It tags enemies and adds them to your map, highlights alarms and mains power cables, detects and analyses evidence, and even allows you to listen to conversations from afar. It&rsquo;s hardly <em>The Wire</em> but it at least gives the illusion of some police work before the bullets start to fly.</p> <p>Essentially the scanner allows you to plan your approach, and in <em>Hardline</em> there are often numerous ways to tackle each situation. Do you want to lure enemies into isolation by chucking empty bullet cases to catch their attention, before knocking them out cold or hitting them with a taser? Or go in gung-ho with all guns blazing? Whichever one you choose you&rsquo;ll know when an enemy has spotted you because a small crescent appears above their head, gradually increasing in size until it turns red, at which point you&rsquo;ll be welcomed with hot lead.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/top-20-games-you-can-play-free-your-browser/feature">Kill your productivity - 30 great games you can play for free in your browser</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kk34yU1BGiU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Packing Heat </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The weapons loadout screen is where <em>Hardline</em> is most reminiscent of previous <em>Battlefield</em> games. The possibilities aren&rsquo;t quite endless but it&rsquo;ll take a very long time to try out each one. Primary and secondary weapons can be customised with different scopes, stocks and barrels, while you can select various gadgets to aid your chosen approach, including grappling hooks and ziplines.</p> <p>&ldquo; Most games developers love films but the reality is a videogame is not like a film,&rdquo; <em>Hardline</em>&rsquo;s exec producer Steve Papoutsis tells <em>Stuff</em> after the playthrough. &ldquo;A film is two and a half hours long. Videogames are much, much longer, and they also break down more like TV episodes.&rdquo; Despite this he cites The Joker&rsquo;s bank heist from <em>The Dark Knight</em> as one of the team&rsquo;s many influences, alongside the dialogue style of TV series such as <em>Justified</em>, while the blurred lines between the two sides of the law reminded us of cult cops-gone-bad drama <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>In fact, it goes much further than just ziplines and grappling hooks; the codes and conducts of television have been weaved right into the structure of the game. Aside from the decision to divide it into 10 episodes, you&rsquo;ll also be reminded what happened previously when you fire up the game, and offered a teaser of what&rsquo;s coming next when you choose to stop playing.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/halo-5-guardians/halo-5-guardians-hands/review">Halo 5 Guardians hands-on preview</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1126" title="Why so serious?" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hardline_hostage_hosting.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="6720" height="3952" title="You&#039;re under a vest" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Nick_Arrest_Tap.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Style council </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Those influences also extend to the various &lsquo;Fortress Encounters&rsquo; that you&rsquo;ll be faced with throughout the game. These are more open-world style, finale-type missions with multiple ways to approach them &ndash; think the bank robbery from <em>Heat</em> combined with the outpost raids from <em>Far Cry 3</em>. The one we played involved breaking into a high-rise building and making our way to a vault at the top. We tried to sneak in through the loading bay at the back but on being discovered by a guard had to switch tactic on-the-fly to something a little louder, inviting a stampede of enemies armed with gas grenades and automatic weapons.</p> <p>Many games have claimed to allow multiple styles of play before, but in <em>Hardline</em> it feels like you genuinely have options &ndash; and if one doesn&rsquo;t work you can fall back on the other without being unfairly punished. According to Papoutsis the encounter we played is possible to complete by knocking out just four or five enemies and leaving the rest alone.</p> <p><em>Hardline</em>&rsquo;s differing playing styles don&rsquo;t just affect how many bodies you leave in your wake. There&rsquo;s a scoring system built into the game that keeps track of what kind of player you are: a Protectionist or a Loose Cannon. &ldquo; We have tried diligently to create scenarios that make sense for a cop to use lethal force,&rdquo; explains Papoutsis, &ldquo;but more importantly also give players the choice to use non-lethal force to get the job done. We need to figure out a good way to make the incentives and rewards equal [for both approaches].&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature">35 fantastic free Android games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1088" title="Battlefield Hardline" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hardline_piggyback_rescue.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1920" height="1080" title="Hardline&#039;s new Fortress Encounters" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/hardline_sp_boomer.