Everything now has to be super-skinny, because it&rsquo;s a factor that can then be used in marketing. Your new smartphone&rsquo;s approximately the same size as an advertising hoarding? We see such problems with Apple&rsquo;s new iPhones, which are beautifully designed pieces of kit that just happen to be too thin to house the camera lens. So while celebrating the fact your iPhone 6 is now precisely 0.7 mm thinner than an iPhone 5s, you can fume that the camera sticks out a bit, making the device wobble when set down on a table.</p> <p>A flush design at the back would have been more aesthetically pleasing, maybe even made the battery slightly bigger, and would have meant Apple&rsquo;s website and photography teams wouldn&rsquo;t have had to clumsily try to pretend a camera bulge didn&#39;t exist. Tablets like the Sony Xperia Z2 are so worryingly thin that they actually have a slight flex; not only does this make an expensive piece of hardware feel worryingly fragile, but also it makes it less comfortable to hold.</p> <p>The new Dell Venue 8 7000 Series is even skinnier, its 6 mm beating the Xperia Z2 by 0.4 mm and the comparatively chunky iPad mini by over 1 mm. Naturally, headlines have been grabbed, for the eleven seconds that Dell&rsquo;s device remains the thinnest tablet that ever thinned, while pretty much no-one wonders whether it might have been better to add some extra heft to boost the battery and speakers.</p> <p>But it looks like thin is here to stay. Intel&rsquo;s Chris Walker has argued in favour of doubling down on the concept of super-skinny tablets, and dreams about ditching bulky ports for charging, data transfer and peripherals. Pretty soon, mobile devices will be so thin ninja will be able to use them as weapons. Frankly, I&rsquo;d rather have a bit more battery life and the means to plug in some headphones.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-releases-ios-8-iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch/news" target="_blank">Apple releases iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" alt="Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/sony-xperia-z2-tablet-01.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" alt="Dell Venue 8 7000 Series" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/dell-inspiron-venue-8-7000-series.jpg?1411058221" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/it-s-time-tech-companies-drop-their-obsession-thin/feature#comments Apple Smartphones Tablets Xperia Z Thu, 18 Sep 2014 16:37:03 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447917 at http://www.stuff.tv SwiftKey for iOS revealed - the best Android keyboard, coming soon to your iPhone http://www.stuff.tv/swiftkey-ios-revealed-best-android-keyboard-your-iphone/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> UPDATE 18/09/14: It&#039;s out now. The Journal&rsquo;s source says that 400,000 iPhone 6 handsets and 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus devices are being made each day.</p> <p>Part of the problem is that the 5.5in display of the iPhone 6 Plus isn&rsquo;t yet being reliably produced, with the facility scrapping nearly half of the components made due to defects. Yes, it still sports a grippy, soft faux-leather back as seen on the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-note-3/samsung-galaxy-note-3/review" target="_blank">Galaxy Note 3</a>, but the tacky fake stitches are gone. Samsung has also &ndash; finally &ndash; embraced metal phone construction, wrapping the Note 4 with a metal band that&#39;s reminiscent of the outgoing <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a>. Round the back there&#39;s a heart-rate sensor, while the home button does double duty as a fingerprint scanner.</p> <p>That pleather back is removable, of course &ndash; letting you swap out the 3,220mAh battery and slip in a microSD card for up to 128GB of extra storage. Unlike the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>, though, the Note 4 isn&#39;t waterproof &ndash; putting it on a level playing field with the iPhone 6 Plus in terms of durability.</p> <p>Apple has overhauled the design language for its smartphone range this year; the iPhone 6 Plus has an all-metal build that ditches the slab-like design of the iPhone 5s for a softer, curvier look. The power button has moved from the top of the phone to the right hand side &ndash; a virtual necessity for a phablet &ndash; while down the bottom there&#39;s the familiar Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It&#39;s extremely thin, its 7.1mm frame making the Note 4 look positively chunky at 8.5mm thick &ndash; though the camera array does protrude from the surface of the phone, which may prove irksome when you&#39;re setting it down on a table.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s design skills are second to none, though; while Samsung&#39;s made great strides with the Note 4, it&#39;s just not quite as desirable as an object.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: iPhone 6 Plus</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">Apple iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/9_1.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-rear_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen: bigger is better </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>For its first foray into phablet territory, Apple has opted for a 5.5in, 1080p screen, delivering 401ppi. The Note sports a Super AMOLED display, which delivers punchy colours, true blacks (thanks to AMOLED&#39;s ability to completely turn off pixels) and wide viewing angles. It can be a bit too vivid, but different screen profiles enable you to dial down the colours if necessary. There&#39;s really no contest here; the Note 4&#39;s screen is a thing of beauty, and on specs alone it leaves the iPhone 6 Plus in the dust.