Faster than the i8, in fact. And this is immediate power. No delay for the car to decide how it&rsquo;s going to hook up two different motors to most effectively deliver the acceleration, just all the power you could possibly require the moment you put your foot down.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p4">I thought I&rsquo;d miss the noise of an engine, but there&rsquo;s something just&nbsp;as exciting about that burst of speed being accompanied by near-silence &ndash; it&rsquo;s like the Starship Enterprise entering warp, and what could b&le;e more awesome than that?</p> <p class="p4">Onwards to the winding roads of Salisbury Plain, and the Tesla proves to be pretty darn chuckable for a car so big and heavy. You can&rsquo;t throw it into corners quite the same way you can the lithe little i8, but there&rsquo;s still more than enough grip to take them far quicker than you probably should. And you can fit a Tom Wiggins in the bonnet &ndash; something we genuinely did while photographing our motors.</p> <p class="p4"><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tesla/stuff-meets-elon-musk/feature">Stuff meets Elon Musk</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The challenging one </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen-tastic</strong><br />Not only does&nbsp;the Tesla have a touchscreen the size of two iPads &ndash; it&rsquo;s got another screen visible through the wheel.</p> <p><strong>Extra factor</strong><br />Full disclosure: our test car came with enough extras to take it up&nbsp;to &pound;100,000, but the standard P85 has all the essentials.</p> <p><strong>Family-friendly</strong><br />Unlike the other bachelor-mobiles,&nbsp;the Tesla has enough room for four plus&nbsp;a whole holiday&rsquo;s worth of luggage.</p> <p><strong>Modest machine</strong><br />It doesn&rsquo;t have the&nbsp;out-there looks of the i8 or XL1 , but that&rsquo;s part of the charm. Driving&nbsp;it is like walking through a busy shopping centre with a levitating clockwork monkey made of gold: everyone wants to know what&nbsp;that expensive-looking thing is. Cars slow down and speed up to&nbsp;be alongside it, usually with a phone held to the window.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p2"><strong>Goat-botherer</strong><br />The i8 doesn&rsquo;t just look like the Batmobile; it also moves like it&rsquo;s just emerged from a cave through a waterfall. While Cheddar Gorge&rsquo;s population of goats dawdled in front of every other car on the road, for the i8 they stepped aside &ndash; partly because it looks like it might eat them, and partly because of the noise it makes. When you push it out of its near-silent electric roll, the i8 leaps forward with a cackle-inducing robot growl that is one of the most satisfying noises in the world.&nbsp;</p> <p>Our second stop, a deserted bit of road somewhere in Somershire or Borset or something, was a good 50 miles of mini-roundabouts and country lanes away. After a bit of mucking about with the sat-nav, I was guided by easily the best heads-up display I&rsquo;ve seen in a car: directions and speed limits are projected onto the windscreen, floating steadily in your field of view. While naturally I observed the rules of the road, I arrived at our next rendezvous with time to buy and consume a chicken sandwich and a 250ml bottle of chocolate milk before the next car turned up.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4928" height="3280" title="Stunner" alt="Best electric cars test - BMW i8, Volkswagen XL1, Tesla Model S reviewed" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/_JL44223.JPG?1415989604" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Driver specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1"><strong>Last car owned</strong> Vauxhall Astra 1.4</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Fuel:&nbsp;</strong>Coffee, beef crisps</p> <p class="p1"><strong>Favourite UK road:&nbsp;</strong>B3212</p> <p><strong>Driving hero:&nbsp;</strong>Michael Knight</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-10"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p class="p1"><strong>Snarly precision</strong><br />On the motorway and in Comfort mode, the i8 drives like a BMW, albeit an incredibly posh one from the future. You can also speed into a corner with conviction. Fortunately, even in the variable-speed hell of our nation&rsquo;s most boring thoroughfare, the i8 is a wonderful place to be. The front two seats are luxurious, divided by a wide central hump that also houses iDrive&rsquo;s minimal but effective wheel-button control system.</p> <p class="p3">The back seats are big enough for a handbag or a medium-sized duck. My i8 had the Harman/Kardon speaker upgrade, allowing me to wallow in a big bath of music while the motorway did its thing outside.&nbsp;</p> <p class="p3"><strong>First place, naturally</strong><br />It was to be expected that the i8 got to Whitstable comfortably ahead of the others, but as I glimpsed the east coast it had one more surprise for me: in the gullwing doors there&rsquo;s a gently glowing strip of blue that only becomes noticeable when it gets dark, underlining the fighter-jet feel of the cockpit. It&rsquo;s just an LED strip, but it sums up what&rsquo;s brilliant about this BMW: it&rsquo;s a concept car that has, for once, actually been built with its mad design flourishes, spaceship lights, science-fiction powertrain and carbon-fibre everything.</p> <p class="p3">It&rsquo;s a supercar that uses as much petrol as a small hatchback (much less if you drive carefully), but the best thing about it is its lack of compromise. Electric cars have been around for ages.</p> <p>But for some reason, all-electric motoring didn&rsquo;t stick. The demise of these early cars can be attributed to a number of factors: the rapid improvement of internal combustion engine, the discovery of vast oil reserves overseas, Henry Ford bringing the cost of car ownership down and so on &ndash; but it&#39;s also partly down to our laziness.</p> <p>Those in charge of cash flow likely saw the downsides of electric vehicles (limited range, low top speed etc.) and decided it was easier and cheaper to improve combustion engines rather than focus on battery technology, despite the massive pitfalls of limited oil supplies and the sort of choking pollution that kills polar bears.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/down-blind-fanboyism-cant-we-all-be-friends/feature?utm_source=stuff.tv&amp;utm_medium=Internal&amp;utm_content=Content%20promo&amp;utm_campaign=New%20Perspectives%20">Can we all stop being tech fanboys and just hug?