Using the app, you enter the type of plants you need watered and their locations in your garden. Droplet, which hooks directly up to a normal hosepipe, then uses weather and soil data to determine how much water each plant needs and the best time to douse it. Each unit can spray a jet up to 30 feet, so depending on the size of your garden you may need only one.</p> <p>Its makers say it&rsquo;ll save the average user US$263 (around &pound;150) on water bills per year, not to mention the time that person would usually spend in the garden using a hose or fiddling with their normal sprinkler.</p> <p>The Droplet unit isn&rsquo;t particularly cheap at US$300 (&pound;175), but if the savings claims are true it&rsquo;ll have paid for itself in a little over a year. US residents can pre-order it now at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Droplet-Robotics-DR01-Sprinkler/dp/B00IORFJBG/">Amazon.com</a>, but there&rsquo;s no word as yet on a launch in the UK. underway in just five years.</p> <p>NASA&rsquo;s current plan is to launch an Asteroid Redirect Mission in 2019, which will include a capture vehicle that can either collect a small asteroid in open space or otherwise snag a sample from a larger space rock. Either way, the sample will need to be less than 10 metres in size. After that, NASA&rsquo;s plan is to redirect the asteroid into orbit around the Earth, at which point astronauts will be able to take samples and study it (as visualized above).&nbsp;</p> <p>Sounds like science fiction, right? If NASA has its way, it&rsquo;ll be science fact before long. The benefit is reportedly twofold, as it will help NASA better understand how to deal with potential hazardous near-Earth objects in the future, and also further its plans to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/press/2014/june/nasa-announces-latest-progress-upcoming-milestones-in-hunt-for-asteroids/#.U6eVIdzhiCb">NASA</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/06/22/nasa-asteroid-mission-launches-2019/">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/just-because-they-could-–-asteroid-mining/news">Just because they could &mdash; asteroid mining</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nest acquires Dropcam for US$555 million </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google just bought smart thermostat company Nest a few months back for US$3.2 billion, and now Nest is making its part of the Google family a little larger with its acquisition of Dropcam for US$555 million. The standard US$149 and Pro US$199 cameras also support an optional Cloud Video Recording (CVR) subscription feature, which saves a week or 30 days of footage online for viewing later.</p> <p>Even if Google didn&rsquo;t drive the deal, this move gives it an even stronger position within the connected home market, and Nest and Dropcam acting as one will no doubt make the smart home even smarter down the line. There&rsquo;s a happy ending, of course, and a nice motivational quote for the cameras at the end, but it&rsquo;s still a tough one to watch without cringing.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWOANXNGrZc">YouTube</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/action-cam/gopro-hero-3-silver-edition/review">GoPro Hero3+ Silver Edition review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HWOANXNGrZc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nintendo&#039;s adding a Mercedes Benz to Mario Kart 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Even the colorful Mushroom Kingdom isn&rsquo;t immune from the pressures of product placement, as Nintendo has announced plans to add a Mercedes Benz GLA-Class kart to Mario Kart 8 on Wii U as downloadable content this summer. Expect the new Mortal Kombat to be on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for sure, but don&rsquo;t be surprised if it ends up on last-gen platforms as well.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/05/28/the-mortal-kombat-x-posters-are-real.aspx">Game Informer</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/mortal-kombat/review">Mortal Kombat review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Mortal Kombat" alt="Mortal Kombat" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/mortalkombat10.jpg?1401345181" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Major Leap Motion controller update enters beta </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Leap Motion controller is an interesting bit of tech, allowing you to play games and control apps on your computer using only your fingers, but it still lacks enough killer software support to propel it to mainstream success. Just check out the video above to see how impressive the interactions could be&mdash;assuming it actually works that well in practice.</p> <p>The update will also improve the device&rsquo;s resistance to ambient infrared light, letting it perform better in certain lighting conditions. Additional features will be implemented as bugs are squashed before V2 hits consumers, which could be a matter of months still. So what does this aclock do that an alarm clock doesn&#39;t?</strong><br />It&#39;s simple, for starters &ndash; no fiddly little buttons covering its surface, just a simple backlit E Ink display, and interchangeable faces.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>So, if there are no buttons, how do I control it? </strong><br />The aclock uses gesture controls &ndash; you can double tap to snooze, and shake to silence the alarm.</p> <p><strong>Yes, but how do I set the alarm in the first place? </strong><br />Using an app, of course! The aclock will also flag up notifications including upcoming meetings and weather info &ndash; but only after your alarm&#39;s gone off.