An animated Pacific Rim series will debut at some point before the second film hits cinemas, as well.</p> <p>Pacific Rim certainly generated a solid fanbase for its flashy robot-bashing-monster fight scenes and campy tone, and it proved a financial anomaly, generating just $101.8 million in North America&mdash;a scant figure for a tentpole action flick&mdash;but then doing three times as much internationally. There will also be something with Mickey Flanaghan in it, and Goldie will be making a programme about Matisse paintings.</p> <p>Further down the line, the BBC plans to extend the 7-day on demand service to 30 days, and to introduce more online-only offerings, such as a video channel for Radio 1. Judging by a design Twitter was recently testing, its answer is apparently &ldquo;be like Facebook&rdquo;. But we already have a Facebook. But when we already have one &lsquo;thing&rsquo;, and especially one that happens to be popular, high quality and pretty much entrenched, we usually don&rsquo;t need another &ndash; because unique approaches, individuality and differentiation vanish when everyone&rsquo;s trying to be the same; and if you&rsquo;re the company making that popular, established thing, you&rsquo;d be wise to not lose sight of that while going on a hunt for someone else&rsquo;s shiny baubles.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/mwc-2014/samsung-galaxy-s5-vs-apple-iphone-5s-weigh/feature" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s: the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Twitter and Facebook" alt="Twitter and Facebook" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/twitter-pecking-facebook.jpg?1393466613" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Nokia Lumia 1520" alt="Nokia Lumia 1520" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nokia-lumia-1520.jpg?1393466613" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/samsung-and-apple-twitter-and-microsoft-tech-companies-should-just-be-themselves/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/samsung-and-apple-twitter-and-microsoft-tech-companies-should-just-be-themselves/feature#comments Apple BBC Facebook Samsung Twitter Wed, 26 Feb 2014 13:23:10 +0000 Stephen Graves 1432932 at http://www.stuff.tv Five new BBC HD channels are launching on 10 December http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/five-new-bbc-hd-channels-launching-10-december/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD are coming in time for Christmas - free TV just got a whole lot better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="BBC HD channels" alt="BBC HD channels" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/bbc-hd-channels.jpg?1386590012" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The BBC is massively extending its range of HD channels, adding five new HD simulcast channels to its line-up on 10 December.</p> <p>BBC Three HD, BBC Four HD, BBC News HD, CBeebies HD and CBBC HD will join the existing BBC One HD and BBC Two HD on Freeview HD, Freesat HD, YouView, Sky HD and Virgin Media.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/five-new-bbc-hd-channels-launching-10-december/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/five-new-bbc-hd-channels-launching-10-december/news#comments BBC TVs Mon, 09 Dec 2013 10:49:29 +0000 Stephen Graves 1429913 at http://www.stuff.tv Google Doodle game marks Doctor Who's 50th anniversary http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/google-doodle-game-marks-doctor-whos-50th-anniversary/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Whoodle Doodle? "I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words ‘Doctor Who’. It lets you access tracks and lists of music that are being played on BBC Radio and export them to services like Spotify – completing the new-age music Circle of Life from first listen/recommendation to constant streaming and sharing.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Spotify, YouTube and Deezer </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Everyone loves a perfectly crafted playlist – but the BBC isn't suggesting you spitshine yours, mummify and worship it for centuries to come. Instead, the idea is for you to export it – to Spotify, YouTube or Deezer – so you can actually listen again. Have a go now, it works perfectly.</p> <p>But there are a few early hiccups and limits – due to technical problems you can't export to Spotify from the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/playlister">Playlister site</a> in a mobile browser yet, though desktop is fine and Deezer and YouTube don't seem to have had the same issues.</p> <p>There are also limits to the number of tracks that can be exported in one go. For Spotify, it's your most recent 85 tracks; for YouTube it's around 200 – but there's a handy notification. And right now, you can only delete one track at a time but we're told block deleting is on its way too.</p> <p>Plus, of course, since many of the DJs' life work is about discovering new music, their chosen tunes may not appear in your streaming service's library of tracks. Again, a notification pops up with how many tracks it offers – we'd guess YouTube will have the most available but the two streaming services offer better quality and – if you pay – no ads.</p> <p>We'd hope that the likes of Spotify will begin using curators like BBC Radio DJs to source new artists and get them onto the streaming service. But in our first day of using Playlister, we haven't been too disappointed with the number of tracks we can get hold of.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="BBC playlister app Spotify desktop Trevor Nelson " alt="BBC playlister app Spotify desktop Trevor Nelson " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/bbc-playlister-spotify-app-2.png?1381509348" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="BBC Playlister desktop app playlist export " alt="BBC Playlister desktop app playlist export " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/BBC-playlister-app-desktop-playlist-3.png?1381509348" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> BBC Playlister app in Spotify </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If you're a desktop Spotify user, head straight to App Finder and download the free BBC Playlister app which complements the service offered on the BBC's own site. To date, the only successful attempts have been in the form of audio dramas – hopefully Microsoft will manage to get the show back on the small screen.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/034b04e2-04fa-11e3-9e71-00144feab7de.html#axzz2c2Mqss1U">Financial Times</a> via <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23712001">BBC</a>]</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pnautWFuEnQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/70s-bbc-sci-fi-series-blakes-7-be-revived-xbox-live/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/70s-bbc-sci-fi-series-blakes-7-be-revived-xbox-live/news#comments BBC Microsoft Xbox LIVE Thu, 15 Aug 2013 15:08:46 +0000 Stephen Graves 1425582 at http://www.stuff.tv
