We pit it, spec-for-spec, against the cheap and cheerful Tesco Hudl, current Android pick-of-the-bunch the Google Nexus 7, and the so-premium-it-hurts, Retina display-equipped Apple iPad Mini 2. Google&rsquo;s pad has a thinner frame on either side of the screen, whilst keeping the top and bottom bezel much the same, which means it can be easily grasped in one hand for portrait reading. The Kindle Fire and Hudl are a more traditional tablet shape: fatter around the edges. The Kindle&rsquo;s camera is positioned for use in landscape mode, while the Nexus 7 works better in portrait.</p> <p dir="ltr">Given its larger screen, you&#39;d think the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad Mini 2</a> might be substantially larger than the Android tablets, but at 200 x 134.7 x 7.5mm it&#39;s the thinnest by some margin, and only a wee bit bigger than the others.</p> <p dir="ltr">All three Android tabs are built from matte plastic, though the Kindle wins out aesthetically with its angular, tapered edges on the rear that are faintly reminiscent of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-surface-windows-rt/review">Microsoft Surface</a>. No bad thing. The iPad Mini? Its elegant aluminium and glass body is a class apart from the Android models &ndash; and that&#39;s one of the reasons why the asking price is so much higher.</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>Apple iPad Mini 2</p> <p><strong>Best of the rest: </strong>Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Amazon Kindle Fire HDX rear" alt="Amazon Kindle Fire HDX rear" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/HDX-rear.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 (2013) rear" alt="Google Nexus 7 (2013) rear" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/NEX-rear.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesco Hudl rear" alt="Tesco Hudl rear" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/tesco-hudl-rear.JPG" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Mini 2 rear" alt="iPad Mini 2 rear" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-mini-retina-rear.png" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Same screen, different body </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">Both the Nexus and the Fire HDX 7 have dramatically improved screens compared to their predecessors. They&rsquo;re equipped with 7-inch, 1920x1200 IPS-LCD designs boasting an ultra-crisp 323ppi. &nbsp; On paper there&rsquo;s little to separate the two screens, although the HDX boasts &#39;100% sRGB technology&#39; that it claims results in improved colour accuracy, while Google claims nothing beyond eye-slicingly sharp resolution. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">Our review</a> calls the Nexus 7&#39;s screen &quot;razor sharp, brilliantly bright and altogether rather jaw-dropping&quot; and the HDX gets similar praise &ndash; with one caveat: &quot;white webpages can nudge towards the creamier end of the spectrum and when using apps or browsing pages with a white background, you occasionally encounter a blue tint, especially in the corners. It&#39;s minimal, barely noticeable when watching movies, but once you spot it you won&#39;t be able to stop your eyes travelling back to it.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">After launching the first-gen iPad Mini with a somewhat disappointing 1024x768 screen, Apple has gone all out with its successor: the iPad Mini 2 offers a 7.9in 2048 x 1536 Retina display (also 323ppi) &ndash; larger than the above Android models&#39; displays but just as sharp. Our review notes that the iPad Air&#39;s screen (with slightly less pixel density) tops the Mini 2&#39;s when it comes to vibrancy and colour accuracy, but the Mini 2&#39;s remains among the best tablet screens around thanks to its wide viewing angles and high brightness level, which means you rarely need to nudge it past half power.</p> <p dir="ltr">And the Hudl? While it doesn&#39;t match the better-than-1080p screens of the other trio, its 7in 1600x900 (242ppi) display is better than you&#39;d find on most &pound;120 tablets, and offers decent viewing angles. In our review, however, we weren&#39;t especially impressed with the brightness, contrast or colour range &ndash; things all the other screens here excel in &ndash; and found the display to be &quot;an absolute smudge-lover&quot;, attracting fingerprints a little too readily.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Winner: </strong>Apple iPad Mini 2</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Best of the rest: </strong>Google Nexus 7</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 screen" alt="Google Nexus 7 screen" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/NEX-front.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="848" title="Kindle Fire HDX 7 screen" alt="Kindle Fire HDX 7 screen" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/HDX-family.