It uses the same Maxwell architecture as Nvidia&rsquo;s current crop of high-end gaming graphics cards, and the company says it will begin arriving in products during the first half of this year.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nvidia-shield/review-0">Nvidia Shield Tablet review</a></strong></p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In the future, the Tegra X1 will be used to power self-driving cars. To get him to go around the engineers need to drive him for two laps - once on the left edge and once on the right - so he can use the myriad sensors onboard to learn the track boundaries.</p> <p class="p1">Once he&rsquo;s got that information a theoretical racing line is created and Bobby will take to the track like a half-decent racing driver.</p> <p class="p1">Making him faster than that involves a few more coached laps, where more ambitious lines and later braking points can be taught. All of this had been done before I hopped in.</p> <p class="p1"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/why-you-should-be-pumped-about-self-driving-cars/feature" target="_blank">Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4912" height="3264" title="Bobby next to one of those old-fashioned cars that needs a meat-derived driver" alt="Audi Self-Driving concept car" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Audi-RS7-Ascari-1.JPG?1419211283" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="4912" height="3264" title="Most of the componentry in the back is just boards with inputs that make it quicker for the engineers to get at Bobby’s driving processors, which are actually contained in a box that’s little bigger than a PS4" alt="Audi Self-Driving concept car" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Audi-RS7-Ascari-8.JPG?1419211283" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="3507" height="2480" title="To get Bobby to go around the track the engineers need to drive him for two laps - once on the left edge and once on the right - so he can use the myriad sensors onboard to learn the track boundaries" alt="Audi Self-Driving concept car" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/RS7c140005.jpg?1419211283" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Valtteri (ro)Bottas </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Bobby is not slow off the line, cautious on the brakes nor timid through the corners. I was particularly thankful for the latter feature as the heavens opened along the second long straight.</p> <p>Knowing a rain shower was probably on the way, Audi&rsquo;s engineers had dialled the robo-RS7 back just a little bit before we set off on the lap, but he was still driving seriously fast. Terrifyingly fast, in fact - braking like he&rsquo;d been dared to leave it as late as possible, swinging into corners with no regard for the lunch I&rsquo;d just eaten and accelerating as if he&rsquo;d been jabbed in the backside with a hot poker.</p> <p>The lap was completely automated - the engineer sitting in the driver&rsquo;s seat was holding a kill switch in case anything went wrong, but otherwise touched neither the steering wheel nor pedals - but there was nothing robotic about it. And no, Bobby isn&rsquo;t the ultimate toy for the petrolhead lottery winner without real friends to race against. He&rsquo;s actually a showcase of technology that Audi is planning on injecting into its &lsquo;normal&rsquo; cars in the near future.</p> <p>Perhaps surprisingly, Audi has no intention to do a Google and create completely autonomous vehicles. Instead, the company&#39;s talking up the importance of driving pleasure, which would be hard to find in a car that you don&rsquo;t, you know, drive.</p> <p>The plan is to use self-driving tech to take on the more mundane bits of driving - starting with traffic jams and parking. The company sees a point in the very near future when if you find yourself all snarled up on the M1 you can switch on your car&rsquo;s robo-brain and have it handle the shuffle forward while you deal with emails or browse the internet.</p> <p>The parking thing is even fancier: imagine pulling up at the entrance to a multi-storey and hopping out so that your car can tackle the dreary loop to the top to find a space. It could even then meet you at the exit once you&rsquo;ve done your shopping. Audi says these magical car parks are already in the development stage, albeit in the Middle East for now.</p> <p>How long it takes for this brand of automotive ingenuity to hit Britain&rsquo;s potholed roads depends on boring things such as regulations being agreed, but Audi is right now taking advantage of the slightly more relaxed rules in the US to prove the technology and convince our more cautious government that automated motoring is reliable and safe.</p> <p>And Audi&rsquo;s not going it alone - the likes of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/volvo/new-volvo-xc90-say-hello-safest-suv-ever/feature" target="_blank">Volvo</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ford/new-ford-mondeo-s-pedestrian-detection-tech-may-help-avoid-accidents/news" target="_blank">Ford</a>&nbsp;and many others are pushing the same envelope. With a bit of cooperation we could see the likes of automated traffic jam driving in the next couple of years. Bobby certainly proves the actual technology is already well on the way.</p> <p>And we now know (if it wasn&rsquo;t already abundantly clear) that humanity&rsquo;s going to need a better champion than me when the machines rise.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bmw/bmw-s-new-car-parks-itself-when-you-speak-smartwatch/news" target="_blank">BMW&#39;s new car parks itself when you speak into a smartwatch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3507" height="2480" title="The plan is to use self-driving tech to take on the more mundane bits of driving - starting with traffic jams and parking" alt="Self-driving Audi RS7" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/RS7c140008.jpg?1419211283" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ghost in the machine? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Speaking of the machines rising, one rather spooky little tidbit did come out in a conversation with Thomas Muller, Audi&rsquo;s Head of Development Braking, Steering and Driver Assistance Systems.</p> <p>He told me that Bobby and his brother Ajay - despite being identical cars with identical hardware, software and mapping - have different personalities. But they represent an important step in getting autonomous vehicles onto Britain&rsquo;s roads.