The same slim-but-not-too-slim 7.5mm aluminium build, small-but-not-too-small 7.9in screen and incredibly sharp 2048 x 1536 resolution. There&rsquo;s no noticeable tweaks to the iPad Mini&rsquo;s screen tech. Whites are still printer paper-pure, contrast is excellent and colours are mostly accurate and appealing. We say mostly because there are still a few hues, reds in particular, that both the iPad Air and even tablets like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/kindle-fire-hdx/review">Kindle Fire HDX</a> pick up that the iPad Mini misses. Still, it&rsquo;s not something every user will spot and colour reproduction is more than good enough for Netflix and the web. If you need a tablet for working with images, we&rsquo;d recommend the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review">iPad Air 2 </a>instead.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPad Mini 3 isnt treated to the same anti-reflective coating and display lamination technique seen on the Air 2 either&nbsp;- a small difference but one that makes the gap between the two iPad models bigger. In terms of aesthetics, both the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 get a new gold model to join the silver and space gray options.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">Apple iPad Mini 2 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> <p>Power and performance remains the same too, that is very, very good. This tablet is as smooth as we&rsquo;ve seen from Apple, with no stutters or lag. Still, spec fans will be disappointed that the iPad Mini 3 misses out on the A8X processor and M8 motion co-processor, the brains behind the iPad Air 2. In time, we might see more games and video editing apps that make use of this extra grunt. For now, we&rsquo;re not complaining too much.&nbsp;</p> <p>For stamina, at least, the iPad Mini 3 just about matches the bigger Cupertino tablet. Like its predecessor, it lasts just shy of the iPad Air&rsquo;s ten-hour battery life. For a tablet, that&rsquo;s very respectable and&nbsp;means only having to charge the iPad Mini every other day at most.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="iPad on iPad. Well that&#39;s no longer a problem, as the Mini 3&#39;s joined the fingerprint-recognition party. It&rsquo;s faster and more accurate than when it was first introduced and still just as easy to set up.&nbsp;</p> <p>So what can you do with it? First up, replace your pin code to unlock the iPad, a feature Samsung has added to smartphones such as the Galaxy S5, albeit in a slightly less elegant implementation. Then there&rsquo;s fingerprint authentication for iTunes and App Store purchases, which is a nice timesaver that lets you wave bye-bye to entering your password every time.</p> <p>Apple Pay, only available in the US for now, adds support for lots more online transactions&nbsp;- including booking Uber cabs. It&rsquo;s worth noting that, unlike the iPhone 6, you wont be paying via NFC in shops with your Mini 3. To be fair to Apple, pressing an iPad Mini 3 to a contactless card reader would look a bit ridiculous.&nbsp;</p> <p>As for <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-81-released-bringing-apple-pay-continuity-and-various-fixes/news">iOS 8.1</a>, you can download this on to your iPad Mini 2 now, so it&rsquo;s not much of a selling point for the new model. The additions are welcome though, both in terms of ironing out bugs in iOS 8 and adding long-hyped productivity features such as syncing files, links and messages&nbsp;with Yosemite (on MacBooks and iMacs)&nbsp;via&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/my/imac/how-answer-calls-and-messages-across-your-mac-ipad-and-iphone-continuity/feature">Continuity</a>&nbsp;when logged into iCloud.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<strong><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review"> iOS 8 review&nbsp;</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="4000" height="3000" title="Touch ID set up takes seconds " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20finger.jpg?1414169062" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Looks like iOS 7 but lots more functionality " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad%20mini%20review%20iOS.jpg?1414169062" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="4000" height="3000" title="The iPad still has the best optimised apps " alt="Apple iPad Mini 3 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-mini-3-review-apps.png?1414169062" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> If you want more than 32GB, you need an iPad Mini 3 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>That&rsquo;s right. In&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature">another business-minded move</a>, the Mini 3 skips the 32GB model altogether.</p> <p>It is available in 16GB (&pound;320), 64GB (&pound;400) and 128GB (&pound;480) sizes, with on average an extra &pound;100 for 3G/4G capabilities. What&#39;s involved? You sign up, download an app and you&#39;re in line to help test and review other apps on the App Store. Pretty simple, huh?