As the worldwide totals grew, so did the prospects for a sequel, and now here we are.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/adambvary/pacific-rim-2-release-date">BuzzFeed</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/how-make-250ft-tall-monster-fighting-robot/feature">How to make a 250ft tall monster-fighting robot</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> YouTube adding 60fps playback, tip jars, and more </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>An array of significant upgrades are coming to YouTube soon, as revealed by CEO Suan Wojcicki at the Vidcon conference keynote yesterday in Anaheim, California. With luck, any potential deal won&rsquo;t disrupt what&rsquo;s made Twitch so wildly successful to date.</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://variety.com/2014/digital/news/youtube-to-acquire-videogame-streaming-service-twitch-for-1-billion-sources-1201185204/">Variety</a>, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/news/article_email/SB10001424052702304422704579570601736756672-lMyQjAxMTA0MDEwODExNDgyWj">The Wall Street Journal</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one-vs-sony-ps4-depth/feature">Microsoft Xbox One vs Sony PS4: in depth</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Is Youtube going to pony up for Twitch?" alt="Youtube to acquire Twitch?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/twitch_0.jpg?1400488424" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> First trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar released </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Christopher Nolan&rsquo;s been on an incredible winning streak over the last decade, thanks to Inception and The Dark Knight Trilogy, so getting our first glimpse at his next film is big news indeed. Perhaps Google has no gaming plans for Chromecast, but that would be a shame given that Amazon&#39;s rumoured to be working on a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/amazon-set-top-box-tiny-chromecast-and-offering-game-streaming/news">gaming-ready dongle</a> and the fact that Apple TV supports just such a feature via Airplay.</p> <p>Back to the here and now and we found that video streamed in HD very smoothly on our fairly &quot;normal&quot; 16Mbps broadband connection, but those still making do with just a couple of megs should expect Netflix&#39;s adaptive streams to deliver softer, lower-res videos, while ambitiously selecting 1080p from YouTube will necessitate a fair bit of buffering if you want an uninterrupted video.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE: BBC iPlayer is Ready To Cast </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google knows the way to British hearts. Casting BBC iPlayer is now just as simple as doing so with Netflix and YouTube. With smartphones and tablets on your home network, it&#39;s just a case of making sure the iPlayer app is up to date before hitting the new in-app Cast button.</p> <p>BBC iPlayer on desktop hasn&#39;t been treated to a Cast button just yet, but if you&#39;re happy to settle for lower quality streams, you can as ever cast a tab from Chrome. Stick to Casting from mobile devices and streams max out at 720p, which makes for a perfectly crisp picture - as with Netflix, iPlayer automatically adjusts the quality depending on the connection but as long as you&#39;ve got fairly solid broadband you should be up to 720p very shortly after starting the stream.</p> <p>As with any Chromecast-friendly app, you can still navigate around your smartphone or tablet as <em>The Great British Sewing Bee</em> is playing on your TV screen.</p> <p>There&#39;s no support for BBC Radio or BBC Sport just yet, but we&#39;re sure both are just a matter of time. But that won&#39;t stop &#39;Casters getting excited at the prospect of ten - yes ten! - new apps. There&#39;s no update to the Chromecast itself, just download the compatible apps and look for the Chromecast symbol at the top. Just keep your expectation in check - these are not the apps you&#39;re looking for.</p> <p>In the first batch of Google dongle-friendly apps comes Plex, Avia and RealPlayer Cloud, all hell bent on becoming your go-to media server and cloud storage buddy. But RealPlayer Cloud, for Android, iOS, Kindle Fire and desktop, isn&#39;t available outside the US yet (we pre-registered for updates here in the UK) and the popular but sometimes messy Plex requires a US$3.99 per month PlexPass.</p> <p>That&#39;s not a huge amount but considering the Chromecast itself is only &pound;30 and everything else is free (bar the Netflix sub), it seems unncessary. Plex is rolling out Chromecast compatibility to free users in the near future, but for now we&#39;d give <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.videon.android.mediaplayer&amp;hl=en">Avia Media Player</a> a go. It&#39;s far from perfect itself and enabling Chromecast compatibility requires a one-off payment of &pound;1.86 (US$2.99), but it does the job.</p> <p>If you can forgive connection and buffering stutters, you can now play your own local videos plus media dragged in from Dropbox, Facebook and Picasa. Videos have a video reel icon rather than a thumbnail, which is very annoying if you shoot a lot of untitled smartphone footage, but making playlists is easy and it&#39;ll do until Google introduces a better integrated alternative.