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/CARyUfkiBY8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In 1969, Thomas P. Citroen&#39;s C4 Cactus Airflow 2L tackles the fuel economy issue by mating a 1.2-litre PureTech engine, which is already available in the Cactus line-up, to HybridAir technology that uses compressed air to turn the wheels. A special aerodynamic body kit, complete with cooling flaps that can open and close when needed, was also added to eke out every last drop of fuel. The addition of small cameras rather than wing mirrors also ensures the economical Cactus is as slippery as possible.</p> <p>Renault claims its suitably futuristic EOLAB model can return a staggering 282mpg thanks to the use of lightweight components, aerodynamic body panels and a petrol/electric hybrid powertrain. To cut weight further, Renault engineers opted to install a three-speed clutchless gearbox, which they say will be perfectly suited to inner-city driving.</p> <p>Finally, Audi confirmed its upcoming refreshed <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/audi-r8-e-tron-gets-digital-rear-view-mirror/news">R8 supercar</a> would be offered in all-electric e-tron and hybrid guises. It can also accelerate from 0-62mph in less than five seconds and go on to a top speed of 200mph, despite weighing nearly three tonnes.</p> <p>Volkswagen also unveiled a race-ready XL Sport version of its ultra-efficient XL1 model. Secondly, it&#39;s not destined for production, which means it will cost an absolute fortune should you desperately want one.</p> <p><strong>It doesn&#39;t look anywhere near as menacing as recent Lambo concepts... </strong><br />Designers have deliberately taken a &#39;softer&#39; approach with this one because Lamborghini wanted to create a sophisticated cruiser rather than an insane track-day demon. The seats are cosseting and set higher in the cabin for a better view of the road, the ride is set-up for comfort and there&#39;s even a multitude of handy gadgetry inside. But the exterior does echo elements of the legendary Miura, which can never be construed as a bad thing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1265" height="900" title="Lamborghini Asterion" alt="Lamborghini Asterion" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Lamborghini-Asterion_LPI910-4_Concept_2014_1600x1200_wallpaper_03.jpg?1412993797" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1281" height="900" title="Lamborghini Asterion" alt="Lamborghini Asterion" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Lamborghini-Asterion_LPI910-4_Concept_2014_1600x1200_wallpaper_01.jpg?1412993797" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Did you say gadgets? <em>Inside</em> a Lamborghini? </strong><br />Yes we did, because the Asterion is no way near as sparse and &#39;race ready&#39; as some of its supercar siblings. There&#39;s a stylish TFT display behind the steering wheel that presents a plethora of pin-sharp driving information and there is even a large tablet device in the centre console that controls most of the car&#39;s functions. This tablet can also be removed and used to check things like climate and battery charge status remotely. We assume it can also be used to browse the web, play music and do all manner of tablet-y things outside of the car. Finally, the steering wheel features a button that toggles between three driving modes: &quot;Zero&quot; for full electric, &quot;Ibrido&quot; or hybrid, and &quot;Termico&quot; or thermal for full-fat power.</p> <p><strong>What on earth does Asterion mean anyway? </strong><br />The car is actually called the Lamborghini LPI-910-4 Asterion, to give it its full designation. But in short, Lambo likes to name its cars after bulls and - without giving you a lecture in Greek mythology - Asterion was a &#39;ruler of the stars&#39; who had to assume the form of a half-man, half-bull Minotaur thing to accomplish his life goals. We quite like the idea that the Asterion&#39;s petrol-burning components are bovine while its fancy electric bits are human. But there&#39;s every chance that Lamborghini didn&#39;t think of it like that. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/volkswagen/ducati-engined-vw-xl1-goes-frugal-fiery-57-seconds/news" target="_blank">This Ducati-engined VW goes from frugal to fiery in 5.7secs&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1252" height="900" title="Lamborghini Asterion" alt="Lamborghini Asterion" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Lamborghini-Asterion_LPI910-4_Concept_2014_1600x1200_wallpaper_09.jpg?1412993797" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1256" height="900" title="Lamborghini Asterion" alt="Lamborghini Asterion" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Lamborghini-Asterion_LPI910-4_Concept_2014_1600x1200_wallpaper_08.jpg?1412993797" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/lamborghinis-hybrid-asterion-supercar-sensible-hat/news#comments Cars Electric cars Hot Stuff Hybrid cars Fri, 10 Oct 2014 12:04:53 +0000 Fraser Macdonald 1449797 at http://www.stuff.tv New Tesla Model S packs twin electric motors and Autopilot http://www.stuff.tv/model-s/new-tesla-model-s-packs-twin-electric-motors-and-autopilot/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Elon Musk&#039;s most powerful electric car ever can read speed limit signs and avoid crashes, too </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesla Model S P85D" alt="Tesla Model S P85D" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/tesla-model-s-p85d.jpg?1412996217" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Tesla has taken the wraps off its latest electric car &ndash; a specced-up version of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tesla-model-s/review" target="_blank">Model S</a> that adds a second electric motor between the front wheels.</p> <p>You&#39;ll be able to add the dual drive option to all three versions of the Model S; on the most powerful version of the car, the Model S P85D, that second motor allows it to deliver a staggering 682bhp and 930Nm of torque. it&#39;ll go from 0 to 60mph in 3.2 seconds &ndash; a full second faster than the Model S P85.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Set the controls for the heart of the sun </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Tesla is also kitting out all Model S cars with a new &quot;Autopilot&quot; suite of active safety features; it uses a combination of GPS, long-range forward-looking radar, an image-recognition camera, and long-range sonar to monitor the car&#39;s surroundings.</p> <p>That means the car can now automatically park itself, and even drive up to where you&#39;re waiting for it, as long as you&#39;re on private property.