</p> <p>Third-party developers can invite up to 1,000 people to beta test &ndash; an tenfold increase on Apple&#39;s originally-announced plan of just 100 testers.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What happens is that a developer sends out invitations, users then download the app via iTunes Connect and then download TestFlight. iOS 8 also helps notify users when the latest builds of beta apps are available, which is pretty handy compared to waiting for developer emails.</p> <p>As for updates, they&#39;re going to take a little longer due to Apple needing to vet the apps via its Beta App Review. Still, having the Big A run the rule over apps first isn&#39;t necessarily a bad thing &ndash; it reduces the likelihood of pre-release software messing up your iPhone or iPad. One of the pitfalls of Google Play is its reliance on peer review, meaning it&#39;s all too easy for malware and shady apps to sneak into the app marketplace.</p> <p>The TestFlight Beta app is <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8" target="_blank">free on the App Store</a> but it would be a good idea to get the lowdown on the program at the <a href="https://developer.apple.com/app-store/Testflight/" target="_blank">official page</a> first.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/10-great-apps-and-games-your-iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus/feature-0"><strong> 10 of the best apps for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus </strong></a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.maclife.com/article/news/apple_releases_testflight_app_beta_testing_public?utm_source=Social&amp;utm_medium=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Owned" target="_blank">Maclife</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" alt="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/testflight%2002.jpg?1414142337" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/ios-8/testflight-gets-you-new-ios-app-betas/news#comments Apple iOS iOS 8 iOS apps iPad iPhone Fri, 24 Oct 2014 09:10:20 +0000 Stephen Graves 1451254 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U gets eight-player mode, Fire Phone drives Amazon losses, and Christian Bale will play Steve Jobs http://www.stuff.tv/amazon/fully-charged-super-smash-bros-wii-u-gets-eight-player-mode-fire-phone-drives-amazon-losses-a <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Finish out the workweek strong with our morning tech news roundup </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" alt="Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/super-smash-bros-wiiu-8players.jpg?1414132381" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Super Smash Bros. adds eight-player combat </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Nintendo has taken its sweet time exposing the various features to come in December&rsquo;s anticipated <em>Super Smash Bros. for Wii U</em>, and the latest is a corker: the cartoonish fighting game will support local eight-player battles - double the series&rsquo; normal amount of combatants.</p> <p>It&rsquo;ll only happen on certain enlarged stages, and it&rsquo;s not considered the normal gameplay setting for the game, but that&rsquo;s still an inviting addition if you have enough controllers to make it happen. However, while this is often because it makes for a clickbait headline, many within the industry remember a time when Apple really was doomed.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before Steve Jobs returned to the company, Apple was haemorrhaging money. It had a bloated product line and was obsessed with doing too much by itself &mdash; proprietary <em>everything</em> &mdash;&nbsp;and yet paid little attention to the buying user experience. If you were one of the rapidly diminishing number of people who actually wanted to buy a new Mac instead of a Windows PC, you were faced with a wall of Performas and Power Macintoshes &mdash; a bafflingly complex matrix of products with so much overlap that the best way to select your next machine was probably to pin Apple&rsquo;s product chart on a wall and lob a dart at it.</p> <p>Jobs &lsquo;thought different&rsquo;. He took a knife to Apple&rsquo;s products and didn&rsquo;t so much trim the fat as hack off hunks of meat until all that remained was the simplest and most streamlined product matrix you&rsquo;d ever seen. The idea was Apple would have only one &lsquo;consumer&rsquo; and one &lsquo;professional&rsquo; product within &lsquo;desktop&rsquo; and &lsquo;notebook&rsquo; slots, which became the iMac, Power Mac, iBook and PowerBook.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Over time, Apple as a company evolved further, embracing additional key aspects of personal computing that grabbed the imagination of the consumer, but it never lost its sense of focus. As Jobs stated during a Macworld event, &ldquo;focus is about saying no,&rdquo; even if that &ldquo;pisses off people&rdquo;. Hence, Apple continued to release what it thought its consumers&nbsp;<em>needed</em>&nbsp;rather than what they thought they&nbsp;<em>wanted</em>, restricting choice and providing only the best options.