The report reaffirms Apple&#39;s plans to launch a a 4.7in version and a 5.5in version of the iPhone 6; Apple supplier Pegatron will produce around 30 per cent of the 4.7in model, and none of the 5.5in version. Foxconn is expected to begin supplying the 4.7in iPhone in July, with the 5.5in version following in August. For those with smaller fingers (or pocketbooks), an &quot;existing&quot; model of the 4in iPhone will continue to be produced by Wistron &ndash; likely the iPhone 5s. Interestingly, the report suggests that the 4.7in and 4in models will be the &quot;main sales force for Apple in 2014,&quot; suggesting that the 5.5in variant is aimed at a niche market. <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/iphone-6-leak-points-larger-47in-screen/news" target="_blank">iPhone 6 leak points to a larger 4.7in screen</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="Looks bigger to us" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-case-2.jpg?1406035734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="The iPhone 6 could have a screen size around 4.7 inches" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-mould-leak_0.jpg?1406035734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Update 09/06/14:&nbsp;</strong>Another reportedly genuine iPhone 6 case has leaked courtesy of French site <a href="http://www.nowhereelse.fr/iphone-6-nouvelles-photos-coque-98265/" target="_blank">nowehereelse.fr</a>. According to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-10/apple-said-developing-curved-iphone-screens-enhanced-sensors.html" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a>, Apple is working on 4.7in and 5.5in iPhone models. Whether or not these are experimental&nbsp;prototypes&nbsp;or final products remains to be seen, but at least we can generally agree that, whatever the final size, the iPhone 6 will arrive with the biggest screen yet seen on an&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;smartphone.</p> <p>Not only that, but Bloomberg&#39;s source also states that the iPhone 6 will arrive with a curved glass display which &nbsp;wraps around the edge of the device. Watch out <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g-flex/lg-g-flex/review" target="_blank">LG G Flex</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/meet-samsung-galaxy-round-note-3-curved-screen/news" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Round</a>.</p> <p><strong>Update 21/01/14</strong>: Analyst Sun Changxu <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-prepping-47in-and-57in-iphone-6-june-launch/news" target="_blank">backs up</a> Bloomberg&#39;s claims of smaller and larger iPhone 6 variants, differing only in the specifics &ndash; apparently the larger iPhone will sport a 5.7in screen.</p> <p><strong>Update 23/01/14: </strong>Another day, another analyst chipping in with more claims of a big-screen iPhone. This time it&#39;s the Cowen Group&rsquo;s Timothy Arcuri who&#39;s been consulting the entrails and the paths of migrating birds (or, you know, sources in the supply chain), concluding that the iPhone 6 is <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/22/analyst-apples-iphone-6-design-locked-down-with-48-display-80211ac-wi-fi" target="_blank">&quot;locked down&quot;</a> with a 4.8in screen.</p> <p>Oh, and finally, Apple is also reportedly tinkering away on a pressure-sensitive display which can detect how hard&nbsp;you&#39;re&nbsp;pressing it, although it&#39;s unlikely that the magical tech will be present in the next iPhone.</p> <p><strong>Update 11/07/14:</strong> Chinese media reports that the iPhone 6&#39;s screen will benefit from <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/iphone_6_screen_may_have_new_haptic_technology-news-8999.php" target="_blank">all-new, never-seen-before haptic technology</a>. The tech will allow the screen to vibrate in a wider variety of ways and even deliver different vibrations depending on where your finger touches the screen. The drawback? A pattern of reflections on the left hand side of the screen suggests that the iPhone 6 may, indeed, have a curved display &ndash; a first for Apple if it proves to be true. The system is much more secure than magnetic attachment, and if if true, the iPhone 6 will be even more of a formidable pocket camera than the iPhone 5s already is.</p> <p><strong>Update 07/05/14:&nbsp;</strong>According to Chinese analyst Sun Chang Xu, the iPhone 6&#39;s camera will increase its 1.5&micro; pixel size to 1.7&micro;. That&#39;s close to the HTC One (M8)&#39;s &nbsp;2&micro; pixel size &ndash; the much-touted &quot;Ultrapixel&quot; camera that&#39;s designed to excel at low-light shooting. Xu also claims that the iPhone 6&#39;s camera will feature electronic image stabilisation to reduce blur.