Swapping the frontline for a walk along the thin blue line, <em>Hardline</em> puts you in the shoes of a Miami cop called Nick Mendoza &ndash; although as the story takes you to locations as diverse as the Florida Everglades, the High Desert of California and glitzy Hollywood hills, it&rsquo;ll become clear that things aren&rsquo;t as cut and dried as that.</p> <p>We played two episodes from the game&rsquo;s total of ten: one as a cop on the hunt for a local drug dealer at the very start, the other from towards the end of the game. For starters, a gun isn&rsquo;t your only weapon. As an officer of the law you can press the left shoulder button to flash your badge and shout &lsquo;FREEZE!&rsquo; at any ne&rsquo;er-do-wells you encounter, causing them to reach for the skies.</p> <p>You then have to keep your gun trained on them, moving swiftly from one to another and back again if there&rsquo;s more than one. Leave one out of your sights for too long and they&rsquo;ll take matters into their own hands and open fire. That means you&rsquo;ll have to be very skilled to keep three under control, while four or more will just laugh in your face &ndash; and these guys laugh with their guns, not their mouths. They can be identified using the scanner that Mendoza carries &ndash; a cross between the camera in <em>Far Cry 3</em> and the ESPER system from the old <em>Blade Runner</em> PC point &lsquo;n&rsquo; click. It tags enemies and adds them to your map, highlights alarms and mains power cables, detects and analyses evidence, and even allows you to listen to conversations from afar. It&rsquo;s hardly <em>The Wire</em> but it at least gives the illusion of some police work before the bullets start to fly.</p> <p>Essentially the scanner allows you to plan your approach, and in <em>Hardline</em> there are often numerous ways to tackle each situation. Do you want to lure enemies into isolation by chucking empty bullet cases to catch their attention, before knocking them out cold or hitting them with a taser? Or go in gung-ho with all guns blazing? The possibilities aren&rsquo;t quite endless but it&rsquo;ll take a very long time to try out each one. Primary and secondary weapons can be customised with different scopes, stocks and barrels, while you can select various gadgets to aid your chosen approach, including grappling hooks and ziplines.</p> <p>&ldquo;Most games developers love films but the reality is a videogame is not like a film,&rdquo; <em>Hardline</em>&rsquo;s exec producer Steve Papoutsis tells <em>Stuff</em> after the playthrough. &ldquo;A film is two and a half hours long. Videogames are much, much longer, and they also break down more like TV episodes.&rdquo; Despite this he cites The Joker&rsquo;s bank heist from <em>The Dark Knight</em> as one of the team&rsquo;s many influences, alongside the dialogue style of TV series such as <em>Justified</em>, while the blurred lines between the two sides of the law reminded us of cult cops-gone-bad drama <em>The Shield</em>.</p> <p>In fact, it goes much further than just ziplines and grappling hooks; the codes and conducts of television have been weaved right into the structure of the game. These are more open-world style, finale-type missions with multiple ways to approach them &ndash; think the bank robbery from <em>Heat</em> combined with the outpost raids from <em>Far Cry 3</em>. The one we played involved breaking into a high-rise building and making our way to a vault at the top. We tried to sneak in through the loading bay at the back but on being discovered by a guard had to switch tactic on-the-fly to something a little louder, inviting a stampede of enemies armed with gas grenades and automatic weapons.</p> <p>Many games have claimed to allow multiple styles of play before, but in <em>Hardline</em> it feels like you genuinely have options &ndash; and if one doesn&rsquo;t work you can fall back on the other without being unfairly punished. According to Papoutsis the encounter we played is possible to complete by knocking out just four or five enemies and leaving the rest alone.</p> <p><em>Hardline</em>&rsquo;s differing playing styles don&rsquo;t just affect how many bodies you leave in your wake. There&rsquo;s a scoring system built into the game that keeps track of what kind of player you are: a Protectionist or a Loose Cannon. &ldquo;We have tried diligently to create scenarios that make sense for a cop to use lethal force,&rdquo; explains Papoutsis, &ldquo;but more importantly also give players the choice to use non-lethal force to get the job done. Back at E3 in June we jumped into a game of Blood Money. Playing as the police our team was charged with grabbing bags of cash from the middle of the map and bringing it back to our base. To complicate matters, the crooks were attempting the same thing. Yes, it&rsquo;s essentially capture-the-flag, but in the context of a bank robbery. However, there&rsquo;s a twist &ndash; you can steal money back from your opponent&rsquo;s base.