</p> <p>This notion continued as Apple shifted its own focus towards appliance computing: the iPhone and the iPad. But even as Apple&rsquo;s product line diversified, its products could still all fit on a desk. Naturally, pundits rallied against this line of thinking, arguing Apple was denying consumers &lsquo;choice&rsquo;, compared to the plentiful ranges provided by rivals, but Apple was really making things easy. As numerous studies have shown, people really aren&rsquo;t great at making choices &mdash; especially when faced with a huge number of options.</p> <p>In the context of Apple and choice, the iPad is an interesting case, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">recent events</a>&nbsp;highlight how Apple is, for better or worse, now very clearly transforming into a different company from the one Steve Jobs ran. At first, the iPad was just the iPad. You chose an amount of storage, decided whether you wanted 3G, and away you went. Gradually, colour entered the mix, and then the iPad mini. But even last year, the main choice for the consumer was size: did you want the iPad Air or the iPad mini? For the most part, the machines were identical, so the main decision you had to make was relatively simple.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H8eP99neOVs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." alt="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-first-gen.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fast forward to last week&#39;s Apple event. Choice is now abundant in the new iPad line-up, but simplicity has been obliterated. Alongside the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news" target="_blank">iPad mini 3</a> sit last year&rsquo;s models, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">iPad Air</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad mini 2</a> (previously known as the iPad mini with Retina display); the original iPad mini also lurks in the line-up. So now there are three iPad minis and two iPad Airs; additionally, the Air (2) and mini (3) no longer have parity &mdash;&nbsp;they boast different chips and capabilities.</p> <p>The new iPad mini 3 is simply an iPad mini 2, but with TouchID, for an extra 80 quid. But the iPad mini 2 only comes in 16 and 32 GB flavours, whereas the iPad mini 3 comes in 16, 64 and 128 GB options (but not 32). Similarly, the Air and Air 2 clash, Apple&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature">cynical upsell decision on new kit</a>&nbsp;making the 16 GB iPad Air 2 pricier than the 32 GB iPad Air.</p> <p>All this adds up to more choice, but also more confusion for the consumer, now faced with five models, with overlapping features and capacities. And sowing the seeds of buyer&rsquo;s doubt sometimes means baffled customers simply walk out of a store with nothing at all. It also erodes a differentiator Apple had compared to the competition: the simplicity and elegance of the buying experience.</p> <p>There are of course logical&nbsp;<em>business</em>&nbsp;reasons why Apple&rsquo;s made this decision. With the holiday season coming up, Apple&rsquo;s now covering more price-points, using older technology to combat cheaper Android tablets. It has the potential for wider sales, perhaps grabbing customers who might have plumped for a Kindle Fire or a Tesco Hudl. But bet-hedging with an overly complex line-up doesn&rsquo;t show focus, and this is a slippery slope Apple&rsquo;s been down before, only this time Steve Jobs isn&rsquo;t around to say no. Someone else on Apple&rsquo;s executive team should instead.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ipad-air-vs-ipad-air-2-should-you-upgrade/news" target="_blank">iPad Air vs It seems that the new Mac Mini has a replaceable hard drive, at least, although it might void the warranty.</p> <p>[Source:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/10/17/mac-mini-soldered-ram/">Macrumors</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">6 things we learnt at today&rsquo;s Apple launch</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="486" title="Apple Mac Mini" alt="Apple Mac Mini" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-macmini-2014.png?1413847241" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-microsoft-s-rumoured-fitness-band-out-soon-fitbit-has-smartwatch-and-custom-ps4-#comments Apple Fitbit Health and fitness Mac Mini 2014 PlayStation 4 Smartwatches Wearable tech Mon, 20 Oct 2014 14:02:00 +0000 Andrew Hayward 1450840 at http://www.stuff.tv Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 vs iPad Air 2: the weigh-in http://www.stuff.tv/apple/samsung-galaxy-tab-s-105-vs-ipad-air-2-weigh/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The best of Apple vs. the best Android tablet around — will either deliver a knockout blow? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="800" height="600" title="ipad samsung" alt="ipad samsung" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/intro_1.