I&rsquo;ve owned an arsenal of Nexus phones and tablets, and couldn&rsquo;t care less that millions of you seem to think that Samsung&rsquo;s TouchWiz is a thing of beauty. All I see is garish colours, cheesy icons and more misalignments than a dress made in the dark. By comparison, stock Android is lean and polished.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/mark-payton" title="View user profile.">Mark Payton</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Then there&rsquo;s the fact that Samsung and HTC insist on cramming their hardware with their own apps and interface tweaks. Some are theoretically useful, assuming you live the life of the ultra-fit, hyperactive fantasy folk who populate television advertising. I&rsquo;ve never used a single one of them; they&rsquo;re the mobile equivalent of the bloatware on an HP laptop, destined to be uninstalled the moment it leaves the box.</p> <p>Lastly, there&rsquo;s the little matter of price. I wavered for all of 30 minutes before putting the cash down on a 16GB black N5 on the day of its launch. That lost half hour was spent deciding between the Nexus, Apple&rsquo;s newly released <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a> and the imminent <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2</a>. But either of the latter two would have meant putting at least &pound;200 more on the counter. At just &pound;299 for the unlocked 16GB N5, the decision&rsquo;s pretty much made for you.</p> <p>But that was then. I&rsquo;ve had the Nexus 5 by my side for five months now, so boredom should be setting in (keep in mind that my smartphone months are in dog years). HTC&rsquo;s new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">One M8 is out</a> and beckoning, while <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung&rsquo;s Galaxy S5</a> will hit the stores in a few weeks. So what I have learned from life with an N5 - and is it time to move on?</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8) review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Vanilla KitKat (left) and TouchWiz: polished vs garish?" alt="Why the Nexus 5 is better than the Galaxy S5 OS" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-002.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design and build: matt, flat, featureless… and perfect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You may think that there&#39;s something slightly wrong with the Nexus 5 straight out of the box. Most handsets have some sort of finish to their shells. Not the N5. It looks as though it was whipped from the production line a little too early: the surfaces are flat matt, in a way that suggests it&rsquo;s missing a final spray on the casing. But then something strange happens. Give it a week, and other handsets begin to look gaudy and greasy, while the Nexus morphs from under-cooked to a design that&rsquo;s sharp, minimalist and tasteful.</p> <p>The transformation may not happen for you, of course. Shortly after the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5c/review">iPhone 5c</a>&rsquo;s launch, I was persuaded to review one in luminescent yellow with a powder-blue case. When I close my eyes, I can still see the damn thing now. I was objective about its performance and features, but every moment with the little Apple was an embarrassment - I flat refused to take it out in public. No surprise, then, that the black, almost featureless N5 is my idea of heaven. The only people who ever comment on it are Android fanboys, most of whom want to prove that their LG G2 is better (which, with that LG UI skin, is a fruitless task).</p> <p>Functionally, the Nexus is as business-like as the design. The power button is on the right-hand edge (HTC: are you watching here? It&rsquo;s the one flaw with the One that you could so easily put right&hellip;). And the volume rocker&rsquo;s on the left - easy to locate, easy to use (how much fuss can there be designing something that only does two jobs?). If you want to plug in headphones, you use the mini jack found on the top left. And if you want to charge it, head for the microUSB on the bottom of the unit. No waterproofing plastic caps, no slide-out keyboards, no funky buttons - the Nexus is as Route One as a phone design can get, and none the worse for it.</p> <p>You will find, though, that while the screen does an admirable job of repelling fingerprints, the slightly rubberised back of the unit is addicted to them. My black N5 does its best to hide the issue, but you&rsquo;re always aware of the smudges.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/10-best-google-nexus-5-apps/feature">The 12 Google Nexus 5 apps you should download first</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The &quot;sharp, minimalist and tasteful&quot; Nexus 5 " alt="Why the Nexus 5 is better than the Galaxy S5 design" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-003.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The back is matt and grippy" alt="The back is matt and grippy" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-back-004.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Everything is where you want it to be" alt="Everything is where you want it to be" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-side-005.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: Moore’s Law no longer applies </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The spec battle between hi-end Android handsets is all good fun, but ultimately misleading. And none are more vocal than Android forums. Owners claim everything from 30 days to 30 seconds for their handset, with countless suggestions for tweaks that&rsquo;ll squeeze another day&rsquo;s life from the device. Oh, and incessant chatter about the update or ROM that&rsquo;ll fix it all.