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Mini 2 screen" alt="iPad Mini 2 screen" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-mini-retina-review-screen-colours.png" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesco Hudl screen" alt="Tesco Hudl screen" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/tesco-hudl-review-hands-on-screen-bright_0.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Power play </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">The Tesco Hudl is the weakest model when it comes to on-paper specs, with 1GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz quad-core Rockchip processor. Our review describes it thus: &quot;the Hudl generally flies, tearing up HD movies and games such as Bounty Arms like a turbo trolley tearing up Aisle Six at 3am. Web browsing is smooth enough, though we were surprised to see the Hudl struggle with streaming movies compared to its rivals amid talk of dual-band Wi-Fi.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">The Nexus isn&rsquo;t slow by any means &ndash; there&rsquo;s a Qualcomm S4 Pro under the hood running at 1.5GHz with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Our review notes that &quot;the device feels incredibly fast and responsive no matter how much you multi-task or game. 1080p movie performance is equally smooth - there&#39;s a moment of lag to load, but after that we&#39;ve not spotted a single judder in the playback of an entire season of Breaking Bad in HD.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">In our test the Nexus never stuttered, so there may be little real-world advantage to the Kindle&rsquo;s additional grunt. The Amazon tab packs the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at an incredible 2.2GHz, plus a mighty Adreno 330 GPU. And it flies: &quot;They&#39;ve chucked everything at the HDX, and Fire 3.0 runs beautifully as a result. It&#39;s amazing that a tablet as reliably fast and capable as this new Kindle Fire is going for just &pound;200 &ndash; Amazon&#39;s really stepped up the performance, and it makes the difference in the little bits of navigation around the OS. Some of the stores, such as Games, can stutter when scrolling through choices, but apps download quickly thanks to dual-band Wi-Fi, while streaming is spot-on.&quot;</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 has undergone a major upgrade in the hardware stakes from the first Mini, but you might not know it from its on-paper specs: it sports less than a GB of RAM and its A7 processor is dual-core and clocked at 1.3GHz. That just goes to show that on-paper specs don&#39;t mean a whole lot in the real world, because the Mini 2 runs as smooth as you could wish for and has no issues with HD video &ndash; in fact, it streams video more smoothly than the Nexus 7 and HDX 7. Still, we feel the Kindle has the edge in terms of raw power.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Kindle and Nexus are available in 16, 32GB and 64GB variants, but neither can be expanded. The iPad Mini 2 offers all those sizes, plus 128GB.</p> <p><strong>Winner: </strong>Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 7</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Qualcomm Snapdragon" alt="Qualcomm Snapdragon" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/Qualcomm.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You want to take a picture, with a tablet? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">Any self-respecting tablet has to have a reasonable front-facing camera for Skype, Google Hangouts and lots of sodding selfies. &nbsp; In this department there&rsquo;s little to split the four devices: the Nexus and iPad have a 1.2MP sensor, the HDX 7 a 1.3MP one and the Hudl a 2MP one. None will win any awards, although the iPad Mini 2&#39;s works very well for video calls.</p> <p dir="ltr">The HDX 7 doesn&#39;t even have a rear camera, while the Hudl packs a woeful 3MP effort. That&rsquo;s a fair whack more capacity, but in reality the higher-clocked Snapdragon 800 in the HDX 7 is a thirstier processor, so real-life figures are more closely matched: we managed to get around 9.5 to 10 hours of constant gaming out of the HDX 7, putting it ever-so-slightly above its Google rival.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Tesco Hudl is poorly-served by its battery. It&#39;s quoted as providing 9 hours of use but we found that optimistic - even with light use it was almost dead after a day.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 lasted a full 9.5 hours in our HD video playback test, and will go on far longer with normal use. In short, anyone who likes to experiment with or tweak their gadgets will prefer the Nexus 7.