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Even if you&#39;re a diehard Android warrior secretly (or not so secretly) wishing that Cupertino will be swallowed up by a Hellmouth, it&rsquo;s hard to argue with the notion that Apple got things right with the iPad.</p> <p>Tablets had been around for years, but Apple&rsquo;s attempt was the first to successfully marry usability, design and an app ecosystem in a device that people actually wanted to use.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design and build: metal vs plastic fantastic </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Galaxy Tab S apes the Galaxy S5, with its perforated plastic back (available in Titanium Bronze or Dazzling White, don&#39;t you know).</p> <p>In use, it can be a touch creaky, but it still feels significantly more robust than the bulk of the competition. It&rsquo;s comfortable to hold, being light (465g) and super-skinny (6.6mm). In short, it&#39;s the best looking, best-feeling tablet that Samsung has ever released, though it&#39;s still not quite at the farthest end of the premium table.</p> <p>By contrast, Apple&rsquo;s iPads have always felt absurdly solid, and the iPad Air 2 is a truly stunning piece of engineering. Thinner than its predecessor at just 6.1mm, two stacked are roughly as thick as the original iPad.</p> <p>Despite its slightly svelter nature, there&rsquo;s no sense of &lsquo;bendgate&rsquo; here, and the metal-made tablet clocks in a few grams under Samsung&rsquo;s, at 437g. If the colour saturation threatens to set your retinas alight, you can dial it down a bit too, which is handy.</p> <p>Usefully, the white balance can automatically adjust to take into account your local lighting conditions. This not only makes the tablet a touch thinner, but makes the screen more vibrant; there&rsquo;s also a new coating to reduce reflections. The aspect ratio is also better suited to a wider range of tasks, even if it&rsquo;s sub-optimal for movies (in that you get black bars).</p> <p>The whites on the iPad are a little purer, and the colours are also slightly more realistic.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Draw. New Share sheets, iCloud Drive, and TouchID all combine to make for a potentially great future for iPad users, but developers must capitalise on them first. (Apple naturally promises the bugs from iOS 8.0 have been squashed.)</p> <p>By contrast, Samsung&rsquo;s tablet runs Android 4.4.2 with TouchWiz welded to it. Samsung only offers you 16GB or 32GB, but you can shove in a micro SD card up to a massive 128GB to expand your storage. Hurrah!</p> <p>Elsewhere, both devices offer fingerprint-scanners, with the iPad Air 2 getting the TouchID system introduced with last year&rsquo;s iPhone. This might seem like a gimmick, but when the tech is adopted by enough apps, it becomes second-nature to use it for unlocking password managers and journalling apps, or to confirm purchases. It&#39;s also far better than the Tab S&#39; fingerprint scanner, which requires an actual swipe as opposed to a simple tap.</p> <p>But the storage thing (and bang per buck thereof) wins it for Samsung.</p> <p><em><strong>Winner: Samsung Galaxy Tab S</strong></em></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/features.jpg?1413793495" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: wind them up and watch them go </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&rsquo;s been typically tight-lipped regarding the specs of its new iPad, merely noting it&rsquo;s the most powerful iPad ever. Boasting a new custom A8X processor, graphs during the recent Apple event showed it blazing ahead of the iPad Air, which already performed admirably. In terms of battery life, you get up to ten hours in normal usage.</p> <p>Samsung&rsquo;s not so coy, happily banging on about its Exynos 5 Octa 5420, running at 1.9GHz. It&rsquo;s hugely powerful and backed with 3 GB of RAM. Apple&rsquo;s iPad is rumoured to have 2 GB, up from the 1 GB in previous models. Battery life is a smidge under Apple&rsquo;s, at nine hours.</p> <p>But it&rsquo;s not all about numbers, and in real-world use, new iPads with the latest iOS have always felt buttery smooth, whereas Android devices with higher specs have frequently comparatively suffered, and even Samsung&rsquo;s mighty tablet is prone to stutters and lag. The light in the demo area was poor, but the high-speed bursts of images we shot had acceptable levels of image grain and rendered colours accurately.</p> <p>Burst mode extends to selfies, too: the 2MP FaceTime camera up front can capture you striking a pose frame by frame. Navigating through iOS 8 was predictably jerk-free, and apps and web pages loaded in a snap.</p> <p>There are no apps that really test the limits of the A8X yet, which is supposedly 40% faster than the A7 in the iPad Air and has a claimed 2.5x the graphics performance, but we did see a glimpse of additional capability: with both the A7-equipped iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 running <em>Asphalt 8 </em>next to each other &ndash; and it looking pretty damn spiffy in either case &ndash; it was clear that the Air&rsquo;s rendering was marginally smoother. When there are more games that make the most of iOS 8&rsquo;s &lsquo;Metal&rsquo; graphics architecture, and the processing grunt in the Air 2, it&#39;s likely the difference will be more stark.