</p> <p>Still, there&#39;s nothing here to rival <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-takes-google-chromecast-streaming-stick/news">Roku&#39;s incoming &pound;50 Streaming Stick</a>, which promises easy playback of locally stored videos on smartphones and tablets with the Roku app.</p> <p>Elsewhere in the new Chromecast apps are VEVO for ad-laden music videos, Red Bull TV for skateboarding and motorsports, PostTV for news footage from The Washington Post and the confusing but useful BeyondPod Podcast Manager for blasting out Brian Cox in audio-only form. There&#39;s also the international video app Viki for fans of Korean or Venezuelan TV, and playlist app Songza, which had dropped off the Google Play store at the time of writing but will probably be back on soon.</p> <p>So the best Chromecast apps are still the ones that have been there all along - Netflix, YouTube, Google Play Movies. You can&rsquo;t see an on-screen pointer, so there&rsquo;s no way to use your TV as a proper monitor, and while embedded videos (from Vimeo, say) work, they do so with stuttering playback and choppy sound.</p> <p>As a little bonus feature, it&rsquo;s fine, but it really needs to be viewed as such, at least until Google can perfect it and bring it out of beta. We&#39;re hoping that happens sooner rather than later, as it could open up almost all of the streaming services on the web and make Chromecast a far more flexible video-on-demand device.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-browser-cast-button.jpg?1395767087" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-browser-on-tv.jpg?1395767087" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Chromecast is cheap, easy to use and works well for Netflix, YouTube and now BBC iPlayer, but it&rsquo;s not really bringing anything truly essential to the video streaming table just yet. If you have an Apple TV, PS3, Xbox 360, smart TV or smart set-top box, chances are the Chromecast just isn&rsquo;t necessary, because these are all able to get YouTube, Netflix and more onto your telly already (and they don&rsquo;t require a companion device to do so).</p> <p>The addition of more essential apps (rather than filler we&#39;ve never heard of) and a more robust web-casting experience could make Chromecast a far more appealing prospect for tech-heads in the future, though. Plex, Avia and RealPlayer Cloud fill a gap but we hope Google is working on its own AirPlay-rivalling solution for mirroring locally stored videos and photos. If not, there&#39;s always the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-takes-google-chromecast-streaming-stick/news">&pound;50 Roku Streaming Stick</a>, which lands in Blighty in May.</p> <p>But if you&#39;re on a budget and want to re-awesomise your dumb TV or you&#39;re just fed up of squinting at videos on your laptop then this dongle is still your cheapest route to Netflix nirvana.</p> <p>Original review by <a href="https://twitter.com/samkieldsen" target="_blank">Sam Kieldsen</a>, additional words and testing by <a href="https://twitter.com/sophiecharara" target="_blank">Sophie Charara</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-in-hand-front.jpg?1395767087" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> picture </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> sound </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> design </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> smarts </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 7 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Tiny and costing a pittance, Chromecast does exactly what it claims to &ndash; OK, so many of the movies in it are either (a) tempting but cost money or (b) free but bloody awful, but delve deep enough and you&rsquo;ll unearth the occasional gem: stuff like <em>Night of the Living Dead</em> (see above), <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkYT2_GoV20">His Girl Friday</a></em>, <em><a href="http://youtu.be/6FZRjLPtPLM">Enduring Love</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEaxG7HBK5c">Shopgirl</a></em>.</p> <p>These films are often old, it&rsquo;s true, and some of them have foreign subtitles, but crucially they&rsquo;re free. So no looking that gift horse in the mouth, eh?</p> <p>Another option is <a href="http://www.crackle.com/">Crackle</a>, a service owned by Sony that offers free movies and TV shows to watch through mobile devices, computers, consoles and smart TVs. The selection is a bit more exciting than YouTube&rsquo;s, although you&rsquo;ll have to periodically sit through ads (much like watching a film on TV). At the time of writing Crackle&rsquo;s free films include <em>American Psycho</em>, <em>The Squid and the Whale</em> and <em>Requiem for a Dream</em> and its TV shows include <em>Seinfeld</em> and <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/freemoviesonline">raft of links to free online movies</a> arranged by genre. They&rsquo;re almost all pre-1970, although there are a handful of more recent shorts and documentaries. Some highlights include Kurosawa&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2012/11/watch_kurosawas_irashomoni_free_online_the_film_that_introduced_japanese_cinema_to_the_west.html"><em>Rashomon</em></a> and Tarkovsky&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAhbcy8mP4"><em>Andrei Rublev</em></a>, so it&rsquo;s fair to say it might suit cinephiles more