We dropped it onto a hardwood floor to test this and it suffered no ill effects bar a small chip in the paintwork &ndash; the locking latch on the battery/card door ensures that it won&rsquo;t pop open in the impact too.</p> <p>It doesn&rsquo;t stop there. Rubber sealing around the buttons and battery/SD card hatch makes the AW120 fully dust-proof and waterproof to a depth of 18m. While we didn&rsquo;t take it that far below the surface, we did subject the camera to a fairly rigorous bout of rinsing in the dishwasher. After eight solid minutes of intense spraying, it emerged in perfect working order (not to mention markedly cleaner).</p> <p>Finally, Nikon claims the camera can withstand temperatures as low as -10 degrees celsius. Even British summertime and the snowcapped peak of French mountain l&rsquo;Aiguille du Midi couldn&rsquo;t furnish us with that, but we did whack it in the freezer (substantially colder than -10, it should be said) for a few minutes. Again, it emerged unscathed.</p> <p>Aside from its powers of survival, the AW120 impresses with its size and weight: it&rsquo;s very pocket friendly, and will slip into jeans or a jacket without causing any discomfort.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Nikon AW120 is one tough cookie" alt="The Nikon AW120 is one tough cookie" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-stones_0.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="All buttons and ports are fully sealed against dust and water" alt="All buttons and ports are fully sealed against dust and water" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-stones-rear.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Image quality </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Rugged compact cameras aren&rsquo;t generally the go-to snappers for people seeking excellent photo and video quality. There&rsquo;s generally a feeling of compromise when you buy one: you&rsquo;re paying for a decent quality camera that&rsquo;s nigh-on impossible to break rather than a camera built primarily for superb picture quality. They&rsquo;re tough, but the tradeoffs are that the sensors are small, the lenses don&rsquo;t offer much in the way of zoom, the controls are somewhat stripped back etc. etc.</p> <p>The AW120 doesn&rsquo;t do much to dispel this feeling. While we found it offered the best still images out of <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/unbreakables-rugged-cameras-put-test/feature">the three tough cameras we recently reviewed</a>, it won&rsquo;t outperform or match compacts like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-hx60v/review">Sony HX60V</a> or <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/fujifilm/fujifilm-x20/review">Fujifilm X20</a> (try dropping those in the bath, though). We found the metering can be a little off when you zoom in, and the low light performance (sans flash) is a tad disappointing, even with the aperture fully open at f/2.8 (while this setting is only available with the lens fully zoomed out, it&rsquo;s a sizeable upgrade from the AW110, which had a maximum aperture of f/3.9).</p> <p>That said, it has a decent (for a rugged camera) x5 optical zoom range and photos and videos taken in good lighting look lovely: detailed and clean. The HDR mode works well in tricky scenes where there&rsquo;s both bright and dark areas to expose, and full HD 1080p videos are crisp and smooth. Basically, it&rsquo;s an above average compact, and that&rsquo;s about as good as you can expect in a ruggedised model.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/unbreakables-rugged-cameras-put-test/feature">The Unbreakables: rugged cameras put to the test</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="1600" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-main.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-1.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Nikon AW120 sample image" alt="Nikon AW120 sample image" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-test-2.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="4608" height="3456" title="Nikon AW120 macro sample shot" alt="Nikon AW120 macro sample shot" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-macro-test.JPG?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> GP-Yes and Why-oh-Wi-Fi </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One of the main differences between the AW120 and its predecessor the AW110 is a bevy of additional sensors. The AW110 had GPS and could automatically tag photos and videos with location data, but the AW120 adds an electronic compass (so you&rsquo;ll know which way you were facing as well as where you were when you took that shot), Points of Interest (which it plots for you on a viewable map) and functionality for measuring water depth, water pressure, altitude and atmospheric pressure. That might sound overkill, not to mention a surefire way to drain the battery, but we&rsquo;re certain that a lot of adventurous shutterbugs will see them as useful. And if you&rsquo;re not one of them, you can simply turn them all off.