</p> <p>Battery life is supposedly unchanged: Apple says you&rsquo;ll get at least 10 hours of browsing time out of the iPad Air 2. We&rsquo;ll test the claim when we get our hands on a review sample.</p> <p>The iPad Air 2 also has the M8X motion coprocessor, which handles processing of all movement data, and now includes a barometer to measure elevation. This takes some work away from the power-hungry A8X, theoretically upping battery life. And it can presumably tell you when you&rsquo;re on a mountain.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" alt="Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ipad-air-2-hands-on-review-04.jpg?1414057568" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Touch ID, plus no more SIM card swapping </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are few items that can do more damage to your wallet than an iPad, at least when combined with a decent online shopping website and some rubbish on TV. Soon, if a site accepts Apple Pay, you&rsquo;ll be able to part with the cash via credit cards stored in your Passbook app with the touch of a fingertip. (It&rsquo;s US-only for now, but just you wait&hellip;)</p> <p>In iOS 8, Touch ID also lets you open passworded apps &ndash; we saw it allow the demonstrator friction-free access to Evernote &ndash; and, as with iOS 7, unlocks the device itself, and lets you pay for apps, books and other items from the iTunes Store. But even with the bullsh1t detector at work, it&#39;s obvious that the Retina 5K Display is something else.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s 27in across, with a resolution of 5120 x 2880 &ndash; those 14.7million pixels yield a resolution of 219ppi, versus the 109ppi of its 1080p-equipped siblings.</p> <p>It&#39;s a bespoke-designed panel with from-the-ground up electronics, to which glass is fused directly to reduce the barrier between viewer and pixels. Though it was hard to judge properly, in the test conditions colours looked punchy no matter what angle we were viewing it from, and details in images of medieval churches and full-frame Hasselblad-grabbed street scenes were rendered amazingly crisply.&nbsp;Text in menus and documents is burr-free &ndash; pure, eggshell smooth, right up until you get to about a hand&rsquo;s breadth away.&nbsp; At a glance it&#39;s almost as if the screen&#39;s a fake, printed directly on the glass.&nbsp;</p> <p>But, yes, the image moves, and it was equally impressive with the video we saw demonstrated in Final Cut &ndash; a full 4K movie of sample footage that played smoothly and, despite being rendered pixel-for-pixel, left space for the toolbars around the screen. Indeed, for anyone after a professional photography or videography machine, those extra pixels could make for an invaluable workspace.</p> <p>In short, the man telling us this screen was rather good wasn&rsquo;t fibbing. We can&rsquo;t wait to see how it performs under lab conditions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Look at those pixels!" alt="Apple iMac with Retina 5K Display hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-imac-with-retina-5k-display-hands-on-review-04.jpg?1413894185" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Text is super-sharp" alt="Apple iMac with Retina 5K Display hands-on review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-imac-with-retina-5k-display-hands-on-review-06.jpg?1413894185" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: 5K gaming is now a thing </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The machine we tried was stock &pound;2000 specification: a 3.5GHz Core i5 processor, 8GB memory, Radeon M290X graphics and a 1TB Fusion drive (a combination SSD / hard disk).</p> <p>It tore through OS X Yosemite at speed, opening most apps without a pause. The only software that posed a challenge was <em>Tomb Raider</em>, which took a few seconds to spring to life, but even that was impressively quick. And, frankly, seeing any familiar game at this sort of resolution is special.</p> <p>The experience wasn&rsquo;t universally smooth, though. Dragging huge RAW images around on screen was a little jerky, and it was obvious that <em>Tomb Raider</em> has seen silkier renditions &ndash; there were clearly dropped frames. It&#39;s forgivable, though; that 5K resolution is nothing if not demanding, and the detail on screen at the time was hugely impressive.</p> <p>(As an aside, any apps that meet the latest Yosemite specification will support 5K resolutions &ndash; so there will be several games available to put the display through its paces.)</p> <p>It&rsquo;ll be interesting to see how the Retina 5K iMac deals with the rigours of the workplace; investing in more RAM (up to 32GB), faster storage (you can get 1TB of PCIe-based solid-state) and the upgraded processor (a 4GHz i7) and graphics (Radeon M295X, capable of delivering 3.5 teraflops) will probably mean getting more from that display.