</p> <p>I&rsquo;ve always viewed the exchanges with bemusement: most handsets I&rsquo;ve owned in the last three years have show 25-30 per cent at the end of the day, and since I sleep in a bed with a plug socket nearby (I know - weird, right?), it&rsquo;s just natural to plug the phone in overnight. I&rsquo;ve never owned a phone that lasted two days, or habitually drained its juice to zero in minutes. But then, I replicate the same settings on every Android handset I use - turn off all background sync for every app bar mail and calendar, and turn off GPS (who wanders the streets needing that kind of accuracy anyhow?).</p> <p>And guess what? The Nexus 5, with its sealed 2300 mAh battery, performs precisely like every other handset. Like most of you, I hammer my phone during the day - constant email, browsing and a manual updating of apps (Evernote, Play Newsstand, Twitter etc). By bedtime, it&rsquo;s showing 25 per cent. Regular as clockwork. If I really thrash the N5 (tethering my Toshiba Chromebook to it on a one-hour train journey, for example), I can kill it by 7pm in the evening. But then, what else would I realistically expect?</p> <p>The Nexus runs Android 4.4.2, which brings a simpler interface for controlling location settings (&#39;high accuracy&#39;, &#39;battery saving&#39; and &#39;device only&#39;) and monitoring the apps that are using location to draw on your power. It works well, but - as I pointed out earlier - you&rsquo;re as well served taking 10 minutes to check how many of your favourite apps are set to background sync or push notifications. As I write, the internet&rsquo;s alive with tales of an update from Google to fix alleged Nexus 5 battery drain issues. I&rsquo;m sure that the people experiencing the problem are telling perfectly valid tales, and can&rsquo;t wait for the update to land. Me? I have no idea what they&rsquo;re talking about. Which either infers variability between Nexus 5s in build (ie mine has different components to yours), or rogue apps.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/ultimate-setup-google-nexus-5/feature">The best accessories, cases and headphones for your Google Nexus 5</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The N5&#039;s battery lasts for 1 SSD - that&#039;s Standard Smartphone Day" alt="Why the Nexus 5 is better than the Galaxy S5 battery life" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-battery-006.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Display: not designed for showroom show-offs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I&rsquo;ve used a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-s4/review">Galaxy S4</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review">Note 3</a> in the time I&rsquo;ve owned the Nexus 5. This gives the best of all worlds - any brighter, and you&rsquo;re simply draining battery faster; any lower, and it can be a struggle to make out text and images in sunlight. But the criticism has become more valid in recent months, especially with updates to Google Play Music (and the launch of All Access subscriptions), letting you choose where offline files are stored. </p> <p>Maybe I&rsquo;m unrepresentative of the average smartphone user: my Nexus 5 is a mere 16GB, but I&rsquo;ve only ever used roughly half of the onboard capacity. Don&rsquo;t get me wrong: I use it. But that&rsquo;s mostly as a distraction when on the train or stuck for something else to do. It&rsquo;s an in-between-time service, so not one that I couldn&rsquo;t lose (if it died, a mash-up of your current apps could be used to replace it). I also have a hunch that there are N5 owners wandering the land with no idea that Now is installed on their phone. Fresh from the box, the N5 shows two home screens - you only get the prompt to activate Now if you swipe up or begin a search: it isn&rsquo;t on by default. I couldn&rsquo;t figure Google&rsquo;s logic here on the day I got the Nexus 5, and I still don&#39;t get it now.</p> <p>On the upside, Google Search and its accompanying voice activation have finally learnt British in their most recent updates. Until a few weeks back, you needed to switch your default language to US English before the Nexus would recognise the &lsquo;OK, Google&rsquo; voice command - now, it works with the UK English, and it answers you in a plummy English accent.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review">Android 4.4 KitKat review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Now in full flow" alt="Why the Nexus 5 is better than the Galaxy S5 Google Now" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Google-nexus-5-better-than-galaxy-S5-Google-now-011.jpg?1397223188" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-9"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What The Nexus 6 Needs To Fix </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If Google remains true to form, you&#39;ll see a Nexus 6 in November of 2014 (so honouring the annual upgrade pattern set by the N4 and N5). Keep the processor where it is, and the RAM - just nudge the battery to 3200mAh, and everyone&rsquo;s happy.</p> <p>Of course, much of the Nexus 5&#39;s DNA was inherited from the LG G2, and with the Korean giant expected to build the Nexus 6 too, we&#39;ll get a good idea of what it&#39;ll look like when the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a> arrives sometime in the late summer/early autumn. I&rsquo;m not remotely interested in a Galaxy S5 (blame the plastic, the Band Aid back cover, and that TouchWiz interface, however much they&rsquo;ve refined it). Even the new HTC One (M8) hasn&rsquo;t turned my head (well, OK, maybe a slight flinch - everyone else around here has decided that it&rsquo;s The Second Coming).</p> <p>In fact, the only thing that could tempt me is a larger-screened <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone 6</a> - launch it with iOS7.1 and a 5in+ display, and my credit card would begin to involuntarily twitch. For now, the N5 is ridiculous value for money, and I can&rsquo;t think of a thing it does that irritates me. Both are narrow-bezelled phones with screens around the 5in mark (more on those below) and from the front there&rsquo;s little to tell the difference between them (save the LG logo on the G2 &ndash; the Nexus 5 has an unadorned face).