Well those people are wrong.</p> <p>Until such time as smartphones have proper zooms, optical viewfinders, bigger sensors and many other standard digital compact tricks, they&#39;ll be neither as versatile or as useful as a compact.</p> <p>And there&#39;s no finer example than the Sony RX100 III, a camera that offers DSLR-rivalling stills and video performance, possesses brilliant features and can fit comfortably in an average-sized pocket.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/marc-mclaren" title="View user profile.">Marc McLaren</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Winner: Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If smartphones killed the compact camera then Sony never got the memo, because the RX100 III is the finest pocketable snapper we&rsquo;ve ever seen. The lens is nice and wide, it feels sturdy and solid in the hand, and the 1in, 20MP sensor is big enough to handle low-light situations far more capably than any phone.
And all in a package that actually takes up less pocket than some
of the latest gigantaphones.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-rx100-iii/review">Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III review</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cameras/top-ten">These are the 10 best compact cameras in the world</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Cyber-shot RX100 III" alt="The 8 best compact cameras of the year - Stuff Gadget Awards 2014" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/stuff-gadget-awards-2014-best-compact-camera-sony-cybershot-rx100-iii.jpg?1418393336" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Runner-up: Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-ii/review">Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II</a> is the kind of camera that sits squarely between smartphone and DSLR and thumbs its nose at both of them. Viewfinders come into their own on sunny days and in situations where you don&rsquo;t want a blazingly bright screen ruining the ambience (a quiet, dimly-lit concert hall, for instance) and, as we&rsquo;re ever fond of pointing out, using a viewfinder makes you hold a camera up to your face, which keeps it steadier than holding it out in front of you.</p> <p>Also on board are GPS and Wi-Fi, plus NFC to make linking up your smartphone and the camera a little less of a hassle. And lo and behold: after installing Panasonic&rsquo;s Android app and tapping our Nexus 4 on the side of the TZ60 a couple of times, we were paired up. The app allows you to remotely shoot stills and video, adjust settings and zoom, as well as share them from a gallery page. It&rsquo;s nothing revolutionary, but it does work as advertised &ndash; which is more than can be said for most Wi-Fi-equipped cameras.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s a built-in flash, naturally, but unlike the Sony HX60V there&rsquo;s no hot shoe for mounting more powerful external flash guns and other accessories.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="That&#039;s a viewfinder on the upper left, and it&#039;s very handy" alt="That&#039;s a viewfinder on the upper left, and it&#039;s very handy" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/panasonic-tz60-rear-hand.jpg?1416308581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Panasonic Lumix TZ60 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 18.1MP 2/3in MOS</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 24-720mm (30x optical zoom)</p> <p><strong>Max. aperture</strong>: f/3.3-f/8</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong>: 100-6400</p> <p><strong>Image stabilisation</strong>: Optical</p> <p><strong>Video</strong>: AVCHD (up to 1920 x 1080 @ 50fps) or MP4 (up to 1920 x 1080 @ 25fps)</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 920,000-dot LCD</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>: Electronic 200,000-dot</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, NFC, GPS, USB 2.0, Micro HDMI

It&rsquo;s a big ol&rsquo; zoom indeed. Take a look above and you&rsquo;ll see two shots taken from the same spot, one at the widest setting and one at the tightest 30x setting. That gives the TZ60 a huge amount of flexibility &ndash; it&rsquo;s a camera (like the HX60V, which also sports a 30x optical zoom) that can swiftly adapt to most situations.</p> <p>Image quality varies quite drastically depending on how far you&rsquo;re zooming, however. At the wide end colours are richer, detail is sharper and pictures are more accurately exposed, while at the far reaches of the zoom the TZ60 can struggle to deliver great results, particularly in tricky lighting situations: we noticed some images were over or under-exposed and others quite blurry. That&rsquo;s going to happen occasionally with most superzoom cameras, but in our opinion the HX60V does a slightly (but noticeably) better job than this camera at the telephoto end of things.