That&rsquo;s this year&rsquo;s car. But we&rsquo;ll progressively be offering more and more automated functions, so in the mid-term, around five years, we&rsquo;ll see things like traffic jam assistance, where it&rsquo;ll take the adaptive cruise control we&rsquo;ve got already and combine it with automated steering and braking, and have the vehicle drive itself in stop-start traffic up to 50-60kmph. We&rsquo;re doing research into cognitive workload, which lets you sense via heart rate or breathing if you&rsquo;re in a stressful situation. So if you think of a stressful driving situation, such as pulling onto a busy roundabout &ndash; if the car knows you need to concentrate, it can block incoming calls and stop traffic alerts, so you have no distractions.&quot;</p> <p>All of which sounds pretty great, but when are we getting the flying cars? So tell us again about those wonderful human reaction times and how awesome your driving is.</p> <p>The reason tech firms from Motorola to Microsoft and transport planners are excited about autonomous cars is because taking driving out of human hands could be one of the most effective ways of saving lives since smallpox was eradicated.</p> <p>Google&#39;s cars have already proved themselves safer than human drivers, with just two minor accidents on record. One was the fault of the human driver, who had taken temporary control, the other was a rear-end shunt while the robot car was stationary.</p> <p>By continually drawing 3D maps taken from lots of sensors and comparing them against each other in real-time, the promise of robot cars are vehicles that are so aware of their surroundings it&#39;s almost impossible to crash into them. The theory is that autonomous cars are vehicles that are better at keeping following distances, don&#39;t shoot red lights and can brake harder, faster and more safely when they detect danger around them.</p> <p>Oh, and without human interference there&#39;d be no chancing it with split second red lights or undertaking to worry about. And since there&#39;d be bunching up on motorways and creating pointless traffic bottlenecks, or heavy feet to stamp on the accelerator, traffic would move faster, more efficiently and use less fuel too. Keeping traffic flowing safely and smoothly would also negate the effect that gridlock and traffic jams have on local economies too. And with 5,000 developers downloading Ford's SDK to make their apps compatible with its SYNC platform, it looks like app-enabled cars could soon become a reality.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All Your Existing Apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The beauty of the AppLink system is that everything's synced up and ready to go as soon as you plump your behind down in the car. The voice recognition doesn't rely on your phone's capabilities or the likes of Google Voice; instead, it uses Ford's own tech to keep things consistent. App developers can give Ford vocab to plug in to this voice tech so that for instance, you can search for artists and playlists hands-free when using Spotify.</p> <p>Using basic voice commands, we instructed the TomTom app to give us directions to a friend's address – taken from a list of contacts – with no fuss and zero prodding or fumbling about with satnavs. Ford has just announced a voice activated Hotels.com app, too – but since we don't usually book hotels in our car, we tested out the Autoread app instead.</p> <p>Created with Deutsche Telecom, Autoread can read emails and text messages out to you and take dictations. It's also handy, as we found out in our demo, for reading out the morning's RSS feeds from pre-defined categories so you can get a personalised news bulletin on the way to work. The overall experience wasn't the smoothest but Ford assures us it will get better and better the next few months.</p> <p>A note on accents: Brits might struggle with SYNC's voice recognition when in the UK - according to Ford, the system prefers American pronunication and even European speakers' accents when speaking to English to the British accent. So that might explain a couple of the hiccups we had – but we're willing to reserve judgement for a test of the final SYNC and AppLink software when that's ready.</p> <p>Unless European legislation makes access to emergency services a mandatory feature of in-car systems – which it easily could – Ford's ploughing on with the smartphone route. Even if these laws are passed, Ford says that it's committed to letting its drivers use their existing apps in a driving-friendly, distraction-free way. That gets a thumbs up from us.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Ford AppLink" alt="Ford AppLink" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ford-applink-hands-on-IFA-1.JPG?1379184775" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Ford AppLink" alt="Ford AppLink" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ford-applink-hands-on-IFA-2.JPG?1379184775" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Ford AppLink" alt="Ford AppLink" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ford-applink-hands-on-IFA-3.JPG?1379184775" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> When Can I Get AppLink? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Ford EcoSport is the only European model to offer this beefed up AppLink and Sync set-up.
