And that&#39;s not its only advantage over its rival. While GoPro users have to either make do with a teeny little monochrome screen or spend an extra &pound;80 for a clip-on LCD panel, the Garmin has a proper colour display.&nbsp;</p> <p>Well, we say &#39;proper&#39;. The VIRB&#39;s&nbsp;&lsquo;Chroma&rsquo; display is powered by ambient light - which is great for battery life, but not so good for viewing in poor conditions; use it in the dark and it&#39;ll be virtually blank. Still, it&#39;s a screen, and the fact that it&#39;s on there at all makes it easier to&nbsp;frame shots, review footage and alter settings in many situations.</p> <p>You want features? With built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, the Elite can log your location and altitude and send heart-rate, speed, cadence and temperature info to other Garmin gear. A variety of mounts will be available, letting you lash the VIRBs to helmets, handlebars, surfboards and more. There'll also be a proper underwater housing to let you capture all those deep sea adventures.</p> <p>The VIRB Elite ups the ante with built-in Wi-Fi, GPS and accelerometer and altimeter sensors, which means it will cost around £350 to the vanilla VIRB’s £270. The sensors track speed and elevation, and this can be stored on the device for later review or even embedded into videos directly, to be displayed on-screen while you're watching. Wi-Fi, meanwhile, allows the camera to link up with dedicated Android and iOS apps, which allow you to stop/start recording, snap a still image and share your captures.</p> <p>While Garmin has primarily been concerned with navigation in the past, the company does have some photography experience: cameras are integrated into some of its walking sat-nav devices in the Montana and Dakota ranges. So we're optimistic about the capabilities of the two VIRB models. We'll be looking to get our mitts on some samples soon, to see how they stack up against the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/gopro-hd-hero-3-silver-edition/review">GoPro HD Hero3</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="VIRB Elite" alt="VIRB Elite" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/garmin-virb-elite.jpg?1377015125" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/action-cam/navigations-squares-garmin-goes-gnarly-virb-action-cams/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Action Cam Garmin Tue, 20 Aug 2013 14:19:57 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1425699 at http://www.stuff.tv Want to turn your car into a jet fighter? Keeping a constant Bluetooth connection to your phone, you can share your ride before you set-off, allowing your Twitter and Facebook followers to click on a link and track your ride in real-time. The 3490LMT looks and feels more like a phone than a sat-nav. It’s just 9mm thick and has multitouch screen that reminds you just how archaic those resistive tappity-tap displays are on most of its rivals. It’s also got a four-hour battery life, which in sat-nav terms is pretty good.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Garmin Nüvi 3490LMT" alt="Garmin Nüvi 3490LMT" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Garmin3490-hands7_0_0.jpg?1372357480" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Garmin Nüvi 3490LMT – messy cables </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>However, if you want to take advantage of the Garmin’s subscription-free traffic info you’ll have to plug it into your car's 12-volt socket, since the antenna that’s needed to pick up that TMC data from the FM airwaves connects via the power cable.