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect wirelessly to a computer or mobile device. Now, Wi-Fi on compact cameras tends to be a bit hit-and-miss, and that&rsquo;s the case here &ndash; at least as far as our experience goes. The AW120 did not want to connect to anything we tried to pair it with, and after 10 minutes of poring over the menu settings to try and work out how to remedy that we gave up in a rage. It&rsquo;s a good thing this camera is difficult to break, because we feel a lot of potential Wi-Fi users are going to be hurling it across the room after similar experiences.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The maps feature Points of Interest as well as geotagging" alt="The maps feature Points of Interest as well as geotagging" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nikon-aw120-gps.jpg?1408359220" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon Coolpix AW120 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 16MP CMOS</p> <p><strong>ISO range</strong>: 125-1600 (3200 and 6400 in Auto mode)</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 5x optical zoom f/2.8-4.9</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 921,000-dot LCD</p> <p><strong>Video</strong>: 1080p @ 30/25fps, 1080i @ 60/50fps</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, USB, micro HDMI</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 110 x 66 x 26mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 558g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Useful USB charging </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The AW120 is USB rechargeable (another upgrade over its predecessor), which will mean you can more easily top up the battery in the field (solar chargers etc. will work), features an acceptably sharp screen and offers a potentially useful (if unintuitive) motion control system which could come in handy when you&rsquo;re wearing thick gloves.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nikon Coolpix AW120 verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the AW120 is far from a perfect compact camera, it&rsquo;s important to remember that it&rsquo;s going after a different market than the image quality-focussed premium point-and-shoots that currently populate our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cameras/top-ten">Top Ten</a>. Oh, and let&#39;s not forget the Wi-Fi.</p> <p><strong>Tough or guff?</strong><br />The bad news is that, predictably, the Wi-Fi&rsquo;s a complete dog &ndash; even after downloading Nikon&rsquo;s dedicated app to our smartphone, we couldn&rsquo;t get the camera to so much as attempt a connection. The good news is that the AW120 survived all the physical torments we&rsquo;d devised for it unscathed (save a tiny scratch in its metal shell). Better still, it takes lovely pictures in both good lighting and dimmer conditions. GLONASS GPS, Wi-Fi and NFC make it one of the smarter ruggedised models on the market.</p> <p><strong>Tough or guff?</strong><br />As with its rivals, the FT5 sailed (or swam, in one case) through all of our trials with ease. Dropping, freezing, soaking &ndash; nothing impacted performance or left a mark on the camera&rsquo;s hardy hide. The NFC and Wi-Fi didn&rsquo;t work properly (we&#39;ve now reviewed around a dozen Wi-Fi cameras and we&rsquo;re honestly more surprised when NFC and Wi-Fi <em>do</em> work), but we managed to manually connect the FT5 and our phone &ndash; this allows you to transfer images and control basic camera operations remotely. The cameras are all of a similar weight, size and price, so there was nothing major to separate them in any of these criteria.</p> <p>There wasn&#39;t much between them when it came to performance either: when it comes to both stills and video, none of the trio will let you down horribly in any everyday shooting situation. That said, our time with the cameras suggested that the Panasonic FT5 was the best for video capture and the Nikon AW120 the best for stills. The Nikon also has the most complete suite of sensors and mapping tools, and while this is hardly a deal-breaker for most, it&#39;s something that we reckon buyers of tough, outdoorsy cameras may well appreciate.</p> <p>So it&#39;s the Nikon Coolpix AW120 that edges our test of the tough cameras.