</p> <p dir="ltr">In contrast, Amazon&rsquo;s thick FireOS 3.0 &lsquo;Mojito&rsquo; skin hides almost all aspects of Android&rsquo;s desktop-style UI with a huge carousel that puts your music, books and movies front and centre. Fortunately, it&rsquo;s now much simpler to use, with a conventional app drawer that you can pin your media to, and context-sensitive menus you pull in from the sides of the screen. Amazon has the media side of things covered with direct, dangerously simple access to its huge online candy shop. Unfortunately the same is not true of apps: the Kindle offers a cut-down selection compared to Google Play, which is the thorniest part of Amazon&rsquo;s &lsquo;walled garden&rsquo; approach to the Kindle ecosystems. The plus side is that Amazon provides near limitless cloud backup for nothing, builds in customisable profiles or kids (FreeTime) and even provides live help via videoconferencing (Mayday).</p> <p dir="ltr">The Tesco Hudl, like the HDX 7, uses Android Jelly Bean, but it&#39;s an older 4.2.2 version upon which Tesco has slathered some of its own touches in the form of a few &#39;apps&#39; for (really just links to) services like Blinkbox, Tesco Bank, Tesco Direct, Tesco Mobile and Tesco Clubcard. The latter is likely to be of some interest to those that shop at Tesco regularly, as it tracks Clubcard points and shows you relevant offers. Aside from that, it&#39;s pretty much stock Android.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2, of course, uses iOS 7. It&#39;s our favourite tablet operating system due to the sheer amount of tablet-tailored apps on offer (Android is poorly served in comparison, with most of its tablet apps merely being upscaled from the phone version), and comes with plenty of freebies like Garage, iMovie, iPhoto and Pages. iCloud, meanwhile, keeps everything synced across all your iDevices and computers. If apps are more important to you than web browsing and media consumption, the iPad should be your choice - even though it&#39;s significantly pricier than the others here.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Winner</strong>: Draw. If we had to pick between the two? Despite the extra layer of control that the HDX 7&#39;s FireOS 3.0 provides and its slightly better battery life, we&#39;d still plump for the Nexus 7 as the pick of the small Android slates: the openness and customisability of its &#39;pure&#39; Android KitKat OS gives it a small edge.</p> <p dir="ltr">The iPad Mini 2 is expensive, starting at &pound;320 for the Wi-Fi only 16GB model (the 4G-compatible 128GB model is a staggering &pound;660), but features the largest screen, sturdiest build quality and, thanks to iOS 7, access to a substantially better selection of tablet apps than any of the Android models. It&#39;s our pick of the bunch here because, in the words of our review, &quot;the Retina Mini really is the future of tablets: supremely portable, bursting with amazing apps and with no significant compromises.&quot; It&#39;s Stuff&#39;s preferred small tablet &ndash; in fact it&#39;s our second favourite tablet on the market after the iPad Air.</p> <p dir="ltr">If you want to read more about all these tablets, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">enjoy our Nexus 7 review here</a>, our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">iPad Mini 2 review here</a>, our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/tesco-hudl/review">Hudl review here</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX 7 review here</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-7-amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-apple-ipad-mini-tesco-hudl.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Mini tablet showdown </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Kindle Fire HDX, Nexus 7, Hudl and iPad Mini 2 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/kindle-fire-hdx/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx-7-vs-google-nexus-7-2013-weigh/feature#comments iPad Mini 2 Kindle Fire HDX Nexus 7 Tablets Mon, 09 Dec 2013 13:37:15 +0000 Will Findlater 1428153 at http://www.stuff.tv Best small tablets: Google Nexus 7 (2013) vs iPad Mini vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 http://www.stuff.tv/apple/google-nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-vs-samsung-galaxy-note-80/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> They’re tablets, they’re compact and they’re all vying for your hard-earned cash – so toe-to-toe, how do they shape up? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 7 2 vs iPad Mini vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" alt="Google Nexus 7 2 vs iPad Mini vs Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/nexus-7-vs-ipad-mini-vs-note-8.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Google has just revealed the second generation of the Nexus 7 tablet (read our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review">full review</a>), and it has the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini/review">iPad Mini</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-note-80/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0</a> firmly in its crosshairs. It's definitely closer in build quality to the iPad Mini than the original Nexus 7. It’s lighter, thinner and narrower than the previous Nexus 7, but retains a similarly soft-touch, slightly rubbery back.