I was particularly thankful for the latter feature as the heavens opened along the second long straight.</p> <p>Knowing a rain shower was probably on the way, Audi&rsquo;s engineers had dialled the robo-RS7 back just a little bit before we set off on the lap, but he was still driving seriously fast. Terrifyingly fast, in fact - braking like he&rsquo;d been dared to leave it as late as possible, swinging into corners with no regard for the lunch I&rsquo;d just eaten and accelerating as if he&rsquo;d been jabbed in the backside with a hot poker.</p> <p>The lap was completely automated - the engineer sitting in the driver&rsquo;s seat was holding a kill switch in case anything went wrong, but otherwise touched neither the steering wheel nor pedals - but there was nothing robotic about it. I felt like I&rsquo;d been driven by a human racing driver. A fast one that was working pretty darn hard to scare the tapas out of me. And no, Bobby isn&rsquo;t the ultimate toy for the petrolhead lottery winner without real friends to race against. He&rsquo;s actually a showcase of technology that Audi is planning on injecting into its &lsquo;normal&rsquo; cars in the near future.</p> <p>Perhaps surprisingly, Audi has no intention to do a Google and create completely autonomous vehicles. Instead, the company&#39;s talking up the importance of driving pleasure, which would be hard to find in a car that you don&rsquo;t, you know, drive.</p> <p>The plan is to use self-driving tech to take on the more mundane bits of driving - starting with traffic jams and parking. The company sees a point in the very near future when if you find yourself all snarled up on the M1 you can switch on your car&rsquo;s robo-brain and have it handle the shuffle forward while you deal with emails or browse the internet.</p> <p>The parking thing is even fancier: imagine pulling up at the entrance to a multi-storey and hopping out so that your car can tackle the dreary loop to the top to find a space. It could even then meet you at the exit once you&rsquo;ve done your shopping. Audi says these magical car parks are already in the development stage, albeit in the Middle East for now.</p> <p>How long it takes for this brand of automotive ingenuity to hit Britain&rsquo;s potholed roads depends on boring things such as regulations being agreed, but Audi is right now taking advantage of the slightly more relaxed rules in the US to prove the technology and convince our more cautious government that automated motoring is reliable and safe.</p> <p>And Audi&rsquo;s not going it alone - the likes of&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/volvo/new-volvo-xc90-say-hello-safest-suv-ever/feature" target="_blank">Volvo</a>,&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ford/new-ford-mondeo-s-pedestrian-detection-tech-may-help-avoid-accidents/news" target="_blank">Ford</a>&nbsp;and many others are pushing the same envelope. With a bit of cooperation we could see the likes of automated traffic jam driving in the next couple of years. Bobby certainly proves the actual technology is already well on the way.</p> <p>And we now know (if it wasn&rsquo;t already abundantly clear) that humanity&rsquo;s going to need a better champion than me when the machines rise.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bmw/bmw-s-new-car-parks-itself-when-you-speak-smartwatch/news" target="_blank">BMW&#39;s new car parks itself when you speak into a smartwatch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="3507" height="2480" title="The plan is to use self-driving tech to take on the more mundane bits of driving - starting with traffic jams and parking" alt="Self-driving Audi RS7" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/RS7c140008.jpg?1419069781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Ghost in the machine? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Speaking of the machines rising, one rather spooky little tidbit did come out in a conversation with Thomas Muller, Audi&rsquo;s Head of Development Braking, Steering and Driver Assistance Systems.</p> <p>He told me that Bobby and his brother Ajay - despite being identical cars with identical hardware, software and mapping - have different personalities. It&#39;s what&#39;s inside that&#39;s most interesting, though; the car is a clear statement of intent for Audi&#39;s next generation of its Virtual Cockpit technology.</p> <p>Swing open the large but lightweight doors and you&#39;re greeted to a vast and airy cabin that features some stunning &#39;floating&#39; seats, all decked out in suitably pristine white leather.</p> <p>The driver&#39;s immediate area is beyond space age, with four OLED displays offering up a multitude of information. The main binnacle uses innovative mirror technology to give added depth of field to typically mundane information. Sat nav instructions, for example, seem to disappear into the instrument panel.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/g01oJNyAk_Q" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If that wasn&#39;t enough to send the driver into a starry-eyed trance, there&#39;s also a driver-oriented display to the left of the steering wheel, which is used to control functions for lighting and assistance systems, and a unit to the right that operates the infotainment system.