</p> <p><strong>Update 25/06/14:</strong>&nbsp;The latest rumours suggest that the iPhone 6&rsquo;s camera will feature optical image&nbsp;stabilisation, which should reduce blur and improve detail in low-light shots.&nbsp;</p> <p>A &lsquo;floating lens&rsquo; design will help stabilise photos, making up for jerky hand movements. It&rsquo;ll also allow for a longer shutter speed, which will result in more&nbsp;light being captured, with less blur to boot. All previous versions of iOS have debuted with a new bit of hardware, and given that we know iOS 8 will be out in the autumn, it stands to reason that it will arrive on the iPhone 6.</p> <p>So what&#39;s new about it? Rather a lot, actually.</p> <p>For starters, iOS 8 will mark a major break with the past for Apple, in that third-party apps will have greater access to the OS&#39; inner workings. You&#39;ll now be able to install third-party widgets into the Notification Centre, add third-party keyboards such as Swype and SwiftKey.</p> <p>Apps will also be able to install extensions within other apps. So, for instance, tapping on an image within Apple&#39;s Photos apps will give you the option to apply filters from other photography apps you may have installed.</p> <p>They&#39;ll even be able to work with Touch ID, so the possibility of paying for an Ebay purchase with the tap of a finger is now very real. But, because of the way Apple will still control security, third-party apps won&#39;t themselves have access to your fingerprint or other sensitive info - so you won&#39;t need to worry about your data being stolen.</p> <p>As has long been rumoured, iOS 8 will also see the arrival of a Health app. It&#39;ll work with the new HealthKit tool for devs and will collect data from all of your third-party health and fitness apps, syncing and presenting it all in the one place.</p> <p>Even without any hardware developments, Health could prove a very useful app. Health and fitness trackers are notoriously bad at working well with each other, meaning that you usually have to go into several apps in order to view all of your data. Apple&#39;s solution could put an end to this, and big partners such as Nike are already on board.</p> <p>That said, we wouldn&#39;t be surprised to see Apple include a hardware feature or two to make the most of the new app. The iPhone 5s&#39; M7 motion co-processor is already capable of tracking and analysing movement data, but if the iPhone 6 included a heart-rate monitor such as the one on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, that would give it greater powers. Or maybe that&#39;s something that will feature on the fabled <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review">iWatch</a>...</p> <p>Gaming should be big news on the iPhone 6. As well as having a larger, more finger-friendly screen and more powerful processor, it&#39;ll also gain new skills via iOS 8. Apple&#39;s invented a new programming language, called Swift, and a developer tool called Metal, and together they should bring console-quality graphics to the iPhone.</p> <p>At WWDC, Apple showed off a demo of a game called <em>Zen Garden</em>, which looked seriously nice. The App Store is also being reworked to make it easier to find the best games (and apps in general), and we expect big releases to arrive with iOS 8 in the autumn.</p> <p>And then there&#39;s Continuity. That&#39;s Apple&#39;s name for a raft of services which link your iPhone to your iPad and your Mac, so long as it&#39;s running the new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/mac-os-x-yosemite/review">OS X Yosemite</a> (which will also debut in the autumn). Chief among them is Handoff, which will let you start a task on one device and continue it on another. For instance you could tap out half an email on your iPhone, then stroll over to your Mac and with a single click on the Mail icon, finish it off there.&nbsp;You&#39;ll also be able to pick up phone calls on your Mac using your iPhone&#39;s connection, or create a hot spot with a single click when you don&#39;t have any Wi-Fi.</p> <p>And we could go on: iCloud Drive will bring Dropbox-like document storage and syncing to iOS; Family Sharing will enable you to share iTunes and App Store purchases with up to six family members; HomeKit will let Apple control all of your home-automation gadgets; mail and messaging will get new abilities; Siri will be smarter; Photos will be synced across devices... Citing sources within the supply chain, he claims that the iPhone 6 will launch in <a href="http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/22/iphone-6-80211ac/" target="_blank">September</a>, as its predecessors have.