And now we know that the Danny Boyle-directed Steve Jobs movie will, in fact, be called&nbsp;<em>Steve Jobs</em>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;d heard various reports about the cast, but an official listing has been confirmed: Michael Fassbender is indeed playing Jobs, with Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak, Jeff Daniels as former Apple CEO John Sculley, and Kate Winslet as Apple&rsquo;s ex-marketing chief, Joanna Hoffman. Katherine Waterston, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Sarah Snook also appear in the film.</p> <p>Also affirmed is the distinctive approach for the Aaron Sorkin-penned film: it will focus on Jobs backstage at three major product launches, ending with the iMac, although flashbacks will be used to help set the scene. Opting against the typical, comprehensive biographical approach could confuse anyone not intimately familiar with Jobs&rsquo; career (seriously, read Isaacson&rsquo;s book), but everything else sounds a lot more promising than&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/watch-first-official-jobs-trailer-starring-ashton-kutcher/news">Ashton Kutcher&rsquo;s take</a>&nbsp;on his life.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/steve-jobs-starts-shooting/">Slashfilm</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-steve-jobs-biopic-begins-filming-new-rock-band-game-plans-teased-and-x-files-may">Steve Jobs biopic begins filming</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Exploding Kittens has most backers ever </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Believe it or not, a bizarre card game called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/elanlee/exploding-kittens"><em>Exploding Kittens</em></a>&nbsp;now has the most backers ever assembled for a single Kickstarter campaign - and it still has 22 days to go. Hilarious women, it seems!</p> <p>[Sources: <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/new-all-female-ghostbusters-cast-767610">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/paulfeig/status/560178147954421760">Twitter</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lego/fully-charged-lego-ghostbusters-are-official-and-little-tikes-toy-car-becomes-70mph-hot-hatch/n">LEGO Ghostbusters are official</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8.1.3 requires less space </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple has taken some flak for just how much space is needed to install iOS 8 updates on a device - so much so that the OS footprint recently&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-sued-over-deceptive-device-storage-space-due-ios-8-size/news">led to a lawsuit</a>. It aims to modernize the classic game design from three decades back, and promises to bring back familiar locations, player classes, and the like.</p> <p>This won&rsquo;t be InXile&rsquo;s first experience with the series, either: it also developed 2004&rsquo;s&nbsp;<em>The Bard&rsquo;s Tale</em>, which was a comedic, non-canon side game that wasn&rsquo;t connected to the original trilogy. Ava is so convincing as a human largely due to the way she&rsquo;s depicted on screen. So how far from Ava is Honda&#39;s famed Asimo &#39;bot?</p> <p>&ldquo;In many ways Asimo&rsquo;s pretty primitive,&rdquo; says Shanahan, probably recalling <a href="http://youtu.be/VdydGVtncGE?t=50s">that video of Honda&rsquo;s pride and joy tumbling down a set of stairs</a>. &ldquo;If you&#39;ve ever seen Boston Dynamics&rsquo; Big Dog, that&#39;s a much more realistic way of walking. Asimo calculates every single step, which is very biologically unrealistic.&rdquo;</p> <p>But Ava isn&rsquo;t. She can dress herself, draw and move pretty much like a human being. She&rsquo;s a triumph of soft robotics, albeit one that&rsquo;s not possible just yet. &ldquo;When it comes to the hardware it&#39;s a matter of engineering,&rdquo; Shanahan says. &ldquo;Most robotics these days is made using very hard materials, whereas the stuff we&#39;re made of is soft, pliable and compliant. But eventually we are going to be able to produce humanoid robots that are really very sophisticated and Ava-like.&rdquo;</p> <p>&ldquo;Don&rsquo;t forget we have a four-billion-year advantage over designing robots because we&#39;ve evolved to be like this,&rdquo; adds Rutherford. &ldquo;We are such fluid machines and our mechanics are really sophisticated. I did some stuff with a company based in San Francisco that can get robots to drive cars, walk and jump, but they cannot make them get into cars. I thought that was really striking because it says something about the complexity of physicality.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature">The 30 best things on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4256" height="2832" title="Dr Robotics" alt="Ex Machina: Just how close to reality is Alex Garland’s robo-thriller?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/EXM_D018_02784.jpg?1422108181" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Knowledge is power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But what about the stuff inside Ava&rsquo;s head? I think it probably will happen in the next 100 years.&rdquo;</p> <p>In that case we&rsquo;ve got plenty of time to work out how these AIs will work, and in&nbsp;<em>Ex Machina</em>&nbsp;Nathan uses methods to teach Ava about the world that Shanahan and Rutherford see as being perfectly viable. After all, there are plenty of mundane examples of AI in action in our everyday lives already: Google&rsquo;s search predictions, targeted online adverts and Twitter bots. Sure, they&rsquo;re not likely to power an android&rsquo;s brain anytime soon but using the internet to inform an AI isn&rsquo;t pure science-fiction.</p> <p>&ldquo;There&#39;s a truly enormous repository of data out there about human behaviour,&rdquo; explains Shanahan. &ldquo;Not just textual but videos and pictures, and a sophisticated machine learning algorithm can learn a huge amount from that.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4256" height="2832" title="Knowledge is power" alt="Ex Machina: Just how close to reality is Alex Garland’s robo-thriller?