Soundmagic has made quite the name for itself in the affordable in-ear sector in recent years, and the most recent release of its most budget buds are among its best yet. They’re not quite as design focused as some at this price, but they’re still really well made, with a metallic body and in-line mic/remote, alongside its rather unique twisted cable, which helps with durability. Tangling? Not so much.
If you’re not a fan of the striking red and black version, there are the more strait-laced silver and black or gold and black versions, but all feature Soundmagic’s handy ‘smart mic’ compatibility switch. This allows the E10S’ in-line mic to be used with Android and iOS phones alike, while also making sure they sound their best for your handset too – just check the manual for your phone to see which side you need the switch to be on.
The SoundMagic E10S are headphones designed for a populist audience, so we’re not mad at them for adopting a fairly popular sound signature. This means they go bold in the bass, but not so much that it’s distracting or overpowering. Instead it makes for solid, full-bodied listen, but one that also packs plenty of clarity and expression.
Voices have depth and texture, and instruments have a good amount of subtlety and insight, giving us plenty of detail across the board. You’ll get a touch more refinement at higher prices, of course, but the balance here is well judged, with a treble that never sounds pushed or harsh.
The overall feeling and emotion of a song isn’t lost on the E10S’ either, thanks to a strong handle on timing and dynamics that are talented enough to move between fast and slow and soft and loud with an impressive fluidity. With the E10S, it’s easy to see how SoundMagic has made this budget market its own. Fun and energetic but still packed with detail, they’re a solid go-to at this price.
