We love listening to music, love going to gigs and love a bit of karaoke after a few too many beers. But can we actually play anything musical? Well no, not unless you count <em>Guitar Hero</em>.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/mark-wilson" title="View user profile.">Mark Wilson</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Build it: Korg MS-20 Kit </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>■&nbsp; Put back your saucepan drumkit and homemade maracas, because this is a serious DIY musical instrument. Even the packaging and manual are the same as they were back then.</p> <p>■&nbsp; Early MS-20s were known for their distinctive distortion, while later ones had a different filter that mellowed the sound. With only half the strings of a normal guitar it&rsquo;s supposed to make picking up the basics approximately half as difficult.</p> <p><strong>2. The strings are tuned to the same notes as the first three on a six-string: G, B and E. That means you can use normal tablature to learn chords, and what you pick up can still be applied when you make the step up.</p> <p><strong>3. Here comes the hard part</strong><br />The Loog has <em>Guitar Hero</em>-style coloured blobs on the neck to help position your fingers, plus there are seven video lessons available on the company&rsquo;s website that take in the basic principles of playing it, stringing it and tuning it. Not bad for a computer game.</p> <p><strong>2. Got a spare 60 hours?</strong><br /><em>Rocksmith</em> breaks down songs and separates out parts to make them easier to play. Like <em>Guitar Hero</em>, it knows when you hit the right note in time, so as you get better it throws tougher sequences at you. Ubisoft reckons it&rsquo;ll take you from total n00b to bonafide guitarist in just two months, provided you put in a decent hour a day.</p> <p><strong>3. Just because you can buzz your way through <em>Blitzkrieg Bop</em> doesn&rsquo;t mean you can pull off hammer-ons, pinch harmonics and two-hand tapping. Those will take a bit more practice.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/music/30-greatest-audiophile-albums/feature" target="_blank">30 essential albums for audiophiles</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1080" title="Rocksmith is trying to put every guitar teacher out of business" alt="Geeky music projects to try at home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/RS2014NG_screen_LosingMyReligion_ChordGameplay_140923_6pmCET_1411488444.png?1422698581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Project #3 (hard): Make Music With Kinect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>1. Bananas are a simpler, more robust connector than the popular mini-jack, and more often found on scientific test equipment. I quickly found that I preferred the gear I built myself to anything available, and now perform almost entirely on homemade kit.</p> <p>I started by trying to sort through the&nbsp;piles of information that have accumulated on the internet. It can be a steep learning curve, and it can be quite intimidating seeing what others have done. Rather than waste too much time, I started with a very limited set of tools, a decent soldering station being key. Time proved that you can do almost anything with a concise setup.</p> <p>I found very early on that, once I had determined the ergonomic layout of a module, I had no need for verbal references on the panel. As a result, all of my work has no labelling of any kind. I find it much easier to use the instruments without labels. While modular synths might resemble control panels in a nuclear power plant, I don&rsquo;t think they should be approached that way. No other musical instrument is littered with these indicators.</p> <p>The most extreme synth I&rsquo;ve made is a 24-band vocoder. A kind fellow in Russia reverse-engineered a 1980s Soviet Bloc design for modern components and offered circuit boards for the project. Otherwise, I primarily make synths for people I know from the underground, experimental US music community.</p> <p>For an absolute beginner, I&rsquo;d suggest looking at Ray Wilson&rsquo;s Music From Outer Space (MFOS) site. He offers a wide range of circuit designs and probably the best documentation available. It&rsquo;s the closest thing to having someone holding your virtual hand as you go wading into what can be murky waters.&quot;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/music/beta-yourself-hi-fi/feature" target="_blank">Beta Yourself: Hi-Fi</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Matthew Regula and his modular synth" alt="Geeky music projects to try at home" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/GREEN-SYNTH_1_0.jpg?1422698581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Playlist: Music-making apps 1-4 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Auxy: Beat Studio</strong><br />If you&rsquo;re partial to a bit of Kraftwerk, this is the app for you. Grundig boombox has finally packed in and it&#39;s time to build a new hi-fi system. But where to start?</p> <p>Luckily for us<em>,What Hi-Fi? </em>editor Simon Lucas sits only a few desks away from the Stuff district, and we managed to get him to share his pearls of audiophile wisdom:</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/simon-lucas" title="View user profile.">Simon Lucas</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The basics </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Start at source. </strong>Where is the music for your hi-fi coming from? Your huge collection of CDs? Those vinyl LPs that are finally coming back into fashion? The files on your computer and phone? Or a streaming service?