</p> <p>Flip them over and things get a little more interesting. The Google Nexus 5 has a rubbery, matte-finish backside with a stamped &lsquo;Nexus&rsquo; logo, which the LG G2 has a glossy plastic rear with centre-mounted camera and below it, a power/volume control button.</p> <p>The button is a bold design decision from LG &ndash; one that doesn&rsquo;t really pay off, if we&rsquo;re being honest. You&rsquo;ll often find yourself accidentally increasing the volume when trying to turn off the phone and vice versa (luckily you can tap twice on the front to bring up the unlock screen).</p> <p>The Nexus 5 is a little lighter than the G2 (130g versus 143g); both handsets are just under 9mm in depth. As we noted in our Nexus 5 review, it feels a little more pocket-friendly than the G2.</p> <p>Both phones have a useful notification LED on the front, which pulses in different colours depending on the app about which it&rsquo;s notifying you.</p> <p><strong>Winner: The Nexus 5 takes this round for its slight portability edge and handsome backside.</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 rear" alt="LG G2 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-rear.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 rear" alt="Google Nexus 5 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-rear.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen legends </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The LG G2 boasts a glorious 5.2in full HD display with a pixel density of 423ppi, while the Nexus 5 has a 4.95in full HD screen with 445ppi. So there&rsquo;s barely anything between them here: the G2&rsquo;s is slightly larger, yes, but the Nexus 5&rsquo;s is a wee bit sharper.</p> <p>There are some subtle differences it&rsquo;s worth noting, however. The Nexus 5&rsquo;s screen is a little cooler than the G2&rsquo;s, and some might even call it &ldquo;washed out&rdquo; at times. The G2 sports one of the richest, brightest and most vivid screens around at the moment, and offers great viewing angles too (better than the Nexus 5&rsquo;s), so we&rsquo;re going to give this round to LG&rsquo;s phone rather than Google&rsquo;s. Both have 2GB of RAM and a choice of 16GB and 32GB models when it comes to built-in storage. Both have NFC and Bluetooth 4.0 (although only the G2 supports Low Energy). The G2 also comes with an IR blaster that, in tandem with an app, allows it to act as a remote control for pretty much any device.</p> <p>Both, when you boil it down, are hugely capable and hugely powerful phones. There might theoretically be faster hardware out there, but in real world terms neither of these devices will struggle cope with any app you might care throw at them.</p> <p>One area where the G2 moves ahead is battery life, however. Its 3,000mAh battery is a stonker: we managed to get a good 19 hours of normal use out of the phone before it dropped to five percent battery and we reached for the charger. The Nexus 5 has a 2,300mAh battery and, while it fares a little better than its fast-depleted predecessor the Nexus 4, it doesn&rsquo;t come close to touching the G2 (or Samsung Galaxy S4, for that matter) when it comes to longevity.</p> <p>We should also mention music playback, because while the Nexus 5 is as good as pretty much any other phone out there, the G2 has an ace up its sleeve: support for 24-bit/192kHz Hi-Res Audio files. Whack in a pair of decent headphones and you can listen to studio master quality tunes.</p> <p><strong>Winner: The LG G2 for its battery and handful of additional features</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/music/why-it-s-time-get-pumped-about-hi-res-audio/feature">Why you should be pumped about (and just a bit sceptical of) Hi-Res Audio</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 hi-res audio" alt="LG G2 hi-res audio" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-hi-res-audio.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd">

The stabilisation helps immensely in dim, murky conditions &ndash; an area where phone cameras are traditionally at their worst &ndash; allowing you to capture sharper shots at night and indoors, even with the flash turned off. Colour reproduction is impressive too.</p> <p>The Google Nexus 5 has an 8MP main camera that also comes with optical image stabilisation. It&rsquo;s a massive improvement over the disappointing Nexus 4 camera and provides lovely, sharp detail in low light (our review points out that it even compares favourably to the G2 in this regard). A recent software update gave it a speedy new autofocus and boosted the vibrancy and contrast of photos, but we do feel the G2&rsquo;s camera is better at accurately representing real-life colours.</p> <p>On the video front, the G2 captures 1080p at a smooth 60fps while the Nexus 5 is limited to 30fps. Other than that both do a respectable job. We don&rsquo;t put too much importance on a smartphone&rsquo;s front-facing camera, but the G2&rsquo;s 2.1MP sensor has a slight edge over the Nexus 5&rsquo;s 1.3MP example.</p> <p><strong>Winner: We have to give this round to LG, although it&rsquo;s tighter than you might imagine</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera_3.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android vs Android </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 5 sports Android 4.4.1 KitKat, the clean &ldquo;stock&rdquo; version of Android beloved by purists. It&rsquo;s a bit cartoonish and over-egged (the transitions are particularly OTT) and aesthetes will definitely prefer the Nexus 5&rsquo;s less-is-more approach, but there are some nice touches here: eye-tracking pauses videos when you look away; the Clip Tray feature stores everything you&rsquo;ve cut or copied in the past; and Guest Mode means you can hand off the phone to anyone without having to worry about them making in-app purchases or opening any apps you&rsquo;ve restricted.