Musk noted that new-generation battery packs will significantly expand the Roadster&rsquo;s battery life from the current 245 mile range to about 400, allowing the nonstop benchmark drive between Los Angeles and San Francisco, California to become a reality.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/tesla/87867/tesla-model-iii-to-challenge-bmw-3-series-world-exclusive">Auto Express</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/tesla/stuff-meets-elon-musk/feature">Stuff meets Elon Musk</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Tesla Model S" alt="Tesla Model S" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tesla-model-s-rev.jpg?1405680249" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tesla&#039;s affordable electric sedan </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/model-s/tesla-motors-model-iii-smaller-cheaper-and-planned-2017/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/model-s/tesla-motors-model-iii-smaller-cheaper-and-planned-2017/news#comments Cars Electric cars Model S Tesla Wed, 16 Jul 2014 04:03:47 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1442231 at http://www.stuff.tv Plug-in baby: Hands on with Audi’s fuel-sipping A3 e-tron Sportback http://www.stuff.tv/audi/plug-baby-hands-audi-s-fuel-supping-a3-e-tron-sportback/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Are you riddled with range anxiety? The car will sync with your mobile phone to recognize your proximity and automatically adjust the seats and mirrors to match your preferences.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can also get alerts on your phone for when you need to leave for an appointment based on traffic, plus Jaguar&rsquo;s service can automatically message colleagues or friends when you&rsquo;re running late on the road. All told, Jaguar says the system should minimise driver distraction &ldquo;with an eventual goal of zero accidents.&rdquo; A lofty objective, indeed.</p> <p>And if you&rsquo;d like your daily commute to feel more like a video game, Jaguar also has plans for a Virtual Windscreen, which can project info like speed, hazard alerts, navigational info, and even a racing line upon the glass&mdash;not to mention a &ldquo;ghost car&rdquo; image to help you beat your past best times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/F923EuB06CI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That&rsquo;ll have more benefit on the raceway than the average road, but there are more practical purposes as well. And Jaguar is looking at killing rear view and external mirrors by using cameras and 3D imaging to maintain a sense of depth within the video feed.</p> <p>In short? Jaguar has interesting ideas afoot, and we&rsquo;ll be excited to see some of these in action. However, both are pegged as concepts for now, so it could be years before your next Range Rover auto-directs you based on your calendar, or lets you race an A.I. version of yourself through the countryside.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://newsroom.jaguarlandrover.com/en-in/jlr-corp/news/2014/07/jlr_selflearningcar_090714/">Jaguar Land Rover Media Centre</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/f-type/how-do-you-make-jaguar-f-type-better-you-make-it-faster/feature">How do you make the Jaguar F-Type better? &ldquo;You make it faster&rdquo;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="675" title="Jaguar Virtual Windscreen" alt="Jaguar Virtual Windscreen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/jaguar-virtualwind.jpeg?1404956123" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/jaguar/jaguar-land-rover-unveils-smart-assistant-and-virtual-windscreen-concepts/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/jaguar/jaguar-land-rover-unveils-smart-assistant-and-virtual-windscreen-concepts/news#comments Cars Jaguar Land Rover Wed, 09 Jul 2014 20:57:44 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1441563 at http://www.stuff.tv Volkswagen's super-efficient XL1 delivers 313mpg – for £98,000 http://www.stuff.tv/icon-%E2%80%93-volkswagen-xl1/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> VW&#039;s hybrid wonder-car goes on sale in the UK – but you&#039;ll need to be quick, only 30 are on offer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="VW XL1" alt="VW XL1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/vw-xl1-01.jpg?1404568981" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>What&rsquo;s the big deal with this Vee-Dub?</strong><br />As well as looking rather splendid, Volkswagen&#39;s super-efficient XL1 is now on sale in Britain. How does it manage that?&nbsp;</strong><br />First and foremost, it&rsquo;s a hybrid vehicle sporting two engines: an 27hp electric motor takes you up to 22mph, then a diesel engine kicks in and powers it all the way up to its (electronically limited) top speed of 99mph. An aerodynamically optimised teardrop-shape body increases fuel efficiency; VW&#39;s even done away with wing mirrors, replacing them with streamlined cameras. The XL1 is&nbsp;also incredibly lightweight at 795kg, thanks to Volkwagen&rsquo;s use of materials such as aluminium, magnesium and ceramics.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="VW XL1" alt="VW XL1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/vw-xl1-02.jpg?1404568981" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="VW XL1" alt="VW XL1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/vw-xl1-03.jpg?1404568981" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Anything else I should know?&nbsp;</strong><br />Assuming you keep the speed under 22mph, it can travel 35km on a charge (at which point the diesel engine will take over, so you won&rsquo;t get stranded). What&rsquo;s certain is that, just as General Motors inspired future-gazing 1950s consumers to buy cars with rocketship tailfins in the era of the first space race, Tesla is following a similar line, selling you a vision of the future so ambitious it could be taken from a comic book.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Dragon.jpg?1404229125" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> “hey Larry, can I see your will, please?” </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The idea that he could help propel humanity to the stars is also helpful in justifying Musk&rsquo;s vast wealth. While a lot of people find it morally questionable that there are billionaires on a planet with so many hungry mouths, Musk seems like he could be exempt, because he has important plans for all that money. Fellow billionaire Larry Page certainly agrees: the Google co-founder recently said he&rsquo;d rather bequeath his immense fortune to Musk than a charity, because Musk would &lsquo;do more with it&rsquo;.</p> <p>&ldquo;Oh yeah&hellip; I know Larry well, but I&rsquo;ve never actually brought that up in conversation, like &ldquo;hey Larry, can I see your will, please?&rdquo;</p> <p>But would he accept it? Musk considers for a moment.</p> <p>&ldquo;Yeah, sure, okay. Mostly what I would use it for is building a base on Mars. Because there&rsquo;s an initial cost to establish the essential infrastructure that&rsquo;s quite high, and you don&rsquo;t have an immediate return, because you can&rsquo;t charge people a billion dollars each to go there. So you&rsquo;ve got to carry it to the point at which someone can sell their house on Earth, move to Mars and get a job - at that point, I think it becomes a self-sustaining business. They use three different versions, and if you look at the submarine version and the car version, there&rsquo;s no way those pods could turn into one another. We&rsquo;re going to create a submarine that looks just like it, only about 10% bigger, but it will work as both a car and a sub, and it&rsquo;ll use the Model S motor and battery pack. It&rsquo;s a low-priority project; we might make more than one, but single digits.
