Duracell Instant Power Charger review

It's not as fluffy as the Duracell Bunny, but the Instant Power Charger does promise that your gadgets will go on...and on...

We’ve all been there. Out on the road, on the train, stuck in a lift – well, not so much of the last, unless you’re really unlucky – and the battery dies in your phone or MP3 player. No calls, no music, no web surfing. Boo.

The Duracell Instant Power Charger is a lithium-ion power booster that’s specifically aimed at getting you out of those nasty situations.

It can also help keep your music and movies going on those long transatlantic flights.

Taking charge

Getting power into the Instant Charger itself is by the simple means of USB – there’s a mini USB socket on the device’s top and a standard mini-USB-to-USB cable is used to connect it to your computer.

It takes just over an hour for a full charge, whereby the orange light turns green. Sadly no mains charger is supplied, but it’s an easy and cheap enough task to get a standard mains-to-USB adaptor.

Charging your mobile device is simply the opposite. On the other end of the Instant Charger is a full-size USB socket that’ll accept an iPod cable and works with most mobile phones. Once you’re hooked up, just flick the Duracell’s on/off switch.

Give us a boost

We tried charging an HTC Hero and got the battery half topped up with a full blast from the Instant Power Charger in around an hour.

It managed to whack an extra couple of hours’ playback from an iPod Classic, so will offer an even bigger boost to the solid-state MP3 players out there.

Don’t forget to charge

A problem with many rechargeable batteries is that they lose charge when left for any length of time. Thankfully, the Instant Charger didn’t suffer too badly from this, and managed to give a decent top-up even after a week.

That’s not to say you won’t have to make sure it’s charged once in a while. Luckily it can be reused hundreds of times before it’ll give up the ghost.