</p> <p><strong>Winner: Close again, but we&rsquo;re going to give this one to the Nexus 5</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Now on Nexus 5" alt="Google Now on Nexus 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-google-now_3.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="LG G2 UI" alt="LG G2 UI" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-g2-ui.JPG?1392389126" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Price – not so close </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Without putting too fine a point on it, the Google Nexus 5 is an absolute bargain. What&rsquo;s clear here is that Google isn&rsquo;t too bothered about making a profit from its hardware: it just wants to get people using Android and by extension Google services (through which the company makes all its money). And that&rsquo;s great if you&rsquo;re looking to by an Android phone anyway.</p> <p>The LG G2 is &pound;470 SIM free. Saying &quot;Ok Google Now&quot; fires up Google Now, which you can then use to search your device, the web, open apps and much more, all without having to lift a single finger to touch the screen. Impressive stuff.</p> <p>The Moto X also features Active Notifications which automatically flash up on your screen after it cleverly works out you&#39;re looking at it. Sliding it out for your pocket or giving it a nudge on a table will automatically show you your notifications for example, but there&#39;s more to it than that.</p> <p>Tapping on a notification will show you more details about it, like the subject line and sender of an email and it&#39;s a lot handier than guessing whether or not a flashing LED is a text from your mum or if it&#39;s just another Nigerian Prince asking for your bank account details.</p> <p>The Nexus 5&#39;s stock Android 4.4 KitKat OS is of course fantastic in its own right, and we like the fact that it has Google Now as one if its home screens, just one finger-flick away.</p> <p>The Nexus 5 will also be one of the first devices to get Google&#39;s OS updates, which is something for impatient Android fanatics to consider.</p> <p>Still, for the genuinely useful additions that the Moto X brings to the table (without messing around with the clean stock Android look too much), we&#39;re giving this to the Moto X.</p> <p><em>Winner:&nbsp;</em><strong>Moto X</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: Android OS" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: Android OS" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-and-nexus-4_0.jpg?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Oh snap </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Neither the Nexus 5 or Moto X takes photos that will blow you away (look to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020</a> if you want really impressive smartphone snaps), but they both take decent shots all the same.</p> <p>The Moto X has a 10MP camera, but those extra megapixels don&#39;t offer much improvement when comparing shots taken with the Nexus 5&#39;s 8MP offering. If anything, the Nexus 5 produces more details even in well-lit conditions.</p> <p>You can however fire up the Moto X&#39;s camera in seconds - all it takes is a quick double-flick of your wrist - which is a handy way to take spontaneous shots regardless of what app you&#39;re in.&nbsp;</p> <p>Its camera app is also easy to use, and you can drag your finger to manually select your focus and metering point.</p> <p>The Nexus 5 is better in low-light conditions as well though, thanks to its built-in optical image stabilisation (OIS), and its frustrating auto-focus problems have thankfully been sorted with an update.</p> <p>While neither phone excels in the camera department, the Nexus 5 wins this round, thanks to its OIS smarts and more detailed shots.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>Nexus 5</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/moto-x-camera-app_0.jpg?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" alt="Google Nexus 5 vs Motorola Moto X: camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera%20%281%29.JPG?1391007993" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> X &#039;gon give it to ya </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Moto X serves up some of the best battery life we&#39;ve seen from a modern smartphone to date, and lasts a day with heavy use. Impressive &ndash; and it manages to make the One&rsquo;s facade look downright cluttered by comparison.</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-5/gallery?viewid=105168" target="_blank">CHECK OUT OUR FULL NEXUS 5 GALLERY HERE</a>&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s light compared to heftier rivals such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a>, too, at just 130g, which is just a smidge heavier than last year&rsquo;s Nexus 4. With absolutely no flex to it, it&#39;s one sturdy LG build, and the black model is good at warding off wear and tear.</p> <p>(Cases might not be necessary, but the 5 will work with LG&rsquo;s QuickView range. Also look out for wireless charging accessories since the tech is built-in.)</p> <p>If you&rsquo;ve got a <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-nexus-7-2013/review" target="_blank">Nexus 7</a> you&rsquo;ll feel right at home with the matte black or white polycarbonate back, down to the embossed Nexus logo. The only main differences between the designs are the curved top and bottom edges on the Nexus 5, and the handset&rsquo;s protruding camera lens, with LED flash below, providing either a shot of character or disappointing protrusion depending on your personal preference.</p> <p>Overall it&rsquo;s an understated design with neat and tidy speaker grilles either side of the microUSB port on the bottom, subtle (but strangely sharp) power and volume buttons flanking the screen and a microSIM tray that you&rsquo;ll need the tool in the box to open. When we&rsquo;re not accidentally covering up the single speaker (the other&rsquo;s the mic), sound is nice and punchy.