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paper chase </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For many,&nbsp;<em>Battlefield</em> and multiplayer go hand-in-hand and <em>Hardline</em> is no different. Back at E3 in June we jumped into a game of Blood Money. Playing as the police our team was charged with grabbing bags of cash from the middle of the map and bringing it back to our base. To complicate matters, the crooks were attempting the same thing. Yes, it&rsquo;s essentially capture-the-flag, but in the context of a bank robbery. However, there&rsquo;s a twist &ndash; you can steal money back from your opponent&rsquo;s base.</p> <p>That should mean that individual games will be more nuanced than they are in some multiplayer titles, but we were too busy exploring downtown LA to actually try and win. Though not very large geographically, the map does feature tons of nooks and crannies you can hide in, such as carparks and back alleys, making it an interesting environment to spend time in. The rest of our team seemingly had the same idea, so it&#39;s hardly surprising that we lost.</p> <p>The challenge Visceral Games will face is balancing the desire from <em>Battlefield</em> veterans for huge maps, with environments that make sense in the context and with the tighter engagement distances of this game. The inclusion of 64-player game modes and vehicles should help that, even if our ride on a motorbike was ended prematurely when we were run over and crushed by an armoured vehicle.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/assassins-creed-unity/review">Assassin&#39;s Creed Unity review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="7565" height="4543" title="Hardline multiplayer" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/battlefield_hardline_7_wm_1.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Delayed Reaction </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Originally intended for launch in November, <em>Battlefield Hardline</em> has been put on probation until 2015. While that&rsquo;s disappointing for itchy-trigger-fingered gamers, Papoutsis says it&rsquo;s allowed his team to address some of the issues that arose from the multiplayer beta back in June, from consistency within the storyline to boring stability issues and bugs.</p> <p>Anyone who played that beta will have noticed it felt a lot like <em>Battlefield</em> in fancy dress. Outfits aside it was difficult to pick out of a line-up next to <em>Battlefield 4</em> (or even <em>3</em>), but the single-player game we played had its own very distinct identity.</p> <p>The guns still feel big and heavy, and the environments deteriorate brilliantly when caught in the crossfire (we particularly like the way soft furnishings leave a cloud of feathers hanging in the air when the shooting stops) but Hardline&rsquo;s more memorable characters and new police-specific game mechanics set it apart from both its <em>Battlefield</em> stablemates and other first-person shooters. Let&rsquo;s hope it lives up to the promise when it&rsquo;s released in March next year.</p> <p><em>Additional multiplayer reporting by Melvin Tang</em></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/3ds/25-most-anticipated-games-2015/feature">The 25 most anticipated games of 2015</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1080" title="&quot; What do you mean Hardline&#039;s been delayed?&quot;" alt="Battlefield Hardline hands-on" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chopshop_nick_1080.jpg?1415911932" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Preview </div> </div> </div> http://www.stuff.tv/battlefield-hardline/review#comments Console games E3 2014 Electronic Arts First Play Gaming PlayStation 3 PlayStation 4 Xbox 360 Xbox One Thu, 13 Nov 2014 20:52:15 +0000 Marc McLaren 1439364 at http://www.stuff.tv Rainbow Six: Siege: First Play http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/tom-clancys-rainbow-six-siege-first-play/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ubisoft&#039;s new multiplayer hostage-taker melds the genius of Counter-Strike with the Tom Clancy universe </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A bit heavy handed considering they&#039;re just rescuing a cat stuck up a tree" alt="Tom Clancy&#039;s Rainbox Six: Siege review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/rainbow-six-siege-002.jpg?1402968498" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <p>There are large numbers of people (members of the <em>Stuff</em> team among them) who have spent many years, decades even, on a fairly small number of maps like <em>de_dust</em> and <em>de_italy</em> in <em>Counter-Strike</em>.</p> <p>Those maps remain interesting because it&rsquo;s interesting to play against other people: no enemy AI can beat the aggression, unpredictability and tactical thinking of a human opponent. Meanwhile, the SWAT team send camera drones into the house to do reconnaissance.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6wlvYh0h63k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CANDID CAMERA </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We played two rounds as the bad guys, and one as the po-po. Although they took place in the same house, with the same teams, they were entirely different games each time: in one, our team hid the civilian in an upstairs bedroom, fortified walls and barricaded windows (and blew out a wall or two, to allow for better lines of fire) and covered a potential entry-point each.</p> <p>It worked well, with each team-mate taking out one opponent. On our second round we hid our hostage in the basement, sealed up several walls and used the building more like a fortress, but we&rsquo;d neglected a weak point. The SWAT guys blew a hole in the ceiling, poured a load of flashbangs through it and wiped us out.