make its mark the Eye out as a pocket-size status symbol, but it feels great and has a cheery disposition that&rsquo;s instantly likeable.</p> <p>Would we change anything? Sure. There&rsquo;s a fair bit of space above and below the screen and slimmer bezels would give the Desire a sleeker look, but we&rsquo;ve no serious complaints on looks. Even the front camera is about as low-key as the hardware allows.</p> <p><strong>Read More:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">&nbsp;LG 3G Review</a><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pretty in polycarbonate" alt="HTC Desire Eye review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-2_1.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Eye desires a dunking </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&rsquo;ll let you in on a little secret: in many respects the Desire Eye is a match for the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">One M8</a>. Just don&rsquo;t tell HTC we told you so.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s even better in one respect, too. The Desire Eye is certified to IPx7, a water resistance standard that means the phone can be dunked in water to a depth of a metre and left there for 30 minutes with no ill effects. While we&rsquo;ve seen videos of the HTC One M8 being submerged without heading straight to the great Carphone Warehouse in the sky, it doesn&rsquo;t officially offer any water resistance.</p> <p>The best bit about the Desire Eye&rsquo;s waterproofing ability is that it doesn&rsquo;t need any extra flaps over the microUSB or headphone ports. It&rsquo;s the best kind of weatherproofing: the kind you can completely ignore.</p> <p>Not as taken with the blue shell of our review sample as we are? There&rsquo;s also a red/white version out there.&nbsp;</p> <p>The only thing to note is that while this is one of the friendliest-looking phones HTC makes, it&rsquo;s still fairly large thanks to its 5.2-inch screen. That&rsquo;s definitely a good thing as far as we&rsquo;re concerned.</p> <p>Within a few short months, QHD resolution will probably be the normal resolution for phones of &pound;400 and above, but for now we&rsquo;re perfectly happy with the 1080p resolution offered here. 424ppi is plenty for now, thanks very much.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not quite perfect, though. The HTC Desire Eye doesn&rsquo;t have blacks anywhere near as deep as OLED phones such as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumia-930/nokia-lumia-930/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 930</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, resulting in distinctly lower contrast. It&rsquo;s no deal-breaker - contrast levels are similar on the much-loved One M8 - but black level aficionados might appreciate knowing.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-galaxy-s6-review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S6 Preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Desire Eye&#039;s 5.2in screen is sharp and offers natural-looking rather than over saturated, super-vivid colours" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-11_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Seeing Sense </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The software is also shared with the HTC One M8 which means the Desire Eye runs Android 4.4.4 with HTC&rsquo;s custom Sense interface.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s a neat interface that makes some interesting changes to stock Android. On the light and fluffy side, it makes your apps menu scroll vertically rather than horizontally &mdash; because everyone likes being contrarian once in a while &mdash; and directly under the spotlight sits BlinkFeed.</p> <p>This is a homescreen that offers a reel of the latest updates from Facebook, Twitter, your favourite websites &mdash; whatever you choose to put in. It&rsquo;s a handy extra, but in our experience it&rsquo;s a real love-it-or-hate-it thing, and HTC makes sure getting rid of it is easy enough.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve always liked Sense and it works well on the Desire Eye, but it does feel like it&rsquo;s now due a bit of a pep-up, especially in light of the Lollipop launch. Simplicity is the order of the day, and HTC&rsquo;s interface is now looking just a touch fussier than it might.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography/feature" target="_blank">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Get a sense of your smartphone" alt="HTC Desire Eye " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-34_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC Desire Eye Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong>: Android 4.4.4 with Sense UI</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 5.2in LCD with 1920x1080 resolution (424ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong>: Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 @ 2.3GHz</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong>: 2GB</p> <p><strong>Storage</strong>: 16GB (expandable by up to 128GB with microSD)</p> <p><strong>Camera</strong>: 13MP front with dual-LED flash, 13MP rear with dual-LED flash</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: NFC, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 with aptX</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong>: 2400mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 152 x 74 x 8.5mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 154g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performing monkey </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Spec-wise the Desire Eye is well equipped. Both have dual-LED flashes too, each LED using a different tone to avoid blowing out people&rsquo;s faces, much like Apple&rsquo;s TrueTone flash.