</p> <p>One of the main bugbears with the Virtual Cockpit system found in the latest <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/audi/new-audi-tt-has-all-angles-covered/news" target="_blank">Audi TT</a> is that it&#39;s so driver-focused, the front passenger doesn&#39;t have anything to gawp at on long journeys. Not so in the Prologue concept, as the entire dashboard is fashioned from another OLED display, meaning occupants can enjoy messing with the sat nav system or selecting music from a number of online streaming services.</p> <p>Capping off the eye-popping display offensive is a fourth and final flexible touch screen that is used for climate control and hand written infotainment inputs. When the 4.0-litre TFSI engine is fired up &ndash;&nbsp;it develops a staggering 587bhp, by the way &ndash;&nbsp;the small bendable display stands up from its housing and slides towards the driver.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1193" height="898" title="Touch screens galore! The slick visuals and crescendoing engine roar give a sense of of the TTS&#39;s brutal speed at odds with the unhurried delivery of Löffler, who explains how Usain Bolt&rsquo;s taut legs inspired the TTS&rsquo;s design as he hammers it around the track. Looking around at him from the passenger seat, it&#39;s impressive how good he is at delivering a script at a hundred miles per hour.&nbsp; <p>The footage was filmed on five GoPros mounted on a custom frame wedged in the passenger seat (pointing forward, up, down and to both sides). The five feeds were resolved into a 60fps, 3000x1500 video stream that allows you to look every which way but backwards (look down, and you have no legs).</p> <p>There are limitations, of course. The video isn&#39;t 3D - for obvious reasons, you can&#39;t lean forward to get closer to the car&#39;s controls - and the lack of G forces as you accelerate and corner takes some&nbsp;of the drama out of the drive. But short of putting you in a simulator, or of actually being driven in the car, this is the closest you&rsquo;re going to get.</p> <p>Other Audi VR videos to watch include a look at the design sketches of the TTS, a 360-degree walk-around of the TT Coupe (the model you can drive away this month), and a comparison between the TT Roadster and the TTS (both coming next year). The drive is definitely the main event.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4 review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Will Findlater, looking sharp in a Samsung Gear VR" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-6.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The VR filming rig" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Jurgen Loffler, ready to proselytise" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-tt-pro-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> You’re going to want a Gear VR </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Gear VR itself performs incredibly well. The video didn&rsquo;t stutter in playback even when I moved my head quickly, and the phone&rsquo;s nine-axis sensor did an impressive job of picking up my orientation as I looked around the dashboard and the track ahead. <p>Coincidentally, earlier that very same day I&rsquo;d tried a headset from VRTX One that operates in the same way as the Gear VR, except with an LG G3 in place of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Viewed through lenses that fill your entire field of vision, it&rsquo;s clear that the G3 has the better screen for close-ups &ndash; the Note 4&rsquo;s pentile OLED looks comparatively pixellated &ndash; but isn&rsquo;t so good at the movement sensing, which is noticeably jerkier.</p> <p>The VRTX One headset I tried was still at prototype stage, though, and the G3 inside was running different footage (in case you&rsquo;re wondering, an amazing-looking augmented reality fantasy RPG that only appears when you&rsquo;re gazing at a particular QR code, some footage from the side of a Linkin Park gig and some NFL training), and may perform better with further optimised software.</p> <p>The Gear VR&rsquo;s ergonomics and controls are also impressive: a wheel between the lenses smoothly adjusts focus, while a responsive touch panel on the right-hand side of the headset navigates menus, and a back button on the left returns you to your previous screen. (The GameFace has no visible controls.) It&#39;s a really comfy thing to wear, though judging from the pictures, not something to try in public.</p> <p>It&#39;ll be interesting to see how the Gear VR copes with 3D games run off the Galaxy Note 4. If the experience is as smooth as it is with the TTS drive video, the Gear/Note combo will be hugely compelling.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/first-consumer-vr-headset-mobile-phones-built-lg-g3/news">The first VR headset for mobile phones is built for the LG G3</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, side view" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-1.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at the business end" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-2.