Both are in a constant push-pull struggle in an attempt to balance the amount of hands-on features with the overall bulk. The G16 does well here, offering similar features to the P7800 in what feels like a significantly smaller form.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon G16 hot shoe" alt="Canon G16 hot shoe" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CanonG16Extras2.JPG?1392860099" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Canon G16: fast </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Compared to other compacts, it&#39;s the G16&#39;s speed that really marks it out. There&#39;s no impression of focus or depth of field, for example, and no information overlay. It comes unstuck with movement - not so much the movement of your subjects but the camera itself. Panning can appear rather jerky and zooming while filming is achieved in a series of small stages rather than one seamless motion.</p> <p>You might also notice a slight flickering, which appears to be caused by continuous alterations to the exposure levels. Via an Android and iOS app you can transfer pictures rather more easily to a phone or tablet, and direct printing to Wi-Fi printers really is a worthwhile addition.</p> <p>You also get a few creative photography tricks thrown in, such as the star modes that allow you to watch the night sky burn into the screen as it exposes or create stary time-lapse movies. A neutral density filter is also available which lets you take longer exposures in daylight, perhaps for blurring the motion of a waterfall or turning shoppers on a high street into ghostly Nikon&rsquo;s entry-level 3200 has in-camera photography lessons, but because Canon&rsquo;s guide lives on the larger, separate screen of your phone, it&rsquo;s very user-friendly, with video tutorials, guides, explanations of why your shot went wrong and photo challenges. About 30% of the app is specific to the 1200D, with some nice animations that explain to photo-n00bs what the different dials do. The remaining 70% covers the principles of photography in general, and pays more attention than most to subjective (and arguably more useful) subjects like composition. It even tells you how to hold the camera, and what stance to adopt for stability. With that in mind we&rsquo;d recommend it to anyone interested in developing their skills (if you&rsquo;ll pardon the pun), whatever the camera.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten">Stuff&#39;s Top 10 DSLRs and system cameras</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="appy snapper" alt="Canon EOS 1200D with companion app" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20140211_103147.jpg?1392633108" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="appy snapper" alt="Canon EOS 1200D with companion app" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20140211_103215.jpg?1392633108" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="appy snapper" alt="Canon EOS 1200D with companion app" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20140211_103231.jpg?1392633108" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="appy snapper" alt="Canon EOS 1200D with companion app" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_20140211_103247.jpg?1392633108" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-eos-1200d-hands-review/feature#comments Cameras Canon EOS EOS 1100D Wed, 12 Feb 2014 12:49:35 +0000 Will Dunn 1432332 at http://www.stuff.tv Canon PowerShot N100 takes a selfie and a front shot at the same time http://www.stuff.tv/canon/ces-2014/canon-powershot-n100-takes-selfie-and-front-shot-same-time/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> New compact’s rear-facing Story Camera will capture your mood while you’re taking photos or videos </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon PowerShot N100" alt="Canon PowerShot N100" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/canon-powershot-n100-main.jpg?1389620896" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>With its new PowerShot N100, Canon is taking its cues from the world of smartphones. The step up in size from the entry-level 700D is notable enough &ndash; it&rsquo;s taller, fatter and has a far bigger grip &ndash; but put it next to a CSC such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/hands-olympus-om-d-e-m1/feature" target="_blank">Olympus OMD-EM1</a> and it feels needlessly hefty. Alright, so much of the extra bulk comes from the mirror inside it, which CSCs don&rsquo;t have, but given Canon released the diminutive 100D DSLR only a few months ago, we&rsquo;d have thought it could have turned its shrinking beam on the 70D too.</p> <p>On the other hand, it might be a deliberate move: pick it up and you instantly feel as if you&rsquo;re holding a serious camera, one made for big, expensive lenses and weighty photography projects. (Not that the 70D is itself weighty: at 755g it&#39;s remarkably light.) It also allows for an abundance of manual controls. You get the lot here &ndash; everything from autofocus mode to metering to drive type gets a dedicated button, and all are easily accessible with your shooting hand.