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cameras/top-ten">The 10 best compact cameras in the world right now</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Three tough sons-of-guns" alt="The best rugged and waterproof cameras - tested" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/tough-camera-trio.jpg?1407855579" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Pro tip: A Gorillapod is the perfect way to secure a camera to your dishwasher" alt="The best rugged and waterproof cameras - tested" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/canon-d30-dishwasher.jpg?1407855579" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tested: rugged cameras </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> Cameras Digital compacts Wed, 06 Aug 2014 17:21:39 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1444026 at http://www.stuff.tv Meet the first new Super 8 camera for 30 years http://www.stuff.tv/meet-first-new-super-8-camera-30-years/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We can smell the nostalgia from here. Prices will shoot up to US$5,000 after the first run sells out, so get into impulse purchase mode as quickly as you can.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/hot-stuff" target="_blank">All the hottest stuff, on one scorching page</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> <p>[via <a href="http://www.wired.com/2014/07/logmar-super-8/" target="_blank">Wired</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pretty sure this wasn&#039;t on the original" alt="Meet the first new Super 8 camera for 30 years" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/logmar-super-8.jpg?1407291492" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1024" height="768" title="Aaaaaand, action" alt="Meet the first new Super 8 camera for 30 years" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/logmar-super-8-3.jpg?1407291492" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/meet-first-new-super-8-camera-30-years/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/meet-first-new-super-8-camera-30-years/news#comments Cameras Tue, 05 Aug 2014 14:20:54 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1444100 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: Pentax Q-S1 launching with 40 colour pairings, BioShock coming to iOS, and the white Xbox One will finally reach consumers http://www.stuff.tv/pentax/fully-charged-pentax-q-s1-launching-40-colour-pairings-bioshock-coming-ios-and-white-xbox-one <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Catch up on the morning’s most notable news blips in our latest roundup </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Pentax Q-S1" alt="Pentax Q-S1" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/pentax-q-s1.png?1407295735" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Pentax’s Q-S1 out next month </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/pentax/icon-–-pentax-q/news">Pentax Q line</a> impresses with its rather small stature for a digital camera with interchangeable lenses, and overnight the company announced a new entry: the Q-S1, which will debut in early September with a whopping total of 40 different colour pairings.</p> <p>The handy little shooter has a 1/1.7in back-illuminated CMOS sensor with high-sensitivity shooting up to ISO 12800, along with a shake-reduction system and a 3.0in LCD monitor on the back - and you can shoot full HD videos, even at the higher ISO settings. The wider aperture not only makes the potential shutter speed even faster &ndash; and thus pictures even sharper and less noise-plagued &ndash; it also allows you to achieve a narrow depth of field more easily, making this one of the best compacts around for taking photos and videos with bokeh. And the lens&rsquo; rounded aperture blades make that bokeh look lovely and smooth, as you can see from the above shot. The new processor also helps speed up operation slightly. Oh, and you can still shoot RAW if you wish, which&rsquo;ll please enthusiasts who love to tweak images in Photoshop.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/99712217@N05/14272542408/in/set-72157645200788486/player/" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></p> <p>The G1 X Mark II does however feel a little outmoded in terms of its video capture capabilities. While viewfinders might seem like a relic from photography&rsquo;s analogue days, there are times when they&rsquo;re damn near essential. Framing a shot on the Mark II&rsquo;s LCD screen is fine when you&rsquo;re indoors or at night, but on a blazing sunny day it&rsquo;s hard to make out what&rsquo;s being displayed on there. A viewfinder eliminates that issue, and we were surprised to see neither the original model&rsquo;s simple optical or (even better) a new OLED electronic viewfinder here. Canon sells one of the latter as an optional accessory &ndash; but it&rsquo;s going to cost you another &pound;250 on top of the Mark II&rsquo;s &pound;730 price. Bad move, Canon.</p> <p>The screen, however, is excellent when the conditions are right. At 3in it&rsquo;s the same size as the G1 X&rsquo;s, but slightly clearer thanks to a higher pixel count. It&rsquo;s also touch-sensitive (something that&rsquo;s far from essential on a camera, but occasionally handy here for quickly setting a focus area) and can be twisted to face almost any direction.