A problem Asus is solving with the Zenfone Zoom.</p> <p>Besides stating the obvious, the Android-powered device has zooming capability, magnifying shots up to 3x. In laptop mode it&#39;s 16.5mm thick, which makes it about the same as a MacBook Air (and it&#39;s just 7.6mm thick without the dock). Of course it&#39;s also touch-sensitive, and its resolution wipes the floor with that of Apple&#39;s finest tiny-puter. Claimed battery life is eight hours on a charge, and there&#39;s a 2MP camera for video calls.</p> <p class="p2">The Core M is supposedly good for &#39;everyday computing&#39;, so unlike a Surface or a Macbook, you won&#39;t be playing 2015&#39;s games on the T300 Chi. Certainly, they&#39;re not as versatile as devices such as Microsoft&#39;s Award-winning Surface Pro 3, although given the top-spec T300 Chi clocks in at just US$800, it&#39;s not surprising. It does very well when it comes to framing subjects within the rules of third, while the flash sits right below the camera sensor.</p> <p dir="ltr">Which, by the way, promises better skin tones. The Real Tone LED flash, as it&rsquo;s called, throws two colour tones out, thus ensuring the right white balance for skin colours. Again, sounds awfully similar, and we&rsquo;ll let you figure this one out (which is relatively easy).</p> <p dir="ltr">The Zenfone 2, however, does have a unique feature worth bragging - its PixelMaster imaging technology. More specifically, the low-light imaging is touted to be miles ahead of its competition. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding when we saw a side-by-side demo of the Zenfone 2 with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus. The non-Asus devices, running on HDR mode, doesn&rsquo;t seem to handle low-light shots as clearly as the Zenfone 2.</p> <p dir="ltr">But that&rsquo;s one aspect that we&rsquo;ve only seen. The results might be different from what we see in a controlled environment, but till then, Asus takes the win here.</p> <p>That, and a front 5MP camera for that dreaded selfie. From the images we&rsquo;ve seen on the Zenfone 2, they are crisp, sharp and have enough colours to make your eyes glued to the screen. Asus&rsquo; ZenUI has gone through several iterations, each cleaner, simpler and much more intuitive. The latest update to its ZenUI delivers even more customisation options, including unique launchers and themes that&rsquo;ll switch out the whole UI for another that catches your fancy.</p> <p>Another trick up its sleeve - creating gestures to access apps. The resemblance, again, is uncanny to what others have been doing. Yet, it&rsquo;s also a nod that the feature&rsquo;s actually useful - after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So close, you&rsquo;re seeing the latter powering the Taiwanese company&rsquo;s device. And the signs are there - 64-bit processors will be the norm within the year, as evident with the Intel Atom quad-core processor powering the Zenfone 2.</p> <p dir="ltr">There&rsquo;s no shortage of memory too, with two variants to choose from. If you&rsquo;re on a tighter budget, the version with 2GB of RAM is sufficient to keep your multitasking habits fully satisfied. Go for broke, and you&rsquo;ll get the world&rsquo;s first smartphone with 4GB of RAM, made possible by a 64-bit processor.</p> <p dir="ltr">We&rsquo;ve had a short go at the demo devices, and if these early units are an indication of what&rsquo;s to come, we&rsquo;re impressed. Smooth as butter, the ZenUI showed no discernible lag when we swiped across different pages in the app drawer. We launched a few apps, and the loading time was almost instantaneous.</p> <p>That said, this will be looked at closely when we subject the review unit to a battery test. Speaking of battery, the 3000mAh battery powering the Zenfone 2 should provide up a full day&rsquo;s worth of use. When tablet and phone are joined and docked onto the keyboard, you only need to focus on one screen, instead of having to face up to the fact that you&#39;re obviously working as you constantly sneak peeks at your phone.</p> <p>Even when the phone&#39;s screen is minimised and you&#39;re checking your emails in laptop mode, if you receive a message a notification will pop up and you can reply directly from the mode you&#39;re in. Same goes for calls - slip the phone out and take your call somewhere a little more private or use the speakers on the tablet to answer your call directly in laptop mode.&nbsp;</p> <p>Another massive advantage as far as we can tell is the copious amounts of storage you get with this device. The smartphone contains up to 64GB storage, with a microSD slot to boost that by up to another 64GB. As for the tablet, it packs 128GB of storage, with the option of another 64GB via microSD, while the keyboard holds up to 1TB of memory, with a USB 3.0 and 2.0 slot to plug in your external hard drives. You don&#39;t even have to do the maths to know that you could store a decade&#39;s worth of movies in this massive-brained device.&nbsp;</p> <p>As for charging, it&#39;s also a 3-in-1 experience. Just plug the charging cable into the tablet and all the devices drink their fill at the same time. The laptop has a detachable 12.5in screen that becomes a separate tablet and a 5in smartphone that docks into the tablet.&nbsp;Asus claims that as a phone, it makes it the world&#39;s first 5in LTE smartphone powered by an Intel Atom quad-core processor.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s no word yet on local availability and pricing, but we&rsquo;ll update the page as soon as we get our hands and more details on it.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-transformer-book-t100/review">Asus Transformer Book T100 review</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus Transformer Book V" alt="Asus Transformer Book V" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/asus-transformer-book-v.jpg?1401898011" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Asus Transformer Book V unveiled </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/asus/computex-2014/asus-new-transformer-book-v-and-zenbook-nx500-unveiled/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Asus Computex 2014 Laptops Smartphones Tablets Tue, 03 Jun 2014 09:39:32 +0000 Stephen Graves 1438451 at http://www.stuff.tv Asus shows off haul of fresh Android tablets http://www.stuff.tv/asus/asus-shows-haul-fresh-android-tablets/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> All models, including a brace of new Fonepads, are 64-bit and equipped with Android 4.4 KitKat </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Asus shows off haul of fresh Android tablets" alt="Asus shows off haul of fresh Android tablets" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/asus-fonepad-7.jpg?1401754896" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Well, Asus has been busy.