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 (340g) is more plasticky still, shiny white and accented by faux metal touches. While we wouldn't call it ugly, it's certainly the least attractive and well-built of the three models, with a bit of a "my first tablet" feel to it.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPad Mini</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Build quality – Nexus 7 2" alt="Build quality – Nexus 7 2" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-build.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The original <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-7/review">Nexus 7</a>, with a 7in screen and 1280 x 800 resolution, already had the beating of the iPad Mini with its 1024 x 768 7.9in display – at least when it comes to pixel density and sharpness – and Google has upped its game with the second-gen Nexus 7. The new model has a 7in 1920 x 1200 display, giving it a pixel density of 323ppi to the iPad Mini’s 162ppi. The performance has been boosted too: it’s now able to display 30 percent more colours. In our review we note that it "can show films in true 1080p HD, and they look superb - far better than any other tablet of this size".</p> <p>The iPad Mini, however, does have a far larger screen, with around 30 percent extra space. And its colour reproduction and contrast are excellent. The extra screen real estate does, in our opinion, make for a better tablet app experience – while the Nexus 7's size (barely bigger than a phablet) makes it better for media consumption (videos, ebooks etc.). However, as we say in our review, "you'll feel a little let down by its 1024x768 pixel count".</p> <p>The Galaxy Note 8.0 has a bigger screen than even the iPad Mini, and its 8in display marks it out as something that can be used for work rather than just play. There is, of course, a excellent S-Pen stylus for sketching, note-scribbling and more. Our review notes its "good contrast and vibrant colours" (the iPad's colour reproduction comes across as somewhat more natural, however), but in comparison to the Nexus 7 the 1280 x 800 resolution gives icons and text "a little fuzziness on close inspection".</p> <p><strong>Winner: Nexus 7</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Screen – iPad Mini" alt="Screen – iPad Mini" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-screen.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Processing power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The new Nexus 7 has a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 at its heart, accompanied by 2GB of RAM. It’ll be interesting to see how the next iPad Mini (possibly being unveiled in September) holds up against the new Nexus 7. The current model has fewer pixels to push and thus feels nippy for most tasks, only stuttering occasionally – when viewing 3D maps for example.</p> <p>The Note 8.0 is possibly the nippiest performer of the three, and excels at multi-tasking. As our review says, it's "speedy and smooth – whether you’re careering around Asphalt 7 or watching an HD movie on one half of the screen while planning your escape via Google Maps on the other".</p> <p><strong>Winner: Galaxy Note 8.0<br /></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="Processing power – Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" alt="Processing power – Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-8.0-review-1_0.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Operating system </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There was a time when Android couldn’t touch iOS in the usability stakes, but that’s no longer the case. With Jelly Bean, Google’s OS has finally reached a place where it can be talked about in the same breath as Apple’s: a smooth, crisp and lag-free interface. The new Nexus 7 comes with Android 4.3 (in fact it’s the first device to do so), which sports slightly more polish as well as a handful of new features, parental controls (you can prevent profiles accessing certain apps and making in-app purchases). Being a Nexus device, the OS is devoid of any third-party embellishments – it’s pure Google, and a slicker experience for it. The issue here is apps; as we note in our review: "Google really needs to be pushing developers to add greater support for larger, more pixel-tastic screens if it hopes to defeat Apple in the tablet battle."</p> <p>iOS 6 is on board the iPad Mini, and it’s moved beyond its early issues (chiefly Maps, which you thankfully no longer have to use) to become just as intuitive and polished as previous versions. It’s more of a walled garden, more tightly controlled than Android, but for some that’s preferable. iOS has the better range of available apps too, especially when it comes to those designed specifically for tablets. As we say in our review, the iPad Mini feels more versatile because of the "greater interaction and creativity" afforded by its apps. And <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-7-bold-new-direction-or-flat-fashion-victim/feature">iOS 7</a>, the biggest change in terms of visual design from a version of the OS yet, is just around the corner.