</p> <p>The control layout has been rejigged, and the camera has not one but two rings around the lens. One (which turns smoothly) is always set to control manual focus, while the other (which moves in clicky increments) is customisable and can be set to control various functions including aperture, exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity. These will come in really handy for shooters who want to manually change settings quickly.</p> <p>Another tangible improvement is to autofocus, which feels a lot brisker and more accurate thanks the big increase in AF areas (Canon claims it&rsquo;s up to 42 percent quicker).</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The flexible screen can even turn 180 degrees for selfie purposes" alt="Canon G1 X Mark II review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/canon-g1x-mkii-hand-back.jpg?1403225560" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Canon G1 X Mark II tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Sensor</strong>: 13.1MP CMOS</p> <p><strong>Max ISO</strong>: 100-12800</p> <p><strong>Lens</strong>: 5x optical zoom f/2.0-3.9</p> <p><strong>Image stabilisation</strong>: Optical</p> <p><strong>Viewfinder</strong>: optional extra</p> <p><strong>Screen</strong>: 3in, 1,040,000-dot touch-sensitive LCD</p> <p><strong>Video formats</strong>: MP4/1080p, 720p and 480p at 30fps</p> <p><strong>Connectivity</strong>: Wi-Fi, NFC,</p> <p><strong>GPS</strong>: via connected mobile phone</p> <p><strong>Dimensions</strong>: 116.3 x 74 x 66.2mm</p> <p><strong>Weight</strong>: 558g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Wi-Fi: Connect poor </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Does NFC stand for &ldquo;no fanks, chum&rdquo;? camera.</p> <p>And while we wouldn&rsquo;t exactly agree with them on the compact part, the Lumix DMC-FZ1000 is an impressive looking camera nonetheless.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-hx60v/review">Sony Cyber-shot HX60V review</a></strong></p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/jools-whitehorn" title="View user profile.">Jools Whitehorn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Panasonic is also keen to point out that with all that extra resolution, you can pull 8MP stills from the video, enabling you to pick the perfect moment from fast-paced action. You also get standard 1080p HD video recording too, natch, and all that excess capacity means it can achieve 100fps for lovely slow-mo action shots.&nbsp;Meanwhile, time-lapse and stop-motion modes allow you to get even more creative. </p> <p>Further treats for movie makers include focus peaking and zebra stripe indicators, both of which can be used on the swivelling 3in 921,000-dot LCD display to let you know what&rsquo;s in focus and get your exposure right on screen. There&rsquo;s also a 2,359,000-dot OLED Live View Finder to put your eye up to in sunny conditions. </p> <p>Being a bridge cam, the lens is fixed in place, but given that it&#39;s a Leica 16x optical zoom lens (25-400mm, 35mm equivalent) with F2.8-4.0 aperture range, it&rsquo;s pretty versatile anyway. Meanwhile, its Hybrid 5-axis Optical Image Stabilisation helps you get a steady shot, even at full zoom. </p> <p>The FZ1000 promises faster autofocus than its predecessors, using Panasonic&rsquo;s Depth from Defocus tech that supposedly makes it 275% faster than its predecessors. That doesn&#39;t tell us an awful lot, but the fact it can apparently achieve focus in as little as 0.09 seconds is undoubtedly impressive. Finally, its electronic shutter mode allows shutter speeds up to 1/16,000 of a second and is completely silent, and there&#39;s&nbsp;Wi-Fi and NFC on hand too - so you can easily upload your snaps or take full remote control of the camera using Panasonic&rsquo;s smartphone and tablet apps.</p> <p>The Panasonic FZ1000 will be available from July for &pound;750.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/cameras/top-ten">These are the 10 best compact cameras in the world right now</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="There are plenty of controls round the back, and an electronic viewfinder" alt="Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Panasonic-FZ1000-bridge-cam-03.jpg?1402629420" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Looks-wise, we&#039;d describe it as &#039;DSLR chic&#039;" alt="Panasonic FZ1000 bridge camera" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Panasonic-FZ1000-bridge-cam-02.jpg?1402629420" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/fz1000/panasonic-s-new-fz1000-bridge-camera-shoots-4k-video/news#comments Cameras FZ1000 Panasonic Thu, 12 Jun 2014 12:08:54 +0000 Marc McLaren 1438965 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy K Zoom http://www.stuff.tv/android-44-kitkat/samsung-galaxy-k-zoom/review <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A high-end Android phone with a 10x optical zoom camera, the Galaxy K Zoom hopes to send your compact to the scrapheap </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Is it a phone? It turned out to be a very close contest. The Nikon sometimes found more detail where the Samsung was inclined to fill pixels with noise and smudges, but the Samsung was generally faster to focus and shoot. Then again, the Nikon was quicker to start up.