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="The Gear VR, at a wonky angle" alt="I was driven in an Audi TTS… inside a Samsung Gear VR" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-gear-vr-7.jpg?1416220956" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sold? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I&rsquo;d still recommend anyone in the market for a TT actually drive the car &ndash; after all, that&rsquo;s part of the fun &ndash; but if your dealership is in an area as manic as Piccadilly, I can understand taking the VR drive option. There&rsquo;s also a &ldquo;charge&rdquo; setting that replenishes the batteries via the engine.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1202" height="900" title="Audi A3 e-tron Sportback" alt="Audi A3 e-tron Sportback" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-e-tron-03.jpg?1405333667" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1202" height="900" title="Audi A3 e-tron Sportback" alt="Audi A3 e-tron Sportback" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/audi-e-tron-05.jpg?1405333667" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Deliberately drab </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Previous all-electric offerings and more recent &lsquo;range-extenders&rsquo;, such as the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/bmw/bmw-i3/review" target="_blank">BMW i3</a>, have purposefully pushed the boundaries of futuristic car design. This is great for making a statement but not so good for tempting the masses away from their fossil fuel burning run-arounds.</p> <p>Audi has ensured its A3 e-tron looks like an, erm, A3, with only a few exterior flourishes marking it out from its comparatively prehistoric brethren. Clues to the e-tron&rsquo;s game-changing intentions mainly reside inside, where a new instrument cluster displays charge, efficiency and boost rather than a typical rev counter and a small digital display highlights battery juice levels and the combined range of the petrol engine and battery cells.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a smartphone app that allows owners to remotely heat or cool the car, check on battery levels, locate a parked car and ponder fuel efficiency figures of previous journeys. All A3s with the connection available will come with a six-month free trial of the tech, however, and an accompanying app will ensure it plays nice with your smartphone &ndash; ensuring you don&rsquo;t have to fiddle with your phone while you&rsquo;re behind the wheel.</p> <p><strong>[Source: <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/14/03/10/offerings.available.at.first.for.2015.a3.will.be.added.to.other.vehicles/">Electronista</a>]</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sony’s new Blu-ray can store up to 1TB of data </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Sony and Panasonic have announced the Archival Disc, a next-generation version of Blu-ray that can store 20 times the amount of data: 1TB to a standard Blu-ray&rsquo;s 50GB.</p> <p>The format, which is designed for professional rather than consumer use, will launch in the summer of 2015. The project was first unveiled in 2010, when it drove out of the fabled X Lab in a state far more mature and road-worthy than many could believe.</p> <p>Just three years earlier, six teams from around the world built self-driving cars that could complete the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA_Grand_Challenge" target="_blank">DARPA Grand Challenge</a>, but the fastest could only average 14mph. It was fun, but not exactly practical for fetching the shopping. The Google car, with its road-worthy intelligence, was seemingly generations ahead of everyone else.</p> <p>And thanks to Google&#39;s ingenuity and clout, the idea has caught on fast. Most motor manufacturers are investigating the tech, and city planners from San Francisco to Soweto talk about them with enthusiasm.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1165" height="874" title="Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars" alt="Why you should be pumped about self-driving cars" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-car-2.jpg?1387766455" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> I bet they&#039;re expensive, though? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Google typically uses Toyota Priuses (of course) with a US$150,000 custom rig of cameras and laser beam radar systems on top that provide the on-board computer with a real-time 360 degree view of everything that&#39;s going on around it.</p> <p>However, commercial self-driving cars shouldn&#39;t command quite such a premium. So tell us again about those wonderful human reaction times and how awesome your driving is.</p> <p>The reason tech firms from Motorola to Microsoft and transport planners are excited about autonomous cars is because taking driving out of human hands could be one of the most effective ways of saving lives since smallpox was eradicated.</p> <p>Google&#39;s cars have already proved themselves safer than human drivers, with just two minor accidents on record. One was the fault of the human driver, who had taken temporary control, the other was a rear-end shunt while the robot car was stationary.