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&rsquo;s slightly slimmer, more pocketable and easier to grab for the small-handed than the G2 &ndash; which might sway legions towards the Nexus &ndash; although where the polycarbonate meets the front glass on each side could be smoother (see the HTC One). And when the Nexus is tapped or shaken, the camera lens makes a quiet rattle. A small point but it could get annoying.&nbsp;</p> <p>Still, we can say that with the Nexus 5 Google has finally discovered cool.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/moto-g/best-cheap-smartphone-you-can-buy/feature">Group test - the best cheap smartphones you can buy&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2915880808001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2915880808001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. Bigger and higher-res than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/google-nexus-4/review" target="_blank">Nexus 4&rsquo;s</a> 720p effort, the Nexus 5&rsquo;s 4.95in, 1080p, 445ppi screen is up there with the best we&rsquo;ve seen all year.&nbsp;</p> <p>Everything from text in Play Books to Android games looks wonderfully crisp and clean. Colours in HD movies such as <em>Pacific Rim</em> are natural, with a slightly cooler colour palette than both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review" target="_blank">LG G2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc-one/review" target="_blank">HTC One</a>. If we&rsquo;re being picky the Nexus can look a tad washed out, but in both downloads and streamed movies, there&rsquo;s smooth motion and sumptuous detail.</p> <p>Web pages are less well served, and can look creamy next to the best out there. Unless you&rsquo;re comparing side by side you&rsquo;re unlikely to complain, but it does mean everything looks that bit more dynamic on the likes of the HTC and LG.</p> <p>Similarly, viewing angles are good, but not the best - contrast and colours fade when you tilt the Nexus horizontally from side to side. We know the majority of the time you&rsquo;ll be using the Nexus straight on but it&rsquo;s a shame when quickly showing YouTube vids to friends.&nbsp;</p> <p>On the other hand, we think 4.95in is a great size, making the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone&rsquo;s</a> screen look positively puny. The Nexus does stick with onscreen Android control buttons, and we&rsquo;d prefer some stylish capacitive buttons (there&rsquo;s certainly room below the screen), but the dock at the bottom of the screen is now translucent so you can at least see what&rsquo;s going on underneath.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-screen.JPG?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance - Nexus Hold’em </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The combination of the processor <em>du jour</em>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/qualcomms-new-snapdragon-800-chip-brings-4k-video-smartphones/news" target="_blank">Qualcomm&rsquo;s beastly Snapdragon 800</a> clocked at 2.26GHz, together with 2GB of RAM, Adreno 330 graphics and improvements to the touchscreen responsiveness of the Nexus makes this hands-down the smoothest Android experience we&rsquo;ve ever encountered.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s right, ever.&nbsp;</p> <p>Gaming is a blast on the Nexus 5, and with KitKat re-engineered for speed, everything from multi-tasking to web browsing is noticeably faster. Take search, for instance: it opens instantly so that Google results are always one second away &ndash; reassuring.&nbsp;</p> <p>We haven&rsquo;t experienced a single crash or even so much as a hiccup when testing the Nexus 5, although it can heat up after a session with the 8MP camera or during a big game download. Until KitKat arrives on other handsets, it&rsquo;s hard to say what&rsquo;s down to hardware and what&rsquo;s down to software, but all of the lag when scrolling around menus and the like on the Nexus 4 is gone.</p> <p>With the Snapdragon 800 making star turns in the LG G2 and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Note 3</a>, we thought we&rsquo;d roll up our sleeves and do some benchmarking on the Nexus 5. On <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antutu.ABenchMark&amp;hl=en_GB" target="_blank">AnTuTu</a>, the Nexus 5 scored a well-deserved 26010 &ndash; short of the G2&rsquo;s champion score of 34191 but still mighty respectable. Over on <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.primatelabs.geekbench3&amp;hl=en" target="_blank">Geekbench 3</a> it racked up a score of 2767, which bests both LG&rsquo;s flagship and the HTC One.</p> <p>Connectivity now includes 4G (notably absent from last year&rsquo;s Nexus 4) plus NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and seriously fast dual-band Wi-Fi (downloads fly, streaming is impeccable). The microUSB port is also Slimport-enabled, which just means you don&rsquo;t need to buy a separate HDMI cable to hook the Nexus up to your telly.&nbsp;</p> <p>In fact the only letdown is the lack of expandable storage. It&rsquo;s better than the meagre 8GB and 16GB options of the Nexus 4, but the new Nexus is still only available in 16GB and 32GB flavours, and you&rsquo;re very likely to hit 32GB in the first six months if you&rsquo;re using this media-muncher as you should. It&rsquo;s a shame, and while we applaud Google for only charging a &pound;40 for the 32GB version, a microSD slot would have been a better bet.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-performance_3.JPG?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 5 Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Operating system:</strong> Android 4.4 (KitKat)&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong>: 2.2.