Its connected, energy efficient lights act as proximity sensors to track shoppers directly below them so there&#39;s no need for any additional hardware. The Visible Light Communication system is more accurate than iBeacons, tracking humans to within 1m.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It works like this: the LEDs are switched on and off, faster than the human eye can detect, to send a unique code to your smartphone&#39;s camera.</p> <p>This identifies the exact luminaire (light) above you and the lights will not send a signal when your phone is pocketed or in a bag. The front camera has to be facing upwards for the transfer to happen and the clever Philips lights can track the direction customers are moving in too.&nbsp;</p> <p>It works both ways. Office workers can control the lights directly above them via an app, customers can find things indoors with a GPS-like system and the lights themselves communicate the customers&#39; locations. This allows retailers, museums or sports stadiums to push offers, discounts or recipes to shoppers or visitors when they need them most.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Visible Light Communication set up is already being implemented. Buildings such as The Edge (which opens in Amsterdam in October) will use it to centrally control thousands of lights as well as letting office workers connect to the lights via an app. A pilot project in the Boerhaave Museum, also in The Netherlands, used the intelligent LEDs to determine visitors&#39;&nbsp;extra content on tablets as visitors made their way around the exhibits. </p><p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/hue/party-street-holland-turning-nights-out-live-light-experiment/news">This party street in The Netherlands is turning nights out into a live lighting experiment</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3264" height="2448" title="Using the iPad front camera to read the signal from the lights" alt="Using the iPad front camera to read the signal from the lights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0390.JPG?1412178191" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="3264" height="2448" title="Office workers can tweak colours, tones and intensities of overhead lights" alt="Office workers can tweak colours, tones and intensities of overhead lights" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0313.JPG?1412178191" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/so-long-ibeacons-why-philips-genius-lights-could-win-indoor-gps-war/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/so-long-ibeacons-why-philips-genius-lights-could-win-indoor-gps-war/news#comments Apple Maps Navigation Philips Wed, 01 Oct 2014 13:51:29 +0000 Sophie Charara 1449049 at http://www.stuff.tv Google Maps Navigation http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-maps-navigation/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The most intuitive, fluid and well designed sat-nav app ever made </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="500" height="300" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/GoogleNav3_0.png?1372183957" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tony-horgan" title="View user profile.">Tony Horgan</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>Exclusive to Android, Google Maps with Navigation is a thorn under the toenail of the sat-nav industry.