</p> <p><strong>Sounds good &ndash;&nbsp;how much does it cost? </strong><br />The aclock is currently seeking crowdfunding cash&nbsp;&ndash; it&#39;s <a href="http://www.aclock.co/" target="_blank">currently available</a> for US$50 on an early bird deal for the black or white polycarbonate version, while an aluminium model in black or silver can be had for US$70. With 23 days left, aclock&#39;s raised over US$20,000 of its US$35,000 target, so it&#39;s looking likely that it&#39;ll make it into production.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-ww9000-touchscreen-equipped-smartphone-powered-washing-machine/news" target="_blank">Samsung WW9000 is a touchscreen-equipped, smartphone-powered washing machine</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="aclock" alt="aclock" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/aclock-02.jpg?1399431098" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/aclock-alarm-clock-pebble-your-bedside-table/news#comments Connected home Hot Stuff Tue, 06 May 2014 11:41:30 +0000 Stephen Graves 1436652 at http://www.stuff.tv Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick http://www.stuff.tv/chromecast/google-chromecast-vs-roku-streaming-stick/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> These dirt-cheap dongles will give your TV new streaming smarts. Network-connected Blu-ray player or home cinema system? Games console? Apple TV, Now TV, Roku 1, 2 or 3...</p> <p>All will work, and all will do a great job in most situations. But for our money the new Google Chromecast and Roku Streaming Stick strike the best balance between cost, content and ease of use.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/marc-mclaren" title="View user profile.">Marc McLaren</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There&#39;s not much to choose between the two sticks here, and given that they&#39;ll be stuck round the back of your TV it doesn&#39;t really matter much what they look like anyway.&nbsp;</p> <p>But for what it&#39;s worth, the Chromecast is short with a bulbous back end, the Roku a little longer and slimmer. The Roku is proudly purple, the Chromecast casual in black.</p> <p>Both plug into your telly via HDMI, and both also have a microUSB socket at the other end from which they draw their power. For this task you can either use the bundled wall plug or hook them straight up to a USB socket on your TV.</p> <p>But crucially, the Roku comes with a dedicated remote, whereas the Chromecast can only be operated via smartphone app. And as the remote doesn&rsquo;t need line of sight, it&#39;s no less flexible to operate than an app either. It&#39;s well built, the buttons work with a satisfying click and using it is often more simple than switching on your phone, navigating to an app etc etc. And if you really must have an app, Roku has one of those too.</p> <p><strong><em>Winner:</em> Roku Streaming Stick</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/netflix/netflix-our-job-get-directors-cut-and-not-bother-all-rest-it/feature">Netflix: &quot;There really isn&#39;t a case for different versions of a film&quot;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="You&#039;re not really buying them for their looks" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_vs_Chromecast_3.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Roku&#039;s remote is a bonus" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_Remote_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Both devices plug into an HDMI port..." alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_3_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="...and both are powered by microUSB" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-in-hand-back_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CONTENT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A media streamer is only ever as good as the media it has to stream. Obviously. And here the Roku Streaming Stick has an advantage.</p> <p>You&#39;ll find more than 500 apps on the Roku store, including the aforementioned BBC iPlayer and Netflix, Sky Store and Now TV, 4oD, Demand 5, Spotify, TuneIn, and YouTube. There are hundreds more specialist channels, catering for every interest. Personally we&#39;re quite partial to Visitation, a live stream of services from the Our Lady of the Visitation chuch in Cincinnatti, Ohio. We kid you not. Well OK, we&#39;ve never really watched it. But it does exist.</p> <p>We have watched the excellent Sky Now TV though: splash out &pound;6.99 on a month&#39;s Entertainment Pass, immerse yourself in <em>Game Of Thrones </em>and <em>The Walking Dead</em> and you&#39;ll be glad you had it.</p> <p>Adding apps is a piece of cake and new services join the line-up regularly. Hopefully we&#39;ll see ITV Player soon, so we can get our fix of <em>Loose Women</em>.</p> <p>Rather than have its own apps, Chromecast relies on iOS or Android apps with a &#39;Cast&#39; button. Netflix has one, as has iPlayer, but not much else; hopefully more will arrive soon. You do of course also get YouTube, and there&#39;s an excellent selection of films to buy on Google Play Movies.</p> <p>Streaming your own content is also easier on Roku than on Chromecast. On Google&#39;s device you&#39;ll need to use the Plex service - which is fine, but a little fiddly - whereas on the Streaming Stick you have access to the Roku Media Player app, among others. It&#39;s slick to use and will play just about anything.</p> <p>Ultimately, there&#39;s only one winner in this category. While both devices have the big two of Netflix and iPlayer, the fact that the Roku has so many more channels overall gives it a clear lead over its rival.</p> <p><strong><em>Winner:</em> Roku Streaming Stick</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-1/review">Roku 1 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Casting, 1-2-3" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/chromecast-tv-ready-to-cast_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="BBC iPlayer now has a Cast button" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iplayer-chromecast-htc_0.JPG?