The first trailer for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag has landed, and armed with info from its launch event in London last week, we can safely say that it looks like the best in the series yet. Here's all you need to know ahead of its launch later this year.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag – overview
Assassin's Creed 4 puts you into the boots of Edward Kenway – a deadly assassin-trained pirate captain whose roguish charm is equally matched by the ferocity of his blades. Fans of Assassin's Creed 3 will recognise the Kenway name – Edward is AC3 protagonist Connor's grandfather – but there'll be other big names in there too, including the infamous Blackbeard and Calico Jack.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag – setting
Starting you off in 1715, Assassin's Creed 4 takes place in the diverse West Indies (the Caribbean). It's by far the largest and most diverse Assassin's Creed world ever made with a wide range of different environments.
We're not talking about just rooftops and forests here either. This time around you've got underwater shipwrecks, packed cities and even wild untamed jungles to contend with, as well as hidden coves offering plenty of reward for those willing to seek it.
Featuring 50 unique locations including the British-run Kingston and the pirate haven Nassau, you'll be stabbing sharks in the deep one minute and necking rum with buxom vixens the next.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag – gameplay
You shouldn't have much trouble navigating Assassin's Creed 4's vast open world of islands and seas, as you'll be in charge of your very own ship, the Jackdaw. Coupled with your crew members (which you must recruit and replace as they inevitably die), you'll be seamlessly jumping from sea to beach as you traverse the Carribbean waters.
You'll also be able to upgrade your ship, which is something you'll definitely want to do given the power of the Armadas charged with bringing the pirates of the Caribbean to heel. Whether you prefer boarding ships to take them over or blasting them with cannon fire, there'll definitely be no shortage of action in AC4.
Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag – release date
Assassin's Creed 4 will be hitting the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U on November 1st, with a PC release due after. It will also land on the PlayStation 4 and (presumably) the next Xbox, whenever that may be.