</p> <p>In good lighting, however, and with a steady hand, the TZ60 can produce impressively detailed shots at its most extreme zoom &ndash; take a look at the above shot of the Crystal Palace transmission mast, taken from a few miles away in Bromley, for an example.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lumix-fz200/panasonic-lumix-fz200/review">Panasonic Lumix FZ200 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At extreme zoom, the TZ60&#039;s images can look a tad washed out" alt="At extreme zoom, the TZ60&#039;s images can look a tad washed out" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pan-tz60-test-crow.jpg?1416308581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="At wider angles, colours are fuller and richer, and detail is sharper" alt="At wider angles, colours are fuller and richer, and detail is sharper" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pan-tz60-test-tree-and-tower.jpg?1416308581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The macro mode can shoot objects almost touching the lens" alt="The macro mode can shoot objects almost touching the lens" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pan-tz60-test-macro.jpg?1416308581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="In good lighting objects can look quite sharp and detailed at full 30x zoom" alt="In good lighting objects can look quite sharp and detailed at full 30x zoom" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pan-tz60-test-crystal-palace.jpg?1416308581" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Video quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The TZ60 offers a choice of video formats: AVCHD (more suited to playback on your TV) or MP4 (better for PC playback). These retro-influenced cameras have generally been well built and glorious to look at, and the X30 is no exception.</p> <p>Resembling something a Gitanes-puffing Parisian louche might whip out of his well-tailored jacket pocket in the 1960s, the camera has a leather-like textured plastic grip wrapped around its middle, with almost all the rest of the exterior made of full metal (our review sample is silver and black, but there&rsquo;s also an all-black option). It&rsquo;s reassuringly solid in your hand, albeit large and weighty for a compact, and thoughtful touches like the manually removeable lens cap and metal shutter button give the X30 something special. A little je ne sais quoi, as our 1960s Frenchman might say.</p> <p>The size and bulk might be an issue for some. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-rx100-iii/review">Sony RX100 III</a>, for instance, has a larger sensor than the X30 but its tiny size means it can be slipped in a pocket easily. It&rsquo;s not the best camera around, though, and at times we found the X30 suffered from similar issues to its predecessor, such as inaccurate metering and slightly odd reproduction of green.</p> <p>But as you can see from the sample images above, photos are sharp and detailed, with decent colour and low noise. The lens offers a decent 4x optical zoom range (you zoom manually, by twisting the lens, just like in the olden times) and the autofocus is acceptably quick and accurate (if not outstandingly so).</p> <p>Videos can be captured at 1080p quality and at up to 60fps, and are saved in the .MOV format. They&rsquo;re of a similarly impressive quality to the X30&rsquo;s still images, and stereo microphones on the front give you decent two-channel sound.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-powershot-g1-x-mark-ii/review">Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Fujifilm X30 sample image" alt="Fujifilm X30 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fujifilm-x30-sample-cows.jpg?1415862244" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Fujifilm X30 sample image" alt="Fujifilm X30 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fujifilm-x30-sample-high-st.jpg?1415862244" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Fujifilm X30 sample image" alt="Fujifilm X30 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fujifilm-x30-sample-goose.jpg?1415862244" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Fujifilm X30 sample image" alt="Fujifilm X30 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fujifilm-x30-sample-macro.jpg?1415862244" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Film simulation modes </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As ever, Fujifilm has included its film simulation settings, which tweak images in-camera to, in theory, make them look as though they&rsquo;ve been snapped on famed analogue film types of yesteryear. Just that it needs fixing. Sadly, this isn&rsquo;t unusual with cameras equipped with Wi-Fi &ndash; in fact it&rsquo;s the norm &ndash; and from the snappers we&rsquo;ve recently reviewed, we can only say that Sony&rsquo;s wireless implementation works consistently well.</p> <p>The new OLED electronic viewfinder fares much better. It doesn&rsquo;t create the &ldquo;looking through a window&rdquo; effect of the EVFs found on pricier cameras, but it does offer an excellent alternative to the rear screen when it comes to composing and framing your images. And holding a camera up to your face keeps it steadier than holding it out in front of you, which helps your shots remain sharper.