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung-galaxy-note-edge/review">Meet the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge - the 3-sided Note 4</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-screen_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/6_0_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera: OIS for everyone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple has stuck with the same 8MP, &fnof;/2.2 iSight snapper found in the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, augmented with 1.5&micro; pixels &ndash; which Apple claims will deliver swifter autofocus. You also get the nifty two-tone True Tone flash, for better capturing skin tones.</p> <p>For the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple&#39;s kitted out the camera with Optical Image Stabilisation &ndash; a first in an iPhone. It moves the lens components to adjust for your wobbly hands, and should help the camera&#39;s performance in low light situations. The Plus can shoot 1080p video at up to 60fps, and (Apple&#39;s party piece) will also shoot slo-mo video at up to 240fps. The iPhone also features a 1.2MP FaceTime camera, with an &fnof;/2.2 aperture and backside illumination sensor.</p> <p>Sounds impressive, right? The battle lines are drawn, the trenches dug &ndash; and the vitriol will doubtless be spewing in the comment section below.</p> <p>Broadly speaking, though, it boils down to a simple choice. Do you want to tinker with the setup of your phone, or would you rather sacrifice the ability to customise it for the assurance of having someone else curate your experience for you?</p> <p>Apple has added a raft of new features to iOS 8 &ndash; fixing a lot of the criticisms that the &#39;droid faithful direct at it. So you get NFC payment (in the US) with fingerprint authentication; third-party keyboard support; and widgets in the notifications pulldown. Apps will now play nice with each other (though Apple will act as gatekeeper), letting you fiddle with camera filters from all your apps by tapping on a photo, or bid on eBay auctions from the Notification Centre. HealthKit will likewise bring together data from several health apps in one place, making keeping fit a lot simpler.</p> <p>Android and Samsung may have introduced those features first &ndash; but that&#39;s immaterial; what matters is how well Apple&#39;s implemented them. It&#39;s certainly removed a big differentiating factor between the two operating systems.</p> <p>The Note 4 comes loaded with <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-44-kitkat/review" target="_blank">Android 4.4.4 KitKat</a>, skinned with Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz interface. KitKat&#39;s feature set includes the useful Google Now &ndash; which is at times genuinely eerie in its ability to predict your needs before you know them, and at times infuriatingly obtuse.</p> <p>Samsung&#39;s TouchWiz is &ndash; as per usual &ndash; stuffed with features over and above Android 4.4.4&#39;s already-comprehensive set. BlinkFeed-style news feeds, Smart Rotation and Quick Glance are all handy, but none of them are particularly essential. And Multi Window makes the best of the Note&#39;s screen real estate, letting you run two apps side by side &ndash; very handy for work-related tasks.</p> <p>With iOS 8, Apple has have upped its operating system&#39;s feature set to rival Android&#39;s &ndash;&nbsp;but the Note 4 adds features over and above stock Android, thanks to its S Pen and TouchWiz. However, it&#39;s also worth noting that Android still lags behind iOS in terms of app releases, with many developers still creating apps for Apple first &ndash; or not developing for &#39;droid at all.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Tie</strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: iOS 8: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">Everything you need to know about Apple&#39;s new operating system</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="624" height="468" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/8_1_0.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/note-4.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features: The S pen is mightier... </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone&#39;s standout feature is its Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Whether you&#39;re unlocking apps or (new to iOS 8) using it to authenticate transactions, it&#39;s simple and intuitive. The Note 4&#39;s fingerprint sensor is clunky by comparison, though its ability to launch apps using specific fingers is handy. The Note 4 also packs a heart-rate monitor, though we&#39;ll be honest: it&#39;s far less useful than the plethora of heart-rate sensors on fitness trackers.</p> <p>But what really matters here is the S Pen. Samsung&#39;s stylus adds a raft of handy tricks, and is even more intuitive on the Note 4 than on its predecessor. Improved pressure sensitivity allows for natural handwriting, while you now have the ability to highlight text and select multiple photos using the stylus &ndash; far easier than fiddling about with your fingers.