</p> <p>That should mean that individual games will be more nuanced than they are in some multiplayer titles, but we were too busy exploring downtown LA to actually try and win. Though not very large geographically, the map does feature tons of nooks and crannies you can hide in, such as carparks and back alleys, making it an interesting environment to spend time in. The rest of our team seemingly had the same idea, so it&#39;s hardly surprising that we lost.</p> <p>The challenge Visceral Games will face is balancing the desire from <em>Battlefield</em> veterans for huge maps, with environments that make sense in the context and with the tighter engagement distances of this game. While that&rsquo;s disappointing for itchy-trigger-fingered gamers, Papoutsis says it&rsquo;s allowed his team to address some of the issues that arose from the multiplayer beta back in June, from consistency within the storyline to boring stability issues and bugs.</p> <p>Anyone who played that beta will have noticed it felt a lot like <em>Battlefield</em> in fancy dress. Outfits aside it was difficult to pick out of a line-up next to <em>Battlefield 4</em> (or even <em>3</em>), but the single-player game we played had its own very distinct identity.</p> <p>The guns still feel big and heavy, and the environments deteriorate brilliantly when caught in the crossfire (we particularly like the way soft furnishings leave a cloud of feathers hanging in the air when the shooting stops) but Hardline&rsquo;s more memorable characters and new police-specific game mechanics set it apart from both its <em>Battlefield</em> stablemates and other first-person shooters. I&rsquo;d been practicing on a standard TV setup, and I&rsquo;d figured out a relatively death-free way to get through the first segment. I built a noisemaker from spare parts, used it to distract the creature and crept through several rooms before realising I&rsquo;d taken a wrong turn.</p> <p>At that point, I did what I imagine I&rsquo;d do if I really did find myself in a deserted spaceship being hunted by a hissing, invincible nightmare made from knives and acid: I hid under a table and waited to die. In the Oculus version, you have to physically look down to see the sensor. This is horrible, because you&rsquo;re turning your body away from the unsafe space that harbours the claws and teeth from which you&rsquo;re hiding, exposing the top of your head and the back of your neck. It gives you the wrong, prickly feeling you get when you turn your back on an empty doorway into an unlit room. Getting in a cupboard happens a lot in Alien: Isolation, because lockers and cupboards are your main survival tools. Hiding in a locker is the pretty much the only way to share a room with the creature and remain uneaten. Of the few hours I&rsquo;ve spent playing the game, perhaps half of that has been spent in a cupboard.&nbsp;You sneak breathlessly to another cupboard when the coast is clear, then watch in horror as the alien walks in and stands exactly where you were just standing, tasting the volume of air you&rsquo;ve just left. To check the coast is clear, you can lean forward and peer through the slits in the door (you don&rsquo;t want to do this if the alien is right outside), and in the flatscreen version you do this with the sticks. In the Oculus version, you lean your head forward and peer around. After a second go at getting through past the Alien in which I spent an embarrassing amount of time hiding in an air duct before being impaled on the creature&rsquo;s tail, I spoke to Oculus&#39;s Nate Mitchell about how it would look on the final consumer version of the Rift. He mentioned a setup the VR engineers at Valve (several of whom have recently moved over to Oculus) called &lsquo;The Room&rsquo; &ndash; a dizzyingly immersive, almost completely convincing VR environment that is the Oculus benchmark for what they want to achieve with the consumer headset. Personally, for games like<em> Lucky&rsquo;s Tale</em> and <em>Superhot</em>, this kind of holodeck-level immersion sounds amazing.</p> <p>But for hiding in a cupboard waiting to be eviscerated? Play against a mate and you&rsquo;ll soon be sweating to beat their score. With two players currently &ndash;&nbsp;and possibly more to be added, with Xbox One supporting up to 8 controllers, Fru is physical and frantic; perhaps the perfect post-pub activity. Don&rsquo;t be fooled though, this is a tough game to complete. The combination of controlled bodily movement, co-operation and co-ordination with the other player and the standard platforming running and jumping will challenge even the most proficient of gamers.