</p> <p>And then there&rsquo;s the touchscreen. It&rsquo;s the most obvious physical change from the 60D, and enables swift amendments to virtually any setting via the &lsquo;Q&rsquo; menu. You can also use it to swipe through or pinch-zoom into pics &ndash; very handy, this &ndash; or even set focus points and shoot when in Live View mode. More on that later. It&rsquo;s responsive in use, razor-sharp to look at and doesn&rsquo;t really have any drawbacks, but we still found ourselves using physical controls for most standard shooting options. The screen&rsquo;s flip-outability, on the other hand, soon becomes essential &ndash; particularly so for video, when lying down mid-shot to get just the right angle isn&rsquo;t that practical. Well, not in the kind of videos we make anyway.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The needlessly hefty 70D" alt="The needlessly hefty 70D" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1013.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="No more crawling on the floor mid-shot thanks to the 70D&#039;s flip-out screen " alt="No more crawling on the floor mid-shot thanks to the 70D&#039;s flip-out screen " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1032.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="No shrinking beam here " alt="No shrinking beam here " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_0972.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="OK so this isn&#039;t new but it&#039;s a mode dial all the same " alt="OK so this isn&#039;t new but it&#039;s a mode dial all the same " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1043.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HOCUS POCUS AUTOFOCUS </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 70D&rsquo;s killer feature is its new autofocus system. Why? We could get all technical and start talking about the difference between contrast-detection and phase-detection sensors, but that&rsquo;s not really what you want to know. The important thing is that while DSLRs have generally had the edge over CSCs when shooting fast-moving subjects through the viewfinder, it&rsquo;s been a different story once you switch to Live View. And video on a DSLR? You&rsquo;re on your own. But that&rsquo;s all changed on the 70D, which uses a fancy new setup called Dual Pixel AF to improve matters. Don&rsquo;t worry, that&rsquo;s as technical as we&rsquo;ll get. Live View mode is massively improved. For starters, it&rsquo;s quick to focus, especially so with a more advanced USM or STM lens such as the EF-S 18-135mm STM lens our test camera shipped with. This is a major change over previous Canon DSLRs, which would usually hunt for a while before settling down, especially in low light.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s also extremely accurate &ndash; often more so than shooting through the viewfinder, in fact. Coupled with the vari-angle and touch-sensitive screen, it&rsquo;s a powerful tool: we found ourselves taking shots that would&rsquo;ve been impossible through a viewfinder, using the screen to both select the subject and trigger the shutter from awkward angles. It&rsquo;s not quite perfect though. There&rsquo;s no subject-tracking when shooting continuously in Live View, so for fast action you&rsquo;ll still be better off with the viewfinder. But for portraits, landscapes and macro, it&rsquo;s superb.</p> <p>Switch to the viewfinder instead and you&rsquo;ll be using a fast, accurate conventional DSLR autofocus system with 19 focus points. You can let the camera choose the focus point for you &ndash; something it generally does very well &ndash; or specify an autofocus zone to narrow things down a bit. The speediest choice of all is to set a single point and use the focus-and-recompose technique to aim at your subject. None of this is revolutionary, but it is an improvement on its predecessor, the 60D, and the entry-level 700D, both of which have to make do with 9 autofocus points. In practice, it works excellently, nailing focus almost every time and tracking fast-moving subjects accurately when you want it to.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Autofocus system is the 70D&#039;s killer feature " alt="Autofocus system is the 70D&#039;s killer feature " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1047.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Fast-moving bird, consider yourself tracked " alt="Fast-moving bird, consider yourself tracked " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon-EOS-70D-review-autofocus-sample.png?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> STILL SUPERB </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A good autofocus system obviously helps you take sharp pictures, but it&rsquo;s far from the only factor. Fortunately, the new 20.2MP sensor inside the 70D doesn&rsquo;t let the side down either. It&rsquo;s Canon&rsquo;s first 20MP-plus crop sensor &ndash; a nice change after the 18MP effort that featured in no fewer than 8 Canon DSLRs &ndash; although it&rsquo;s still smaller than those found in some rivals. <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/nikon/nikon-d3200/review" target="_blank">Nikon&rsquo;s entry-level D3200</a>, for instance, has 24.2MP. But megapixels don&rsquo;t make much difference once you get past 10-15MP, and of more importance is the fact it takes very nice pictures with good contrast, nice colours and well-controlled noise.