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Samsung Galaxy Note 4: the weigh-in" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-4-review-apps_2.jpg?1410971266" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance: A8 vs Snapdragon 805 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Note 4 is an absolute powerhouse &ndash; Qualcomm&#39;s quad-core 2.7GHz Snapdragon 805 processor provides plenty of grunt, paired with 3GB RAM. Samsung even claims that it&#39;ll outdo the Note 3 in terms of battery life, despite having to power its screen&#39;s increased pixel count. And, of course, you can always swap out that battery when it runs out of juice &ndash; good luck doing that on an iPhone, without a chisel and a soldering iron. Similarly, the Note 4&#39;s 32GB of internal storage is expandable by up to 128GB using microSD; the iPhone 6 Plus is limited to a maximum of 128GB internal memory (and that model will cost you more than a 128GB MacBook Air).</p> <p>Apple is notoriously cagey about releasing the specs of its processors, saying only that the 64-bit A8 that underpins the iPhone 6 Plus is &quot;incredibly powerful&quot;, paired with its M8 motion processor. Benchmarking scores show that the Snapdragon 801 chipset found in the Samsung Galaxy S5 comfortably <a href="http://m.gsmarena.com/iphone_6_a8_gpu_benchmark_suggests_its_behind_the_curve-news-9630.php" target="_blank">outperforms</a> the A8 &ndash; so the Note 4&#39;s Snapdragon 805 should do similarly well. However, because Apple keeps a tight leash on its range of phones, app developers can tailor their software to make the most of Apple&#39;s processors; the fragmented Android platform means that devs can&#39;t do the same, even if individual &#39;droids have more processing power to work with.</p> <p>Despite that caveat, the Galaxy Note 4&#39;s raw power suggests that it&#39;ll outperform the iPhone 6 Plus on paper &ndash; though we&#39;ll have to wait until we can get both devices in for a full review before we can deliver a definitive verdict.</p> <p><strong>Verdict: Galaxy Note 4</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Tv7C4e8thv0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict: take note </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple&#39;s making a tentative first step into phablet territory with the iPhone 6 Plus &ndash; and it&#39;s certainly going to appeal to iOS diehards who&#39;ve been desperate for a bigger screen.</p> <p>But Samsung has years of experience making big-screened devices; over the years it&#39;s been making Galaxy Note devices, they&#39;ve evolved from slightly clunky curios into market leaders. Google was reportedly planning to replace that line with Android Silver, a brand for high-end pure Android smartphones, but that may not be the plan anymore.</p> <p>According to a report from The Information, the Android Silver program is &ldquo;on hold&rdquo; and some Google employees don&rsquo;t think it had a particularly rosy future anyway. The summer departure of executive Nikesh Arora from Google is pegged as one reason than plans have changed, but Google&#39;s partners were also reportedly not so keen on the idea.</p> <p>Flagship phones still rule Android fans&rsquo; attention spans, but as great Android handsets become startlingly inexpensive, perhaps it&rsquo;s too much to think that a high-end device can command an exorbitant price above even what top-tier phones cost today. Guess we&rsquo;ll have to wait and see.</p> <p>[Source: <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/Google-s-Android-Silver-Program-on-Ice">The Information</a> via <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/16/6248561/google-android-silver-reportedly-on-hold">The Verge</a>]</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/android-silver-everything-you-need-know-about-google-s-upcoming-range-premium-smartphones/fe">Android Silver: everything you need to know about Google&rsquo;s upcoming range of premium smartphones</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple makes guide for Android converts </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple seems pretty confident that the larger display sizes and revised builds of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are going to pull some current Android users into the iOS fold. But as always, these things are relative.</p> <p>Measuring 5.5 inches, it&rsquo;s not huge as far as rival phone/tablet hybrids are concerned. The forthcoming&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/samsung-galaxy-note-4/review">Samsung Galaxy Note 4</a>&nbsp;will be 5.7 inches, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is a 6-incher and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra is a 6.4in beast. Even so, any iPhone user will gasp at the enormity of it all.</p> <p>Plus, while the display isn&#39;t the absolute biggest, the body itself is ginormous, even next to the iPhone 6 that looks sizeable next to an iPhone 4s. And it&rsquo;s significantly bigger than the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>; while the latter has the same size display, LG&#39;s almost bezel-less design keeps the handset itself looking pretty trim.</p> <p>The LG&rsquo;s screen is significantly higher-resolution, too, with 534 pixels per inch where Apple has included a 1920 x 1080 screen with 401 ppi. But for everyday use, the Apple screen is a cracker, with richer but quieter colours when compared to the G3 and real, naturalistic tones.