The Hasselblad HV is basically a Sony A99 in fancier clothes &ndash; and at over twice the price.</p> <p>The HV&rsquo;s innards and controls are the same the A99&rsquo;s, but it has a more rugged outer shell made of titanium and high-grade aluminium, plus a removeable &ldquo;super resin&rdquo; case which enables it to operate in temperatures between -40 degrees and 80 degrees Celsius. It costs, when bundled with a Sony 24-70mm Carl Zeiss lens, &euro;8,500 (around &pound;7,075), while you could buy the Sony A99 with the same lens for around &pound;3,500.</p> <p>The A99 is an excellent camera as it is, and arguably better-looking in its utilitarian elegance than the rather flouncy HV. But if you have money to burn and a desire to shoot in conditions that would likely kill you, we guess the HV would make a decent alternative.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://luxurylaunches.com/gadgets/hasselblad-hv.php">Luxury Launches</a>]</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/rx100/hasselblad-stellar-compact-camera-beautiful-blinged-out-sony-rx100/news">Hasselblad Stellar compact camera: a beautiful, blinged-out Sony RX100</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony shutters its ebook store </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony has decided to close its online ebook store in the US and Canada as it strives to return to profitability. OK, so many of the movies in it are either (a) tempting but cost money or (b) free but bloody awful, but delve deep enough and you&rsquo;ll unearth the occasional gem: stuff like <em>Night of the Living Dead</em> (see above), <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkYT2_GoV20">His Girl Friday</a></em>, <em><a href="http://youtu.be/6FZRjLPtPLM">Enduring Love</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEaxG7HBK5c">Shopgirl</a></em>.</p> <p>These films are often old, it&rsquo;s true, and some of them have foreign subtitles, but crucially they&rsquo;re free. So no looking that gift horse in the mouth, eh?</p> <p>Another option is <a href="http://www.crackle.com/">Crackle</a>, a service owned by Sony that offers free movies and TV shows to watch through mobile devices, computers, consoles and smart TVs. The selection is a bit more exciting than YouTube&rsquo;s, although you&rsquo;ll have to periodically sit through ads (much like watching a film on TV). At the time of writing Crackle&rsquo;s free films include <em>American Psycho</em>, <em>The Squid and the Whale</em> and <em>Requiem for a Dream</em> and its TV shows include <em>Seinfeld</em> and <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/freemoviesonline">raft of links to free online movies</a> arranged by genre. Some highlights include Kurosawa&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.openculture.com/2012/11/watch_kurosawas_irashomoni_free_online_the_film_that_introduced_japanese_cinema_to_the_west.html"><em>Rashomon</em></a> and Tarkovsky&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PAhbcy8mP4"><em>Andrei Rublev</em></a>, so it&rsquo;s fair to say it might suit cinephiles more than casual viewers. It also includes links to other free movie sites (scroll down the foot of the page).</p> <p>One other alternative? If you&rsquo;re not already a Netflix or Lovefilm Instant subscriber (and haven&rsquo;t been in the past), you can trial both services for a month for free. Plenty to watch there &ndash; although you&rsquo;ll be charged for your second month if you forget to cancel before the trial is over.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/25-fantastic-free-android-games/feature">25 fantastic free android games</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-_f2Enn8x5s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Free Books </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The abundance of out of copyright books means you&rsquo;ll never be short of free stuff to download to your ebook reader or tablet.</p> <p>Open Culture has a <a href="http://www.openculture.com/free_ebooks">nice list of free ebooks</a> with links to book iOS and Kindle-friendly versions of written works such as Dostoevsky&rsquo;s <em>Crime and Punishment</em>, Conan Doyle&rsquo;s <em>The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes</em>, Fitzgerald&rsquo;s <em>The Great Gatsby</em>, Melville&rsquo;s <em>Moby Dick</em> and pretty much everything Shakespeare ever put his quill to. Check your local library&rsquo;s website to find out if they participate.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature">iCheapskate: 25 amazing free games for iPad and iPhone</a></p> <p><em>Main image credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wwarby/4860335535/in/photolist-8puuqx-8puwXg-9kJHTg-8puprR-8purhr-8pust2-8pupSi-8pxDRo-8pxBCE-8puqfH-8purRn-7RE6oi-9kP6MU-9smkim-9sikhH-9smkPh-8gnfoY-aXTBnX-9VyWWc-83FAwd-a5Li5t-8euaEz-fjRuUk-gEs9Qu-8djHu5-8SaMth-8djH15-8djHZL-9EXVZU-9VAQQG-9kKZfe-aeTa3c-9Vz8QK-bpHqBf-7KuATW-7Hhfuh-9kMKy9-9kMMvL-fyyiLe-fyygza-9VMgvz-7xWnPX-fwP73Y-9kJHqK-fwyQZF-a2YtoH-9kP2U7-9kMNwd-bCq8WH-9kMSBb-a32p7J/">William Warby</a></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Free eBook" alt="Free eBook" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Crime-and-punishment.jpg?1390569460" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Ebook Readers iPod and MP3 Music Streaming YouTube Thu, 23 Jan 2014 18:17:26 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1431615 at http://www.stuff.tv British Airways approves use of electronics during take-off and landing http://www.stuff.tv/british-airways-approves-use-electronics-during-take-and-landing/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> From today, you’ll get an extra half an hour’s use of tablets, phones and laptops on BA flights </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="BA 747" alt="BA 747" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ba-jumbo.jpg?1387449376" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>British Airways has become one of the first non-US airlines to approve the use of electronics during take-off and landing.</p> <p>Last month European and US regulators ruled that allowing passengers to use devices like smartphones, e-readers and laptops did not jeopardise flight safety, and several US airlines quickly relaxed their policies.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More time for media </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>BA flight training manager Ian Pringle said that, for a 300-passenger long-haul flight, the relaxed rules will mean around 150 hours of extra viewing, reading or working.</p> <p>One thing you won&rsquo;t be able to do &ndash; at least not yet &ndash; is make calls, send texts or use mobile data on your phone.