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s not only good to see a core game for Kinect on Xbox One but also a novel combination of controller and camera controls. As with any music game, it&rsquo;s the songs that matter most &ndash;&nbsp;and Fantasia has things covered in that department. From Queen&rsquo;s &ldquo;Bohemian Rhapsody&rdquo; to Bowie&rsquo;s &ldquo;Ziggy Stardust&rdquo; to the White Stripes &ldquo;Seven Nation Army&rdquo; this isn&rsquo;t just for the kids. But Alienware is pressing on undeterred: the Alpha runs Windows, but with a heavily modified UI that boots you straight into Steam&rsquo;s Big Picture Mode. The interface we saw (and, regrettably, weren&rsquo;t allowed to take pictures of) was very simple, very controller-friendly and very console-like. The processor and memory are pretty conventional (and user-upgradeable, a major advantage over sealed-box consoles), with Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 CPU versions available. The graphics, however, are pushed by a custom-built GPU based on Nvidia&rsquo;s new Maxwell architecture. A console you can add more power to? Interesting.</p> <p>Because the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/valve/valves-steam-controller-delayed-2015/news">Steam Controller is delayed</a>, the Alpha comes with an Xbox 360 controller. We&rsquo;d have preferred an Xbox One controller, and in fact the Alpha will work with the Xbonepad, but you&rsquo;ll have to buy one. We played a number of different indie games, which Alienware tells us the Alpha is strongly aimed towards, and on the indies the experience was indistinguishable from another console. More surprising was the preview of <em>Dying Light</em>, which was obviously running at fairly high settings but didn&rsquo;t seem to be giving the Alpha any trouble at all. Unlike <em>Counter-Strike</em>, they&#39;re separated by a wall, and they can see each other. Before each round, the bad guys decide where to hide their hostage by voting for a room. Then the round starts with a preparation stage: by fortifying walls and barricading windows, the terrorists rearrange the map based on where they&rsquo;ve hidden the hostage and what they think the SWAT team will do. Although they took place in the same house, with the same teams, they were entirely different games each time: in one, our team hid the civilian in an upstairs bedroom, fortified walls and barricaded windows (and blew out a wall or two, to allow for better lines of fire) and covered a potential entry-point each.</p> <p>It worked well, with each team-mate taking out one opponent. On our second round we hid our hostage in the basement, sealed up several walls and used the building more like a fortress, but we&rsquo;d neglected a weak point. The SWAT guys blew a hole in the ceiling, poured a load of flashbangs through it and wiped us out.</p> <p>This is real strategy: not just finding the one way to win a fixed map, but constantly having to adapt your plan based on what the other team is doing. And you do know what they&rsquo;re doing, because you have CCTV cameras in the building (if you&rsquo;re a bad guy) and camera drones if you&rsquo;re a SWAT operative. As the SWAT team you get more use of the highly destructible environment, blowing up walls and windows to create access points and shooting holes in things to create lines of sight. The colour palette is very muted, with greys and browns dominating, but the detail in the buildings, uniforms and moustachioed faces is staggering.</p> <p>It had already been surmised that this was predominantly a cover-shooter of a game, and that&rsquo;s borne out in this playthrough, as we move from cover to cover through the war-ravaged streets of London. This is a seriously useful weapon with enough range and accuracy to achieve a headshot on an oblivious guard from a good two-hundred yards away. Or maybe I&rsquo;m just really good.</p> <p>Overwatch dispatched I was then able to use the all-new grapple to rappel up the cliff to one side of the fort, from where it was possible to use the trusty old binoculars to mark a few of the patrolling enemies and the alarm box.</p> <p>Knowing that the destruction of the alarm box would prevent the enemy from calling in reinforcements I moved from roof to roof until I could get a clear shot. Activated with the Square&nbsp;button I could then hold the left trigger to get an aerial view of the battlefield with an area of effect reticule. Find the enemy and pull the right trigger and a large shell is loaded and pinged into the air before hitting the chosen spot in a spectacular, fragmented explosion. For some people that will be absolutely fine, but I was hoping for more &ndash; even the main bad guy (I&#39;m assuming that&#39;s what he is, despite his friendliness towards Ajay in the video) seems a carbon copy of the nutcase from <em>Far Cry 3</em>.