</p> <p><strong>Update 27/03/14</strong> <a href="http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20140326PD212.html" target="_blank">Digitimes</a> reports that Apple has only just placed orders with two smartphone battery suppliers in the Far East. That suggests that the iPhone 6 is not yet in mass production, which in turn points to a release this autumn (September, most likely) rather than June.</p> <p><strong>Update 07/05/14:&nbsp;</strong>Apple supplier Pegatron has received a 15 per cent share of orders for the 4.7in iPhone 6, according to Taiwan&#39;s <a href="http://ctee.com.tw/News/Content.aspx?id=518756&amp;yyyymmdd=20140507&amp;f=0d427af3103c9091f4a9eb51c4c75dae" target="_blank">Commercial Times</a> (via <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/05/07/rumor-apple-supplier-pegatron-nets-orders-for-47-inch-iphone-6-to-ship-in-september-" target="_blank">AppleInsider</a>). Production of iPhones will rise from 35m in 2013 to 50m this year &ndash; the boost in production coming from the iPhone 6, which according to &quot;supply chain rumours,&quot; will debut in September.</p> <p><strong>Update 27/05/14:</strong> German carrier Deutsche Telekom has reportedly told its call centre representatives that the iPhone 6 will hit store shelves on Friday 19th September, according to <a href="http://www.apfelpage.de/2014/05/27/iphone-6-telekom-bereitet-sich-auf-marktstart-vor/" target="_blank">apfelpage.de</a>. <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/05/27/german-carrier-allegedly-enticing-customers-to-stay-by-claiming-sept-19-iphone-6-launch" target="_blank">AppleInsider</a> points out that the date is likely an educated guess, though it&#39;s consistent with previous iPhone launches.</p> <p><strong>Update 04/06/14:</strong>&nbsp;Apple has announced that iOS 8 will be available &quot;this fall&quot;. That&#39;s American-speak for this autumn. So September is still looking likely.</p> <p><strong>Update 22/07/14: </strong>Apple is reportedly looking to avoid any chance of iPhone 6 shortages by ensuring some 70 to 80 million units are ready to be sold this year alone. According to the <a href="http://stream.wsj.com/story/apples-new-iphone/SS-2-49206/SS-2-585440/" target="_blank">Wall Street Journal</a>, the company has requested its China-based suppliers deliver this amount &ndash; easily the largest initial production run of an iPhone model &ndash; by the end of December. To give you some perspective of how many units this represents, there were 50 to 60 million iPhone 5s and 5c units manufactured in 2013.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/smartphones/top-ten">These are the 10 best smartphones in the world right now</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="600" height="449" alt="" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone6-5.5-1_1.jpg?1406035734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-18"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Caught on camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="498" src="http://player.youku.com/embed/XNzM1MTc4NTg0" width="510"></iframe></p> <p><strong>Update 04/07/14:&nbsp;</strong>An reportedly genuine 4.7in iPhone 6 front panel has been shown off on video by Chinese site <a href="http://www.ifanr.com/430261" target="_blank">iFanr</a>.</p> <p>The front panel is substantially larger than the comparison iPhone 5s&#39; front panel, and we get a real sense of just how larger the iPhone 6 willl be once we see the 4.7in panel placed over it.</p> <p>If rumours of a 5.5in iPhone 6 also prove to be true, then smaller-handed gadgeteers could be in for a struggle.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 0 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Preview </div> </div> </div> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review#comments Apple iOS 8 iPhone 6 Smartphones Tue, 22 Jul 2014 13:28:10 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1428771 at http://www.stuff.tv iPhone 6 screen subjected to sandpaper torture, fares better than the iPhone 5s http://www.stuff.tv/apple/47in-iphone-6-screen-subjected-sandpaper-fares-better-iphone-5s/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Can&#039;t stand scratches on your screen? fitness apps - a feature that&#39;s become a standard in all smartwatches.