</p> <p>This is real strategy: not just finding the one way to win a fixed map, but constantly having to adapt your plan based on what the other team is doing. And you do know what they&rsquo;re doing, because you have CCTV cameras in the building (if you&rsquo;re a bad guy) and camera drones if you&rsquo;re a SWAT operative. The demo in Sony&rsquo;s booth at E3 2014 is excruciatingly short at around 5 minutes, but it&rsquo;s just enough of a taster to&nbsp;make me really excited about a game that hadn&rsquo;t previously grabbed too much of my attention.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Grim beauty </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The first thing you notice is how downright gorgeous the game is. We&rsquo;re waylaid by &lsquo;revolutionaries&rsquo; on the way and have to clear areas before progressing &ndash; werewolf-like enemies apparently form the core adversaries in the game, but in this demo it&rsquo;s the disgruntled lower classes that are the more immediate problem.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/electronic-arts/e3-2014-biggest-video-game-news-so-far/feature" target="_blank">E3 2014 - all the biggest news</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-8MYYvA-EIo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1600" height="900" title="The cover mechanic is reminiscent of Gears of War" alt="The Order 1886" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/The-Order-1886-4.jpg?1402798506" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Thermite in the streets of London </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Combat is an absolute joy, thanks in no small part to the thermite rifle - one of the most awesome weapons in recent video gaming memory (it&rsquo;s also one letter away from being a &lsquo;termite&rsquo; rifle, which would also be awesome).</p> <p>When carrying this weapon your primary fire shoots out thermite particles, creating localised clouds around your enemy, press the secondary fire button and you launch a flare that ignites the cloud and anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in it. You are recruited by &#39;the Traveller&#39;; a mysterious white, spherical entity who commands you to investigate and destroy these threats before humanity is eradicated.</p> <p>Your first task upon booting up is to choose your class, picking between Titan, Hunter and Warlock. Broadly speaking, these are <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s versions of the standard soldier, stealth and mage classes, and each has a different mix of abilities. Our Titan, for example, could smash the ground and dissolve enemies in a bombastic special move. We teamed up with a Hunter, whose special ability was a flaming pistol that would disintegrate enemies with its solar light. Each of these abilities had to recharge, which took time, so they could be used only fleetingly in combat.</p> <p>After choosing a class, another MMO-style feature presented itself - the character-creation screen. Bungie&rsquo;s offering has the same options as most games we&rsquo;ve seen: customisable genders, races, faces etc. The difference here is in the exquisite details and animations:&nbsp;<em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s characters look absolutely stunning.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fifa-15-first-play/review">We&#39;ve played FIFA 15 - and it&#39;s looking great so far</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4yg0Jk1WZsE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Into the Breach </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you&rsquo;ve created a character, you&rsquo;re immediately thrown into a tutorial mission. This takes place in Old Russia - a beautiful but decrepit snowy wasteland with gorgeous features such as abandoned space shuttles, rusting industrial complexes and Northern lights punctuating the background.</p> <p>The game quickly tells you to press the DualShock 4&rsquo;s touch pad to bring up the Traveller - the small orb that&rsquo;s recruited you to save the universe. On the most basic level, the Traveller silently points to your objective, but it also vocalises the game&rsquo;s back story in actor Peter &#39;Tyrion Lannister&#39; Dinklage&rsquo;s familiar tones.</p> <p>The Traveller informs you that you&rsquo;re in Russia to find out what The Fallen (a mysterious alien race) are protecting - thankfully, it&rsquo;s only a matter of seconds before you come across one of them in the flesh. When you lock them in your sights, vital information immediately appears onscreen: a number denoting their class (in this case a &ldquo;2&rdquo;), the name of the unit, and a health bar.</p> <p>Doing what comes naturally in a first-person shooter, we begin to fire at the enemy drone with our shotgun - the first shot takes off 75% of its health, the second finishes it off. The brief battle startles another couple of Fallen units, but rather than come straight at us, they demonstrate Bungie&rsquo;s famously high level of artificial intelligence by ducking behind the nearest cover and seemingly communicating with each other before launching a coordinated attack. Fortunately, we&#39;ve switched to the plasma rifle by this point, enabling us to dispatch them fairly easily and pick up one of the game&rsquo;s collectable &#39;Grimoire&#39; cards.</p> <p>Suddenly, a massive Fallen ship descends from the sky and fires powerful plasma rounds at us, depleting our rechargeable shield and sending us scuttling off to find cover.