</p> <p>Playing back high-definition video from YouTube did give LG&rsquo;s screen the edge, as it upscaled content to fill its own sumptuous display, but Apple&rsquo;s Retina display HD performs a remarkable trick (here and on the smaller iPhone 6) of making the display seem right up next to you, so you can almost feel the high-def under your fingerprint.&nbsp; This is easily the best screen on any iPhone and compares well to the competition. It&#39;s subtle, beautiful and pin-sharp.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-samsung-galaxy-s5-weigh/news">iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/A4zs3D_EEYA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Scaling it up </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Many features of the iPhone 6 are simply replicated on the 6 Plus and thanks to an efficient scaler in each of the phones, everything looks pretty much identical on the two, if a little higher-res on the 6 Plus.</p> <p>But the bigger phone does have a few additional features. Chief among them is the new landscape mode: turn the phone to landscape orientation and the home screen will turn too. It&#39;s a transition iPad users will be used to, but is new to Apple&rsquo;s phones with this model. The expectation, presumably, is that like other phone/tablet hybrids, this will be used more in landscape viewing than a regular phone would.</p> <p>So with this in mind some apps have already been optimised to provide a distinct landscape version that doesn&rsquo;t simply enlarge the portrait mode. Messages and Mail both look more like their iPad versions, with horizontal views that show not just a list of message summaries but the list on the left and one email in full on the right. Expect other app makers to come up with their own ways to make the most of all the extra real estate on the 6 Plus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Like its smaller sibling, the iPhone 6 Plus also has a fingerprint sensor with which to unlock the screen. This feature is smoothly efficient and will grow more useful when it works in conjunction with the NFC chip to turn the phone into a contactless payment system.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-best-free-apps-iphone-and-ipad/feature">iCheapskate - 38 amazing free apps for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 Plus review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 Plus review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-Plus-review-iOS-8-1.png?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Design </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, there&rsquo;s more to the phone than the screen. The measurements of the handset are bigger than those of the LG G3 in height and width, but the Apple phone is thinner from front to back at 7.1mm, itself thinner than last year&rsquo;s iPhone 5s. This is important as it&rsquo;s the dimension that you feel the most when holding it one-handed.</p> <p>The curved front and back edges of the iPhone 6 are repeated here and again contribute to the phone being much more manageable than the bald statistics would suggest.</p> <p>Many hands will still find the 6 Plus too gigantic, but if you&rsquo;re in any doubt, try it &ndash; it&rsquo;s not quite what you expect. And different is what we got.</p> <p>Obviously the increased screen size is the main change, but it&#39;s far from the only visual difference. Like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a>, the iPhone 6 has all-metal back with curved edges front and back rather than the flat, 90-degree edges on the 5s. The result is a phone that&rsquo;s super-smooth in the hand with the joins between glossy screen and matte back almost unnoticable as you hold it.</p> <p>And you&rsquo;ll want to hold it &ndash; it feels amazing.</p> <p>The curves make it superbly comfortable in use despite its increased size, while its thin profile also helps; it&rsquo;s just 6.9mm thick, so substantially skinnier than the 7.5mm 5s.&nbsp;</p> <p>On the downside, the camera lens does now protrude from the phone&rsquo;s case, which may not please everyone, while&nbsp;the distinctive light-coloured lines on the back at top and bottom won&#39;t be to all tastes either. The latter, at least, are present for practical as well as aesthetic reasons: with a metal-backed phone it&rsquo;s hard to scoot the signal in and out, and the flush rubberised lines sort this. Certainly call quality on the iPhone 6 is strong and reliable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Overall, it&#39;s a beautifully built bit of kit. Where the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>&nbsp;have to make do with plastic shells - albeit metal-style plastic in the case of the latter - the iPhone 6 feels wholly premium. Only the M8 really runs it close, and that&#39;s a far bigger handset. Every iPhone since the 4 has been a thing of beauty, and the 6 is no exception.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-1.jpg?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-2.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-3.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-4.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A screen dream? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6&#39;s headline feature is its 4.7in display. And with good reason: Apple had only ever upped its screen size once before, and that from 3.5in to 4in. But let&#39;s not get carried away here - by anyone else&#39;s standards, 4.7in is not a huge screen. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - note the word &#39;Compact&#39; - is only a smidgeon smaller at 4.6in. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3, the iPhone remains a pixie in a land of Android ogres.