</p> <p>We&rsquo;re still a fairly long way off launch, though, and perhaps there are intricacies and deviations in the story and gameplay that simply don&rsquo;t come across from a short play and CGI video. The wall-running and rail-sliding is easy and once you get used to it, it carries you around the area at high speed, allowing you to escape the swinging talons of your enemies.</p> <p>Because you&rsquo;re carried along along at a pace, you can concentrate on swinging your many exciting guns around. There&rsquo;s a touch of <em>Saints Row</em> in these crazy weapons - they fire things like vinyl records or exploding teddy bears - and it&rsquo;s a lot of fun seeing the different ways they dispatch your many, many victims.</p> <p>There was a fair bit of aim assist on the version we played, and we can imagine you&rsquo;d charge through <em>Sunset Overdrive</em> at quite a pace. That&rsquo;s not a bad thing - this is a hyperactive game. White announced back in 2012 that his team at NASA is investigating the possibility of a faster-than-light ship, and the design here would use the rings to help create the warp field.</p> <p>Whether we&rsquo;ll actually see something like this in our lifetime&mdash;and whether NASA will have anywhere near the funding needed to actually bring it to fruition&mdash;remains to be seen, certainly. This year might not have such big news items on tap, but we&rsquo;re interested in seeing and hearing more about the company&rsquo;s Project Morpheus VR headset. However, with Sony having chosen to <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/05/28/watch-playstations-e3-press-conference-in-movie-theaters-nationwide/">broadcast its press conference to over 40 cinemas</a> in the US and Canada, there&#39;s a hint that something major and movie-related could be in the offing too.</p> <p><em>Uncharted 4</em> is sure to be a big focus at the press conference (there are rumours of a three-minute trailer mixing gameplay and cinematics being shown), along with Ready at Dawn&rsquo;s steampunk-tinged shooter, <em>The Order: 1886</em>. Guerrilla Games also has a new IP that could debut at the show, and Sony is likely to loop in some big third-party showings at its press conference&mdash;like <em>Final Fantasy XV</em> or <em>Kingdom Hearts 3</em>.</p> <p>As for the PlayStation Vita&hellip; well, there has to be something, right? While the Project Morpheus VR headset only got a brief mention, the PlayStation Now game streaming service got a US and Canadian release date (31st July for the open beta) and the PlayStation TV box, which features PlayStation Now capabilities as well as allowing you to remotely play PS4 games on a second TV in your home, was confirmed for an autumn 2014 release in Europe and the US (priced at &euro;99 and $99 respectively). There&rsquo;s also a limited edition white PS4 coming in September as part of a bundle with <em>Destiny</em>.</p> <p>On the games front, the title formerly known only as <em>Project Beast</em> was revealed as <em>Bloodborne</em>, and <em>Uncharted 4: A Thief&rsquo;s End</em> got its first trailer.</p> <p><em>Destiny</em>, while not exclusive to the PS4 by any means (it&rsquo;s coming to PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 too), will get plenty of exclusive content on the console &ndash; and PS4 owners will be able to play an alpha version of it from Thursday 12th June. Luckily, the publisher has some big-deal games on the horizon.</p> <p><em><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/microsoft/halo-5-guardians-confirmed-autumn-2015/news">Halo 5: Guardians</a></em> is sure to be a huge focus, though it&rsquo;s still more than a year out. For this year, we&rsquo;ll surely see games like <em>Sunset Overdrive</em> from Insomniac Games, role-player <em>Fable Legends</em>, and transmedia action affair <em>Quantum Break</em>. And rumour has it that <em>Halo 2</em> will get an Anniversary Edition release this year to fill the gap left by <em>Halo 5</em>&rsquo;s delay, so don&rsquo;t be surprised if that pops up as well. In fact, we might find out exactly what the <em>Halo Master Chief Collection</em> is (possibly HD remakes of the first three or four <em>Halo</em> games).</p> <p>Microsoft will probably want to spend a little time on its upcoming original video efforts, as well, but we&rsquo;ve seen when their pressers shift the focus away from games&mdash;it&rsquo;s never pretty (or interesting).