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/forza-5/first-play-forza-horizon-2/feature">Forza Horizon 2: First Play</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QnSYuJQvzzI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You Say Halo, I Say Destiny </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While <em>Destiny</em> is the result of Bungie attempting to break away from its <em>Halo</em> roots, the DNA of the famous Xbox shooter is undoubtedly present, particularly when it comes to its gunplay. In fact, if a layman played the game without knowing anything about it, they&rsquo;d probably think it was a <em>Halo</em> sequel of some description.</p> <p>On a basic level, the shotgun boasts many of the same qualities as the Halo equivalent - the same distinctive circular aiming reticule, the wide spread and the slow reload speed. The melee strikes, mapped to the R1 button on PS4, feel powerful and fun to land. There&rsquo;s a shield that recharges whenever you&rsquo;re not getting hit. These are all features reminiscent of the <em>Halo</em> games that Bungie produced, and which defined Xbox consoles more than any other series.</p> <p>Not everything is <em>Halo</em>-inspired though: Bungie has definitely learned a lot from role-playing games too. When you shoot at and hit enemies, numbers denoting the health damage pour out of them like lost blood. Ammunition is relatively sparse, so you have to scavenge around for loot (although far less so than in something like <em>Borderlands 2</em>). You can spawn a vehicle when you&rsquo;re out in the open to travel around quickly. And there&rsquo;s a levelling system that sees you unlocking new weapons, abilities and power-ups.</p> <p>These are all features that have appeared in other games before, but like Bruce Lee taking various types of martial arts and only keeping the stuff that worked, Bungie has pilfered the best gaming ideas from the last 10 years and applied them to their excellent shooting mechanics.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/evil-within-first-play/review">The Evil Within - First Play of Resident Evil mastermind&nbsp;Shinji Mikami&#39;s new survival horror</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1080" title="Got &#039;em!" alt="Destiny alpha release - First Play" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/destiny-alpha-first-play-006.jpg?1402650540" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fireteam Bravo </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Continuing with the alpha, we decide to engage a few more enemies, this time of a higher Level 5 rating.</p> <p>As we approach our objective, we come across another player attempting the same mission. This could be to kill a certain number of enemies, find something hidden, or recover treasures from around the map. These quests are also interrupted with random events that you can choose to engage with or ignore, such as a contingency of Fallen landing and you only having a limited amount of time to kill them.</p> <p>This more free-form gameplay is generally fun, but it does show up one element of <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s structure that could frustrate, and that&rsquo;s the &#39;grind&#39;. It&rsquo;s something that MMO players will be familiar with; fighting off loads of enemies just to level up your character so that they&rsquo;re powerful enough to engage in the next part of the story. The skirmishes are great, especially one fight against a giant Noble Devil Walker, but there&#39;s a lot of killing and fetching to do before we reach Level 6.</p> <p>It&#39;s here that the game&rsquo;s difficulty ramps up significantly, too. We come across some incredibly strong regenerating Hive Knight enemies that two people simply can&#39;t kill, so we&#39;re left with no other option but to desperately run past the gangs of enemies in a cowardly attempt to reach the objective. The tactic works, but it doesn&rsquo;t feel particularly fair or satisfying. Fortunately, we manage to find a third person for the team within a matter of minutes, but when we do engage in combat, we frequently end up dying and needing to be revived by someone (if they don&rsquo;t get to you within around 40 seconds, you respawn in a safe area).&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/top-20-games-you-can-play-free-your-browser/feature">Kill your productivity - Stuff&#39;s top 30 free browser games</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g16Z1z_2ZPA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The Crucible </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s competitive multiplayer mode is housed in an area of the map called The Crucible. And while the game is packed with tasty motors, you might spend more time gawping at the landscape: the open-world map covers a large chunk of southern Europe, which the developers picked for the roads and scenery, and it&#39;s rendered in astonishing detail. As is the weather. The weather is really something.&nbsp;</p> <p>&quot; With next-gen hardware we can simulate the weather, rather than faking it,&quot; Ralph told us, &quot;which means the atmosphere and the rain are there, they&#39;re modelled as particles in the game. In the last Horizon, if we wanted a rainbow to appear, we&#39;d have to stick a bunch of polygons in the air to make it look like there was a rainbow there. In this version, we have water particles in the air and we shine light through them at the right angle and you get a rainbow, like you do in real life. With a huge scope for customising your motors, the developers say that 100 hours is a &#39;very conservative estimate&#39; for the amount of time it&#39;ll take you to go through all the challenges the game has to offer.