</p> <p>Apple is also rumoured to overcome battery life issues by packing the iWatch with a flexible solar charging screen, according to the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/03/technology/building-a-better-battery.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=2" target="_blank">New York Times</a>.</p> <p>Sources &quot;close to the efforts&quot; have revealed that Apple has been working on an iWatch screen with a solar charging layer &ndash; though the technology is reportedly some way off being a practical reality. &nbsp;</p> <p>Apple has already filed patents for a solar charging screen, and Alcatel has previously shown off its own solar charging screen technology.</p> <p>Apple has also experimented with wireless inductive charging similar to that found in some Nokia Lumia smartphones. &nbsp;</p> <p>A 2009 patent reveals that Apple has also dabbled in motion charging, which would use the kinetic energy of the wearer&#39;s swinging arm to top up the iWatch&#39;s battery.</p> <p>Of course we don&#39;t expect Apple to cram all of this charging tech into a single device, but we&#39;re hoping that one or two innovations will be enough to avoid regular charging. The document describes how a light gas like helium could be sealed behind a speaker&rsquo;s cone; when the gas pressure changes, the cone vibrates and makes sound. Usually, outside air is used to vibrate the cone, but using a specific gas instead can result in more precise, more faithful sound reproduction.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s a concept which already exists in some &ldquo;plasma speakers&rdquo;, but these have to be installed in such a way that the movement of the gas can be tightly controlled by alterations in barometric pressure. Apple&rsquo;s idea differs in that it can be used in portable speakers and even headphones. A vented cavity allows outside air to compress the gas through a barrier, keeping the gas sealed inside.</p> <p>As with all patent stories, we&rsquo;d urge you not to get too excited. Even if Apple does release a product packing this tech, such a day is probably years away &ndash; and there&rsquo;s no guarantee that the company will use its patent at all. However, given Apple&rsquo;s recent efforts at boosting its audio reputation (mainly through the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-acquires-beats-us3-billion/news">purchase of headphone maker Beats</a>), we reckon there&rsquo;s a decent chance of some gassy iPhone headphones popping up in the not-too-distant future.</p> <p>[Via <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/07/01/apple-gains-patent-for-high-fidelity-new-gas-filled-speaker-design">AppleInsider</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="The patent diagram of Apple&#039;s gas-filled speakers" alt="The patent diagram of Apple&#039;s gas-filled speakers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-gas-speaker.jpg?1404352125" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-s-future-speakers-and-earphones-be-gas-gas-gas/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Apple Headphones iPhone & iPad Music Wed, 02 Jul 2014 10:17:18 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1440758 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple gets Siri-ous about voice recognition http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-gets-siri-ous-about-voice-recognition/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 could see debut of deep neural nets to rival Microsoft and Google </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="847" title="Will iOS 8 see a smarter Siri?" alt="Will iOS 8 see a smarter Siri?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/iOS8.jpg?1404265532" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Siri is about to get a high-tech upgrade in iOS 8 to improve its voice recognition abilities, according to a report in Wired.</p> <p>Apple looks set to ditch Nuance&#39;s technology for an in-house solution and has poached one of Microsoft&#39;s top scientists to head its team.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/mark-harris" title="View user profile.">Mark Harris</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Deep thought </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>All modern speech recognition systems use neural networks - software composed of virtual neurons that can be trained to match an input to an output by varying the links between them, a bit like the way real brains work.</p> <p>The latest iteration of this mimicry reproduces the layers of neurons found in human brains to create a deep neural network.