</p> <p>Its conference will kick off at 5.30pm UK time on Monday 9th June. And <em>Fable Legends</em>, which supports up to five players (four playing co-op as heroes, the fifth controlling minions and traps from above as an evil overlord). And a new <em>Crackdown</em> game, which looks &ndash; well, like a next-gen version of beloved early Xbox 360 free-roamer <em>Crackdown</em>. And Insomniac&rsquo;s <em>Sunset Overdrive</em>, which blends third-person shooting with free running and a &ldquo;this is so effin&rsquo; xxxtreme!&rdquo; mindset. The Wii U is tanking, and there&rsquo;s little announced on the horizon that&rsquo;s both exclusive and intriguing&mdash;basically <em>Super Smash Bros</em>. for Wii U, <em>Bayonetta 2</em>, and the company&rsquo;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/fully-charged-tech-giants-advocate-net-neutrality-nintendo-makes-its-own-skylanders-and-izitr">NFC Figurine system</a>.</p> <p>So if Nintendo hopes to have a shot at salvaging the console, it needs a hearty showing that spans both innovative new experiences and fan-favorite returns. The <em>Legend of Zelda</em> seems certain to spawn a totally new Wii U entry, and maybe we&rsquo;ll even see <em>Metroid</em>. Perhaps another <em>Mario</em>&mdash;<em>Galaxy 3</em>? Why not?</p> <p><strong>Update 06/06/14:</strong> Nintendo has mentioned that Shigeru Miyamoto, legendary creator of the <em>Mario</em> and <em>Zelda</em> series, is working on a brand new franchise. The company kicked it off with <em>Super Smash Bros.</em> for Wii U (due out by the end of 2014), in which you can use your Mii avatars to do battle &ndash; as well as Nintendo&rsquo;s new NFC-equipped Amiibo figurines.</p> <p>Amiibo figures will work across many different Wii U games (<em>Disney Infinity</em> and <em>Skylanders Trap Team </em>were two others mentioned), and their NFC chip will unlock special features when touched to the Wii U Gamepad. Amiibo figures can also retain information, so your own figure will contain stats from games you have played, and these will translate into stronger and stronger powers as time goes on.</p> <p>Also on show were <em>Bayonetta 2</em> for Wii U (out October 2014), two new <em>Pokémon</em> games for 3DS (both also out October 2014), <em>Zelda</em> x <em>Dynasty Warriors</em> mass battle game <em>Hyrule Warriors</em> for Wii U, <em>Mario Maker</em> (design your own Super Mario Bros. levels) and a tantalising hint of a <em>Star Fox</em> game for Wii U. But the event highlight was undoubtedly the revealing of a new, and as-yet-unnamed, <em>Legend of Zelda</em> game for the Wii U. For the first time, Nintendo has opted for a <em>Skyrim</em>-style open world approach, and Link will be able to go almost anywhere that&rsquo;s visible. There have been claims that the game would offer a narrative campaign designed for co-op before, and the poster shows off four different assassins. Presumably we&#39;ll find out the truth on Monday night.</p> <p><strong>Update 11/06/14:</strong> Ubisoft did indeed show off Assassin&rsquo;s Creed: Unity and it will indeed feature four player co-op. We already know that <em>Star Wars Battlefront</em> (a separate project) from DICE will appear at E3, along with a new PGA Tour golf game&mdash;the first without Tiger Woods in the title.</p> <p>We&rsquo;ll surely see <em>Dragon Age: Inquisition</em>, <em>The Sims 4</em>, <em>EA Sports UFC</em>, <em>Madden NFL 15</em>, and likely <em>FIFA 15 </em>in the mix, but those wild cards are still intriguing. Might we get our first glimpse at the new <em>Mass Effect</em>, as well?</p> <p>The publisher&#39;s press conference, which will take place on Monday 9th June at 8pm UK time, will be broadcast live via ea.com.</p> <p><strong>Update 06/06/14:</strong> A few days ahead of E3, EA has announced <em>Battlefield Hardline</em>, a cops &#39;n&#39; robbers spin-off from the regular <em>Battlefield</em> series &ndash; and a full game in its own right. It&#39;s being developed by Visceral and will be released in October 2014. We&#39;re sure to see more of it at E3. EA has also confirmed that it&#39;ll be releasing the first trailer for <em>FIFA 15</em> on the day of its press conference.</p> <p><strong>Update 09/06/14:</strong> Looks like we&#39;ll be seeing a new <em>Mirror&#39;s Edge</em> game on Monday night. EA posted an image of <em>Mirror&#39;s Edge</em> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mirrorsedge/photos/a.260293260826112.1073741829.155649977957108/259744830880955/?type=1&amp;theater">on Facebook</a> with the hashtag #E32014. Could it be a new instalment of the first-person parkour series for Xbox One and PS4?