</p> <p>In fact low noise is one of the key image improvements over the 60D and 700D. Like the full-frame 5D Mk III and 6D, the 70D uses Canon&#39;s Digic 5+ processor, and this helps it shoot at high ISOs without images ever getting too muddy. Realistically, you can trust it at ISO 3200 &ndash; we&rsquo;d never shoot our aging 550D above 800 &ndash; but shots taken at ISO 6400 are fine if you&rsquo;re not blowing them up too big. Let&rsquo;s be honest: you won&rsquo;t do anything with them except leave them on your hard drive for eternity anyway. And even ISO 25600 is fine for that.</p> <p>The Digic 5+ processor also speeds up burst shooting on the 70D. It can rattle off 7fps, which is fast enough that it can probably capture each beat of a hummingbird&rsquo;s wings, if you have a hummingbird to hand and nothing better to do. Sensibly, there&rsquo;s a low-speed continuous shooting option available for those of us who don&rsquo;t have the patience to wade through hundreds of shots which are almost, but not quite, identical. Still, nice option to have.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Digic 5+ processor helps with shooting at high ISOs, like ISO 1600 here " alt="The Digic 5+ processor helps with shooting at high ISOs, like ISO 1600 here " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon-EOS-70D-review-high-ISO-sample.png?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon’s first 20MP-plus crop sensor impresses" alt="Canon’s first 20MP-plus crop sensor impresses" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/canon-70D-review-sample-shot-detail.jpg?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Close-up shots are superb too" alt="Close-up shots are superb too" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon-EOS-70D-review-sample-shot-close-up.jpg?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" title="Good contrast, nice colours and well-controlled noise " alt="Good contrast, nice colours and well-controlled noise " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon-EOS-70D-review-motorbike.jpg?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> MOVIE STAR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The other area where the 70D&rsquo;s new Dual Pixel AF excels is when shooting video. Until now, any video shot on a DSLR would likely include whole sections where you lost focus as your subjects moved around. Unless you were particularly skilled at manually focusing, that is, but we&rsquo;re not. The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon-eos-700d/review" target="_blank">700D</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon/canon-eos-100d/review" target="_blank">100D</a> improved matters a little, but neither nailed it in the way the 70D does, autofocusing swiftly as you move from subject to subject and even tracking people&rsquo;s faces as they walk around. As with Live View shooting, it&rsquo;s not quite flawless &ndash; track someone as they move across a room and there&rsquo;ll likely be a frame or two that misses focus. But it&rsquo;s massively improved over any previous DSLR.</p> <p>Footage itself is sharp, although with full HD only available in 24, 25 or 30fps flavours, it&rsquo;s not the best out there. The lack of a headphone port is a major omission too, meaning there&rsquo;s no way to monitor sound output. So it&rsquo;s not one for professionals, but for the average person making holiday movies and films of their kids&rsquo; school plays, it&rsquo;ll do fine.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Almost flawless footage " alt="Almost flawless footage " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1035.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HOT WI-FI </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Like fingerprint sensors on phones and stupid haircuts on hipsters, Wi-Fi is de rigeur for new cameras. The 70D is far from the first DSLR to feature it &ndash; Canon&rsquo;s own 6D has it, for starters &ndash; but it&rsquo;s welcome all the same. You can use it to connect to your smartphone, tablet or computer, then view and download pictures directly to them, shoot via the EOS Utility program or EOS Remote app, upload to social media or Canon&rsquo;s own Image Gateway, view images on a DLNA-equipped TV or print to a wireless printer.</p> <p>For the most part, it works slickly and being able to view and download shots on the fly is massively helpful. Shooting via the Remote app is also a boon when you&rsquo;re using a tripod; macro addicts will get a lot of use from it. And more importantly, using it makes you feel like Ansel Adams&rsquo; great-great-great-great-grandson in the year 2100. Setting up remote shooting on a PC or Mac is a bit more fiddly, but hardly rocket science &ndash; though admittedly, connecting via a USB cable is easier and usually just as practical. Strangely, using Wi-Fi disables movie mode, and all-too-commonly it also runs down battery life, so you won&rsquo;t want to leave it on continuously &ndash; but it&rsquo;s a feature you&rsquo;ll use lots all the same.