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/brain_concept_v009.jpg?1422108181" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The spy who tweets me </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, there are also negative implications to that sort of data farming and they&rsquo;re not lost on Garland. &ldquo;I&#39;m not on Twitter and I&#39;ve never been on Facebook or MySpace or anything like that. I think we were correctly worried about Snowden and the NSA, and what he did was brilliant. But ultimately in that instance we were talking about governments, and governments are elected. When it gets encapsulated in a 20-second soundbite all of the intellectual nuance underneath it is lost.&rdquo;</p> <p>Garland agrees: &ldquo;If we&#39;re talking about AI as a conscious self-aware machine with an emotional life in the same way we have one, what you&#39;re saying is that the creation of a new consciousness is something innately problematic.</p> <p>&quot;I would say that every time people have a child they create a new consciousness, so I don&#39;t feel necessarily alarmed by it. In the great British comedy tradition, self-delusion, self-hatred and social awkwardness frequently loom large here, and though both the main characters are indisputably despicable, selfish idiots, it&rsquo;s impossible not to get sucked into their (often horrifying) antics. Many a true word is spoken in jest, as they say &ndash; and <em>Peep Show</em> is as much a meditation on the human condition as it is a comedy show. Then again, we&rsquo;re not talking <em>Jackass</em> humour: it may be puerile in places, but it&rsquo;s also laced through with sophisticated gags about philosophy and international finance, clever Eric Idle songs, wacky Terry Gilliam animations and plenty of the gang&rsquo;s trademark surreal genius.&nbsp;<br /><em>- Marc McLaren</em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/54ulXNk-bmo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Father Ted </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Has there ever been a funnier character in comedy history than Father Dougal McGuire? And above is a small taste of what to expect, assuming you know the original version.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://tolkieneditor.wordpress.com">Tolkeineditor</a> via <a href="http://www.slashfilm.com/hobbit-fan-edit/">Slashfilm</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/25-best-things-watch-netflix-right-now/feature">The 30 best things to watch on Netflix right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CzSlLWF5Hjg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/google/fully-charged-material-design-reaches-chrome-ios-steam-broadcasting-goes-live-and-disney-ditc#comments Film and TV Gaming Google iOS apps Wed, 21 Jan 2015 07:30:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1458119 at http://www.stuff.tv Powers TV series premieres exclusively on PlayStation in March http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/powers-tv-series-premieres-exclusively-playstation-march/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Long-awaited live-action adaptation is gaming network’s first foray into TV </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Powers" alt="Powers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/powers-playstation.jpg?1421787177" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Amidst Sony&rsquo;s booming E3 conference last summer, the company took the time to spotlight a TV show - no doubt, because it&rsquo;s PlayStation&rsquo;s first original series. production. CNET reports that crew members completed setting up the famous garage scene that Jobs and partner Steve Wozniak first set up shop in during the early days of Apple - and it&#39;s in the actual, real-life garage at Jobs&#39; one-time home in Palo Alto, California.</p> <p>Aaron Sorkin, recently of <em>The Social Network</em> and <em>The Newsroom</em> fame, penned the script, while <em>Slumdog Millionaire</em> director Danny Boyle is helming the film. According to Sorkin, the film won&rsquo;t be a comprehensive overview of Jobs&#39; professional rise - unlike the rough <em>Jobs</em> starring Ashton Kutcher - but rather focus on three key product launches that he oversaw: the Macintosh in 1984, the NeXT computer in 1988, and finally the iPod in 2001.</p> <p>Michael Fassbender is set to play Jobs, so at least the film has an excellent actor to anchor such a unique approach, while Seth Rogen is reportedly playing Wozniak, Jeff Daniels will portray former Apple CEO John Sculley, and Kate Winslet has taken an unspecified role.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.cnet.com/news/lights-camera-apple-filming-starts-for-new-steve-jobs-biopic/">CNET</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-michael-fassbender-play-steve-jobs-full-jurassic-world-trailer-and-gta5-leads-uk">Michael Fassbender to play Steve Jobs</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New Rock Band game teased via survey </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Last week, Harmonix restarted the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/playstation-3/rock-band-releasing-first-new-downloadable-songs-nearly-two-years/news">release of new downloadable songs</a> for <em>Rock Band</em> on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after nearly two years away, leading many to wonder if it was the first step towards properly reviving the franchise with a new-gen console entry.</p> <p>Well, the studio&rsquo;s new survey isn&rsquo;t going to dash those hopes. Musk says it&rsquo;ll probably be built in Texas in the United States, and says he&rsquo;s considering holding annual student pod racing competitions (no, probably not exactly like in <em>Star Wars: Episode I</em>).</p> <p class="p1">Hyperloop is planned to propel people-housing pods through tubes at up to 800mph, and would be able to move passengers between San Francisco and Los Angeles - or London and Edinburgh - in about 30 minutes.