</p> <p><strong>Update 11/06/14:</strong> Oooh, look up for the first <em>Star Wars: Battlefront</em> trailer &ndash; mostly just DICE talking, but there&#39;s some in-game footage at the end. Luckily, Nintendo had a long-awaited ace up its sleeve: a brand new Legend of Zelda game for Wii U.</p> <p>As seen and said in the clip above, the new Legend of Zelda appears to be an open-world experience, with non-linear dungeons and progression through the adventure. You are recruited by &#39;the Traveller&#39;; a mysterious white, spherical entity who commands you to investigate and destroy these threats before humanity is eradicated.</p> <p>Your first task upon booting up is to choose your class, picking between Titan, Hunter and Warlock. Broadly speaking, these are <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s versions of the standard soldier, stealth and mage classes, and each has a different mix of abilities. Our Titan, for example, could smash the ground and dissolve enemies in a bombastic special move. We teamed up with a Hunter, whose special ability was a flaming pistol that would disintegrate enemies with its solar light. Each of these abilities had to recharge, which took time, so they could be used only fleetingly in combat.</p> <p>After choosing a class, another MMO-style feature presented itself - the character-creation screen. This takes place in Old Russia - a beautiful but decrepit snowy wasteland with gorgeous features such as abandoned space shuttles, rusting industrial complexes and Northern lights punctuating the background.</p> <p>The game quickly tells you to press the DualShock 4&rsquo;s touch pad to bring up the Traveller - the small orb that&rsquo;s recruited you to save the universe. On the most basic level, the Traveller silently points to your objective, but it also vocalises the game&rsquo;s back story in actor Peter &#39;Tyrion Lannister&#39; Dinklage&rsquo;s familiar tones.</p> <p>The Traveller informs you that you&rsquo;re in Russia to find out what The Fallen (a mysterious alien race) are protecting - thankfully, it&rsquo;s only a matter of seconds before you come across one of them in the flesh. When you lock them in your sights, vital information immediately appears onscreen: a number denoting their class (in this case a &ldquo;2&rdquo;), the name of the unit, and a health bar.</p> <p>Doing what comes naturally in a first-person shooter, we begin to fire at the enemy drone with our shotgun - the first shot takes off 75% of its health, the second finishes it off. The brief battle startles another couple of Fallen units, but rather than come straight at us, they demonstrate Bungie&rsquo;s famously high level of artificial intelligence by ducking behind the nearest cover and seemingly communicating with each other before launching a coordinated attack. In fact, if a layman played the game without knowing anything about it, they&rsquo;d probably think it was a <em>Halo</em> sequel of some description.</p> <p>On a basic level, the shotgun boasts many of the same qualities as the Halo equivalent - the same distinctive circular aiming reticule, the wide spread and the slow reload speed. The melee strikes, mapped to the R1 button on PS4, feel powerful and fun to land. There&rsquo;s a shield that recharges whenever you&rsquo;re not getting hit. These are all features reminiscent of the <em>Halo</em> games that Bungie produced, and which defined Xbox consoles more than any other series.</p> <p>Not everything is <em>Halo</em>-inspired though: Bungie has definitely learned a lot from role-playing games too. When you shoot at and hit enemies, numbers denoting the health damage pour out of them like lost blood. Ammunition is relatively sparse, so you have to scavenge around for loot (although far less so than in something like <em>Borderlands 2</em>). You can spawn a vehicle when you&rsquo;re out in the open to travel around quickly. It is perfect timing - the next enemy we meet is a large Fallen Captain equipped with a shield. He would have been quite a challenge to take on alone, but he&#39;s no match for two people working together.</p> <p>Things seem to be going well - we work together for a while without having to communicate verbally, and within the first 10 minutes of hooking up, we&rsquo;ve killed enough Fallen to reach Level 4. As it&rsquo;s a non-conflict zone, the camera shifts into a third-person perspective. The main objective on the first visit is to talk to Commander Zavala and collect your payment for completing the tutorial mission, which then allows you to buy new weapons and vehicles. As the leader of our Fireteam, our ally is forced to join us whenever we leave one location and head to another. We return to the world map and spy a Level 6 mission called &#39;The Devil&rsquo;s Lair&#39;, but as we&#39;re currently stuck on Level 4 we instead head back into Old Russia for a Level 4 Exploration mission around the Cosmodrome. </p> <p>In this mode, you have to look out for beacons dotted around the world, then scan them and follow the mission to receive a reward. This could be to kill a certain number of enemies, find something hidden, or recover treasures from around the map. These quests are also interrupted with random events that you can choose to engage with or ignore, such as a contingency of Fallen landing and you only having a limited amount of time to kill them.