So there&rsquo;s little logic in that statement, but regardless, this retro-fabulous trinket is worth a look as an interesting relic of wearable tech.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s the HP-01, Hewlett Packard&rsquo;s then-innovative foray into the field from 1977, and it weighs about one-third of a pound and comes in chrome - a prototype colour that never hit the production line. Way back when, the consumer version in other finishes sold for US$600 (around &pound;350).</p> <p>But this one is listed with a Buy it Now price of US$14,500 (about &pound;8630) on eBay, and it might be the only way to easily locate one of these suckers right now. We probably wouldn&rsquo;t recommend wearing it at both that weight and price, but wearable enthusiasts with a chunk of change might consider this as a serious collector&rsquo;s item.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNIQUE-1977-Hewlett-Packard-HP-01-CHROME-PROTOTYPE-LED-calculator-digital-watch-/191281166500?afsrc=1">eBay</a> via <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/11/5992509/hp-made-a-smartwatch-in-1977-and-you-can-buy-a-prototype-for-14500">The Verge</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/music/10-gadgets-you-ll-probably-never-use-again/feature">10 gadgets you&rsquo;ll probably never use again</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="799" title="HP-01" alt="HP-01" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hp-calculator-watch.jpg?1407825182" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> EA Access subscriptions available to all Xbox One owners </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Announced <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/fully-charged-ea-s-all-you-can-play-xbox-one-service-canon-debuts-new-powershot-cameras-and-pl">late last month</a>, Electronic Arts&rsquo; new subscription gaming plan, EA Access, is now available to all Xbox One owners. The Hasselblad HV is basically a Sony A99 in fancier clothes &ndash; and at over twice the price.</p> <p>The HV&rsquo;s innards and controls are the same the A99&rsquo;s, but it has a more rugged outer shell made of titanium and high-grade aluminium, plus a removeable &ldquo;super resin&rdquo; case which enables it to operate in temperatures between -40 degrees and 80 degrees Celsius. And while the HP Chromebook 11’s keyboard isn’t such a joy to type on as the Pixel’s, it’s still better than most, and considerably better than the clacky boards of most £300-£500 Windows laptops.&nbsp;</p> <p>If you’re looking for something small, light and affordable to bash out words on, this knocks socks off typing on an iPad or a Surface. And given that Google and co. pitch these things as homework machines, they’ve concentrated on getting the important bits right.&nbsp;</p> <p>The touchpad, on the other hand, is made from a matte plastic that’s too grippy when you compare it to the slidey glass panels that Apple uses. It turns on in a flash (pun intended, solid-state memory fans), and web browsing, YouTube videos and Chrome apps are delay-free.</p> <p>Obviously the flipside is that it won’t do powerful desktop processing tasks, but if your work is mainly word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and email, this’ll do the lot very quickly. Again, it doesn’t have quite the microsecond smoothness of the Pixel, but it’s lighter and less than a quarter of the price.&nbsp;</p> <p>In the couple of hours we’ve spent using it, the Exynos 5250 APU has only got slightly warm. We’d be interested to see how well it copes with Ubuntu (which can be added to Chromebooks fairly easily), which would add more powerful software to its repertoire. Although it would probably void the warranty, too.&nbsp;</p> <p>Perhaps the biggest point in the Chromebook 11's favour is that it charges via microUSB – a really superb piece of design that will make people’s lives easier and kill a few less arctic foxes.