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong>: 2GB&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 4.95in IPS 1920x1080 display (445ppi)&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Camera:</strong>&nbsp;8MP rear, 1.3MP front&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Storage:</strong> 16GB/32GB (non expandable)&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Battery</strong>: 2300 mAh&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Dimensions:</strong> 69.17 x 137.84 x 8.59mm</p> <p><strong>Weight:</strong> 130g</p> <p><strong>Wireless connectivity:</strong> Dual-band WiFi (2.4G/5G), 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac; NFC (Android Beam); Bluetooth 4.0; wireless charging</p> <p><strong>Sensors:</strong> GPS; gyroscope; accelerometer; compass; proximity/ambient light&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: could do (and might become) better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>So KitKat ushers in a new dawn of voice search and Now cards &ndash; but what about the things we already do with our smartphones, such as snapping that police horse that looks weirdly like our flatmate&hellip; for example?</p> <p>Google knew it had work to do after the Nexus 4&rsquo;s cam got a lukewarm reaction, and the Nexus 5 boasts a big boost in both software and hardware, so you now get an 8MP rear snapper with Optical Image Stabilisation, a new HDR+ mode and a 1.3MP snapper on the front, plus Auto Backup to Google Plus and Auto Awesome for animations, panoramas and photo booth shots.&nbsp;</p> <p>We really wanted a blinding camera on this Nexus, but results fall just short, with some muted colours and trouble exposing correctly. Indoors, outdoors - we continually got slightly disappointing shots even when tweaking exposure in the fan-shaped pop-up settings menu.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s not to say images are bad, but next to the best shooters the lack of contrast and problems dealing with tricky light become more apparent. Still, detail is impressive (even next to the 13MP G2) when zooming in on subjects in the distance, and if you have time to set up a shot, HDR+ is useful outdoors. Auto-focus is fast enough and night shots are better than those of any other smartphone at this price.&nbsp;</p> <p>Full HD video is detailed and has smooth motion but again, rivals do a better job of exposing and colours aren&rsquo;t always 100% accurate. If you were crossing fingers for a top smartphone cam on the Nexus you&#39;ll be disappointed, but keep an eye out for updates: Google says software tweaks in the coming weeks will improve picture quality.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera.JPG?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera-2.JPG?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE: Android 4.4.1 Camera Update means faster focus, pumped up colours </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Nexus 5 launches, reviewers grumble about the camera, five weeks later Google rolls out a new version of KitKat (4.4.1) to &#39;fix&#39; its camera. That is how you update a smartphone, kids. Yes, yes, we know 4.4.2 has also now landed but that&#39;s a bug fix update. So we&#39;ll be concentrating on whether Google has done enough to elevate the Nexus&#39; camera to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5s</a> levels of brilliance. So ... has it?&nbsp;</p> <p>Quick answer? Not really. The big advantage is focussing which is now one whole second faster for both AF and tap to focus - that makes a big ol&#39; difference when you&#39;re trying to capture your boss doing his best jazz hands. It&#39;s also more accurate, we consistently get slightly out-of-focus shots with the pre-update Nexus while the unit running 4.4.1 nails it everytime.&nbsp;</p> <p>Contrast levels have been ratcheted up and for the most part this is a big plus, making everything look crisper and helping to negate that &#39;washed-out&#39; quality that&#39;s irked some Nexus snappers. Some detail can be lost as a result, as on the Pretzel packets image above, it&#39;s not much though if you&#39;ll be working with the images blown up it&#39;s obvious side by side.</p> <p>Colours too, particularly reds, are more vibrant and this is why most Nexus 5 users will be happy when the update comes through - on the smartphone&#39;s screen images definitely pop more. So what&#39;s the trouble? They&#39;re not always as accurate as the likes of the LG G2 and iPhone.</p> <p>Instagrammers and the like won&#39;t worry too much about photos correctly representing reality but we&#39;d pick a little more muted and accurate everytime i.e. somewhere in between the old Nexus 5 images and the new ones. We know, we&#39;re hard to please.&nbsp; For colours and contrast, the LG G2 gets it spot on everytime as demonstrated below by our motor porn.</p> <p>Elsewhere, the Auto White Balance now does a fine job indoors and out and the Nexus 5 does a much better job at correctly exposing for the light, for instance when shooting 1080p video. Low light performance is very close between the pre-update and post but the Nexus does do a decent job of brightening up gloomy rooms indoors, as on the Tetris lamp image. One niggle here is that the Night scene mode forces Auto Flash and blurs the option to turn it off but we got some good results with the flash on. Overall it&#39;s without doubt an improvement but it doesn&#39;t go far enough to catch up to the best smartphone cameras - to be honest we didn&#39;t expect it to without some sort of imaging voodoo.&nbsp;</p> <p>But let&#39;s face it, if you own a Nexus 5, you&#39;re not going to shun a KitKat update. This is the phone with the best Google software on earth, voice controlled and constantly updating and those .1 updates will keep coming, as will refreshes to Google apps like the Chrome browser and Drive. Just don&#39;t be surprised when everything looks slightly rosier on your Nexus than it does out the window.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pre-update Nexus on the left, post on the right - Vivid reds but a small loss of detail " alt="Pre-update Nexus on the left, post on the right - Vivid reds but a small loss of" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nexus-5-review-camera-comparison-pretzels.png?