than casual viewers. Yes, unfortunately the Chromecast can’t draw power from HDMI (it may be able to with certain HDMI v1.4 TVs, but Google isn’t clear on this), so you need to use this extra cable to either plug it into a USB port on your TV or a standard power socket. You can cast from mobile devices running Android 2.3 and iOS 6 and above, or computers running Chrome OS, or Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.7 and above. Netflix videos look superbly sharp on the bigger screen, and controlling them using your phone, tablet or laptop as a remote works fairly well – I found there was a slight delay, but it never became irritating. On Netflix, I watched a variety of shows and films – Luther, Orange Is The New Black, The Tudors, Cabin In The Woods, Freaks and Geeks – and found all of them to be as good as if they were being broadcast on TV the "normal" way, or played from a DVD. Quality is HD where available, but don't expect Blu-ray-rivalling crispness – this is a notch or two below.</p> <p>YouTube videos can look a bit blurry and compressed on the big screen, but that’s the fault of the source video, not Chromecast. Higher quality videos looked absolutely fine, and again can be easily controlled using the casting device. As with Netflix, HD can be displayed if the source video allows it. One nice aspect of YouTube casting is that, once you’ve hit the button, your device will keep casting whichever videos you choose until you hit it to turn the function off. That means you can sit around with a few friends and watch a series of videos without having to keep tapping the cast button every time you pick a new one.</p> <p>The Marvell Armada 1500 chip at the Chromecast's heart is clearly powerful enough to provide slick playback of demanding video, and supports most modern video codecs and even DTS-HD surround audio – so there's headroom for the Chromecast to deliver moving pictures from pretty much any site you send its way.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="YouTube cast button" alt="YouTube cast button" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/youtube-cast-button.jpg?1376384486" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="YouTube cast on TV" alt="YouTube cast on TV" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/youtube-cast-on-tv.jpg?1376384486" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What’s it bad at? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As already mentioned, the Chrome tab casting feature is still in beta, and there’s definitely a little room for improvement here. There’s no cursor visible on the cast tab on your TV, so you still have to use your computer or mobile device as the primary screen. There’s also a noticeable delay between, say, scrolling on your laptop browser and the cast image scrolling down. So tab casting works, but it might not be something you find yourself using all that often.</p> <p>You can, for instance, cast a tab including a Vimeo or iPlayer video to your TV and watch that video, but it’ll be slightly jerky, or the audio won't sync quite right. Hopefully Google is working on upgrading this experience now, as it could be a killer feature.</p> <p>It's also worth noting that Chromecast is more limited than <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-tv-video-review/video">Apple TV</a>, as it requires a companion device to function: without your phone, tablet or laptop, it's a waste of plastic. Apple TV comes with its own remote and its own multimedia portal, and while Sky's new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/now-tv-box-powered-sky/now-tv-box-hands-review/feature">Now TV box</a> lacks the casting ability, it's designed as a standalone, not an accessory. Either could also better suit the more&nbsp;techno-phobic family members of your family.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>After a day with Chromecast, I'm seriously impressed with its Netflix and YouTube performance – especially given the device’s size and price – and the ease with which it can be set up and used.</p> <p>If you already have a way of getting these videos onto your TV, however, you may find that the dongle has little to offer you at this stage; its Chrome tab casting ability works well enough, but it doesn’t yet feel solid or reliable enough to be a “must use” feature.</p> <p>It'll be interesting to see which other apps gain “casting” abilities in the coming months: with enough support, and with a Chrome tab casting fix, Chromecast could become a compelling little dongle – whether your TV's already smart or not.</p> <p>Before you get too excited, I should remind you that the Chromecast is not currently available outside of the US – but there are <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-play-uk-gets-tv-shows-chromecast-incoming/news">hints</a> that it may arrive in the UK before too long.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-on-tv-wide.jpg?1376384486" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Chromecast hands-on </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We put the web-slinging TV dongle through its paces </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-chromecast-hands-review/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Google Netflix TV YouTube Fri, 02 Aug 2013 16:07:07 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1425252 at http://www.stuff.tv
