According to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-11-10/apple-said-developing-curved-iphone-screens-enhanced-sensors.html" target="_blank">Bloomberg</a>, Apple is working on 4.7in and 5.5in iPhone models. Whether or not these are experimental&nbsp;prototypes&nbsp;or final products remains to be seen, but at least we can generally agree that, whatever the final size, the iPhone 6 will arrive with the biggest screen yet seen on an&nbsp;Apple&nbsp;smartphone.</p> <p>Not only that, but Bloomberg&#39;s source also states that the iPhone 6 will arrive with a curved glass display which &nbsp;wraps around the edge of the device. Watch out <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g-flex/lg-g-flex/review" target="_blank">LG G Flex</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/samsung/meet-samsung-galaxy-round-note-3-curved-screen/news" target="_blank">Samsung Galaxy Round</a>.</p> <p><strong>Update 21/01/14</strong> Analyst Sun Changxu <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-prepping-47in-and-57in-iphone-6-june-launch/news" target="_blank">backs up</a> Bloomberg&#39;s claims of smaller and larger iPhone 6 variants, differing only in the specifics &ndash; apparently the larger iPhone will sport a 5.7in screen.</p> <p><strong>Update 23/01/14 </strong>Another day, another analyst chipping in with more claims of a big-screen iPhone. This time it&#39;s the Cowen Group&rsquo;s Timothy Arcuri who&#39;s been consulting the entrails and the paths of migrating birds (or, you know, sources in the supply chain), concluding that the iPhone 6 is <a href="http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/22/analyst-apples-iphone-6-design-locked-down-with-48-display-80211ac-wi-fi" target="_blank">&quot;locked down&quot;</a> with a 4.8in screen.</p> <p>Oh, and finally, Apple is also reportedly tinkering away on a pressure-sensitive display which can detect how hard&nbsp;you&#39;re&nbsp;pressing it, although it&#39;s unlikely that the magical tech will be present in the next iPhone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="717" height="538" title="Apple iPhone 6" alt="Apple iPhone 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-6-render-3.jpg?1397744289" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More megapixels </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 5s has an excellent camera with dual-tone flash for more natural colour reproduction, and we expect the same flash to remain in the iPhone 6.&nbsp;</p> <p>Given the iPhone 6&rsquo;s larger screen (and therefore larger build) though, we could also see a bump in megapixels and sensor size as there&rsquo;ll be more room for Apple to play around with.</p> <p><strong>Update 13/01/14:&nbsp;</strong>China&#39;s Nomura Security has told the <a href="http://www.slashgear.com/iphone-6-camera-tipped-to-retain-8-megapixel-sensor-11312866/" target="_blank">China Post</a> that the iPhone 6 won&#39;t be bumping up its megapixel count.&nbsp;</p> <p>Instead, it&#39;ll apparently keep the same 8MP camera that&#39;s currently nestled inside the iPhone 5s, with one major improvement &ndash; already expressed our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/here-s-what-ios-8-going-look/news" target="_blank">skepticism </a>regarding the Preview and TextEdit icons.&nbsp;</p> <p>Taken straight from Mac OS X, they don&#39;t match the flat graphics of iOS 8 at all, suggesting that they&#39;re placeholder icons.</p> <p>Why you&#39;d need Preview or TextEdit in iOS 8 in the first place is a different matter entirely, and we&#39;re not convinced they even need to exist, given the existing Notes and gallery apps which presumably carry out the same functionality.</p> <p>Tips is likely to be an app aimed at new users who are unfamiliar with iOS 8, and we&#39;re personally going to file it in our useless apps folder, next to the Stocks app.</p> <p>And as for Healthbook&hellip;</p> While the HTC One (M8) is arguably better put together than the iPhone 5s, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a plastic phone with a removeable back. True, it&rsquo;s the best-made plastic phone with a removeable back that Samsung&rsquo;s engineers have produced to date, but it&rsquo;s still a long way behind the 5s (and most other flagship smartphones) when it comes to solidity. Crank up the volume on the S5&rsquo;s speakers, for instance, and the casing will begin to vibrate.</p> <p dir="ltr">All that jazz about the S5 being waterproof? Well, it&#39;s true that you don&rsquo;t have to worry about sending the S5 into a watery grave when you&rsquo;re at the beach. But when you&rsquo;re about to charge the Android smartphone via its microUSB cable? The cover that protects the microUSB port from water will be a real pain to remove. Every. Single. Time.</p> <p dir="ltr">And while we&#39;re talking ergonomics, don&rsquo;t forget: the iPhone 5s&rsquo; Lightning connector plugs in both ways. But on the looks front alone, it&#39;s clear to anyone with a set of functioning eyes and a sense of taste that the iPhone is a better prospect. In good light, the S5 delivers amazing shots time and time again with little need for fiddling or adjusting settings. The iPhone is a better performer in the gloom, but overall we think the S5&#39;s outdoor detail and punch &ndash; not to mention its abilities with 4K video capture &ndash; give it a slight edge here.