</p> <p>This more free-form gameplay is generally fun, but it does show up one element of <em>Destiny</em>&rsquo;s structure that could frustrate, and that&rsquo;s the &#39;grind&#39;. It&rsquo;s something that MMO players will be familiar with; fighting off loads of enemies just to level up your character so that they&rsquo;re powerful enough to engage in the next part of the story. The skirmishes are great, especially one fight against a giant Noble Devil Walker, but there&#39;s a lot of killing and fetching to do before we reach Level 6.</p> <p>It&#39;s here that the game&rsquo;s difficulty ramps up significantly, too. We come across some incredibly strong regenerating Hive Knight enemies that two people simply can&#39;t kill, so we&#39;re left with no other option but to desperately run past the gangs of enemies in a cowardly attempt to reach the objective. The tactic works, but it doesn&rsquo;t feel particularly fair or satisfying. From the alpha we can see that there will be six main modes in the multiplayer game, although only one is available at this time. It&rsquo;s called Control, and seems to be a game mode where 6 vs 6 players fight for control of strategic battle zones.</p> <p>There are a number of rewards available in the Crucible part of the game, including gear and reputation points. But while all this was active in the alpha, it needed 12 people to play, and the number of people online at the same time as us maxed out at about three. Both Microsoft and Sony initially talked up their consoles as being the centre of an entertainment hub; swiping through TV stations with Kinect, game-sharing on PS4, and so forth. But spec up a current gaming PCs and you have something that&#39;s easily on par with the PS4 and Xbox One on raw graphical grunt. And almost all of the non-exclusive titles are making their way over to the PC; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Far Cry 4 and GTA V are all releasing on PC alongside the console versions.</p> <p>PC specs are as good as you&#39;re prepared to shell out for; upgradeability means that you can start small and upgrade as cashflow allows, and with Steam&#39;s Big Picture mode, you finally have a PC gaming interface that sits happily in your living room. The launch of Valve&#39;s Steam Machine project may have been delayed, but then, PCs are an open platform, and if you want to bung SteamOS on your machine, there&#39;s nothing stopping you &ndash; once it launches, of course.</p> <p>The library of titles available on PC includes all the big cross-platform franchises, plus some exclusives like the expansive Star Citizen and Syndicate throwback <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/satellite-reign-awesome-syndicate-sequel-we-shouldve-had/feature" target="_blank">Satellite Reign</a> &ndash; both of which employ the interesting game mechanics that the big console-exclusive titles seem to shy away from. There&#39;s also a vibrant indie scene on PC that the consoles are only just catching up to.</p> <p>I could be wrong; Sunset Overdrive might turn out to be the best thing I&#39;ve ever played. With the original game engines remaining untouched, everything will be just as manic as you remember, with shiner graphics to boot. We. Cannot. Microsoft has played it safe by giving gamers what they cave the most. An open world (or rather, open worlds, because it&rsquo;s set across many planets) first-person shooter spliced with an MMO, it seems, er, destined to be one of the first games that actually leverages the potential of next-gen consoles.</p> <p>Now, we know what you&rsquo;re thinking: <em>Destiny</em> is a multi-platform game coming to Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3 as well as PS4. But Sony has secured a truckload of exclusive content for the PS4 version, starting with the first-look alpha version of the game, which will be available from this Thursday 12th June until the end of the coming weekend. Then there&rsquo;s the beta, which is coming to PS4 first from 17th July. And on launch day there&rsquo;ll be a bunch of weapons, armour, gear, spaceships and a map, all exclusive to PS4.</p> <p>There&rsquo;ll also be a special <em>Destiny</em> PlayStation 4 bundle featuring a white console and a copy of the game.