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> VERDICT </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 70D is Canon&rsquo;s best DSLR for ages. While its recent entry-level models have been near flawless in their own right, they&rsquo;ve not really offered anything that might make compact system camera users sit up and take notice. But the 70D does exactly that. Dual Pixel AF improves Live View and Video modes to the extent that there&rsquo;s really little difference between the 70D and most top CSCs on autofocus, and with a bigger sensor inside the Canon it&rsquo;ll arguably take better pictures. Plus, with Wi-Fi and a flippable touchscreen on board, there&rsquo;s not much between them on features either.</p> <p>Prices are comparable too and while the 70D is expensive, we&rsquo;d expect to see real-world prices come down quite quickly. So the choice basically boils down to whether you&rsquo;re more bothered about the small size of the latest mirrorless cams, or the better lens range and bigger sensor of a DSLR. We can&rsquo;t make that decision for you, but we can promise that if you buy a 70D you won&rsquo;t regret it.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The 70D is Canon&#039;s best DSLR in ages " alt="The 70D is Canon&#039;s best DSLR in ages " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1000.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Better lens range, bigger sensor - worth the chunk " alt="Better lens range, bigger sensor - worth the chunk " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/2013_11_1016.JPG?1389692375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> stills </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> video </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Canon EOS 70D is a supremely well-featured DSLR which can shoot beautiful pictures and great video. There are three Star modes which make it very easy to shoot night skies. Usually this is tricky on a compact as you'll typically be limited to a 30-second exposure and have trouble setting the focus in the dead of night. The S120's Star Trail feature handles all of that for you, exposing for about an hour and a half (battery permitting), building up a composite of long exposures over that time. You can call it quits whenever you like, and because you get a live preview on the LCD there's no guesswork involved. You can also opt for a single long exposure or make a timelapse movie of the night sky. It's also refreshing to have a generous maximum exposure time of 250 seconds in manual mode.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon S120 Star mode" alt="Canon S120 star trails" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Stars-1_0.JPG?1384340533" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Neutral Density Filter </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can even take long exposures in daylight thanks to the internal neutral density filter feature. At times the S120's controls and menus are baffling and infuriating. There's no manual in the box, so unless you seek it out online and give it a thorough reading, you could easily miss some of the camera's features because they're so deeply woven into the operating system. At times, the markings on the physical controls seem to bear no relation to their current function, or refuse to perform a function at all.</p> <p>Usability is aided to a degree by the half-baked touchscreen implementation. Entering passwords and the like for the Wi-Fi set-up would be a lot harder without it, but this is countered by the disconcerting bleeps that go off randomly whenever you're holding the camera without actually shooting anything. It's possible to adjust the touchscreen's sensitivity or turn it off altogether, but that's not something a camera user should have to contend with.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon S120 touchscreen" alt="Touchscreen" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CanonS120-3.JPG?1384340533" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon S120 art filters" alt="Canon S120 art filters" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CanonS120-Test-1.JPG?1384340533" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-8"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wi-Fi and battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Battery performance is disappointing. How long the battery lasts will depend on how you use it, but in our tests it ran out of juice worryingly quickly, cutting short our field trip as we returned to base to plug it into the mains charger. It's a problem that's magnified by the USB connectivity. There is a USB port (although it's not marked as such) but it's the older USB Mini B type rather than the Micro B type used on modern phones, and there's no USB cable in the box so you'll have to go hunting around for an old cable if you want to charge and transfer files via USB.