</p> <p>The lens ring is another useful addition. Set it to control a certain function &ndash; aperture, ISO, film simulation mode etc. &ndash; and it takes a bit of trickiness out of making adjustments.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/samsung-galaxy-camera-2/review">Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The X30&#039;s screen is bigger and sharper than the X20&#039;s" alt="The X30&#039;s screen is bigger and sharper than the X20&#039;s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fujifilm-x30-hand.jpg?1415862244" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fujifilm X30 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 2/3in 12MP CMOS</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 4x optical zoom</p> <p><strong>Max. aperture</strong>:&nbsp;f/2.0-2.8</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong>: 100-12800</p> <p><strong>Video</strong>: 1080p MP4 @ 60fps</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in 920,000-dot tilting LCD</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>: 0.39in 2,360,000-dot OLED</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, micro HDMI, micro USB 2.0, mic/shutter release</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 118.7 x 71.6 x 60.3mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 423g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Fujifilm X30 verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Having recently reviewed the Sony RX100 III, it&rsquo;s hard to recommend the X30 over it if you&rsquo;re looking for a compact camera in the higher end range &ndash; the Sony is smaller and offers better image quality and features. class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The most arresting change is the addition of an electronic viewfinder, which pops up from the left side of the RX100 III&rsquo;s top plate. Sony has done a fantastic job of cramming an EVF into such a tiny camera and, while it&rsquo;s not particularly large, bright or detailed (at least in comparison to the class-leading EVFs on bigger Sony cameras such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-a7r/review">A7R</a>) it&rsquo;s likely to prove invaluable to most users.</p> <p>Why? Because it means you don&rsquo;t have to solely compose your shots using the screen anymore. On bright, sunny days, the ability to frame photos using a well-shaded viewfinder is something owners of the previous RX100s might miss, but it&rsquo;s here. Also, holding the camera up to your eye keeps it steadier than holding it out in front of you, which means sharper images.</p> <p>There is a screen, of course, but this time the 3in LCD is more dextrous than before, flipping up a full 180 degrees in a move that selfie addicts will find eminently useful.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a brand new lens on board, a Zeiss-designed 2.9x optical zoom that starts at 24mm equivalent rather than the older models&rsquo; 28mm &ndash; that&rsquo;s a nice slice of extra wideness that&rsquo;ll help with landscape and interior shots where you want to fit in as much as possible. The lens doesn&rsquo;t offer quite as much reach at the telephoto end, however (70mm as opposed to 100mm).</p> <p>The final big change is the inclusion of the firm&rsquo;s latest BIONZ X image processor, which Sony says improves noise reduction in high ISO shots and makes your photos and videos look richer, cleaner and more natural.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The pop-up electronic viewfinder is a little engineering marvel" alt="The pop-up electronic viewfinder is a little engineering marvel" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-rx100-iii-evf.jpg?1415786739" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Photo quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That brings us nicely to a discussion of the RX100 III&rsquo;s image quality which, it has to be said, is pretty much bulletproof for a compact camera (and yes, we know what you&rsquo;re thinking: most compact cameras don&rsquo;t cost &pound;700).</p> <p>The superb lens and physically large sensor lay down the foundations by (a) sucking in more light during short shutter speeds, which means you don&rsquo;t need long exposures in lower light situations; and (b) allowing you to achieve a narrow depth of field (and hence bokeh eye candy) in situations where most compacts would keep everything in the frame in sharp focus.</p> <p>The RX100 III is a monster when it comes to low light conditions, snapping clear, sharp images in situations in which 95 percent of cameras its size would struggle to deliver anything usable at all. And Sony&rsquo;s noise reduction tech plays as big a part as the lens/sensor combination here, we suspect &ndash; it does a stellar job of cleaning up grain without softening the overall picture.