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1920" height="1080" title="Forza Horizon 2: First Play" alt="Forza Horizon 2: First Play" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/E3_PressKit_10_WM_ForzaHorizon2.jpg?1402650781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> it&#039;s not just about winning </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Skills - rewards for driving stylishly - were part of the original Horizon, but in the sequel they&#39;re a significant part of the game. Where RPGs and FPSs rely upon huge cinematic environments and characters voiced by Hollywood stars, racing games are purely about play: you versus the physics engine. Your reflexes and your understanding of the track are the stars, and the developers at Codemasters have agonised over&nbsp;<em>GRID</em>&rsquo;s physics. They&rsquo;ve been working on striking a very difficult balance, because while some games - most notably the&nbsp;<em>Forza</em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Gran Turismo</em>&nbsp;series - are all about being exactly as realistic as possible, they end up being as difficult as possible. Let&rsquo;s face it, if you tried to drive any real car with a gamepad while floating three feet above and behind the back window, you wouldn&rsquo;t get far.</p> <p>GRID&rsquo;s challenge is to making racing seem realistic, without making it so you spin out every time you stomp the accelerator. It&#39;s the same aim Codemasters has had for decades: to make&nbsp;a racing game rather than a racing sim, and throughout the F1, TOCA, Dirt, Micro Machines, Colin McRae and Race Driver series, the sweet spot between realism and fun has moved around. To help them find it for&nbsp;<em>GRID</em>, Codemasters enlisted racing drivers and journalists from&nbsp;<em>Autosport</em>&nbsp;to help them&nbsp;figure out how to make the cars feel more realistic than they really are, by doing things like adjusting the points at which the tyres lose grip (you can read more about this exacting process&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.codemasters.com/grid/05/grid-autosport-handling-chronicles/">on their blog</a>).&nbsp;</p> <p>We found the cars in the new&nbsp;<em>GRID</em>&nbsp;are still easy to spin out - especially the F1 cars - but the game as a whole seems more pick-up-and-playable than one of the big-name racing sims. If you&rsquo;re the kind of driver who has to turn on some assists to make it around a track in&nbsp;<em>Forza</em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>Gran Turismo</em>, GRID offers a nice challenge. We still found ourselves battling for second- or third-to-last, but we had a lot of fun getting there.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/first-play-watchdogs/feature">First Play - Watch_Dogs</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Grid01.jpg?1400828194" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The other element that adds to the fun is the AI. On the contrary, GRID: Autosport&rsquo;s cars are perhaps a little too fighty. It&rsquo;s down to licensing. The developers have to persuade Ferrari and Porsche and Bugatti to let them use digital versions of their cars in the game, but car marques are as much luxury brands as handbag makers, and they rely just as much on their image. So if you&rsquo;re going to show a Ferrari in a game, you can&rsquo;t show it getting too beaten up, or they won&rsquo;t license it.</p> <p>In this respect,&nbsp;<em>GRID: Autosport</em>&nbsp;actually wins some realism points off its more crisply rendered relations, because it permits proper damage. On the San Francisco circuit we tried for a rather ambitious straight line through a chicane at just over 100mph (nearly made it, mind you) and managed to bend the bonnet in half. A few corners later, we used a touch too much handbrake and went sideways into a wall at similar speed, and the passenger door swung crazily open for a couple of corners before slamming shut again. A nice touch - realistic enough, but not too realistic.</p> <p>Oh, and if you completely disagree and graphics mean everything to you&hellip; well, the PC version comes with a 5GB high-res texture pack, runs at 60fps and can be played at 4K.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stealth/first-play-thief/feature">First Play - Thief</a></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Grid02.jpg?1400828194" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/grid04.jpg?1400828194" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/first-play-grid-autosport/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/first-play-grid-autosport/feature#comments Apps and Games Console games First Play Gaming Mon, 05 May 2014 10:11:18 +0000 Will Dunn 1436611 at http://www.stuff.tv First Play: Watch_Dogs http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/first-play-watchdogs/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We first got our paws on Watch_Dogs very briefly last year, but now we’ve had a full four-and-a-half-hour preview of a much more finished build, and we’re impressed. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1198" height="900" title="Bark to the future" alt="Watch_Dogs" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/STEAMPIPE.jpg?1398825967" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Let&rsquo;s start with a few <em>pointers</em>: in case you haven&rsquo;t read our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-4/watchdogs-preview/review" target="_blank">preview</a>, Watch_Dogs is an open-world game in the <em>GTA</em>/<em>Saints Row</em> mould, but with a story that sets it apart. Unless they&rsquo;ve got a helicopter, that is, in which case best practice is to either hide under a bridge, or just keep driving until you explode.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="His bark was worse than his bike" alt="Watch_Dogs driving" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/MOTORCYCLE.jpg?1398825967" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> wired for hound </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Jumping into a car and landing in the previous occupant&rsquo;s choice of radio station is an important scene-setting element in any game in which you get to steal cars. Stick said cyberdrug in your ear and the real world fades away and is replaced by a hallucinatory mini-game: in one, you drive a flaming hot rod through a burning landscape, racking up points for the number of flame-headed zombies you mow down. In another, you stamp around Chicago in a huge mechanical spider, stamping on police cars and blowing things up with a Gatling gun. After a couple of hours of serious story, it&rsquo;s just what you need, and when your bloodthirst is slaked, you go back to the normal game. <em>Thief</em>&nbsp;sticks to its winning original formula. In the bottom left corner of the screen is a jewel that becomes lighter the more visible you are, and this naturally persuades you to keep to the shadows at all times. Your main weapon/tool is the bow and arrow, and while you can use this to shoot people, it isn&rsquo;t <em>Far Cry 3</em>. Most of the arrows you collect are non-lethal and used for putting out torches (to reduce visibility), creating distractions or releasing switches. There&rsquo;s a &lsquo;choke&rsquo; arrow that knocks people unconscious with a cloud of gas, but mainly the idea is to get past without any combat.</p> <p>Movement is faster and more parkour-influenced than the original series, with climbable wall sections, vaults and the occasional slide. There&rsquo;s some nice level design and Garrett&rsquo;s &lsquo;Focus&rsquo; vision highlights the scramble-ready parts of your environment to help you find different paths. As in <em>Deus Ex: Human Revolution</em>, there are hubs from which a lot of different side quests branch off, but in <em>Thief</em> all the levels are replayable, so you can go back and redo a mission with new equipment. This should make it good value in the hours-played-per-pound stakes, and if you pine for the difficulty of the original game, you can have it thanks to some Classic Thief Mod options in the settings.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1221" height="900" title="Most of your victims wake up after a bit" alt="Thief preview" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Thief3.jpg?1398764893" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The writing’s awful </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">While <em>Dishonored</em> certainly owes a lot to the original <em>Thief</em> games, it was also a highly original game in its own right. The people who made Dunwall did months of research and location scouting, and they built a place that has its own clever aesthetic. Like the worlds in the <em>Bioshock</em> series, it&rsquo;s obviously a fantasy world, but one that makes sense.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Thief&rsquo;s</em> city - called The City - and its inhabitants do not make sense. There is no style that defines it, other than that it&rsquo;s sort of olde-worlde. This is not a problem in itself, but the writing and voice acting are atrocious. Most of the NPCs speak in a dialect that goes for Mockney but veers off through Ireland, Australia and possibly Boston for sentences at a time before returning to cod-Victorian. Which, again would fine, except Garrett and most of the other main characters speak in modern American accents, which gives the impression that they&rsquo;re tourists who have wandered into a historical theme park full of drunk, out-of-work actors. There&rsquo;s an evil fascist Baron (you know, like the Lord Regent in <em>Dishonored</em>) and a mysterious plague (you know, like in <em>Dishonored</em>), and people are called things like Cornelius Greaves. At one point there was a mention of opium, and ale. While our two-hour preview wasn&rsquo;t enough to get really get into what could be a much deeper game, what we saw didn&rsquo;t feel particularly imaginative.</p> <p>Will this be enough to put us off <em>Thief</em>? Not necessarily. There are plenty of great games with awful writing and acting, but that doesn&rsquo;t stop them being brilliant fun. Stay tuned for a full review when it&rsquo;s released on February 28th.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1204" height="900" title="&quot; And this is where I roger the fishwife&quot;" alt="Thief preview" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Thief2.jpg?1398764893" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stealth/first-play-thief/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/stealth/first-play-thief/feature#comments First Play Gaming Microsoft PlayStation 4 Sony Stealth Xbox One Fri, 24 Jan 2014 14:15:40 +0000 Will Dunn 1431648 at http://www.stuff.tv