</p> <p>That puts greater emphasis on the proudly badged Wi-Fi skills. Unfortunately the Wi-Fi features are almost a complete disaster. Out of the box there's very little guidance on how to set up the various, theoretically possible ways of sharing and transfering images and videos via email, Facebook and Twitter, or between other cameras, mobile devices and computers. Canon has crammed in nearly all of the features found on its big sister, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/canon-eos-700d/review" target="_blank">700D</a>, but in a body that's roughly 30 per cent smaller, 10 per cent thinner and 30 per cent lighter. Put it next to the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/panasonic/panasonic-lumix-dmc-g5/review" target="_blank">Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5</a> compact system camera and there's really very little between them. Alright, so unless your name is Coco you won't be slipping one in your pocket, but you'll definitely notice the benefit with one slung around your neck.</p> <p>Build quality is good; it lacks the weatherproofing and retro-tastic design flair of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m5/review" target="_blank">Olympus OMD-EM5</a>, but it's on a par with other entry-level DSLRs. It also handles surprisingly well – the right-hand grip is just big enough to get a decent hold on it, and its light weight means the lack of any real left-hand support is rarely an issue. Or at least that's the case with an equally lightweight lens; stick a hefty bit of glass such as the EF-S 15-85mm on it and it begins to feel unbalanced.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20comparison%20w%20700D%20front.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Counting our losses </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The most obvious physical compromise over the Canon 700D is the loss of the flippable LCD – the 100D instead has to make do with a fixed 3in touchscreen. It's likely to get plenty of use, too, because manual controls have been stripped back a little from bigger models – let's call that compromise No2. You still get a proper mode dial (which, like the 700D but unlike previous models turns 360 degrees), plus dedicated ISO, exposure compensation and Live View buttons. But the likes of white balance and drive mode have lost their shortcuts and can now only be accessed via the Q menu. And if none of this matters to you because you only shoot in Auto mode, please sell your DSLR and buy a compact camera instead. You also lose the 700D's stereo mics and have to make do with a smaller battery (compromises No3 and No4).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20comparison%20w%20700D%20back.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20back.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20Top%20dial%201.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Snap very happy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The 100D has the same 18MP CMOS sensor as that in the 650D and 700D (well, almost – we'll come to that) so it's no surprise that picture quality is every bit as good. There's masses of detail in shots, with little noise until ISO 1600. Indeed, images are perfectly usable at ISO 3200 and 6400 if you're not blowing them up too big. Colours tend towards neutral, but you can easily change saturation and tone in-camera, or do it later if you shoot in RAW. Autofocus is generally swift and accurate when shooting through the viewfinder, but – compromise No5 – only 1 of its 9 focus points is of the faster cross-type. Don't get too hung up about this kind of thing unless you spend lots of time snapping Usain Bolt, though. Burst shooting is limited to 4fps. This might sound like a lot of marketing guff, but in practice it makes a huge difference. The 700D is often painfully slow to focus in Live View, particularly in low light, but the 100D is far faster to lock on to subjects, even in low-contrast situations. The viewfinder will still almost always be quicker, but there are times when Live View is the better option – for instance when shooting macro – so Canon gets a pat on the back here. Video shooting benefits too, with far less hunting for focus when you switch subjects.</p> <p>The 100D's new kit lens, the snappily titled EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM, also helps here. The STM part refers to its "stepper" tech, which ensures it switches focus smoothly between subjects rather than jumping about like a three-year-old after a Haribo binge. Whatever the technology behind it, the net result is silky smooth 1080p (at 24, 25 or 30fps) footage that will make for many a fine holiday memento, if only you could be bothered to edit it into shape one day.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="5184" height="3456" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20sample%20pic%209%20macro.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="5184" height="3456" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20sample%20pic%206%20landscape.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> But what&#039;s the point? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Despite all these positives, we have one big problem with the 100D. Namely, who needs one? What niche does it fill? Why would anyone buy one? Its small size is its main selling point, but it's still bigger than any premium compact camera, even large-sensor models such as the Sony DSC-RX100 and Fuji X100S. More importantly, the advantage of owning a DSLR is surely that you can use it with multiple lenses. Take more than one lens out with you and you'll need a bag – and once you do that, the smaller size of the 100D is negated. Likewise, if you stick a fast zoom or telephoto lens on the front of it, that small body won't make much difference to the lens-heavy overall package. None of this would matter if the 100D shared all the features of the 700D, but it doesn't.