</p> <p>Your first assumption might be that they&rsquo;re exactly the same, but they&rsquo;re subtly different. The front camera has a wider-angle lens with a narrower aperture. Look carefully at the lenses and you can actually see the difference in aperture size.</p> <p>While the rear 13-megapixel main sensor may seem like a downgrade from the UltraPixel one used in the HTC One M8, we&rsquo;re pretty happy with what you get here.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve used a few pretty sluggish camera phones recently, but the Desire Eye is quick. Focusing is snappy and shutter lag is virtually non-existent, making it feel like the camera is capturing a shot the exact moment you press the shutter button.</p> <p>This is also one of the few recent Android phones to offer a dedicated shutter button, something that&rsquo;s often left out these days. It&rsquo;s a bit stiff, but it&rsquo;s hugely useful and there&rsquo;s no obligation to use it if you find it a bit finicky.</p> <p>The software behind the Desire Eye&rsquo;s camera is much the same as the HTC One M8&rsquo;s, which means it looks cool, even though buries the HDR mode a little too deeply for considering it&rsquo;s such a useful day-to-day tool for mobile snappers.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="While the rear 13-megapixel main sensor may seem like a downgrade from the UltraPixel one used in the HTC One M8, we’re pretty happy with what you get here - it&#039;s quick, for a start" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-26_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The software behind the Desire Eye’s camera is much the same as the HTC One M8’s, which means it looks cool" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-4_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Image quality is pretty good for the most part, though. Both the front and rear cameras use the same Sony IMX214 sensor seen in phones such as the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/oneplus-one/review" target="_blank">OnePlus One</a>, and it&rsquo;s pretty comparable with the IMX135 sensor used in the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review" target="_blank">LG G3</a>&nbsp;&mdash; more advanced in fact.</p> <p>In daylight your shots will have loads of detail, and we found day/dusk metering to be pretty good. Add this to the very good shooting speed and you have a camera that&rsquo;s bags of fun to use.</p> <p>The only obvious weak point is that for night shooting, the Desire Eye doesn&rsquo;t radically brighten-up images to make them clear. Truly dark scenes will remain more-or-less black unless you switch the flash on. It&rsquo;s a shame, but at least the two-tone flash provides more natural-looking results than a standard white-LED one.</p> <p>We also had some minor issues with the Desire Eye taking photos before it has really achieved focus, but this is a predictable result of being so desperate to be speedy, and can be solved by just taking a few more &lsquo;security&rsquo; shots.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphone-photography/feature" target="_blank">Beta Yourself: Smartphone Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4208" height="2368" title="In daylight your shots will have loads of detail, and we found day/dusk metering to be pretty good" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0100_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4208" height="2368" title="Well that should just about do me for Christmas Day" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0063.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4208" height="2368" title="We had some minor issues with the Desire Eye taking photos before it has really achieved focus" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMAG0042_0.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Get ready for your close-up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So, around the front &mdash; how good are the Desire Eye&rsquo;s selfies? They&rsquo;re great, and the wide 20mm angle of the lens makes taking selfies of multiple people easy enough.</p> <p>Having a sensor as strong as the IMX214 on-board for selfies means it&rsquo;s not all about resolution without added detail &mdash; some higher res sensors hardly seem to actually get you much more detail than a bog-standard one. As long as you have a bit of light to work with, the Desire will render each hair, wrinkle and crease with depressing accuracy.</p> <p>If it all gets a bit much, though, there&rsquo;s a &lsquo;magic&rsquo; slider that smoothes-out those bits that might remind you too much of your own mortality.</p> <p>There are a few other selfie-specific modes too. Photo booth takes a quartet of shots which are then woven together in one nice, Facebook-able image, while Split Capture takes the output from the front and rear cameras and spews them out as a single image.</p> <p>There are improvements to be made in the HTC Desire Eye camera setup, but it&rsquo;s probably less problematic than the HTC One M8 in day-to-day use thanks to its more reliable metering and all-round greater detail capture. Plus you can really use the front camera to work out how dreadful you really look on those post-party mornings.</p> <p><strong>Read More:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/christmas-gift-guide-gadget-gifts-ideas-photographers/feature" target="_blank">Christmas Gift Ideas: 15 gadget gifts for photographers</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="As long as you have a bit of light to work with, the Desire&#039;s front camera will render each hair, wrinkle and crease with depressing accuracy" alt="HTC Desire Eye" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/desire-eye-32.jpg?1418914077" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Juice me up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Battery life is surprisingly good given the 2400mAh battery unit sounds pretty small. Sure enough, it soldiered on through twelve full hours of&nbsp;<em>Twilight</em>&nbsp;at 720p resolution &mdash; enough to turn anyone into a gibbering wreck.