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="There are many, many channels available on Roku" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_homescreen_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Netflix: a winner on any device" alt="Google Chromecast vs Roku Streaming Stick" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_Netflix_app_0.jpg?1399043774" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PERFORMANCE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Casting from a compatible app to Google Chromecast works quickly enough, and given the right content it looks great too.</p> <p>Netflix&rsquo;s Super HD streams will delight you with their 1080p, high-bitrate, Dolby Digital+ surround loveliness, and if you purchase a HD flick from Google Play Movies they&#39;ll look great too. BBC iPlayer maxes out at 720p and a YouTube clip will only ever be as good as the quality it&#39;s transmitted in, but that&#39;s the same for the Roku too.</p> <p>To our eyes, the Roku&#39;s picture is a tad softer than that of the Chromecast, but not enough to make a huge difference. Navigation is snappy, particularly if using the remote, and you can also Cast to the Streaming Stick from some apps, including Netflix, if it takes your fancy. Those who&rsquo;ve wall-mounted and therefore have to use a side-facing HDMI might see a purple tip protruding from the edge of their telly, but that&rsquo;s not nearly as frightful as we&rsquo;ve just made that sound.</p> <p>But don&rsquo;t go thinking this is an entirely wire-free affair: the Streaming Stick (like the Chromecast) can&rsquo;t draw power via HDMI, so you need to use the bundled USB cable to supply it with juice. The vast majority of TVs now have USB sockets, and if you&rsquo;ve got one free that&rsquo;s by far the neatest option (just use a cable tie to keep the excess cable out of sight), but if you&rsquo;re without an available socket there&rsquo;s also a wall charger in the box.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Streaming Stick vs Chromecast: the weigh-in" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_vs_Chromecast_1.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="You&#039;ll need a spare HDMI and spare USB socket for power" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_3.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Vents and recess button: things just got serious" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_5.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Lost the bundled cable? Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and input the password and the Roku downloads and installs the latest version of its firmware - a process that took all of about 3mins for us.</p> <p>At this point you&rsquo;ll be directed to create a Roku account via the main website. It doesn&rsquo;t take long and once done you&rsquo;re left to the far more enjoyable job of selecting which apps you&rsquo;d like to install.</p> <p>Roku reckons there are 500+ apps (or Channels, as it insists on calling them) now available, and unsurprisingly huge swathes of it are absolute rubbish. Thankfully the good stuff is easy to find in the Most Popular menu, and there&rsquo;s plenty of it. Unsurprisingly, video on-demand takes centre stage, with iPlayer and Demand 5 covering the free stuff and Netflix, Sky Now TV and Sky Store doing the subscription and on-demand thing. Music from Spotify is a great bonus, too, and TuneIn is there to deliver internet radio.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s already a bunch more stuff than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-chromecast/review" target="_blank">Chromecast&rsquo;s</a> got, and the Roku treads on the Chromecast&rsquo;s apparent USP by accepting videos that are &ldquo;casted&rdquo; from the Netflix app on your iPhone or Android device. On top of that the Roku excels in an area that the Chromecast struggles - streaming your own media.</p> <p>The Chromecast currently relies entirely on Plex if you want to play your own video or music files, and decent though Plex is, it relies on you either having a computer on and running Plex, or a NAS with a Plex app and the ability to transcode, which isn&rsquo;t all that common. The Roku also has Plex, which will be fine for some, but it also has a dedicated Roku Media Player app that - while very basic in appearance - plays just about anything without any fuss. There&rsquo;s Twonky Beam, too, and DS Video for those with Synology DiskStations. Essentially, if you want to stream your own stuff, the Roku is a much better bet for most people than the Chromecast.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ds214se/synology-ds214se-dsm-50/review" target="_blank">Synology DS214se with DSM 5.0 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The main app food groups are covered" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_homescreen.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Casting from Netflix is supported just as it is on Chromecast" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_Netflix_app.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Roku: A Gateway to Sky </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Those Now TV and Sky Store apps are great ways for those who aren&rsquo;t Sky subscribers to get access to the wealth of Sky content.</p> <p>Sky Store is a simple pay-as-you-go movie streaming service that impresses in terms of content (1200 movies and loads of top notch new releases), even if the lack of HD is a bit of a shame.</p> <p>Now TV is slightly more confusing but also probably of more interest to many. It&rsquo;s split into three channels: Entertainment, Movies and Sport. The first includes all of the TV content you&rsquo;d find on Sky&rsquo;s own channels (including Sky Atlantic, which brings with it new <em>Game of Thrones</em>, among many others), available on-demand for a &pound;6.99 monthly fee.