</p> <p>Comparisons to compact system cameras are more favourable, of course. The 100D's body is almost as small, but it supports standard, full-size lenses from the box. The problem is that while micro four-thirds lenses are in size and weight proportion to micro four-thirds bodies, the 100D's small frame is too frequently negated by the big, heavy lens that's attached.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20front.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Canon 100D is a great camera with many plus points. Likewise if you're into the idea of something compact system camera-sized but with built-in support of full-size lenses - even if that makes the complete camera rather front-heavy. We suspect that for most people, though, the 100D's cons will just about outweigh the pros.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20100D%20logo.JPG?1377490504" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> stills </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> video </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 8 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Nearly a hit, but the 100D's small stature doesn't quite make up for its stripped-back features</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> Canon System Cameras Fri, 23 Aug 2013 11:27:43 +0000 Tom Parsons 1425798 at http://www.stuff.tv Canon EOS 700D http://www.stuff.tv/canon-eos-700d/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> It&#039;s a new entry-level Canon DSLR! The EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM is aimed squarely at HD video addicts and uses Canon&#39;s &quot;stepper&quot; tech to ensure smooth focusing transitions within scenes.</p> <p>And it works really well. Focusing when shooting video is both quicker and quieter than with the old model kit lens, with fewer distracting jumps when changing subjects. Coupled with the 700D&#39;s ability to continuously autofocus in Live View &ndash; a feature first found on the 650D &ndash; and its supremely detailed 1080p (at 24, 25 or 30fps) footage, it makes for a fine option for home movie makers. That said, this kind of thing is old hat to many compact system cameras, and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/olympus/olympus-om-d-e-m5/review" target="_blank">Olympus OMD-EM5</a> (<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten" target="_blank">our favourite camera in the world right now</a>) still focuses a little faster when shooting movies.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20kit%20lens.JPG?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20lens.JPG?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Picture perfect </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Ultimately the lack of new features isn&#39;t much of a problem, because the 650D was already a superb camera and the 700D is every bit as good. It may sit at the cheaper end of the DSLR scale, but its 18MP CMOS sensor serves up fantastic images in every regard, and right up to ISO 1600. At 3200 and 6400 images are a bit noisy but eminently usable, and it&#39;s only really the very high 12800 and the silly 25600 extended mode that aren&#39;t worth bothering with, which is to be expected really. Colours are typically Canon, so on the neutral side. The balance is easily tweakable if you want results that are a bit punchier - go to the picture settings, up the saturation, contrast and sharpness by a few notches and make it the default, and you&#39;ll never need to do it again. Or you can shoot in RAW for the ultimate control.</p> <p>For more sample snaps in full resolution, check out out Flickr set <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/sets/72157635185062250/" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%206.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%201.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%2010%20toys.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20Sample%20pic%2011%20creative%20filter.jpg?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Slow and steady </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Autofocus is good &ndash; the camera usually locks on to your subject like an SAS sniper, although with only 9 focus points (albeit all of the superior cross-type), rival Nikons theoretically have an advantage here. Many new CSCs may have faster autofocus and smaller bodies, but on the other hand the 700D has a larger sensor, a proper optical viewfinder and a much bigger lens selection. Factor in its price, and it&#39;s simply the best pound-for-pound DSLR on the planet, which is why it replaces the 650D at No.2 in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/system-cameras/top-ten" target="_blank">Top 10 list of the best system cameras in the world</a>.