</p> <p>Getting this out of a 2400mAh battery is seriously impressive. HTC has clearly put some work into optimisation to get this kind of longevity.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no shortage of little tech wingdings, either. The Nexus 9 feels right, and is <em>just about</em> light enough to use one-handed while reading an article on the train on the way to work.</p> <p>In short, the Nexus 9 makes it pretty obvious why 10in widescreen tablets were never all that popular.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="No wows in the hardware design " alt="Google Nexus 9 review " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-14.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 9 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating System</strong> -&nbsp;Android 5.0 Lollipop</p> <p><strong>Processor -</strong>&nbsp;64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1 @ 2.5GHz, Kepler GPU</p> <p><strong>RAM -</strong>&nbsp;2GB</p> <p><strong>Screen -</strong>&nbsp;8.9in IPS LCD with 2048x1536 resolution (281ppi)</p> <p><strong>Cameras -</strong>&nbsp;8MP rear with 1080p video, 1.6MP front</p> <p><strong>Storage -</strong>&nbsp;16/32GB (not expandable)</p> <p><strong>Connectivity -</strong>&nbsp;Dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, optional 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong> - 6700mAh</p> <p><strong>Dimensions -</strong>&nbsp;228 x 154 x 7.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 425g (436g with 3G/4G)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build me up, break me down </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus might lack some of the gloss of an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> but build quality is more than reasonable. The Nexus 9, on the other hand, maxes out at 32GB.</p> <p>Casual users may well get by with the standard 16GB, but with only 10GB of it actually available to use once you factor in the OS, it&rsquo;s soon gone if you load up a few games and movies. You can obviously bolster this with cloud storage from Google Drive or Dropbox, but it&#39;s not really the same thing. The strong colour reproduction melded with the high resolution, bright backlight and very immediate image give the display plenty of pop.</p> <p>However, purists will notice a few little issues. First, this is an LCD and its black levels aren&rsquo;t close to what you get from an OLED tablet such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4</a>.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also some pretty clear leakage from the backlight, particularly clear at the top of the Nexus 9. It exhibits as a tiny strip of brightness at the top of the screen. You should get used to it, but those with display OCD may find it distracting. It is fairly minor, but is another little negative to jot down if you&rsquo;re after the ultimate Android tablet.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-105/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="This resolution is enough " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-3.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What flavour is that Lollipop? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So far, so ordinary: we&rsquo;ve seen better screen performance from both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-84/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Tab S</a> tablets. It&rsquo;s the software the Nexus 9 is really here to show off.</p> <p>This is the first tablet to run Android 5.0 Lollipop, the version the rest of the Android-using world is going to be clamouring after for weeks or, more likely, months. So what&rsquo;s it all about?</p> <p>Android 5.0 Lollipop has a new look. It appears and feels familiar, but everything has been given a subtle facelift. The soft keys are new. The apps menu now looks like a series of white pages and you double-swipe down from the top of the screen to access quick settings toggles and screen brightness.</p> <p>The lock screen is new, too, giving you notifications without having to take the tablet out of sleep mode. Very handy and about time. These are all things that we&rsquo;ve seen before in other custom interfaces. It&rsquo;s mostly just a neat, simple, quite cute UI &ndash;&nbsp;not a revolution.</p> <p>Google has also reworked a bunch of the standard Android apps in the Nexus 9&rsquo;s Android 5.0. Gmail, the Contacts book, Calendar and even the Play Store have all been given a spring clean.</p> <p>But speaking of apps, it&#39;s also worth noting that many still aren&#39;t optimised for larger Android screens. Developers seem happy to produce different versions of their apps for iPhone and iPad, but many seem content to release just one for Android, which is then simply blown-up to fit tablet screens. That can have some ugly results.</p> <p>But Lollipop is pretty elsewhere, with a colour palette that now has that extra hint of pastel to it. And everything moves with that extra bit of pep. Google seems to want the Nexus 9 to be something that would slide gracefully into an IKEA show home in its software as well as its hardware design.</p> <p>Is it flat-out better than what you get with the Google Now interface available for just about any Android device these days? Maybe, but not by a huge margin.</p> <p>What really matters is the stuff in the background &ndash;&nbsp;those turning cogs you can&rsquo;t see on the surface. Android 5.0 now supports 64-bit processors and is better primed for connections to other devices than ever before. Our guess is that this means deeper integration with Android Wear watches, co-operation that we don&rsquo;t even know about yet. For now, it means you can take up where you left off with media and apps in Lollipop goodies.</p> <p>A lot of that promise is about the future, not right now. For example, while the Tegra K1 CPU used in the Nexus 9 is 64-bit, there&rsquo;s nothing that specifically makes use of that more advanced architecture at present.