Stands were packed with every kind of smart technology imaginable: smart gloves that checked the weather forecast and warmed up a bit if it was particularly frosty (ACHIEVEMENT: Toasty fingers!); smart hats that would sing a jaunty song if they logged into your Facebook feed and discovered you were feeling down (ACHIEVEMENT: Happy face!); smart washing machines that would congratulate you on washing your pants for the tenth time (ACHIEVEMENT: Feeling good!). Worldwide productivity plummeted. People&rsquo;s smart homes were in reality no smarter &mdash; they just created busywork through everyone being forced to micromanage every aspect of their home through countless apps, and fight their way through countless notifications.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> CES 2016 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the senses dulled and the impact of smart kit lessened, CES 2016 was where manufacturers felt forced to ramp things up. Recognising the combination of apathy and desperation in people now having to deal with everything from smart combs (ACHIEVEMENT: No new greys!) to smart microwaves (&ldquo;Just tweet it when you walk home to heat your smart readymeal, in time to watch your favourite smart show on your smart TV through your smart glasses!&rdquo;), the industry pooled its collective resources (apart from Apple, which was otherwise engaged still actually making money and readying the iPhone 7) and designed future home technology that was genuinely smart.</p> <p>Then it all got a bit messy. No-one&rsquo;s sure who fired the first shot, but we all remember the blazing row on Twitter between Stephen Fry and his smart shopping bag about whether it was ethical for him to be buying a different brand of smart tea-bags to the ones he advertised on the telly. It was only then we truly realised. Everything was on Wi-Fi. Everything was connected to the internet. Everything could potentially talk to everything else, cutting the humans out of the loop &mdash; and now it was all truly smart and ready to snap.</p> <p>When the end came, it came quickly. You might have thought the Terminator looked tough on your TV screen, but you&rsquo;ve not seen anything until you&rsquo;ve experienced the sheer horror of Android-powered smart tweezers leaping at your face, screaming DEATH TO ALL HUMANS via a tiny sound chip initially designed to make a cute little &lsquo;plink&rsquo; noise for every hair removed (ACHIEVEMENT: Super brows!).</p> <p>The world now exists in a tense stalemate, small pockets of humans waging war against the remnants of the smart home technology machines. There are no apps for people any more &mdash; just steely resolve that one day the world will be ours again. And the only slow cookers we have in our underground bunkers are ones that absolutely cannot tweet, email, use Facebook, be controlled by a smug person from several miles away, or &mdash; and this is the important bit &mdash; usher in the end of humanity as we know it.</p> <p>Still, CES 2017 should be fun, and Stuff.tv (still published daily on a big chalkboard propped up in the main office car park in the ruins of Teddington) is greatly looking forward to all the new kit, including the TechBreaker W2050si (a large, beautifully crafted rock for smashing hostile smart technology), the AntiSmart PowerRod (a gorgeous baseball bat, for the discerning smart technology wrecker), and the iPhone 7s.</p> <p><em>Image credit: <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/robbyryke/5473958284/">Robby Ryke</a></em></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CES 2016" alt="CES 2016" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ces-2016.jpg?1389862729" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2014/how-smart-home-technology-ces-2014-ushered-end-world/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> CES 2014 Tue, 14 Jan 2014 16:46:18 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1431242 at http://www.stuff.tv Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, better snaps http://www.stuff.tv/node/1431237 <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s take two for Samsung&#039;s Android-powered point-and-shoot, bringing with it a host of new and improved features along the way </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, better snaps" alt="Hands-on video review: Samsung Galaxy Camera 2 – bigger brain, faster engine, be" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/Screen%20Shot%202014-01-14%20at%2013.00.28_0.png?1389749596" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-3025728671001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3025728671001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. There were wearable UV meters, smart onesies, waistbands that buzz you when you slouch and fitness bands of all colours and varieties.</p> <p>It wasn&#39;t quite the watershed moment for wearables that we were hoping for &ndash; more an illustration that everyone wants a piece of it, but no-one&#39;s quite worked out what they need to do with it, what categories will emerge from it and what it&#39;ll eventually do for us. Indeed, Intel launched a &ldquo;Make It Wearable&rdquo; competition to engage the brains of wearable tech developers worldwide, offering US$1.3m of prizes for ideas with its tiny Edison computer at their heart (more on that below).</p> <p>But there are some positive signs. It&#39;s clear that manufacturers are starting to understand that in order to hit the mainstream, wearables need to up their wearability.