</p> <p>The camera is also a dab hand at trickily lit scenes thanks to a deft, idiot-proof HDR mode, which we found rendered all but the most dynamic scenes detailed and rich in both light and dark areas. Oh, and autofocus is incredibly fast and accurate too.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&#39;s Photography Guide: What is bokeh and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1800" title="The image was taken handheld in a darkened room" alt="The image was taken handheld in a darkened room" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-rx100-iii-neko-dark.jpg?1415786739" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony RX100 III test shot" alt="Sony RX100 III test shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-rx100-iii-test-dof.jpg?1415786739" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony RX100 III test shot" alt="Sony RX100 III test shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-rx100-iii-test-macro.jpg?1415786739" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="800" title="Sony RX100 III test shot" alt="Sony RX100 III test shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-rx100-iii-test-trees.jpg?1415786739" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony RX100 III tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 20.1MP 1.0&rdquo; Exmor R CMOS</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 24-70mm Zeiss (2.9x optical zoom)</p> <p><strong>Max. aperture</strong>: f/1.8-2.8</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong>: 125-26000</p> <p><strong>Image stabilisation</strong>: Optical</p> <p><strong>Video</strong>: AVCHD (up to 1920 x 1080 @ 50fps) or MP4 (up to 1440 x 1080 @ 25fps)</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 1,228,800-dot 180-degree tilting LCD</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>: Pop-up electronic viewfinder</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, NFC, USB 2.0, Micro HDMI</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 101.6 x 58.1 x 38.3mm

There&rsquo;s a purpose to this, too: the lens ring twists and can be used to manually control select functions such as focus, zoom and aperture.</p> <p>The camera&rsquo;s not so lightweight that you won&rsquo;t know you&rsquo;re carrying it, but the trade-off is that it has a full metal body that looks great and feels solid in your hand. on the market: its armoured hide means it can withstand a two-metre fall onto a hard surface. We dropped it onto a hardwood floor to test this and it suffered no ill effects bar a small chip in the paintwork &ndash; the locking latch on the battery/card door ensures that it won&rsquo;t pop open in the impact too.</p> <p>It doesn&rsquo;t stop there. Rubber sealing around the buttons and battery/SD card hatch makes the AW120 fully dust-proof and waterproof to a depth of 18m. While we didn&rsquo;t take it that far below the surface, we did subject the camera to a fairly rigorous bout of rinsing in the dishwasher. After eight solid minutes of intense spraying, it emerged in perfect working order (not to mention markedly cleaner).</p> <p>Finally, Nikon claims the camera can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees celsius. Even British summertime and the snowcapped peak of French mountain l&rsquo;Aiguille du Midi couldn&rsquo;t furnish us with that, but we did whack it in the freezer (substantially colder than -10, it should be said) for a few minutes. Again, it emerged unscathed.</p> <p>Aside from its powers of survival, the AW120 impresses with its size and weight: it&rsquo;s very pocket friendly, and will slip into jeans or a jacket without causing any discomfort.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Nikon AW120 is one tough cookie" alt="The Nikon AW120 is one tough cookie" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-stones_0.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="All buttons and ports are fully sealed against dust and water" alt="All buttons and ports are fully sealed against dust and water" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-stones-rear.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Image quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Rugged compact cameras aren&rsquo;t generally the go-to snappers for people seeking excellent photo and video quality. There&rsquo;s generally a feeling of compromise when you buy one: you&rsquo;re paying for a decent quality camera that&rsquo;s nigh-on impossible to break rather than a camera built primarily for superb picture quality. They&rsquo;re tough, but the tradeoffs are that the sensors are small, the lenses don&rsquo;t offer much in the way of zoom, the controls are somewhat stripped back etc. etc.