</p> <p>The Galaxy Note 8.0 only comes with Android 4.1.2, over which Samsung has slathered its own touches. So really it's lagging behind the Nexus 7, which offers the very latest Android version. However, some of Samsung's apps are impressive, such as Multi-Screen: this multi-tasking feature now supports Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Maps and MX Player as well as Samsung’s own apps.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPad Mini</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="OS – Google Nexus 7 2 Android" alt="OS – Google Nexus 7 2 Android" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-os.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the original Nexus 7 was pretty pathetic in the snapper stakes, the new model has a 5MP camera on the rear and a 1.2MP camera on the front for Google Hangouts. The iPad Mini has the exact same setup, while the Note 8.0 pairs its rear 5MP camera with a 1.3MP front camera. None has a flash.</p> <p>After testing we have to say the iPad Mini nicks it. While all three share a megapixel count, the Note 8.0 and Nexus 7's images come out fairly dull and muted in anything but bright light, while Apple's camera fares slightly – ever so slighty – better; in decent light, it's on a par with the iPhone 4's snapper. It's a close-run thing though.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPad Mini<br /></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Connectivity </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPad Mini is available with just Wi-Fi, or in a “Wi-Fi + Cellular” version that offers on-the-go Internet access at HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA speeds (that’s faster than standard 3G, but not as fast as LTE’s “true” 4G). It holds plenty of appeal for those who want to do more than just read ebooks, watch videos and browse the web – but that doesn’t seem enough to justify the price disparity.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 doesn't really stand out except for battery life and multi-tasking, but there is of course the S-Pen stylus which will appeal to the more productivity-minded. It’s an Android tablet issue.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Yes, the Android Market (nee Google Play) has utterly transformed itself in the last 18 months. Android smartphone users can now look their gloating iPhone counterparts in the eye - thanks to some serious effort on Google’s part in issuing <a href="http://developer.android.com/design/index.html" target="_blank">good app design guidelines</a>, most popular apps are as pretty and useful in Google Play guise as they are in Apple’s App Store. In fact, the best Holo-themed apps are arguably better than their iOS brethren (cue a stream of abuse from the Cupertino faithful).</p> <p class="p1">But in truth, the revolution in Android app design has been limited to smartphones. The Google tablet owner is still left either trawling the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps" target="_blank">Play Store</a> for optimised apps (yes, there’s a dedicated tablet section in the Play Store, but it’s hardly uplifting), or squinting at cut-for-smartphone user interfaces scaled up for tablet rendering.</p> <p class="p1">Take Twitter. The <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twitter.android" target="_blank">official Twitter app</a> is perfectly usable and reasonably attractive on the new Nexus 7. And independent Twitter clients such as <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.levelup.touiteur" target="_blank">Plume</a> run and work well on the 7in screen. But the fact is that the iOS store has a wealth of powerful, tablet-optimised Twitter clients to choose from, while in Play you have a handful. You’ll go on the same frustrating journey if you try and find a truly tablet-ised <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.facebook.katana" target="_blank">Facebook app</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Us? Given the stakes (global domination of advertising and media, no less), we’d form an App Black Ops team that would either bribe the world’s most talented app teams until they converted to the Android tablet cause, or threaten them with sustained violence to their comic book collections until they converted to the Android tablet cause. Either would work.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1200" title="Facebook on Nexus 7. What was ugly and sluggish became glamorous and fast. So you can forgive the Google team entertaining a switch to steady-as-she-goes mode - why make another sudden leap, only to alienate a growing new base of users who were falling in love with your handiwork?</p> <p class="p1">That conservatism would be fine, were it not for the fact that my iPad mini running the beta 5 of iOS 7 is beginning to look awesome. With each update to iOS 7, Jonny Ive’s re-rendering of iOS is making more and more sense. Even the settings screens, which were just plain horrible in the first release, are now tight and attractive. iOS 7 is growing muscle by the day.