Google Play Music comes to Sonos

Yep, the best music streamer around just got better...

Somewhere, there’s a top Sonos exec with a list of streaming services missing from the platform. Well that list just got one shorter, because Google Play Music has now joined the ever-expanding Sonos family.

As of right now, if you’re a Play Music user with a £10/month All Access account you’ll be able to stream directly to any Sonos kit in your setup in one of two ways.

Firstly, you’ll be able to whisk your tunes to Sonos from within the Play Music app for Android. That could be handy if you’ve already got playlists set up within the app, or if you like the rather nice Radio and Explore features, which respectively create Last.fm-style playlists based on your favourite artists or songs and suggest new music to listen to.

Alternatively, you’ll be able to add Play Music as a service on Sonos in the same way that you already can with Spotify and its ilk, then stream directly from the Sonos app. Coupled with the universal search option added last month, you could create playlists made up of tracks from Play Music, Spotify, Deezer, Napster, Rdio and all the rest, interspersed with songs from your own library.

What’s more, it could offer people a way to listen to their own music on Sonos without needing a laptop or Network Attached Storage device at home to store it on. That’s because Play Music enables users to upload up to 20,000 of their own tunes to the cloud. Amazon’s Cloud Player service – also available on Sonos – does the same thing, but Play Music offers the advantage that if you’re bored with your own collection, you can also stream from Google’s own library of ooh, about 200 gazillion songs.

We’ll be trying the service out just as soon as we can, and will bring you a review shortly after.