</p> <p><strong>Choose your style.</strong> Is this hi-fi system confined to one room? Or do you want music to follow you wherever you go? Multi-room audio is booming, but it&#39;s not automatically your first choice where sound quality&#39;s concerned.</p> <p><strong>Set a budget. </strong>No matter if your idea of &#39;hi-fi&#39; is a single mains-powered speaker with a Bluetooth connection to your phone, or a whole rack&#39;s worth of amplifier, CD player, turntable, streamer, network-attached storage and a pair of speakers - stick to your budget.</p> <p><strong>Prioritise. </strong>Be honest: do you want your money to buy the best sound possible, or do you want it to buy as much futuristic gadgetry as it can? The best kit isn&#39;t necessarily the coolest.</p> <p><strong>Plan ahead. </strong>It&#39;s like a job interview: where do you see yourself in five years&#39; time? If you imagine your system expanding into more rooms, say, or incorporating some home cinema action, you need to factor it in now.</p> <p><strong>Audition. </strong>A hi-fi store is a rare sight these days, but there&#39;s no substitute for hearing the products on your shortlist before you commit the cash. And it&#39;s ultimately less of a pain than having to keep sending things back to Amazon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cambridge-audio-minx-xi/review" target="_blank">Cambridge Audio Minx Xi review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Beta Yourself: How to build a Hi-Fi system from scratch" alt="Beta Yourself: How to build a Hi-Fi system from scratch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Beta-Yourself---Hifi-Turntable.jpg?1421856784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Beta Yourself: How to build a Hi-Fi system from scratch" alt="Beta Yourself: How to build a Hi-Fi system from scratch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Beta-Yourself---Hifi-CDs.jpg?1421856784" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> System matching </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Check compatibility. </strong>If you have a record player, you&#39;ll need an amp with a phono stage. Only 35 units of the System 35 are available at US$22,000 (nearly &pound;15,000) apiece, while the Model 15 gets a larger run of 150 units at US$10,000 (about &pound;6,600) a pop.</p> <p>Check out the short film above, which features musicians and Moog fanatics new and old showing their abilities and the range of these memorable modular synthesisers.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.moogmusic.com/news/return-moog-modular">Moog</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/19/moog-large-format-modular-synthesizers/">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/100-best-gadgets-ever-tv-age/feature">100 Best Gadgets Ever: The TV Age</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3w6qWiEx8BQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Another Sid Meier game out soon </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Just a couple months after the launch of <em>Civilization: Beyond Earth</em>, another Sid Meier-branded sci-fi game is on the horizon - and it&rsquo;s due out this spring. <em>Sid Meier&rsquo;s Starships</em> is a new turn-based strategy game based on the same universe as <em>Beyond Earth</em>, but it features a different focus for this PC, Mac, and iPad release.</p> <p>Meier himself tells Eurogamer that you&rsquo;ll take the lead role in a federation of planets, building your own starships and completing missions in various star systems. In gaming, there&rsquo;s even talk we&rsquo;ll one day see two out of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo slain, the champion standing atop its rivals&rsquo; corpses, bloodied controller in hand, while fans of the fallen forever echo Private Hudson in <em>Aliens</em>, quietly chanting: &ldquo;Game over, man! Game over!&rdquo;</p> <p>Such certainty even pervades music. Assuming you&rsquo;re not a scoundrel pirate, the argument is that everyone in the future will simply pay a monthly subscription to an all-you-can-eat streaming service, in return receiving access to more songs and albums than anyone could possibly hope to force into their ears in a lifetime. Any suggestion an alternative might be a good idea will have you branded a colossal idiot.</p> <p>Bandcamp chief executive Ethan Diamond must be King Idiot, then, because his company is trying another way: single-artist subscriptions. <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/nov/11/bandcamp-musicians-subscription-services">Joking to The Guardian</a>&nbsp;that it&rsquo;s &quot;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-s-free-u2-album-exercise-tone-deaf-music-spam/feature">kinda like what U2 and Apple did</a>, except that it&rsquo;s music that you actually want&rdquo;, he outlined his system. Punters will be able to subscribe to an artist&rsquo;s output, and then gain access to whatever they include in the subscription, which can range from new works to an entire back catalogue.</p> <p>Predictably, many people assumed Diamond had lost his mind from listening to too much loud music, which had turned his brains to mush. What kind of fool would splash out anything from &pound;20 to US$200 annually for a single artist&rsquo;s music, when the high end of that price range would get you the literally millions of songs on Spotify, and still leave enough cash left over for an extra large bag of jelly babies?