</p> <p>The AW120 doesn&rsquo;t do much to dispel this feeling. While we found it offered the best still images out of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/unbreakables-rugged-cameras-put-test/feature">the three tough cameras we recently reviewed</a>, it won&rsquo;t outperform or match compacts like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-hx60v/review">Sony HX60V</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-x20/review">Fujifilm X20</a> (try dropping those in the bath, though). We found the metering can be a little off when you zoom in, and the low light performance (sans flash) is a tad disappointing, even with the aperture fully open at f/2.8 (while this setting is only available with the lens fully zoomed out, it&rsquo;s a sizeable upgrade from the AW110, which had a maximum aperture of f/3.9).</p> <p>That said, it has a decent (for a rugged camera) x5 optical zoom range and photos and videos taken in good lighting look lovely: detailed and clean. The HDR mode works well in tricky scenes where there&rsquo;s both bright and dark areas to expose, and full HD 1080p videos are crisp and smooth. Basically, it&rsquo;s an above average compact, and that&rsquo;s about as good as you can expect in a ruggedised model.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/unbreakables-rugged-cameras-put-test/feature">The Unbreakables: rugged cameras put to the test</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1600" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-main.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-1.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-2.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4608" height="3456" title="Nikon AW120 macro sample shot" alt="Nikon AW120 macro sample shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-macro-test.JPG?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GP-Yes and Why-oh-Wi-Fi </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the main differences between the AW120 and its predecessor the AW110 is a bevy of additional sensors. The AW110 had GPS and could automatically tag photos and videos with location data, but the AW120 adds an electronic compass (so you&rsquo;ll know which way you were facing as well as where you were when you took that shot), Points of Interest (which it plots for you on a viewable map) and functionality for measuring water depth, water pressure, altitude and atmospheric pressure. That might sound overkill, not to mention a surefire way to drain the battery, but we&rsquo;re certain that a lot of adventurous shutterbugs will see them as useful. And if you&rsquo;re not one of them, you can simply turn them all off.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect wirelessly to a computer or mobile device. Now, Wi-Fi on compact cameras tends to be a bit hit-and-miss, and that&rsquo;s the case here &ndash; at least as far as our experience goes. The AW120 did not want to connect to anything we tried to pair it with, and after 10 minutes of poring over the menu settings to try and work out how to remedy that we gave up in a rage. It&rsquo;s a good thing this camera is difficult to break, because we feel a lot of potential Wi-Fi users are going to be hurling it across the room after similar experiences.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The maps feature Points of Interest as well as geotagging" alt="The maps feature Points of Interest as well as geotagging" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-gps.jpg?1415788867" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon Coolpix AW120 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 16MP CMOS</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong>: 125-1600 (3200 and 6400 in Auto mode)</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 5x optical zoom f/2.8-4.9</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 921,000-dot LCD</p> <p><strong>Video</strong>: 1080p @ 30/25fps, 1080i @ 60/50fps</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, USB, micro HDMI</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 110 x 66 x 26mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 558g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Useful USB charging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The AW120 is USB rechargeable (another upgrade over its predecessor), which will mean you can more easily top up the battery in the field (solar chargers etc. will work), features an acceptably sharp screen and offers a potentially useful (if unintuitive) motion control system which could come in handy when you&rsquo;re wearing thick gloves.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon Coolpix AW120 verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the AW120 is far from a perfect compact camera, it&rsquo;s important to remember that it&rsquo;s going after a different market than the image quality-focussed premium point-and-shoots that currently populate our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cameras/top-ten">Top Ten</a>. Oh, and let&#39;s not forget the Wi-Fi.</p> <p><strong>Tough or guff?</strong><br />The bad news is that, predictably, the Wi-Fi&rsquo;s a complete dog &ndash; even after downloading Nikon&rsquo;s dedicated app to our smartphone, we couldn&rsquo;t get the camera to so much as attempt a connection. GLONASS GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC make it one of the smarter ruggedised models on the market.