</p> <p><strong>Winner</strong>: Samsung Galaxy S5</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S5%2003.JPG?1397657734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple%20iPhone%205s%2002.JPG?1397657734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">The Galaxy S5 sports Qualcomm&rsquo;s latest 2.5GHz quad-core Krait processor &ndash; a Snapdragon 801, to be precise &ndash; and marries it to 2GB of RAM for impressive all-round performance. There&#39;s the occasional stutter when navigating Samsung&#39;s own UI, but nothing we&#39;d call problematic.</p> <p dir="ltr">Apple, meanwhile, touts the virtues of the 64-bit A7 processor in the iPhone 5s. But do you really <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">need a 64-bit processor</a>? In the long run, yes. But right now, the main purpose of Apple&#39;s 64-bit processor is to power the iPhone&#39;s Touch ID fingerprint sensor.&nbsp;Even without a 64-bit processor, having four cores running at 2.5GHz on the S5 is going to make the iPhone 5s&rsquo; dual-core A7 look like a chump.</p> <p dir="ltr">Theoretically, anyway: it&#39;s difficult to compare two phones that run different operating systems, but we can&#39;t say that the (dual-core, sub-1GB of RAM) 5s performs noticeably poorer than the Samsung S5. The S5 has none of the limitations that the iPhone 5s imposes on its users. You can freely transfer files between the S5 and your desktop or laptop. It has loads of apps on the Google Play Store, and at times, exclusive apps only available on Samsung devices. Everything that&rsquo;s great about the Android interface gets bumped up with more customised features to give you easier access.</p> <p dir="ltr">But it can get overwhelming. Samsung has traditionally packed its phones with bloatware that complicates the user experience. Its calendar app, for example, is a far cry from the simple UI on the stock Android interface. Samsung&#39;s customised apps, meant to integrate the features of the phone, add too much to the table (that said, we&#39;ve found TouchWiz on the S5 to be its best iteration yet, and Samsung has streamlined things to a welcome degree &ndash; it&#39;s still not as clean as stock Android or iOS, but it&#39;s getting there).</p> <p dir="ltr">On the other hand, for iDevices, even when it comes to wireless file transfers, you&rsquo;ll need to use AirDrop. Whatever you think of Siri as a day-to-day tool, it arguably comes into it&rsquo;s own in this environment because most, if not all, in-car voice control systems are command based rather than being able to cope with natural speech as Siri does.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, in our demonstration by an Apple technician on the Ferrari stand at Geneva, Siri received route instructions to US destinations but was unable to interpret a UK-based postcode or village name using his iPhone. Maps did happily accept the same code when typed in using the touch screen, though, and provided decent route instructions back to the UK. This is an example of how Siri makes use of destination data stored in an individual iPhone to recognise locations. It&#39;s part of what makes CarPlay so smart: it provides the first ever sat-nav whose settings are transparently personalised to each individual user, using all the rich data gathered by your smartphone during day-to-day use.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it&#039;s M25 time." alt="Why Apple CarPlay and its competitors are the future of in-car tech" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CarPlay_Honda_Music-PRINT.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When in the CarPlay screen, touching a Ferrari logo takes you back into the Ferrari home screen to interact with the car&rsquo;s settings, so the two are kept quite separate. Ferrari will roll the system out in the new California T in June, but more work needs to be done to introduce CarPlay to some of its other cars, such as the 458, whose screens are in a different format.&nbsp;</p> <p>Although it&rsquo;s starting in pole position, Ferrari won&rsquo;t be the only manufacturer to take CarPlay. Volvo announced it will launch the system in the XC90 next year, Nissan will also be also introducing it to the lineup in 2015 and so will 14 other manufacturers at some stage, including Mercedes. Does CarPlay represent the future of in-car Infotainment systems? Judging by the seamless way the iPhone integrates with the Ferrari and that fact that for an existing iPhone user, the learning curve is zero, it certainly looks that way.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Volvo XC90" alt="Is Apple CarPlay the future of in-car infotainment?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/volvo.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> What about Android? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Apple is by no means uniquely qualified to dramatically upgrade the in-car infotainment experience. Android&#39;s own &#39;Projected Mode&#39; (as leaked in a job posting from Daimler, Mercedes-Benz&#39; parent company) should be capable of aping the CarPlay experience with attached Android devices, and Google Now is already serving up contextually useful data to Android users based on what it know of their calendar, contacts and tastes. Certainly, it&#39;s already more powerful in this regard than Siri. It&#39;s going to be particularly interesting to see how the Google Now experience translates to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/8-things-you-need-know-about-android-wear/feature">Google&#39;s Android Wear smartwatches</a>.