</p> <p>For many people, 4.7in will be the ideal size: big enough to offer a better viewing and gaming experience, without being so big that you can&#39;t use it properly. Of course none of that matters if the quality isn&#39;t there too.</p> <p>Fortunately, it is.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6 is no match in screen resolution terms when compared to the G3 (534 pixels per inch) and Galaxy S5 (432ppi). Apple&rsquo;s screen has just 326ppi, the same as the iPhone 5s. But stats aren&rsquo;t the whole story and one glance at the iPhone 6 confirms this.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S5 has arguably the best screen on the market: rich, vibrant and unbelievably detailed, although the LG G3 runs it very close thanks to the extra pixels on its 2K display. And the iPhone 6 deserves to sit in that exalted company.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s lower-resolution than its rivals, but more than dense enough to look glorious. It also lacks the occasionally over-saturated look of the S5; the Samsung display, though unequivocally beautiful, can still tend to the garish. As far as the LG goes, those extra pixels only really make themselves known when you&rsquo;re reading the tiniest of writing.&nbsp;</p> <p>However we&#39;d be lying if we said that we hadn&#39;t hoped for more. The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">6 Plus</a>&nbsp;has a full HD 1080p screen, as does almost every one of the iPhone 6&#39;s main rivals. While the 6&#39;s display is easily one of the best 720p efforts we&#39;ve used, the differences between it and a full HD screen are visible if you look for them.</p> <p>However, for day-to-day use, there&rsquo;s a limit to what you can see - or at least to what matters. And in those terms, the iPhone 6 is as good as its keenest rivals. Plus, it&rsquo;s just right there: the display seems so pressed up against the glass it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re making direct contact with the pixels.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/why-i-m-dreading-bigger-iphone-6/feature">Why I&#39;m dreading the bigger iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-screen-1.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera tweaks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the millions of sepia-toned hipster-food-photos posted hourly to Instagram prove, the camera is one of the most important things on any phone.&nbsp; So you might have expected Apple to want to match the 16MP sensor of the Galaxy S5 or the 20.7MP on Sony&rsquo;s Xperia&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Z2</a>&nbsp;and Z3. But no, it&rsquo;s stuck with eight megapixels. Eight.</p> <p>Fortunately for Apple, the combination of a good lens, advanced image processing and sublimely simple camera controls in previous iPhones has served it very well. Plus, there&#39;s more to a good camera than lots of pixels - after all, the HTC One (M8) takes great shots with a mere 4MP sensor.</p> <p>Part of the M8&#39;s success is that although it uses fewer pixels, they&#39;re individually bigger than those on most rivals at around 2 microns.&nbsp; The iPhone can&rsquo;t match that, but at 1.5 microns, the Apple pixels are bigger than those on the Samsung Galaxy S5 (1.12 microns).</p> <p>Anyway, that&#39;s the specs out of the way, let&#39;s get back to the real world...</p> <p>Innovations this time around include Focus Pixels. These are called phase detection pixels by other manufacturers and a couple of rival handsets share this feature, notably the Galaxy S5. Phase detection is faster than the more commonly used contrast detection and means nippier autofocus - which in turn should mean snappier snaps with greater sharpness.&nbsp;Last year&rsquo;s iPhone 5s took pictures with no discernible delay anyway, but the iPhone 6 sure is fast. Quality-wise, there&#39;s not a huge amount of difference from the 5s - which means it&#39;s still one of the best out there.</p> <p>Where Apple&rsquo;s camera is consistently better than rivals is in its superbly simple ease of use. No white balance to adjust, no extra granular controls to fiddle with. Now, though, you can deliberately over- or under-expose shots. But don&#39;t fret that this&#39;ll be an unwelcome distraction from the point-and- shoot ethos. In fact, it&rsquo;s wholly intuitive: press on the screen until the yellow exposure box appears. Next to it is a little sun icon with a line through it. As you draw your finger up and down it shows you how dark or light the final pic will be. Easy as pie.</p> <p>Video recording is also improved,&nbsp;with HD filming at 60 frames per second and enhanced slo-mo (now double the frame rate of 240 per second). But there&rsquo;s no 4K video as found on some rivals. Apple&rsquo;s skill has rarely been to be first, so we&#39;re not exactly surprised as its absence. Still, it would have been a nice thing to have. Quality-wise, footage is smooth and looks striking.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-samsung-galaxy-s5-weigh/news">iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-1.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-2.