</p> <p>The dedicated controls of the Nikon make it a lot easier to use. Because of the touchscreen and Android softkeys on the Samsung, it&#39;s easy to accidentally turn it on, off, exit the camera app or launch some other app when all you want to do is shoot. At the risk of running out of hypothetical extremities, on the other hand, the Samsung&#39;s connected nature makes it incredibly easy to edit and share photos directly from the phone. There&#39;s also a dedicated shutter button below your right index finger which can be used as an alternative to the onscreen icon.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-cyber-shot-hx60v/review">Sony Cyber-shot HX60V review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The shot on the left was taken at the wideangle setting, the one on the right at 10x optical zoom" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom 10x example" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ZoomSideBySide.jpg?1402741174" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Here&#039;s an Airbus A380 on its way into Heathrow, captured at 10x optical zoom on the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom" alt="Galaxy K Zoom sample photo" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Flightpath2Scaled.jpg?1402741174" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy K Zoom Tech Specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <ul> <li><strong>OS:</strong>&nbsp;Android 4.4 KitKat</li> <li><strong>CPU:</strong>&nbsp;Exynos 5 Hexa 8-core, 1.7GHz, 1.3GHz</li> <li><strong>Display:</strong>&nbsp;4.8in, 720x1280 IPS touchscreen</li> <li><strong>Memory:</strong>&nbsp;2GB + MicroSD up to 64GB</li> <li><strong>Camera:</strong>&nbsp;20.7MP rear, 2MP front, Xenon flash</li> <li><strong>Video:</strong>&nbsp;1080p @ 60fps</li> <li><strong>Connectivity:</strong>&nbsp;3.5mm headphone socket, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11a/b/g/n 2.4 + 5GHz</li> <li><strong>Size, weight:</strong>&nbsp;138x71x20mm, 200g</li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> APPY TALK </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The K Zoom&#39;s default camera app includes a range of filters and modes but the interface is confusing, requiring far too much guesswork regarding which bits of the display overlays are buttons and which are readouts. That&#39;s sufficient to crunch through the latest 3D games, occasionally peaking at a super-smooth 60fps in EA&#39;s <em>Real Racing 3</em>. Out of the box, it&#39;s rather cluttered, with just four homescreen pages populated by Samsung&#39;s own widgets and what-nots. It feels like moving into a new house full of someone else&#39;s furniture, but it&#39;s easy enough to clear out the junk and add homescreen panes for your own apps.</p> <p>Battery life is surprisingly good, and even after an extended photo jaunt it still had plenty in the tank to see it though the night and the following day without a recharge. Video playback is very satisfying, with the IPS grid much less apparent in live action footage than sharply rendered game graphics, icons and text. Allied to a speaker that goes usefully loud, it makes for a decent YouTube player.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5-prime/samsung-galaxy-s5-prime/review">Everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Power and battery life are sufficient to rip through plenty of games without constant recharging" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/SamsungGalaxyKZoom-2.JPG?1402741174" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Poppies and sunshine, as captured by the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom" alt="Samsung Galaxy K Zoom wide angle" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/PoppiesScaled.jpg?1402741174" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Samsung Galaxy K Zoom verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&#39;s probably a long time since you owned a phone as chunky as this, so it will take a bit of getting used to. However, a quick glance through Flickr or Facebook should demonstrate that people still struggle to understand what makes a good monochromatic photo. But Stuff is here to help: we&rsquo;ve put together this short guide to try and help you grasp the black and white basics.