USB microphones are like ready meals. They seem like a good idea in the shop, but inevitably turn out to be a vague approximation of the real thing.

But there’s hope for convenience yet, even while microwave toad-in-the-hole remains inedible. Blue Microphones has unleashed its Snowball USB mic – previously available only in the States – in the UK.

The spec on this bulbous beauty features plenty of words you don’t normally hear outside a pro recording studio – ‘cardioid’ and ‘omnidirectional’ to name but two – and is as simple to set up and use as finding your USB port and applying light pressure.

Aimed at podcasters and bands hoping to add some shine to their home productions, the Snowball ships with a six-inch stand and USB cable for £89.95.

The frill-free mic needs no extra driver software or batteries, and is compatible with Mac and PC.

In advance of getting a model to test out ourselves, we had a squizz at the US Amazon reviews, and the torrent of five-star reviews speaks for itself.

Naturally, if you should buy a Snowball and land a major recording contract off the back of it, we’ll expect backstage passes for the recommendation. Break a leg.
