Google claims that viewing the display is like looking at a 25in HDTV from eight feet away.</p> <p>The tiny on-board computer is powered by a Texas Instruments dual-core CPU running at 1.2GHz, along with 682MB of RAM and 16GB of storage (12GB of which are available to the user). At the time of writing it&rsquo;s running a modified version of Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich, but Google has revealed that a 4.4 KitKat update is to be released &ldquo;soon&rdquo;.</p> <p>The Explorer Edition sports a raft of sensors (light, proximity, compass, accelerometer and gyroscope) as well as b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a camera capable of taking 5MP stills and 720p HD videos. There&rsquo;s also a bone conduction audio transducer for sound, while an optional wired headset allows you to listen to stereo audio (the earbuds cost US$85, around &pound;50).</p> <p>Glass isn&rsquo;t a standalone device, but rather a companion device that keeps in constant touch with your smartphone (pretty much a necessity as it doesn&rsquo;t have its own cellular data connection or GPS). It&rsquo;ll work with any Bluetooth-equipped phone, but you won&rsquo;t be able to run the MyGlass app (more on that below) unless the phone is using iOS 7 or Android 4.0.3 and above.</p> <p>The built-in battery is perhaps Explorer Edition&rsquo;s greatest weakness, because even with light use it&rsquo;s unlikely to power Glass for more than a day. If you leave the screen on constantly, it&rsquo;ll be drained in just two or three hours. We&rsquo;ve got our fingers and toes crossed in the hopes that battery life will be improved with the retail edition.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/glass/got-google-glass-dont-be-glasshole-says-google/news" target="_blank">Got Google Glass? After tilting your head up or tapping the touchpad to activate the computer, you can say &ldquo;OK Glass&rdquo; followed by a question or instruction: &ldquo;take a photo&rdquo;, say, or &ldquo;how tall is the London Eye?&rdquo; You can also send text messages and open apps this way &ndash; it&rsquo;s pretty much the default way to use Glass and Google&rsquo;s voice recognition technology is excellent.</p> <p>Visually, the UI uses a similar &ldquo;card&rdquo;-based approach to Google Now on an Android phone or tablet, and it looks sufficiently clean, simple and large on the jewel display. Mobile Review founder Eldar Murtazin recently tweeted that Samsung was prepping its own Glass competitor, set to fall under the same brand as its <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-gear/samsung-galaxy-gear/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Gear Smartwatch</a>. The smart money&#39;s on an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/microsoft-xbox-one/review" target="_blank">Xbox One</a> accessory.</p> <p>In November 2012, an ambitious AR project <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20462840" target="_blank">leaked from Microsoft</a> suggested that the company was already working on smartglasses in 2011.&nbsp;<a href="http://appft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;d=PG01&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;s1=%2220120293548%22.PGNR.&amp;OS=DN/20120293548&amp;RS=DN/20120293548" target="_blank">The patent</a>&nbsp;talked of the possibility of overlaying detailed info while viewing a live event. Think stats above a sportsperson, lyrics next to a pop star, or contact details next to recognised friends. Given that the patent was filed by&nbsp;Kathryn Stone Perez, executive producer of the Xbox Incubation unit, it appears likely that Microsoft&#39;s smart glasses are intended to work with the Xbox One, rather than as a pair of specs that you&#39;ll wear out and about.</p> <p>Backing this up, a&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/xbox-720-drop-2013-kinect-2-and-ar-glasses/news" target="_blank">leaked Microsoft document</a>&nbsp;from 2010&nbsp;showing the road map for its next-gen Xbox suggested that the company was working on &quot;Project Fortaleza,&quot; a set of AR-equipped glasses that could be used to play games on the console. Although Fortaleza didn&#39;t launch alongside the Xbox One, a&nbsp;<a href="http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;co1=AND&amp;d=PG01&amp;s1=20130196757.PGNR.&amp;OS=DN/20130196757RS=DN/20130196757" target="_blank">patent</a>&nbsp;for the AR specs reveals that the glasses would gather &quot;eye-tracking information, depth information [and] facial recognition information&quot; in order to navigate menus and invite players into multiplayer games.</p> <p>Could Fortaleza launch later down the line? Rather than trying to cram an entire computer or notification smarts into a wearable frame, they&#39;ve instead focused on the ability to capture the visual and auditory world around you using an inbuilt HD video camera. It&#39;s activated by a single tactile switch on the side, with the only other truly smart ability coming in the form of live streaming though a phone using YouGen.TV (this lets your Facebook friends in on the action).</p> <p>To ensure they&#39;re still a viable wearable, there&#39;s also a button that engages polarisation, turning them from trendy specs into suitable sunnies. So they&#39;re not all style over substance.</p> <p>They&#39;re available to pre-order in 8GB, 16GB or 32GB (US$300, US$400 and US$500 respectively &ndash; that&#39;s around &pound;190, &pound;250 and &pound;315) varieties and there&rsquo;s a Micro USB plug for recharging and data transfer.</p> <p><strong>Lumus DK-40</strong></p> <p>Better known for producing HUD displays for the US Air Force, Lumus is dipping its toe into the civilian wearable tech market with the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumus-unveils-its-own-google-glass-competitor-and-doesnt-it-look-nice/news" target="_blank">DK-40</a>. The hipsterish smart glasses are being released to developers in early 2014 following a debut appearance at CES. They&#39;ve already one-upped Google Glass with their display; rather than projecting data onto glass, the DK-40 features a transparent 640x480 display that fills the entire right lens. Other specs include a 5MP camera and motion sensor, plus an OS based on Android; you&#39;ll have to wait until CES for more details, though with battery life a scant 1-2 hours, the DK40 clearly has some way to go yet.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Nissan 3E" alt="Nissan 3E" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nissan-3e.jpg?1386572084" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Epiphany Eyewear" alt="Epiphany Eyewear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/epiphany-eyewear.jpg?1386572084" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="604" height="452" title="Lumus" alt="Lumus" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Lumus.jpg?1386572084" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/glass/eyeing-glass-rivals/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Geek accessories Glass Google Wearable tech Fri, 06 Dec 2013 17:39:03 +0000 Ben Stinson 1428575 at http://www.stuff.tv Lumus unveils its own Google Glass competitor (and doesn't it look nice) http://www.stuff.tv/lumus-unveils-its-own-google-glass-competitor-and-doesnt-it-look-nice/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> This HUD rival to Glass comes with an in-lens display </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="684" height="512" title="Lumus smart glasses" alt="Lumus smart glasses" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Lumus.jpg?1386327236" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The wearable space is heating up even more. Lumus, better known for making military grade stuff than anything for the man on the street, has decided to look at a different market.</p> <p>Its new product, the DK-40 dev kit, will look more at home in a home than it will on the battlefield. In fact it looks a lot like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/glass/google-glass-could-be-your-face-next-year/news">Google Glass</a>, albeit with chunky-framed Wayfarer-ish styling rather than Google&#39;s chosen future goggles look.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/nigel-yap-0" title="View user profile.">Nigel Yap</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumus-unveils-its-own-google-glass-competitor-and-doesnt-it-look-nice/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/lumus-unveils-its-own-google-glass-competitor-and-doesnt-it-look-nice/news#comments Glass Google Wearable tech Fri, 06 Dec 2013 10:47:00 +0000 Will Findlater 1429841 at http://www.stuff.tv
