Automatic locking with your phone as the key? Indeed. GPS tracking for when it&rsquo;s lost or stolen? Sure. How about the ability for the suitcase to weigh itself with a tug of the handle? Incredibly, yes.</p> <p>And the Bluesmart even has a hefty built-in battery that is advertised to recharge phones, tablets, and more up to six times over before it needs to be plugged back in. The makers claim that the suitcase will be compliant with all travel regulations, which is the one red flag we had coming into the campaign.</p> <p>A US$235 (&pound;145) investment now can get you one Bluesmart for yourself come next August, says the Indiegogo page, and the campaign has already caught fire, raising more than US$135,000 (about &pound;83,000) so far on a goal of just US$50,000 (about &pound;31,000) - and that&rsquo;s in just the first day. Because it was bulky, expensive and - crucially - reusable, those tapes were routinely wiped. Programmes had limited resale value back then - there was no home video market, so overseas sales were the only opportunity to extend the life of a programme.</p> <p>Since overseas broadcasters didn't usually have the facilities to screen programmes on video tape, the BBC made telerecordings; an engineer would point a film camera at a screen playing the programme, then ship the film to broadcasters around the world.</p> <p>Those films, then, are the only record of many programmes from the 1960s - but the BBC ordered them destroyed after use.</p> <p>By the late 1970s, when the BBC stopped junking its archives, vast tracts of TV history - Dad's Army, Not Only… But Also and, of course, Doctor Who - were lost forever. "I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words ‘Doctor Who’. When I read the story code I realised I’d found something pretty special."&nbsp; The film cans, it turns out, had originally been sold to Hong Kong before being shipped on to Nigeria – and they've now been safely returned to the BBC, restored and prepared for release on-demand and on DVD.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Doctor Who: The Web of Fear" alt="Doctor Who: The Web of Fear" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dr-who-05.jpg?1382088811" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Doctor Who: The Enemy of the World" alt="Doctor Who: The Enemy of the World" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dr-who-06.jpg?1382088811" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Where to watch </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fortunately, nowadays we can simply download archive programmes to watch whenever we want, thanks to the likes of the newly-announced <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/bbc-take-itunes-new-bbc-store/news">BBC Store</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bfi-player-set-bring-british-film-your-browser/news">BFI Player</a>. Now, thanks to this replica from The Wand Company, it can control your TV – just in time for the <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006q2x0">first episode</a> of the new series on Saturday.</p> <p>The sonic screwdriver remote is an impressively accurate rendition of Doctor Who's space-age gadget. It's based on the one carried by Matt Smith in the TV series, a chunky metal cylinder with copper detailing and a plastic grip (filling in for ceramic on the actual prop).</p> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-legacy-url"> <div class="field-label">Legacy URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> /news/tv-and-hi-fi/hands-on/doctor-who-sonic-screwdriver-universal-remote-control-hands-on </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/doctor-who-sonic-screwdriver-universal-remote-control-hands/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/bbc/doctor-who-sonic-screwdriver-universal-remote-control-hands/news#comments BBC Doctor Who Fri, 31 Aug 2012 15:02:28 +0000 Stephen Graves 422556 at http://www.stuff.tv