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Contrast is key </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Because black and white photos remove colour, the viewer&rsquo;s attention is focussed on other things. Sharpness, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">depth of field</a> and composition are of course important, but contrast is arguably the key factor in how much impact a black and white photograph holds.</p> <p>In most black and white images, you&rsquo;ll be looking for big contrasts between the darkest and lightest areas of the image. That&rsquo;s where the drama comes from. If your original photo doesn&rsquo;t have as much contrast as you&rsquo;d like, get it into Photoshop or another editing app and adjust the settings. Remember: a good colour photo won&rsquo;t necessarily make a good black and white one.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-what-bokeh-and-how-do-i-get-it/feature">Stuff&rsquo;s Guide to Photography: What is bokeh &ndash; and how do I get it?</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" alt="Look to bring bright whites and inky blacks into close proximity" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photo-guide-black-white-contrast.jpg?1403748800" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Polarising filters are your friend </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re shooting for black and white outside on a sunny day, attaching a circular polarising filter will help provide a more dramatic, contrasty monochromatic sky. Blur is bad, right? Not always. Just as you can make nice pictures by blurring the backgrounds with a bit of bokeh, another classic trick every snapper should know is the long exposure: by deliberately picking a slower shutter speed, you can capture smears of motion and dreamy patterns of light that make your picture tell a story. It&#39;s a piece of cake to do - just set up your camera and start mucking about.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Set up and steady </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you&rsquo;re not an expert on manual settings, fear not. Simply set your camera&rsquo;s mode dial to Shutter Priority, which will be marked &lsquo;S&rsquo; or &lsquo;Tv&rsquo;. This auto-adjusts all the settings apart from the shutter speed, freeing you up to experiment with speeds - try anything from one second to thirty seconds fro long exposures. On some phones, like the Nokia Lumia 920 and 1020, you can set the exposure to several seconds.</p> <p>Your next step is to keep the camera from moving, because if the camera moves while the shutter&rsquo;s open, your picture will be blurrier than Keith Richards&rsquo; memories of the 1970s. So, use a tripod if you&rsquo;ve got one, or a solid resting place like a table or a wall if you haven&rsquo;t. Set the shutter to self-timer, so you&rsquo;re not touching the camera when it takes the picture.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-how-take-better-photos-your-kids/feature">how to take better photos of tiny people</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/shutterpriority.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Try writing your name </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Once you&rsquo;re set up, try a basic bit of &lsquo;light painting&rsquo;: wait until dark, grab a torch and set your exposure time to anything from 10-30 seconds. Move to some traffic lights, for example, and you can get both the stationary cars and the light-streaks of them moving. You can get some dazzling results from fireworks, too - anywhere you see moving lights, get your camera steady and try a few shots, increasing the exposure time with each shot.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/lomography/stuffs-guide-photography-how-shoot-panoramas/feature">how to shoot amazing panoramas</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" alt="Stuff&#039;s Guide to Photography: how to shoot long exposures" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/fair.jpg?1404441946" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> use it in the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Long exposures aren&rsquo;t just for the night. It&rsquo;s also a great way to convey movement - crowds, moving water and more can be blurred into patterns of frenetic activity by leaving the shutter open a bit longer than usual. Beyond that, you can buy a Neutral Density filter, sometimes called an ND filter. Children have huge eyes in relation to their rest of their features and human adults have evolved to see this as cute rather than hideous and alien-esque. So you&rsquo;ll want to make sure they&rsquo;re both in focus.</p> <p>That&rsquo;s rarely a problem on a smartphone or compact camera, where the depth of field is generally such that most of your picture will be in focus. On a big-sensored camera, though, you&rsquo;ll have to be more careful with your settings.