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://innovate-uk.mynewsdesk.com/pressreleases/driverless-cars-head-to-the-streets-of-greenwich-milton-keynes-coventry-and-bristol-1093794" target="_blank">Innovate UK</a> via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/04/uk-cities-driverless-car-trials/" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/why-you-should-be-pumped-about-self-driving-cars/feature" target="_blank">Google, Drive: Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/uk-s-self-driving-car-trial-now-has-roadmap/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/uk-s-self-driving-car-trial-now-has-roadmap/news#comments Self-Driving Cars Thu, 04 Dec 2014 11:09:16 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1454653 at http://www.stuff.tv Audi heats up self-driving car competition by demonstrating its 150mph RS7 http://www.stuff.tv/audi/audi-heats-self-driving-car-competition-demonstrating-how-fast-its-car-can-go/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s the world&#039;s fastest autonomous vehicle, according to its makers </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="567" height="425" title="Audi heats up self-driving car competition by demonstrating how fast its car can go" alt="Audi heats up self-driving car competition by demonstrating how fast its car can" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/audi%20piloted.jpg?1413898712" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Self-driving cars are the future. Besides the Leaf, the Infiniti is also going to see a lot of autonomous tweaks.</p> <p>The carmaker is hoping to have fully automated parking available in its vehicles, as well as the Traffic Jam Assistant feature that lets the car go autonomous in heavy traffic. Nissan is also working on a system that will help cars change lanes: adaptive cruise control will steer a the vehicle around slower traffic when nearby lanes are clear of obstruction. Another feature would be the ability for cars to negotiate city intersections without driver input.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/nissan-dumps-driver-self-driving-cars-becomes-first-be-allowed-japanese-roads/news">Nissan&#39;s &quot;Tron&quot; self-driving car becomes first to be allowed on Japanese highways</a></strong></p> <p>Exciting developments indeed &ndash; though the question is whether Nissan would get approval. Paramount would be safety concerns: would it be wise or proven safe to let a car navigate its way out of traffic without a person deciding just where and when to turn?</p> <p>But if the technology is there, why not? Traffic jams are a major source of stress for the average driver and prove overly ideal in creating traffic accidents. Less driving, more intelligent navigating is good, we say. Hence its new prototype, the semi-self-driving Future Truck 2025 &ndash; designed to provide a better, easier driving experience for truckers.</p> <p>The Future Track is based on its award-winning Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845, with an engine that reaches 330 kW (449 hp) and a maximum torque of 2200 newton metres. Couple that with the automated 12-speed Mercedes Power Shift 3 transmission and it already looks like a pretty capable truck.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sit back and let the truck drive </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Engine aside, what makes the Future Truck special is its self-driving features. While not quite the Google self-driving car, it is rigged with enough tech to make the marathon drives truckers contend with a little bit more bearable.&nbsp; There are sensors to check the road ahead, scanning at both 250m and 70m ranges with 18-degree and 130-degree segments at those respective distances.</p> <p>Besides sensors, there&#39;s a stereo camera with a 100m range that scans an area of 45 degrees horizontally and 27 degrees vertically. It can identify pedestrians (very important), single and double lanes, traffic signs, moving and stationary objects as well as road surface conditions. So long as it contrasts with the background, an object can be recognised by the camera. Added bonus: lane markings.</p> <p>Sensors are also installed on the left and right side, with ranges of 60m covering a 170 degree angle. So the Future Truck has &#39;eyes and ears&#39; not just in front but on the sides, giving it a continuous view of the area in front of and beside it.</p> <p>The truck&#39;s system also has a 3D digital map, allowing it to be aware of its position and a road&#39;s course and topography.</p> <p>Truckers can communicate via the onboard WLAN technology with other vehicles and send messages to other vehicles so as to be able to respond to them if needed. There are also notifcations about unusual events including emergency braking, fog lamps and hazard warning system activations.</p> <p>It&#39;s not just about building a really cool truck. Mercedes-Benz sees its system as helping improve overall transport speed by allowing vehicles to communicate and share information, eventually turning road traffic into a self-learning system. This will help improve average transport speed by helping traffic flow without the need to raise the speed limit.</p> <p>If that means we will have less cause to worry about really big lorries going really fast, we&#39;re definitely onboard with this one.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/06/mercedes-semi-autonomous-truck/?ncid=rss_truncated" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HHpXny86TcY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Self-Driving Cars Mon, 07 Jul 2014 09:14:51 +0000 Stephen Graves 1441249 at http://www.stuff.tv Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-s-self-driving-car-two-seats-no-steering-wheel-and-no-brake-pedal/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The company’s first in-house prototype is a cutesy Noddy car capped at 25mph </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal" alt="Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/google-self-driving-prototype.jpg?1401807726" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Google has unveiled its first in-house self-driving car prototype &ndash; and its looks are likely to divide opinion.</p> <p>The two-seater, which looks like a Smart Car with a nonplussed face, is driven entirely by an on-board computer &ndash; there&rsquo;s no steering wheel and no pedals inside.