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iPhone 6 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen:</strong> 4.7in 720x1334 IPS LCD (326ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor:</strong> 1.4GHz Apple A8 processor</p> <p><strong>RAM:</strong> (unspecified)</p> <p><strong>OS:</strong> iOS 8</p> <p><strong>Storage:</strong> 16/64/128GB</p> <p><strong>Battery:</strong> (unspecified)</p> <p><strong>Camera:</strong> 8MP 1080p@60fps, 720p@240fps rear, 1.2MP 720p front</p> <p><strong>Connectivity:</strong> Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC (Apple Pay only), 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Dimensions:</strong> 138x67x6.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight:</strong> 129g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Performance is always a tricky thing to judge on iPhones. Look at the stats alone and most high-end Androids leave it in the dust. But use one, and it&#39;ll often feel like the fastest thing since Usain Bolt&#39;s sliced bread. The iPhone 6 is no different.</p> <p>The new iPhone has an improved processor, namely the A8, and whizzes through tasks without the slightest of pauses.&nbsp; The previous A7 was shockingly fast thanks in part to the new 64-bit architecture that arrived on that chip, and that&#39;s obviously retained here. And while the new model doesn&rsquo;t&nbsp;<em>feel</em>&nbsp;any faster, it has more pixels to move around and is&nbsp;probably doing more in the background to boot.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a new motion co-processor, the M8, not to be confused with HTC&rsquo;s flagship. The co-processor now measures altitude thanks to a built-in barometer, so it can monitor when you are climbing or descending stairs. Health apps will make much of this and Apple&rsquo;s own Health app has a dashboard to record your steps, cycling and more, made possible by the new hardware.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/icheapskate-25-amazing-free-games-ipad-and-iphone/feature">iCheapskate - 38 amazing free games for iPhone and iPad</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-extra.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A bigger Battery </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fact: most smartphones have terrible battery life. Just try leaving home in the morning without having charged up overnight. And the more you use your phone, the more quickly the battery drains.&nbsp;</p> <p>It&#39;s a recipe for disaster, and one from which previous iPhones have hardly been immune. The iPhone 5s lasted a Standard Smartphone Day (SSD) - by which we mean you could just about get away with only having to charging it nightly, so long as you didn&#39;t really hammer it during the day. Otherwise, you&#39;ll have wanted that spare charger at work.</p> <p>Happily, the iPhone 6 just goes on and on.&nbsp; In regular use, the phone performed for a full day and well into a second &ndash; a leap forward compared to the iPhone 5s. Additionally, iOS 8 gives you handy warnings about apps which are constantly making data connections, so you can turn the beggars off.</p> <p>We&#39;ll be doing a full battery run-down test soon, at which point we&#39;ll compare it to flagship Androids such as the LG G3, but for now we&#39;ll just say that it lasts longer than any other iPhone.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6-best-deals/news">Apple iPhone 6 - the best contract deals</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/F771ctzYYL4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Features </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The new hardware is faster and more powerful, some of it to service the bigger screen and updated iOS 8 operating software. Eventually, it will lead to more sparkly games, faster and more powerful apps. Already, Apple has added its own Health app, of which more below.</p> <p>Sadly, some of the newest, spangliest of features on the iPhone can&rsquo;t be reviewed yet in the UK. One of the most striking is Apple Pay, which uses a combo of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a newly arrived NFC chip in the phone to turn the handset into a contactless credit card. Demonstrations we saw last week in Cupertino were certainly seamless and speedy, so assuming Apple is able to do the deals with UK banks and credit card companies that it&rsquo;s done in the States, this could be a very big deal.</p> <p>Of course, Android phones have had similar features for some time. EE customers have the Cash On Tap app on various phones, including the S5, which turns the phone into a virtual Oyster card, for instance. But NFC hasn&rsquo;t really taken off yet. Apple Pay could change this.</p> <p>Other phones have fingerprint sensors, too, but the Apple model is superb not least because it&rsquo;s effort-free. By resting your thumb or finger on the home button as you would to wake the phone, the Touch ID feature is invoked. The Samsung Galaxy S5 by contrast requires a swiping movement to make it work - definitely a little less intuitive.</p> <p>Similarly, there&#39;s VoLTE - that&rsquo;s Voice over LTE - which promises to deliver voice calls through 4G data; handy if your 2G signal is weak at home, say. It needs both handsets to be on VoLTE and for networks to play ball. EE is involved but the service hasn&rsquo;t been rolled out yet. The feature is partly made possible by a faster LTE chip which can deliver up to 150Mbps downloads, when the networks can match this.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/what-apple-watch-can-tell-us-about-iphone-7-and-ipad-air-3/feature">What Apple Watch can tell us about iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-2.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6 arrives running Apple&#39;s new iOS 8, available from today on all iPhones from the 4s onwards in addition to various iPads and iPod touch models.