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Canon%20EOS%20700D%20front%202.JPG?1392916619" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> stills </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> video </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Our new favourite DSLR, even if it does look a lot like our old favourite DSLR</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-legacy-url"> <div class="field-label">Legacy URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> /canon/canon-eos-700d/review </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Meet your next SLR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-standfirst"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item standfirst:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Canon&#039;s outstanding EOS 700D reviewed </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Camcorders Canon System Cameras Thu, 22 Aug 2013 09:59:53 +0000 Tom Parsons 1425754 at http://www.stuff.tv Hands-on review: Canon’s awesomely powerful G16 and S120 compact cameras http://www.stuff.tv/canon/hands-review-canon-s-g16-and-s120-power-cameras-show-your-camphone-how-it-s-done/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Call that a photo? In our hands-on time with both cameras, shots taken at high ISO settings of even 3200 and 6400 (it goes up to 12,800) were impressively noise-free.</p> <p>More impressive still was their speed. These things really fly, with burst shooting at a stupidly quick 12 frames per second for the first 5 shots dropping to 9fps for the next 500-odd.</p> <p>No, that’s not a typo – you can basically keep shooting at 9.3fps until you fill a card. Buffering is non-existent. They make a great sound while doing so too –&nbsp;like some kind of digital grasshopper.</p> <p>DIGIC 6 is also likely behind the video boost, which sees both cameras able to shoot full HD footage at a silk-smooth 60fps – a first for a Canon camera.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> night sky skills </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>More interesting still are the two new creative filters: Star and Background Defocus. Star looks like great fun. We weren’t able to try it out during our hands-on time with the camera (on account of it being midday, and sunny) but it enables snappers to take pics of the night sky in three different ways.</p> <p>Star Nightscape, as you’d expect, will use the cameras’ impressive low-light abilities to get atmospheric shots of the stars; Star Trails does some clever things with long exposure to get lovely circular trails; and Star Time-lapse takes several short movies then stitches them together for – you guessed it – a time-lapse. The examples we saw looked brilliant.</p> <p>Background Defocus, meanwhile, lets you blur the background of a pic for that nice bokeh-y effect that’s de rigueur these days. You can dial up or down the extent, and it looks like a useful feature to have. Both cameras also have several other creative filters, including HDR, fish-eye and monochrome, for those who like that kind of thing.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Canon S120 rear" alt="Canon S120 rear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/PowerShot-S120-black-back.jpg?1377155193" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> amazingly, this Wi-Fi could be useful </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Although Wi-Fi hasn’t been seen on a G-series cam before, we did get it on last year’s S110. If you like your photos crisp, clean (at lower ISOs) and blessed with accurate colours, and if you crave an autofocus that doesn't spend three seconds hunting for a lock, then the G15 ticks all those boxes. And as with most Canons, it'll also record lovely 1080p video at a filmic 24fps.&nbsp;</p> <p>The optical viewfinder aids framing in bright sunlight and also helps you keep the G15 steadier when you're shooting. Another boon when shooting outdoors is the fact that the lens ring can be taken off and replaced with a filter adapter, making the Canon one of the only pro compacts able to use a polarising filter.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> No Tilting </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Although smaller and lighter than previous G-series cameras, the G15 still feels almost tank-like in its solidity and sturdiness. It looks like it will survive a fall. But unlike predecessors like the G12, the G15's screen is fixed rather than tiltable. We suspect it's been done to cut down the bulk of the camera but it's a feature we miss.</p> <p>Also canned is the ISO dial used on older models which is another shame though the G15's second dial does allow you to quickly change the exposure compensation.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Is the G15 perfect? Not quite. It's much smaller than its predecessor the G12, and that's led to the odd compromise; as we mentioned there's no dedicated ISO dial or tiltable screen, for starters. But then again this is supposed to be a compact camera, so we won't complain too loudly.&nbsp;</p> <p>The Sony RX1 just pips it overall, but if you need a compact to back up your DSLR and demand the likes of a viewfinder and filters, then this Canon should be the one for you.