</p> <p>By continually drawing 3D maps taken from lots of sensors and comparing them against each other in real-time, the promise of robot cars are vehicles that are so aware of their surroundings it&#39;s almost impossible to crash into them. The theory is that autonomous cars are vehicles that are better at keeping following distances, don&#39;t shoot red lights and can brake harder, faster and more safely when they detect danger around them.</p> <p>Oh, and without human interference there&#39;d be no chancing it with split second red lights or undertaking to worry about. And since there&#39;d be bunching up on motorways and creating pointless traffic bottlenecks, or heavy feet to stamp on the accelerator, traffic would move faster, more efficiently and use less fuel too. Keeping traffic flowing safely and smoothly would also negate the effect that gridlock and traffic jams have on local economies too. Although not full HD, everything looks crisp, colours look correct and we never once struggled to see what was going on, even in relatively bright conditions. Sadly, the sun was behind clouds, so we can’t speak to how well it’ll perform in direct sunlight.</p> <p>It's worth noting the standard 5.8in QVGA display is of a lower resolution and lacks the 3D mapping capability of its larger cousin. In the centre of the car is a wheel with a button on top. Beside that is a button that says menu. No prizes for guessing what this does.</p> <p>Once pressed, a series of icons laid out in a 3D circle (each clearly named) present themselves; you twist the aforementioned wheel to move between them. It's a simple system that lets you jump between one function and another without any thinking, which is reassuring when your eyes need to be on the road ahead.</p> <p>Next to the menu button is a back button that takes you back out of each function. So easy a monkey could do it.</p> <p>At first, we did try to press the display as if it was a touchscreen and wondered why Audi had stuck with buttons. However, after using the wheel system all day, it becomes apparent that it’s a safer option; memorising the layout is easier than mashing at the screen with your finger.</p> <p>More complex tasks are handled by pressing two buttons that correspond with what is seen on the right and left of the display. Well, it has navigation based on Inrix data, so getting from A to B should be a painless process. The benefit of Inrix is that Audi Connect can tell you where the nearest petrol station is and, better still, the price of the fuel. Handily, our petrol A3 Saloon only gave us petrol prices, so no confusion there.</p> <p>To make life very easy, it only takes an extra press to then navigate to the nearest petrol station – or one with a price per litre you deem acceptable. The navigation will open up and guide you turn by turn to fill up on liquid gold, sparing you those frightening moments when you think you are coasting on fumes.</p> <p>This same system is applied to all other features. You can look for local events and then see when the event is going on before choosing to navigate to it. There's also flight information, train times, weather forecasts and parking information, with details on exactly how much you will be ripped off, sorry, pay.</p> <p>Just in case you're worried Audi is asking you to read lots of text, a robotic-sounding woman will read out a news story, event details or whatever else you have on screen, so you can concentrate on driving. This voice works out useful and comical in equal measure because some words and names sound utterly ridiculous when pronounced by her dulcet tones.</p> <p>Yes, we mentioned news. A spokesperson for Audi tells us that you can customise your news sources using the myAudi website – so in theory you could have the latest Stuff.tv musings read out to you as you commute to and from work. Failing that, there are a number of preset sources to keep you informed about global goings-on.</p> <p>Last but not least is the Picture Destination function. This allows you to navigate using Google Maps through a StreetView-esque interface – certain buildings appear in 3D, so it's easier to identify where you are.</p> <p>Cleverly, if you set your home as an address, Audi Connect will only use a picture of your home street, not your actual house (unless you live at the end of a cul-de-sac, in which case, that's unlucky). This is in case your car is stolen and the thief tries to work out where you live. In this scenario, you can also disable the Twitter and Facebook access using the myAudi website, so no worries about them posting “lol I just got my car nicked” on your Twitter feed.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Audi Connect" alt="Audi Connect" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Audi-Connect-6.jpg?1380160537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Audi Connect" alt="Audi Connect" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Audi-Connect-8.jpg?1380160537" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sociable driver </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Because you need to register for a myAudi account and provide the VIN number for your vehicle to use Facebook and Twitter services, we can only guess how well it works.