</p> <p><strong>Tough or guff?</strong><br />As with its rivals, the FT5 sailed (or swam, in one case) through all of our trials with ease. Dropping, freezing, soaking &ndash; nothing impacted performance or left a mark on the camera&rsquo;s hardy hide. The NFC and Wi-Fi didn&rsquo;t work properly (we&#39;ve now reviewed around a dozen Wi-Fi cameras and we&rsquo;re honestly more surprised when NFC and Wi-Fi <em>do</em> work), but we managed to manually connect the FT5 and our phone &ndash; this allows you to transfer images and control basic camera operations remotely. Image quality-wise, the FT5 sits between the other models: it&rsquo;s a little better than the Canon in low light, but showed slightly less sharpness than the Nikon.</p> <p><strong>Stuff says</strong> <strong>✭✭✭✭✩</strong><br />A solid performer that excels at video &ndash; and at not getting broken.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT5 " alt="The best rugged and waterproof cameras - tested" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/panasonic-ft5-stones.jpg?1407855579" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT5 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 16.1MP<br /><strong>Zoom</strong>: 4.6x optical<br /><strong>Max. video quality</strong>: 1080p at 50fps<br /><strong>GPS/Wi-Fi</strong>: Yes/Yes (with NFC)<br /><strong>Dimensions/weight</strong>: 109.2 x 67.4 x 28.9mm/220g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: who is king of the hardnuts? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We have to say, we were quite disappointed to find out just how tough these cameras are &ndash; we had our fingers crossed for some spectacular breakages.</p> <p>(Un)fortunately, none of the snappers was going to accommodate us, and they all came across as so hardy that, in our opinion, if you destroy one of these you only have yourself to blame. That said, our time with the cameras suggested that the Panasonic FT5 was the best for video capture and the Nikon AW120 the best for stills. The wider aperture not only makes the potential shutter speed even faster &ndash; and thus pictures even sharper and less noise-plagued &ndash; it also allows you to achieve a narrow depth of field more easily, making this one of the best compacts around for taking photos and videos with bokeh. And the lens&rsquo; rounded aperture blades make that bokeh look lovely and smooth, as you can see from the above shot. The new processor also helps speed up operation slightly. Oh, and you can still shoot RAW if you wish, which&rsquo;ll please enthusiasts who love to tweak images in Photoshop.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14272542408/in/set-72157645200788486/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>The G1 X Mark II does however feel a little outmoded in terms of its video capture capabilities. It can capture 1080p, 720p and VGA video, but only at 30fps, and the lack of an external microphone input means you have to rely on the built-in stereo mics &ndash; not exactly a sign that Canon is taking video too seriously here. While viewfinders might seem like a relic from photography&rsquo;s analogue days, there are times when they&rsquo;re damn near essential. Framing a shot on the Mark II&rsquo;s LCD screen is fine when you&rsquo;re indoors or at night, but on a blazing sunny day it&rsquo;s hard to make out what&rsquo;s being displayed on there. A viewfinder eliminates that issue, and we were surprised to see neither the original model&rsquo;s simple optical or (even better) a new OLED electronic viewfinder here. Canon sells one of the latter as an optional accessory &ndash; but it&rsquo;s going to cost you another &pound;250 on top of the Mark II&rsquo;s &pound;730 price. Bad move, Canon.</p> <p>The screen, however, is excellent when the conditions are right. At 3in it&rsquo;s the same size as the G1 X&rsquo;s, but slightly clearer thanks to a higher pixel count. It&rsquo;s also touch-sensitive (something that&rsquo;s far from essential on a camera, but occasionally handy here for quickly setting a focus area) and can be twisted to face almost any direction.</p> <p>The control layout has been rejigged, and the camera has not one but two rings around the lens. One (which turns smoothly) is always set to control manual focus, while the other (which moves in clicky increments) is customisable and can be set to control various functions including aperture, exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity. These will come in really handy for shooters who want to manually change settings quickly.</p> <p>Another tangible improvement is to autofocus, which feels a lot brisker and more accurate thanks the big increase in AF areas (Canon claims it&rsquo;s up to 42 percent quicker).