</p> <p>It looks mostly like last year&rsquo;s radically restyled iOS 7, but if 7 was all about design changes, 8 is all about openness, customisation and communication.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are immediate benefits to apps such as Messages, which will now let you easily send voice files, photos and videos at the touch of a button in the text area. And below that you&#39;ll find the all-new predictive keyboard, which aims to guess which word you&rsquo;re about to type before you&rsquo;ve keyed in the first letter. This is splendid and works well. Third-party companies such as the excellent Swiftkey are also now able to produce their own keyboards for the iPhone &ndash; something Apple hadn&rsquo;t permitted until now.</p> <p>Bigger improvements still include Handoff, which enables you to start tapping an email out on your iPhone keyboard and then carry it on seamlessly on a Mac using the latest Yosemite software. This also means that when a phone call comes in you can answer it on your Mac or on another Apple device &ndash; handy if your phone is snuggling on the windowsill where the mobile phone signal is strongest while you&rsquo;re ensconced next to the TV in the other room. We weren&#39;t able to test these features, as Yosemite is still in beta release mode, but we&#39;ll update this review as soon as we&#39;re able.</p> <p>Most importantly of all, there&rsquo;s the new Health app, which allows other apps to contribute to the fitness monitoring that Health collates. This is another feature that&rsquo;s in its early stages and it&rsquo;s going to be interesting to see what happens if you have multiple fitness devices which report different step counts, for example. Apple stresses that each app only takes part if you give it permission.</p> <p>Still, the basic app looks pretty neat, with the restrained, classy styling you&rsquo;d expect, though Samsung&#39;s S Health app looks spiffy, too and both are outclassed by the LifeLog software on Sony&rsquo;s phones.</p> <p>And finally there&rsquo;s iCloud Drive, which brings Apple up to date with the document-sharing capabilities other platforms already boast. Just as with iCloud, which syncs your contacts, calendars and more across multiple devices, iCloud Drive saves documents across all of your Apple gadgets and on icloud.com.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/how-back-your-iphone-and-ipad-you-install-ios-8/feature">How to back up your iPhone and iPad before installing iOS 8</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-1.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="820" height="1150" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-3-portrait.png?1410950948" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In order to really judge the iPhone 6 you first have to consider what it&#39;s not.</p> <p>It&#39;s not a mega-screened wannabe phablet. It&#39;s not a 2K-display-packing pixel king. It&#39;s not the most powerful phone ever, it&#39;s not the most megapixelly phone ever, it&#39;s not even the longest-lastingest phone ever. The best Androids still beat it on all these counts.</p> <p>But that&#39;s just specs. What it is, is the best iPhone ever.</p> <p>It&#39;s a real looker, with an amazingly slim and deeply attractive build. It feels lovely in the hand, despite the extra size. It has the best screen of any iPhone - big enough to be useful, with gorgeous colours. It&#39;s the most powerful iPhone ever, even if in use all you&#39;ll know is that it feels very fast. It has the best battery of any iPhone ever, lasting well into a second day. And it also packs some of Apple&#39;s biggest software innovations in years, although we&#39;ll have to wait for the likes of Apple Pay to make their way over here.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s, for all its qualities, didn&#39;t do enough to put Apple back on top. It just lagged too far behind its Android rivals in key areas.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the iPhone 6, with its combination of fresh new form factor, the upcoming links to desktop via Yosemite and the promise of Apple Pay, might just do the trick.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div The 5s it replaced originally came in three storage sizes: 16, 32 and 64 GB. The difference between each tier was &pound;80 in the UK, meaning you essentially got double the &lsquo;value&rsquo; (in terms of storage) when shifting from 32 to 64 as you did from 16 to 32 - a basic upsell, and one that&rsquo;s fairly typical at the high-end of a technology line. It&rsquo;s a simple psychological trick that makes people feel &lsquo;rewarded&rsquo; for buying the most expensive item in a line - and spend more money than they otherwise would have.</p> <p>With the iPhone 6, the rumour-mill guessed - or at least hoped - we&rsquo;d see 32/64/128 as the configurations for the new device, not least given that memory prices continue to fall; instead, we got <em>16</em>/64/128, but still the same 80-quid gap between each. In an age of increasingly huge apps and games, and on a high-end smartphone, 16 GB seems rather ludicrous from a storage perspective, and it comes as no surprise to see online polls suggesting most iPhone 6 buyers have bought the 64 GB model.</p> <p>This seems like a direct result of Apple&rsquo;s negative pricing tactics, attempting to push you from the lower end rather than tempt you towards the top. We&rsquo;ve gone from &lsquo;good/better/best&rsquo; to &lsquo;meh/BUY ME! BUY ME!