Besides the Leaf, the Infiniti is also going to see a lot of autonomous tweaks.</p> <p>The carmaker is hoping to have fully automated parking available in its vehicles, as well as the Traffic Jam Assistant feature that lets the car go autonomous in heavy traffic. Nissan is also working on a system that will help cars change lanes: adaptive cruise control will steer a the vehicle around slower traffic when nearby lanes are clear of obstruction. Another feature would be the ability for cars to negotiate city intersections without driver input.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/nissan-dumps-driver-self-driving-cars-becomes-first-be-allowed-japanese-roads/news">Nissan&#39;s &quot;Tron&quot; self-driving car becomes first to be allowed on Japanese highways</a></strong></p> <p>Exciting developments indeed &ndash; though the question is whether Nissan would get approval. Paramount would be safety concerns: would it be wise or proven safe to let a car navigate its way out of traffic without a person deciding just where and when to turn?</p> <p>But if the technology is there, why not? Traffic jams are a major source of stress for the average driver and prove overly ideal in creating traffic accidents. Less driving, more intelligent navigating is good, we say. Hence its new prototype, the semi-self-driving Future Truck 2025 &ndash; designed to provide a better, easier driving experience for truckers.</p> <p>The Future Track is based on its award-winning Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845, with an engine that reaches 330 kW (449 hp) and a maximum torque of 2200 newton metres. Couple that with the automated 12-speed Mercedes Power Shift 3 transmission and it already looks like a pretty capable truck.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sit back and let the truck drive </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Engine aside, what makes the Future Truck special is its self-driving features. While not quite the Google self-driving car, it is rigged with enough tech to make the marathon drives truckers contend with a little bit more bearable.&nbsp; There are sensors to check the road ahead, scanning at both 250m and 70m ranges with 18-degree and 130-degree segments at those respective distances.</p> <p>Besides sensors, there&#39;s a stereo camera with a 100m range that scans an area of 45 degrees horizontally and 27 degrees vertically. It can identify pedestrians (very important), single and double lanes, traffic signs, moving and stationary objects as well as road surface conditions. So long as it contrasts with the background, an object can be recognised by the camera. Added bonus: lane markings.</p> <p>Sensors are also installed on the left and right side, with ranges of 60m covering a 170 degree angle. So the Future Truck has &#39;eyes and ears&#39; not just in front but on the sides, giving it a continuous view of the area in front of and beside it.</p> <p>The truck&#39;s system also has a 3D digital map, allowing it to be aware of its position and a road&#39;s course and topography.</p> <p>Truckers can communicate via the onboard WLAN technology with other vehicles and send messages to other vehicles so as to be able to respond to them if needed. There are also notifcations about unusual events including emergency braking, fog lamps and hazard warning system activations.</p> <p>It&#39;s not just about building a really cool truck. Mercedes-Benz sees its system as helping improve overall transport speed by allowing vehicles to communicate and share information, eventually turning road traffic into a self-learning system. This will help improve average transport speed by helping traffic flow without the need to raise the speed limit.</p> <p>If that means we will have less cause to worry about really big lorries going really fast, we&#39;re definitely onboard with this one.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2014/07/06/mercedes-semi-autonomous-truck/?ncid=rss_truncated" target="_blank">Engadget</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HHpXny86TcY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Self-Driving Cars Mon, 07 Jul 2014 09:14:51 +0000 Stephen Graves 1441249 at http://www.stuff.tv Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-s-self-driving-car-two-seats-no-steering-wheel-and-no-brake-pedal/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The company’s first in-house prototype is a cutesy Noddy car capped at 25mph </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal" alt="Google’s self-driving car: two seats, no steering wheel and no brake pedal" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/google-self-driving-prototype.jpg?1401807726" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Google has unveiled its first in-house self-driving car prototype &ndash; and its looks are likely to divide opinion.</p> <p>The two-seater, which looks like a Smart Car with a nonplussed face, is driven entirely by an on-board computer &ndash; there&rsquo;s no steering wheel and no pedals inside. That&rsquo;s this year&rsquo;s car. But we&rsquo;ll progressively be offering more and more automated functions, so in the mid-term, around five years, we&rsquo;ll see things like traffic jam assistance, where it&rsquo;ll take the adaptive cruise control we&rsquo;ve got already and combine it with automated steering and braking, and have the vehicle drive itself in stop-start traffic up to 50-60kmph. That means that in the UK you&rsquo;re looking at something like the M25 in rush hour &ndash;the car will just drive itself,&nbsp;completely hands-free, and you can relax and do some other stuff.&quot; </p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ford/mwc-2014/ford-s-lidar-packing-self-driving-car-maps-road-360-degrees/news" target="_blank">Ford&#39;s LiDAR car can see in 360&deg;</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/why-you-should-be-pumped-about-self-driving-cars/feature" target="_blank">Google, Drive: why you should be pumped about self-driving cars</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Ford Traffic Jam Assist" alt="Ford Traffic Jam Assist" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Traffic_Jam_Assist_06.jpg?1394164972" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> mind-reading cars </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>And for the fiddly bits where it&#39;s still best to have a human in control, technology can still play a significant part. </p> <p>&quot; One of the areas that really excites me is how we can use wearables to enhance driving,&quot; says Paul. &quot; If you&rsquo;re wearing a band that measures your heart rate, the car can be measuring whether you&rsquo;re stressed or you&rsquo;re tired or distracted, and it can react to keep you safer. The project was first unveiled in 2010, when it drove out of the fabled X Lab in a state far more mature and road-worthy than many could believe.</p> <p>Just three years earlier, six teams from around the world built self-driving cars that could complete the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA_Grand_Challenge" target="_blank">DARPA Grand Challenge</a>, but the fastest could only average 14mph. It was fun, but not exactly practical for fetching the shopping. The Google car, with its road-worthy intelligence, was seemingly generations ahead of everyone else.</p> <p>And thanks to Google&#39;s ingenuity and clout, the idea has caught on fast. Most motor manufacturers are investigating the tech, and city planners from San Francisco to Soweto talk about them with enthusiasm.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1165" height="874" title="Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars" alt="Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-car-2.jpg?1387766455" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> I bet they&#039;re expensive, though? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google typically uses Toyota Priuses (of course) with a US$150,000 custom rig of cameras and laser beam radar systems on top that provide the on-board computer with a real-time 360 degree view of everything that&#39;s going on around it.</p> <p>However, commercial self-driving cars shouldn&#39;t command quite such a premium. So tell us again about those wonderful human reaction times and how awesome your driving is.</p> <p>The reason tech firms from Motorola to Microsoft and transport planners are excited about autonomous cars is because taking driving out of human hands could be one of the most effective ways of saving lives since smallpox was eradicated.</p> <p>Google&#39;s cars have already proved themselves safer than human drivers, with just two minor accidents on record. One was the fault of the human driver, who had taken temporary control, the other was a rear-end shunt while the robot car was stationary.</p> <p>By continually drawing 3D maps taken from lots of sensors and comparing them against each other in real-time, the promise of robot cars are vehicles that are so aware of their surroundings it&#39;s almost impossible to crash into them. The theory is that autonomous cars are vehicles that are better at keeping following distances, don&#39;t shoot red lights and can brake harder, faster and more safely when they detect danger around them.</p> <p>Oh, and without human interference there&#39;d be no chancing it with split second red lights or undertaking to worry about. And since there&#39;d be bunching up on motorways and creating pointless traffic bottlenecks, or heavy feet to stamp on the accelerator, traffic would move faster, more efficiently and use less fuel too. Keeping traffic flowing safely and smoothly would also negate the effect that gridlock and traffic jams have on local economies too.