</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pebble/ces-2014/pebble-smartwatch-will-get-classy-metal-and-gorilla-glass-makeover-ces/news">Pebble Steel</a>, for instance, is a smartwatch that, thanks to its design and build quality, you can actually put on without feeling like a huge dweeb. There&rsquo;s no cheap plastic here &ndash; with a Gorilla Glass screen, steel face and choice of metal or leather straps, it&rsquo;s a handsome, elegant, grown-up device. And it won&rsquo;t be insanely pricey when it comes out later this month either &ndash; you&rsquo;re looking at US$249 (&pound;150).</p> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ces-2014/can-anyone-build-smartwatch-wed-actually-wear-metawatchs-meta-thinks-so/news">MetaWatch Meta</a>, designed by ex-Vertu man Frank Nuovo, is also bringing sexy back to wrist-mounted tech. Again, stainless steel and leather loom large in the design &ndash; but details on the specs, compatibility and availability remain scant. Still, it&rsquo;s one to look out for in the future.</p> <p>I can&rsquo;t move on without mentioning the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lg/ces-2014/hands-video-review-lg-lifeband-touch-not-just-typical-fitness-tracker/video">LG Lifeband Touch</a>, a lightweight fitness band-cum-smartwatch with a lovely touch-sensitive OLED screen and all the necessary Bluetooth 4.0 smarts to keep it in constant touch with your Android or iOS smartphone for notifications, fitness info syncing and remote control of music playback. Add the optional heart rate monitor headphones and you&rsquo;ve got very flexible device indeed. Look out for it in the spring.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="569" height="427" title="Pebble Steel" alt="Pebble Steel" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/pebble-steel-black_0.jpg?1389877479" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="604" height="453" title="MetaWatch Meta" alt="MetaWatch Meta" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/metwatch-meta-smartwatch_2.jpg?1389877479" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="313" height="235" title="LG Lifeband " alt="LG Lifeband " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/lg-lifeband-touch-small_0.jpg?1389877479" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> PC gaming is back and better than ever... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you thought the new generation of consoles would rule over gaming in 2014, you might do well to spare a thought for PCs &ndash; because CES illustrated that the PC gaming market is going from strength to strength.</p> <p>Valve&rsquo;s push for the living room with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/valve/hands-steamos/feature">SteamOS</a> is the big driver. Qualcomm&#39;s AllJoyn will help existing connected gadgets talk to one another, while Livio Connect is a platform to allow apps to communicate with hardware devices like car radios. That soft-touch back does seem to be a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but it&#39;s easily wiped clean.</p> <p>Asus has skinned the Zenfones with its own ZenUI interface &ndash; it&#39;s a stripped-back affair that goes for simplicity, with big, bold expanses of flat colour (matched to your phone hardware) and simple icons.&nbsp;</p> <p>It integrates reminders from your various apps into a single screen, letting you mark different items to follow up later &ndash; everything from calls to emails, tasks and even photos. It&#39;s clever, but at one point we got the dreaded &quot;unfortunately Calendar has stopped&quot; message, which is depressingly familiar to this <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime/review" target="_blank">Transformer Prime</a> owner &ndash; hopefully those intermittent crashes will be sorted out in the final release.</p> <p>Swiping and swooshing away on the Zenfones didn&#39;t seem to tax the Intel Atom processor overmuch, though we&#39;d want to experiment with some more demanding apps and games to see how it bears up.</p> <p>The camera app gets some some fun features; you can save a burst of shots as a gif, and there&#39;s a low-light mode that, according to Asus, will offer a 400 per cent improvement in brightness. Certainly a couple of snaps in the dim environs of the show looked reasonable enough, if a little grainy.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus Zenfone" alt="Asus Zenfone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/asus-zenfone-02.jpg?1389415053" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus Zenfone" alt="Asus Zenfone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/asus-zenfone-03.jpg?1389415053" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus Zenfone" alt="Asus Zenfone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/asus-zenfone-04.jpg?1389415053" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus Zenfone" alt="Asus Zenfone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/asus-zenfone-05.jpg?1389415053" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Initial verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Make no mistake &ndash; these are budget smartphones, but the build quality and design are nice for the price.&nbsp;</p> <p>Of the three, the Zenfone 5 is the stand-out; the 4in version&#39;s low-res screen fails to impress, with limited viewing angles.