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not noticeably faster than previous top Android tablets, either. There&rsquo;s the odd hint of lag here and there, undoubtedly because Android 5.0 Lollipop is a baby chick still brushing off those remaining bits of eggshell.</p> <p>We imagine it&rsquo;ll soon be improved in an update before too long, and it&rsquo;s hardly bad at present anyway. Just the occasional stutter, and some apps not loading as fast as we&rsquo;d like, especially given Android 5.0 uses a special ART runtime that&rsquo;s meant to speed this whole process up. We&rsquo;ll have a full review of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-45/review">Android 5.0 Lollipop</a> up on Stuff.tv very soon.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-20.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-17.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-16.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The numbers of the beast </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Hardware-wise, the Nexus 9 is one of the most powerful Android devices ever made.</p> <p>Its Tegra K1 CPU is a dual-core 2.5GHz chipset &ndash; it may have just two cores, but they don&rsquo;t half pack a punch. In the Geekbench 3 benchmark, it scores roughly the same points per core as you get out of all of the Nexus 7&rsquo;s four cores. For the spec-heads out there, it scores 1970 points per core, 3332 total in Geekbench 3.</p> <p>However, the real meat of the K1 processor is in the graphics side. It uses a Kepler DX1, which has 192 cores &ndash; sounds ridiculous and it sorta is.&nbsp;</p> <p>We thought all this power might end up being squirted into oblivion, but there are already some games that make terrific use of it. For example, <em>Dead Trigger 2</em> offers a special graphics mode not available on other devices that adds gorgeous water effects, the kind you&rsquo;d only normally see in console or PC games. Yes, that does mean the game is now jammed full of puddles, but they aren&rsquo;t half pretty.</p> <p>These optimisations are already in place because this isn&rsquo;t the first time a Tegra K1 has been jammed into an Android device: the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia-shield/review-0" target="_blank">Nvidia Shield Tablet</a> has one, too (a slightly different version). Nvidia went as far as to bring over classics such as <em>Portal</em> and <em>Half-life 2</em> to the Shield Tablet, but they don&rsquo;t seem to be available for the Nexus 9 yet.</p> <p>Fingers crossed they will be at some point, though. If only for show-off points.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia-shield/review-0" target="_blank">Nvidia Shield Tablet review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sounds ridiculous and it sorta is " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-game.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Front-loaded Bieber blasters </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another nice little extra for gamers is the Nexus 9&rsquo;s front facing speakers. They&rsquo;re not too obvious, and sit to the extreme ends of each side of the tablet (when held in landscape).</p> <p>This sort of setup is top-notch in terms of positioning. You get that immersive stereo effect and they&rsquo;re virtually impossible to block to the extent that the sound becomes muffled. Even if you put a finger over each port, the sound isn&rsquo;t choked. We managed to ruin the sound by squishing a palm against each outlet, but you do have to try pretty hard.</p> <p>The Nexus 9&rsquo;s actual sound quality is a bit more of a mixed affair.</p> <p>With music in particular, the Nexus 9 can sound a bit strained, the mids unnatural. And treble lacks finesse and the clarity of some rivals. These are similar, or the same, BoomSound speakers used in phones like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8</a><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">)</a>. But what is great in a phone doesn&#39;t seem quite so hot in this larger tablet.</p> <p>Still, sound quality remains better than average. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a>&nbsp;actually offers greater volume, more power and greater clarity, even though its speakers are in the &#39;wrong&#39; place.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Milli-amped up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Battery life is pretty good. But HTC and Google still seem to be working under the assumption tablet cameras aren&rsquo;t too important.</p> <p>We&#39;d wouldn&#39;t necesarily argue with that, but if you are a tablet snapper you&#39;ll likely find that your greatest annoyance isn&rsquo;t image quality but autofocus speed. It feels sluggish, not the sort of camera to whip out to capture your dog as it bounds across a park, flinging 360 degree drool. You&rsquo;d probably end up with a photo of some grass. Maybe a tree if you&rsquo;re lucky.&nbsp;The Nexus 9 is also prone to overexposing just about every cloud in the sky, too.</p> <p>Approach the camera with patience and you can get some reasonable results with pretty decent colour saturation, but&nbsp;we&#39;d recommend sticking to your phone camera unless you simply must let absolutely everyone see that you&rsquo;re rocking the new Nexus.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/using-your-ipad-air-2-camera-fine-and-here-s-why/feature" target="_blank">Using your iPad as a camera is fine, and here&#39;s why</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Autofocus is slow " alt="Google Nexus 9 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-9-12.jpg?1417398769" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 9 Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 9 shows where Android tablets of the future should be headed &mdash; a little less geek locked in their bedroom, a bit more &lsquo;ordinary person&rsquo; relaxing in the lounge.