</p> <p>Movies gives on-demand access to all of the - you guessed it - movies currently on the Sky platform for &pound;8.99 a month. But this doesn&rsquo;t include brand spanking new movies - you&rsquo;ll have to go to the Sky Store for those.</p> <p>Finally, Sports gives you 24-hour access to all of Sky&rsquo;s sports channels for &pound;9.99. A princely sum, but if it&rsquo;s the last day of the Premier League season and you&rsquo;re not a Sky TV subscriber, probably one that&rsquo;s worth paying.</p> <p>Disappointingly those who already pay for a Sky Subscription don&rsquo;t get free access to Now TV, so this isn&rsquo;t a cheap way to get Multiroom. Sky Go is designed for you, but it&rsquo;s really only available on portable devices at this stage.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Stick a Fork in Me, I&#039;m done </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Individual apps take a little while to load and there&rsquo;s no real multitasking here, but navigating menus is nippy and content buffers pretty quickly, thanks in part to dual-band Wi-Fi, which you won&rsquo;t find on the equally cheap <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-1/review" target="_blank">Roku 1</a> (speed freaks may want to consider the Roku 3, the only player in the range with an ethernet socket).</p> <p>Picture and sound is very decent, too. It&rsquo;ll handle Netflix streams in so-called Super HD (essentially higher-bandwidth 1080p) but to our eyes the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-chromecast/review" target="_blank">Chromecast</a> is just a touch crisper and sharper when playing the same content. Dolby Digital+ is handled, too, and sound is solid and detailed.</p> <p>The remote&rsquo;s also nice - decent weight, fairly ergonomic and with a nice, positive click to the buttons. A bit too last decade for you? There&rsquo;s also a free Roku control app.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-chromecast/review" target="_blank">Google Chromecast review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Netflix Super HD and Dolby Digital+ are both supported" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_Netflix_app_3.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Bundled remotes are a good thing - this one especially" alt="Roku Streaming Stick review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Roku_Streaming_Stick_Remote.jpg?1398882654" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Roku Streaming Stick verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Little Roku taking on the mighty Google sounds like a recipe for a bloody nose, but Roku&#39;s been in the streaming game for a while now and despite costing &pound;20 more than the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google-chromecast/review" target="_blank">Chromecast</a>, it&rsquo;s the Streaming Stick we&rsquo;d recommend.</p> <p>If all you want is Netflix and iPlayer on your main telly, by all means go Google, but if you also want to stream your own videos and music, access Spotify and grab a slice of the Sky pie every so often, the Roku really is the way to go. The fact that it also comes with a good old-fashioned remote won&rsquo;t be lost on many people, either.</p> <p>And what of Roku&rsquo;s other players? There are little feature differences here and there, but for us the Streaming Stick makes the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/roku/roku-1/review" target="_blank">Roku 1</a> and 2 largely irrelevant unless you&rsquo;ve got an old TV without HDMI (in which case save your money for a new TV, yeah?).</p> <p>The Roku 3 might be worth looking at if you&rsquo;re keen to go wired for faster streaming speeds, but for most people the Streaming Stick wins out - it&rsquo;s the pick of the range and the best budget streamer available right now.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a As a result the web interface is a little slower, but it can still stream a 1080p HD movie without any lag, and file transfer times are identical.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The DS214se is visually identical to the DS213j" alt="Synology DiskStation 214se and DSM 5.0 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF0457.jpg?1398331803" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The enclosure has bays for two hard drives of up to 5TB each" alt="Synology DiskStation 214se and DSM 5.0 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSCF0465.jpg?1398331803" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Synology DS214se tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Maximum capacity</strong> - 10TB (2 x 5TB HDDs)</p> <p><strong>Hard drives included?</strong> - No</p> <p><strong>Processor</strong> - 800MHz Marvell Armada 370</p> <p><strong>RAM</strong> - 256MB DDR3</p> <p><strong>Connections</strong> - USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet</p> <p><strong>Noise</strong> - 18.4dB</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong> - 165 x 100 x 226mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong> - 0.87kg (without HDDs)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A value proposition </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are a few small but notable omissions: the DS214se doesn&rsquo;t include power schedules for turning the unit off at night, or a wake on LAN activity setting. The cloud features of DSM 4.3 were an epic pain to get going, requiring lots of different logins and some tricky port-forwarding. DSM 5.0 puts that right - the very first thing it asks you to do is create a QuickConnect account, which serves as a way of accessing cloud features and connecting to your NAS drive via the internet.