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 5 running 4.4.1 on the left, LG G2 on the right " alt="Nexus 5 running 4.4.1 on the left, LG G2 on the right " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nexus-5-review-camera-comparison-car-versus-LG.png?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The post update Nexus 5 picks out lots of detail and colour in gloomy rooms, brightening up indoor shots " alt="The post update Nexus 5 picks out lots of detail and colour in gloomy rooms, bri" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nexus-5-review-camera-indoors-low-light.png?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Pre-update Nexus 5 on the left looks more accurate than the bark in post-update Nexus on the right" alt="Pre-update Nexus 5 on the left looks more accurate than the bark in post-update " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nexus-5-review-camera-comparison-bark.png?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android 4.4 KitKat - This is it </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With Google Now and search front and centre, Android 4.4 means a whole new kind of business. More than just a lick of polish and a sprinkling of new features, KitKat really will change the way you use your phone.&nbsp;</p> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Read about our first week with KitKat here in our in-depth review of the mobile OS here.</a></p> <p>This latest Android version has, Six Million Dollar Man-style, been taken apart and put together again to be faster and sleeker. It&rsquo;s not the obvious <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/node/1426771" target="_blank">visual overhaul Apple went for with iOS 7</a>, and the changes are subtle - menus are white where they used to be dark, for example - but they do make a difference.&nbsp;</p> <p>Icons are bigger in the app drawer and some, such as the camera app, have been redesigned beautifully. The navigation buttons now have a translucent bar and in some apps, such as Play Books, the buttons and status bar disappear when you begin reading in Google&rsquo;s &lsquo;immersive mode&rsquo;. Gallery now supports other cloud services, not just Drive, so all your photos are in one place, and when watching movies on a Chromecast the Nexus displays fullscreen artwork on the lockscreen with play, pause and seek controls. Images can be a bit low-res if they&rsquo;re just pulled in from Netflix, but it&rsquo;s a very handy touch.&nbsp;</p> <p>The oft-forgotten People app has nifty tricks - contacts are auto-sorted by who you frequently talk to and the dialler now includes search so that you can type in &lsquo;taxi&rsquo; and it will pull up local results. It works like a charm and using Google Maps&rsquo; business info also operates backwards, so if you get a call from an unknown number that&rsquo;s listed on Google it will pull in the info so you know who is calling. Simple genius.&nbsp;</p> <p>On the Nexus 5, Hangouts becomes your default messaging app with SMS support. But unlike iMessage, text convos and Hangouts chats stay separate and Google contacts are prioritised. And if, like us, you&rsquo;re running three Google accounts you can get contacts in a tangle. It&rsquo;s best to choose one Google account then start importing contacts from your SIM or elsewhere then you only have to move between accounts in Hangouts for Google-based chat.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-hangouts-2.jpg?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-chromecast-lockscreen.JPG?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Now and Search - Outsource Brain </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It really is all about Google Now and search, though. With a new home to the left of your main homescreen, you&rsquo;ll spend more time checking Google&rsquo;s mind-reading selection of location, search and weather based cards than ever (not just the Google Doodles). It can now suggest web pages, too - and you can still access it by swiping up from the bottom of the screen when in apps, as before.&nbsp;</p> <p>Search is everywhere in KitKat, including the dialler, with a search bar at the top of every homescreen - yes, even on the Google Now screen. With the big G&rsquo;s search engine advantage, and Maps&rsquo; business and travel info on its way, Siri really is a goner.&nbsp;</p> <p>That&rsquo;s because Google&rsquo;s Voice controls have also really come on in capability. Switch to US English in Google Now&rsquo;s settings and then you&rsquo;re good to go with the OK Google command. When you&rsquo;re on homescreens (this is Nexus 5 only) or Google Now say &ldquo;OK Google&rdquo;, a la Glass, to voice search, open apps or find contacts. Most of it is faster than ever, although opening apps takes longer than it should, and we reckon it could make chatting to our phones a reality - finally. You might not do it on the street just yet but we&rsquo;re sure you&rsquo;ll come around to it.&nbsp;</p> <p>And there&rsquo;s more: it&rsquo;s not live yet but Google has app partners on board, including IMDB and OpenTable, to start integrating the information in apps into KitKat&rsquo;s Google Search. This means that not only will we use Google to access info from the web but also navigate to what we need from apps.&nbsp;</p> <p>Everything will be one voice command or typed search away - from directions to a gig venue to the recipe for the dinner we forgot we were supposed to be making. And nightly charges are a small hit when you take the SIM-only price into account.&nbsp;</p> <p>The bad news? In our video rundown test the Nexus 5 dropped by a whopping 50% during one two-and-a-half-hour HD movie with brightness at half and Wi-Fi switched on. During the same period, the G2 dropped a much friendlier 23% on the same settings. While no device bearing the Nexus name has misstepped, with the frenzy around the 5 it&rsquo;s impressive to say that it lives up to the hype.