</p> <p>This leaves Google in a strong position to take CarPlay on.&nbsp;Indeed, while Ferrari has no specific plans to introduce an Android solution to its cars in the near future, one senior insider says he thinks that will follow once the CarPlay has been fully integrated into the rest of the range. It looks like the battle to provide your in-car infotainment will have little to do with proprietary systems from competing car giants; instead, it&#39;ll be very similar to the one that&#39;s already going on in our pockets.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/geneva-motor-show-2014-12-most-amazing-cars-and-concepts/feature">Geneva Motorshow 2014: the 12 most amazing cars and concepts</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> <p>[Ferrari FF interior image:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2012-ferrari-ff-official-photos-and-info-ferrari-ff-news" target="_blank">Car and Driver</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature#comments Apple Cars iOS iPhone 5 iPhone 5C iPhone 5S Smartphones Sun, 13 Apr 2014 12:13:06 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1435360 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple iWatch looks likely to launch alongside the iPhone 6 in September http://www.stuff.tv/apple-iwatch-looks-likely-launch-alongside-iphone-6-september/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We could see Apple&#039;s timepiece hit the stage in five months&#039; time </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A rather pretty iWatch concept" alt="Apple iWatch looks likely to launch alongside the iPhone 6 in September" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/iwatch-s.jpg?1397124223" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple will reveal the iWatch in September alongside the <a data-cke-saved-href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6</a>, if the latest rumours are to be believed.</p> <p>The news comes courtesy of Taiwan's Economic Daily News which reports that Apple suppliers TPK, Richtek and Quanta Computer have all been ordered to start production on various iWatch components.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iWatch heading for September release? In previous years, Apple had introduced a new top-tier iPhone and offered the outgoing model as a slightly cheaper; with the 5c, it effectively replaced the iPhone 5 in its line-up. Going by Apple&#39;s slides, a budget iPhone is certainly a possibility, in order to compete with the likes of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/motorola/motorola-moto-g/review" target="_blank">Motorola Moto G</a>.</p> <p>So while the slide isn&#39;t conclusive proof that bigger and cheaper iPhones are in the works, it certainly shows that Apple is aware of the competition &ndash; and worried about it. Holding down the shutter button in the camera app could initiate focus, while a harder press could then snap a photo, without you having to take your finger off the screen.</p> <p>While it might seem a little far fetched now, the technology already exists, and it&#39;s been proven to work. According to Reuters&#39; supply chain sources, Apple is working on two new devices - a 4.7in iPhone and a larger 5.5in phablet.</p> <p>The 5.5in version will apparently go into production several months after its smaller brother, due to complications arising from building the touch sensitive element directly into a larger screen.</p> <p>As usual, plenty of salt should be sprinkled on all these rumours. Love Excel, Word and PowerPoint? Then today&rsquo;s your lucky day, because Microsoft has just launched a version of Office specially tailored for Apple&rsquo;s tablet.</p> <p>The three separate apps (the fourth part of Office, Outlook, is not getting its own app) boast an interface designed with touch control very much at the forefront, as well a beautifully clean look. Documents can be retrieved from and saved to a OneDrive or SharePoint account.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>You can download the apps from today for free, although if you want to edit documents in any of them you&rsquo;ll need a Microsoft Office 365 subscription, which costs &pound;80 a year (a more affordable Office 365 Personal option will arrive in the spring). You can view documents or give presentations without having to pay a penny, however.</p> <p>With over a billion people using Office every day, Microsoft clearly thinks that there&rsquo;s plenty of call for it on the iPad. And that it&rsquo;ll sell a lot of new Office 365 subscriptions. But there is the possibility that, having waited so long to bring Office to the iPad, Microsoft has already lost the battle for tablet productivity apps. Apple&rsquo;s own iWork productivity suite has been available on the iPad from day one, while Google Drive (which is free, of course) allows users to create and edit documents across all sorts of devices, including the iPad.</p> <p>Nonetheless, Microsoft appears to have done a good job in bringing a functional Office to Apple&rsquo;s tablet, and once we&rsquo;ve spent some time with it we&rsquo;ll let you know what we think.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Word on iPad" alt="Word on iPad" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/word-on-ipad.jpg?1396601342" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/microsoft-announces-office-ipad/news" target="_blank">read more</a></p> Apple iOS apps iPad Microsoft Thu, 27 Mar 2014 19:04:30 +0000 Sam Kieldsen 1434433 at http://www.stuff.tv