</p> <p>Choose aperture-priority mode, then set your aperture to about f5.6. You might be able to get away with a lower setting depending on how far you are from your child and what focal length you&rsquo;re shooting with. As a guide, an 18-55mm kit lens zoomed to 55mm and shot from about 5ft away at f5.6 will give you a depth of field of about 6in. Use a 50mm prime lens at f1.8 and it&rsquo;ll be about 2in.</p> <p>The best bet is to take a test shot or two, then zoom in on the eyes just to make sure they&rsquo;re both in focus, but after a while you get a feel for this kind of thing.</p> <p>Next, ramp up the ISO high enough that you still get a fast shutter speed; kids are constantly moving, so you&rsquo;ll want a shutter speed of at least 1/125, ideally more. ISO is less important - modern DSLRs can shoot at ridiculously high levels with minimal noise, and besides, a little noise is always preferable to blur or missed focus.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Both eyes are sharp" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-eyes-01.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1800" height="2400" title="The right eye is sharp but the left eye is not in focus" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-eyes-02.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 4. Traditionally, the way to deal with that is to freeze the action with a fast shutter speed. You might not have that option if you&rsquo;re using a smartphone, but turn the flash on and it&rsquo;ll have the same effect, freezing your child at the exact moment the flash goes off.</p> <p>Alternatively, you can use their movement to creative effect. Set a slow shutter speed of maybe 1/13, a high aperture of at least f8 and ideally a low ISO, then snap away as they&rsquo;re doing their thing. The key is to pan with them as they move - this should keep them sharp while the background will be blurred.</p> <p>Using a tripod or camera/lens with image stabilisation can help here, as it will ensure that any blur is caused by the movement of your children rather than your alcohol-induced shaking. It works best when your kids are moving really quickly, such as on a rollercoaster or slide and can give your pictures a real drama. Or at least disguise your alcohol-induced shaking.</p> <p>Finally, if you are looking to freeze motion, always set your camera to continuous mode if it has one. The more photos you take of them running/skipping/throwing gravel at another child, the more chance there is that one will capture that exact moment that you were after. For instance the one where they break into a broad grin as they realise that a piece of gravel is going to lodge in the other child&#39;s eye.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1800" height="2400" title="A slow shutter speed and pan can give the effect of movement" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-movement-01.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2600" height="1800" title="Freeze motion with a fast shutter speed or flash" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-movement-03.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 5. Shoot from adult height and you&rsquo;ll invariably end up with more hair than face, so you&rsquo;ll want to crouch or kneel for best results.</p> <p>Lying down can be even more dramatic, with your son or daughter presented in a perspective that most people will never have seen them in before. Alternatively, shoot them from above but in a way that makes their littleness the focus of the photo rather than just a byproduct.</p> <p>Better still, get into their environment with them and make it part of the shot. If they&rsquo;re in the middle of a big climbing frame, for instance, position yourself within it so that the bars are around the frame as well as around them - it&#39;ll help give the viewer a feeling of having been there with the child.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography/feature">Stuff&#39;s Guide to Photography</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2600" height="1800" title="Use the environment for creative effect" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-perspective-03.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1800" height="2400" title="Getting down to their level makes for a better shot" alt="Stuff&#039;s guide to photography - how to take better photos of your kids" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/photography-tips-kids-perspective-02.jpg?1404961308" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-how-take-better-photos-your-kids/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/stuffs-guide-photography-how-take-better-photos-your-kids/feature#comments Cameras Photography 101 Sun, 01 Jun 2014 11:38:27 +0000 Marc McLaren 1438183 at http://www.stuff.tv