</p> <p class="p1">Of course, as an owner of a new Nexus 7 running stock Android, you’ll get updates to your toy weeks (or even months) before your Samsung-owning cousins. But I have a hunch that the final release of iOS 7 may just make stock Android look a little bleak. And if you’ve read this far, you’ll know that your new tablet is only a few tweaks from invincibility.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">But if, like so many, you’ve skipped the body of this story and gone straight to the verdict, here are those Nexus tweaks again.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p1">Start by releasing a version costing £20-odd more with a smear-resistant screen, re-positioned buttons, and a case that’s as brilliant as the iPad’s Smart Cover, but isn’t the iPad’s Smart Cover. While you’re at it, have a team kidnap a clique of the world’s best Android app developers and show them the error of their foolish ways.</p> <p class="p1">Oh, and lastly, do make sure that Key Lime Pie is the mobile operating system to end them all, and not another v0.1 nudge forward. There&#39;s long been an issue with Android apps lacking optimisation for tablet screens, and that&#39;s only heightened by the very high resolution of the new Nexus 7. Google really needs to be pushing developers to add greater support for larger, more pixel-tastic screens if it hopes to defeat Apple in the tablet battle.</p> <p>But perhaps before that it needs to optimise the OS itself. At this point homescreen widgets have lots of space surrounding them and look a little &#39;wrong&#39; on the Nexus 7&#39;s screen.</p> <p>One neat introduction with Android 4.3 is user accounts, which makes sharing your tablet far easier. Especially useful for parents is the &#39;child mode&#39;, which can be customised to allow offspring access to only certain features. Don&#39;t want your kids downloading naughty apps or racking up a &pound;100,000 bill for in-app purchases? With the Netflix app getting HD and the Play Store finally beginning to come with a fully stocked film and TV section, the Nexus 7 is an absolute master of movie consumption. Apple&#39;s little tab has endless apps tailored for its screen, and the squatter ratio and extra 0.9in make it more suitable for interaction and creating content.</p> <p>But the Nexus 7 is more about consuming media than creating it, and it does an exceptional job of it. The widescreen ratio combined with a seriously high pixel density and impressive stereo speakers makes for a truly marvellous portable movie experience, and it&#39;s no slouch with music or books, either.</p> <p>On top of that - and despite a price-hike over the previous model - the new Nexus 7 still comes in cheaper than the iPad Mini, yet gives nothing away in terms of styling and build quality.</p> <p>By all means stick to the iPad Mini if you want your little tablet to be versatile enough for music and video editing, but we reckon that most people in the market are more interesting in consuming media than making it, and for that the new Nexus 7 is truly awesome. That&#39;s why it&#39;s jumping the iPad Mini in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tablets/top-ten" target="_blank">Top 10 list of the best tablets in the world right now</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 7 verdict" alt="Nexus 7 verdict" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-main.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>More power, more pixels and just as much style as an iPad Mini, the new Nexus 7 is a portable media marvel</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 7 (2013) review </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Say hi to the world&#039;s new best mini tablet </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Android Google Nexus 7 Tablets Tue, 06 Aug 2013 18:44:33 +0000 Tom Parsons 1425312 at http://www.stuff.tv Gameloft’s Asphalt 8: Airborne is optimised for the Nexus 7 2 http://www.stuff.tv/nexus-7/gameloft-s-asphalt-8-airborne-optimised-new-nexus-7/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> With four times the graphical processing power of its predecessor, the new Nexus 7 could transform tablet gaming </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="gameloft-asphalt-8-airborne-nexus-7" alt="gameloft-asphalt-8-airborne-nexus-7" src="/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/gameloft-asphalt-8-airborne-nexus-7.jpg" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>We were excited to see the new Google Nexus 7 unveiled last night with a trimmer form, higher specs and a better screen. It may look pretty similar at first glance, but is the new Nexus 7 worth buying? And can it live up to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-7/review">its predecessor's</a> award-winning balance of power and value? Parents can use this to control what their offspring can do - for instance, they can stop them from buying in app purchases, or from downloading apps at all - and can even lock the device so only ‘pre-approved’ apps can be used.