/best&rsquo;.</p> <p>The cheapest iPhone 6 (for a given value of cheap, which is &lsquo;not very&rsquo;) now looks expensive when compared to the middle option, which boasts four times the storage. Instead of feeling rewarded for jumping from the second to third model, Apple&rsquo;s made the first a relatively poor choice. If enough people think similarly (which seems to have happened), that raises the average selling price of the iPhone, and swells Apple&rsquo;s coffers. But had Apple started its line at 32 GB, you can bet a whole lot more people would have gone for the cheapest model, because it would have been &lsquo;good enough&rsquo;. Apple&rsquo;s existing stance is a win for Apple, but it&rsquo;s hard to see how it&rsquo;s a win for the consumer.</p> <p>We see similar pricing elsewhere in Apple&rsquo;s other product lines. The 21.5-inch iMac has three options, each &pound;150 apart. But the low-end model is <em>significantly</em> slower, with half the storage and far worse built-in graphics. It addresses a possible need for a sub-&pound;1000 iMac, but at the same time seems designed primarily to drive more sales of the mid-end model. Even in iCloud, we see cynical decision making in evidence, with the free tier lacking the space for even a single device back-up, thereby pushing people hard to part with &pound;0.69 per month or more.</p> <p>Apple&rsquo;s hardly alone; the idea of upselling is rife throughout commerce, not least because people are prone to making poor and irrational financial decisions, and are easily led and influenced. (<a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/dan_ariely_asks_are_we_in_control_of_our_own_decisions#t-414964">Dan Ariely&rsquo;s TED talk</a> offers a particularly entertaining explanation about this.)</p> <p>And as long as you know the tricks being played on you and get a decent device you&rsquo;re truly happy with, you might argue Apple&rsquo;s pricing structure doesn&rsquo;t really matter; but it does take the shine off all the pretty hardware when Apple&rsquo;s accountants don&rsquo;t so much arm themselves with a carrot and stick as throw the carrot in the bin and bludgeon to death the low-end of Apple lines with the surprisingly weighty stick.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/what-apple-watch-can-tell-us-about-iphone-7-and-ipad-air-3/feature">What Apple Watch can tell us about the iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature#comments Apple Opinion Tue, 16 Sep 2014 12:20:56 +0000 Craig Grannell 1447712 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: iPhone 6 notches record pre-orders, first Windows-only branded phone spotted, and Apple releases U2 album removal tool http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-iphone-6-notches-record-pre-orders-first-windows-only-branded-phone-spotted-and- <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Load up on all of the quick-hit tech news you need to begin the day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus" alt="iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-iphone6-6plus.jpg?1410849181" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple posts record iPhone 6 and 6 Plus pre-orders </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus bright and early last Friday, many potential purchasers complained of issues with both the Apple Store and various carriers. You can go even cheaper if you opt for a 500MB data plan of course, but we think 1GB should be around the bare minimum for most users.</p> <p>2GB of monthly data pushes the price up a bit, but the handset itself is still a reasonable &pound;50, for the 16GB version at least. Once the data/storage capacity creeps up however, things get substantially pricier. And that&#39;s true for all networks.</p> <p>Things get a little pricier above 4GB of 4G data a month, but you can grab a 10GB data plan for &pound;48.50 along with a free 16GB iPhone 6 if you trade in your existing device. That also includes six months of Netflix and either Spotify or Sky Sports Mobile TV.</p> <p>There&#39;s no trade-in discount available for the higher capacity models mind, so the 10GB plan jumps up to If you buy an iPhone 6 <a href="http://store.apple.com/uk/iphone" target="_blank">directly from Apple</a> for &pound;540 and take out Three&#39;s &pound;18 a month unlimited data contract for two years, that&#39;s a total cost of around &pound;970.</p> <p>Of course, you&#39;re splashing out more than &pound;500 in one go with the second option, so it&#39;s all about finding the best balance for you.&nbsp;</p> <p>Prices will also go down as they always do, and if you&#39;re still running a 5s there&#39;s plenty of reasons to opt for that too, especially as we expect its contract prices to drop once the iPhone 6 is released.</p> <p><strong><a href="http://www.three.co.uk/iPhone/iPhone_6" target="_blank">View the rest of Three&#39;s iPhone 6 tariffs</a></strong></p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/x-reasons-ditch-your-iphone-5s-iphone-6/feature" target="_blank">iPhone 5s vs iPhone 6: should you upgrade?</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="953" height="715" title="Three" alt="Apple iPhone 6: the best deals" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/three.jpg?1410954150" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6-best-deals/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6-best-deals/news#comments Apple iPhone 6 Smartphones Mon, 15 Sep 2014 16:21:23 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1447703 at http://www.stuff.tv