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The flexible screen can even turn 180 degrees for selfie purposes" alt="Canon G1 X Mark II review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/canon-g1x-mkii-hand-back.jpg?1415859733" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Canon G1 X Mark II tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 13.1MP CMOS</p> <p><strong>Max ISO</strong>: 100-12800</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 5x optical zoom f/2.0-3.9</p> <p><strong>Image stabilisation</strong>: Optical</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>: optional extra</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 1,040,000-dot touch-sensitive LCD</p> <p><strong>Video formats</strong>: MP4/1080p, 720p and 480p at 30fps</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, NFC,</p> <p><strong>GPS</strong>: via connected mobile phone</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 116.3 x 74 x 66.2mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 558g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wi-Fi: Connect poor </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Does NFC stand for &ldquo;no fanks, chum&rdquo;? However, a quick glance through Flickr or Facebook should demonstrate that people still struggle to understand what makes a good monochromatic photo. But Stuff is here to help: we&rsquo;ve put together this short guide to try and help you grasp the black and white basics.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Contrast is key </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Because black and white photos remove colour, the viewer&rsquo;s attention is focussed on other things. Sharpness, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">depth of field</a> and composition are of course important, but contrast is arguably the key factor in how much impact a black and white photograph holds.</p> <p>In most black and white images, you&rsquo;ll be looking for big contrasts between the darkest and lightest areas of the image. That&rsquo;s where the drama comes from. If your original photo doesn&rsquo;t have as much contrast as you&rsquo;d like, get it into Photoshop or another editing app and adjust the settings. It&rsquo;s not a major upgrade, in all honesty, but we won&rsquo;t gripe too much about it not being the latest 4.4 KitKat version of Google&rsquo;s operating system.</p> <p>Why not? Well, this isn&rsquo;t a smartphone, and 4.3 runs the necessary photo, video and social media apps well enough, while also allowing you to listen to music (there&rsquo;s a 3.5mm headphone socket on board), play games and so on. The idea of playing games on a camera is odd, we know, but you can fire up <em>Threes!</em> or <em>Candy Crush Saga</em> if you want and they&rsquo;ll run as well as on any phone.</p> <p>The photo app compatibility is the draw here though: as with the first Galaxy Camera, you can easily snap a good quality photo or video and upload it immediately to services such as Instagram and Facebook via Wi-Fi &ndash; and have it automatically backup to Dropbox (you get 50GB of free storage with the camera). The difference here? Not much, again. The Galaxy Camera 2 doesn&rsquo;t offer any connectivity options its predecessor didn&rsquo;t (both have a/b/g/n 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth 4.0), but it does feature a very slightly faster processor: a quad-core 1.6GHz CPU as opposed to a quad-core 1.4GHz CPU.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a slightly bigger battery aboard, which Samsung claims delivers around 400 shots per charge versus 340 on the first Galaxy Camera. We found it lasted a good three or four days of moderate use before we felt it needed recharging.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:</strong> <strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lytro/lytro-introduces-illum-pro-level-light-field-camera/news" target="_blank">Meet the Lytro Illum - the pro-level camera that lets you refocus after you shoot</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apps galore on the Samsung Galaxy Camera 2&#039;s home screens" alt="Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-camera-2-android.jpg?1398825798" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Having Instagram on a &#039;proper&#039; camera: so wrong, but so right" alt="Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-camera-2-instagram.jpg?1398825798" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Selfie help </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 720p, 4.8in TFT display is the same as that on the original Galaxy Camera. The touch sensitivity works as well as could be expected, and overall it&rsquo;s a decent, if unremarkable display. It&rsquo;s a move that&rsquo;s somewhat out of character for a company such as Samsung, which thrives on innovating faster than most of its rivals.</p> <p>If you own the first Galaxy Camera, there&rsquo;s absolutely no point in replacing it with this one, and the &pound;400 price tag also seems steep for those looking to buy their first Android compact. The sharing and backup features remain impressive, but the photo quality needed a bump &ndash; and it hasn&rsquo;t got it here.</p> <p>For the same price you could buy Canon&#39;s excellent pro