&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no question that for anyone looking to buy a handset outright, this is the best &pound;300-&pound;350 you can spend. Google is making it possible for more people to buy great handsets SIM-free, escaping from the clutches of sky-high 24 month contracts. And while it may not have the resale value of an iPhone, in a year&rsquo;s time we doubt you&rsquo;ll want to sell. Nexus handsets are first to be updated, after all.</p> <p>But the best of Google doesn&rsquo;t make the best smartphone and as super-specced, good value and cool as the Nexus 5 now is, top smartphones such as the LG G2 take better care of the basics that really matter.&nbsp;</p> <p>So Google&rsquo;s still one killer camera and beefy battery away from total domination in smartphone hardware, but even now the Nexus 5 remains a cracking conduit to Google&rsquo;s vision of the web, and it goes straight to number 3 in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten" target="_blank">list of the best smartphones in the world</a> as a result.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Google Nexus 5 review" alt="Google Nexus 5 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-verdict-2.jpg?1408531565" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The future of Google in a gorgeous package makes this by far the best phone on a budget</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Google Nexus 5 review: &quot;Close to the perfect Android phone&quot; According to Stuff reviewer Sophie Charara, "Google has finally discovered cool".</p> <p>Having said that, there's no getting around metal. The iPhone 5s will feel like a more premium device in your hands, thanks to its aluminium build, and its new crystal sapphire Touch ID Home button, encircled by stainless steel, oozes quality.</p> <p>If you’re not tired of the iPhone 5s’ design, then its metal construction pips the Nexus 5 to the build quality post.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em> <strong>iPhone 5s</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" alt="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC01893_2.JPG?1384314847" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="940" height="705" title="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" alt="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-main-2.jpg?1384274569" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="567" height="425" title="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" alt="Apple iPhone 5s vs Google Nexus 5" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-review-camera_0.JPG?1384274569" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 5 boasts a 4.95in full HD display, with a 1920 x 1080 resolution. The iPhone 5s runs iOS 7 without a judder or hiccup in sight.</p> <p>Numbers aren't everything however, and the Nexus 5 more than proves it by treating us to the fastest, smoothest, slickest Android experience we've ever seen, ploughing through the latest 3D games and multitasking apps like an eight-handed juggler.</p> <p>Yes the Nexus 5 has 2GB of RAM in comparison to the iPhone 5s' 1GB. The result is a smartphone camera which produces some of the best shots&nbsp;around.</p> <p>The Nexus 5's 8MP camera boasts optical image stabilisation, which has proven itself in both the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nokia-lumia-1020/review" target="_blank">Nokia Lumia 1020</a> and LG G2 by producing clear shots with sharp details, even in low light conditions, and it's a feature that's lacking from its iPhone 5s rival.</p> <p>But sadly, the Nexus 5's camera gets a "room for improvement" stamp on its report card. With a full HD 1920 x 1080 display and a 4.95in screen, it’s a really impressive bit of kit.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/mark-prigg" title="View user profile.">Mark Prigg</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> First bite of KitKat </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Nexus 5 is our first look at KitKat, and it’s a great improvement - not a radical overhaul, but a real spit and polish that makes everything seems faster and easier than before.</p> <p>It’s significantly more responsive, and Google's integration of Search and Google Now is, unsurprisingly, brilliant - with the search bar appearing instantly when you tap on it, and voice search also getting an overhaul - if the phone is on, you can simply say "OK Google" to trigger a search.</p> <p>Google Now has also been improved, with new cards and a new way to access it: simply by swiping left from the homescreen.&nbsp;</p> <p>Voice recognition is also much improved, and seems a lot more reliable than in previous versions.</p> <p>There's also some deeper integration - you can ask the handset to call Michelle, for example, and it'll ask you which Michelle in your phonebook you want, showing you their contact info.</p> <p>The improved Hangouts app is also worth a mention - having SMS messages integrated into it makes a lot of sense, and works very well.</p> <p>Google has also included support for third party cloud apps for the first time, so looking at your gallery will show you not only what's on your Google Drive, but also what's in your Box drive - although funnily enough, there was no mention of iCloud suport any time soon.</p> <p>Overall, KitKat is extremely responsive, and Google claimed it has tuned all of its key apps to be faster now, and there's a noticaeble difference compared to the Nexus 4.</p> <p>There’s also a range of new accessories, including some new induction chargers, and a range of eye-wateringly bright cases.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 5 hands on: Play Store" alt="Nexus 5 hands on: Play Store" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-play-store.jpg?1383285989" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 5 hands on" alt="Nexus 5 hands on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-5-hands-on.jpg?1383285989" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Android KitKat – new features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Translucent menus</p> <p>New dialler -