</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Spotify isn&#039;t the only way </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But what those tiresome responses showcase is a complete lack of understanding about the nature of how fans operate, along with a stubborn unwillingness to recognise that different business models can happily coexist. To my mind, Bandcamp&rsquo;s idea isn&rsquo;t crazy - it&rsquo;s fantastic and necessary. I already buy as much new music as I can on Bandcamp, on the basis that my money is often going directly to the artists. It&rsquo;s a far cry from throwing cash into the Spotify pit, the proceeds from which are largely divided up on the basis of popularity, leaving heroically battling smaller indies with pennies.</p> <p>The way I see it, musicians who make money end up making more music. If artists can use the likes of Bandcamp subscriptions to get a more direct connection with their fans, the result can be a virtuous circle, money going to artists who then create new material, which reaches subscribers and keeps them happily feeding the machine. This is even more important for indie artists who, for whatever reason, cannot tour and so rely solely on their recorded output.</p> <p>Naturally, like with the largely similar Patreon, not everyone&rsquo;s going to emerge with the funds to make a living. As journo chum and musician Gary Marshall&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bigmouthstrikesagain.com/archives/5574">recently said about his own output</a>: &ldquo; Thanks to the internet I know exactly how few people give a shit&rdquo;. (Incidentally,&nbsp;<a href="http://dmgm.bandcamp.com">his music is on Bandcamp and well worth a listen</a>.) But for artists, it&rsquo;s at least something different from the Spotifys of this world; for everyone else, it&rsquo;s a chance to get more of what you want, through putting your money where your mouth is, and get the satisfaction of knowing you&rsquo;re directly supporting music you love.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/christmas-2013/christmas-gift-guide-12-gadget-gifts-music-makers/feature">Stuff&#39;s Christmas gift guide 2014: 12 gadget gifts for music makers</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Bandcamp" alt="Note perfect: Why Bandcamp’s direct-to-artist subscriptions are a brilliant idea" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Screen%20shot%202014-12-18%20at%2012.56.30.png?1419168643" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/music/note-perfect-why-bandcamp-s-direct-artist-subscriptions-are-brilliant-idea/feature#comments Music Opinion Streaming Thu, 18 Dec 2014 13:04:13 +0000 Jools Whitehorn 1455666 at http://www.stuff.tv Cyrus Lyric 09 http://www.stuff.tv/ipod-hi-fi/cyrus-lyric-09/review-0 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s not cheap, but if you want the best all-in-one system for your music, the Cyrus Lyric 09 deserves serious attention </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Cyrus Lyric 09 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/cyrus-lyric-09-review-main.jpg?1417525381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/whathifi" title="View user profile.">WhatHiFi</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Make no mistake, the Lyric 09 is proper hi-fi.</p> <p>You&rsquo;d certainly hope so, for the three grand Cyrus is expecting you to swap for it. The Lyric unearths fabulous detail no matter what the source &ndash; uncompressed WAV file from a NAS, or compressed Spotify stream over Bluetooth.</p> <p>Even with the lowest-res files it reveals subtleties that lesser machines simply can&rsquo;t pick out. The sense of scale is captivating, and there&rsquo;s a fine sense of precision and timing to tracks. There&rsquo;s power too, provided by a new hybrid amp design pumping out a claimed 170W per channel. This system will certainly leave an impression.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/christmas-2013/christmas-gift-guide-12-gadgets-and-presents-music-lovers/feature" target="_blank">Christmas Gift Guide 2014: 12 Gadgets and Presents for Music Lovers</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Cyrus Lyric 09 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/cyrus-lyric-09-review-verdict.jpg?1417525381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Cyrus Lyric 09 Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Cyrus Lyric 09 stands out from the crowd in a number of ways &ndash; it doesn&rsquo;t look like a Cyrus product for a start.</p> <p>Far more importantly than that, though, it properly delivers on the next-gen all-in-one system promise, taking the best parts from a variety of Cyrus hi-fi kit and mixing it together to create a beautiful-sounding whole that can truly lay claim to the term hi-fi. Damn skippy, my friend, and this Korg box o&rsquo; tricks is to do with drums. Everyone loves a drummer, and you know why?&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>No, why?</strong><br />Because they nearly always have a car, for the portage of their bulky boommakers. Once you&rsquo;ve got a drummer with his or her Nissan Almera, you&rsquo;ve got yourself a touring band. But there&rsquo;s a problem: once the car is full of drums, there&rsquo;s little room for Billy the bassist or Charlie the cellist or even Rupie the groupie. </p> <p>Which is why you need to present Daria the drummist with the Korg Cliphit. Three sensor clips attach to any object which, when struck, triggers the appropriate drum/cymbal/sample from the device.
