What&#39;s involved? You sign up, download an app and you&#39;re in line to help test and review other apps on the App Store. Pretty simple, huh?</p> <p>Third-party developers can invite up to 1,000 people to beta test &ndash; an tenfold increase on Apple&#39;s originally-announced plan of just 100 testers.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What happens is that a developer sends out invitations, users then download the app via iTunes Connect and then download TestFlight. iOS 8 also helps notify users when the latest builds of beta apps are available, which is pretty handy compared to waiting for developer emails.</p> <p>As for updates, they&#39;re going to take a little longer due to Apple needing to vet the apps via its Beta App Review. Still, having the Big A run the rule over apps first isn&#39;t necessarily a bad thing &ndash; it reduces the likelihood of pre-release software messing up your iPhone or iPad. One of the pitfalls of Google Play is its reliance on peer review, meaning it&#39;s all too easy for malware and shady apps to sneak into the app marketplace.</p> <p>The TestFlight Beta app is <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8" target="_blank">free on the App Store</a> but it would be a good idea to get the lowdown on the program at the <a Today&rsquo;s smartphones can be a window into all human knowledge and media, along with providing access to quite literally every LOLcat that currently exists on the internet.</p> <p>But as modern technology barrels along, evolving at breakneck pace, people&rsquo;s ability to adapt to threats simply isn&rsquo;t keeping up.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Perhaps the biggest change in technology we&rsquo;ve seen in recent years is an overt shift to computing devices as appliances. Whereas in the early 1980s, you&rsquo;d have sat there in front of a command line, in relatively full control of a machine, now you&rsquo;re often almost reduced to an automaton, a component of a flesh/smartphone cyborg, prodding at a glass screen as apps attempt to worm their way into your data. Increasingly, we&rsquo;re asked to make very important decisions that may require involved thought or investigation, but that can effectively be dismissed by tapping a tempting OK button.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-6/review">Everything you need to know about the Google Nexus 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s hard to know what the core of the problem is. It&rsquo;s easy to argue ignorance or outright stupidity, but that&rsquo;s entirely unfair on people who aren&rsquo;t proficient with technology, and it veers far too close to victim-blaming when things happen to go wrong. Weariness is certainly a part of it, though - the net result of the constant micromanagement that now comes with owning a mobile device; it&rsquo;s often too easy to just hit OK a bunch of times to make something be quiet and go away, in order to get yourself some peace.</p> <p>Mostly, though, it seems that as technology&rsquo;s transformed itself and developed a friendlier face, people are simply more likely to be more trusting. When an app installs, your first thought isn&rsquo;t that it might be designed to perform nefarious tasks; when a product wants to integrate with your existing data, your first thought isn&rsquo;t that it&rsquo;s performing social engineering, aiming to get at your data, and perhaps send it on to a repository in one of the seedier corners of the internet.</p> <p>And yet recently we&rsquo;ve again seen the damage mobile apps can do. Reports showed many people integrated Snapchat with a third-party site called snapsaved.com, which promised to save their pictures to the desktop, rather than have them vanish seconds after arrival; instead, it got hacked and hundreds of thousands of their photos are now in the hands of unscrupulous &lsquo;hackers&rsquo;, and are in the process of being leaked online.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/new-ipads-new-macs-no-u2-hopefully-what-expect-apple-s-16-october-event/feature">New iPads! New Macs! No U2! What to expect from Apple&#39;s 16 October event</a></strong></p> <p>Further ramming home how absurd things have gotten, Snoopwall issued a&nbsp;<a href="http://www.snoopwall.com/threat-reports-10-01-2014/">flashlight apps threat assessment report</a>&nbsp;earlier this month. The gist was that although flashlights only really need permission to access a device&rsquo;s flash and screen, many treat a device as a free-for-all, asking for permission for network access, GPS, status bar modification, vibration control, Wi-Fi connection viewing, and more.</p> <p>The 10 flashlight apps assessed by Snoopwall may together have had more than&nbsp;<em>half a billion</em>&nbsp;installs. While there&#39;s no suggestion that any of these apps are actually abusing those permissions, it&#39;s tempting to wonder how many people even considered that they might have done.&nbsp; How many people denied them access to critical system components and data? And how many were just accepting of the apps, trusting them, or quick to dismiss the lists of permissions because they were a momentary inconvenience?</p> <p>And before you scoff at how you&rsquo;d of course never allow that to happen to you, are you sure? How many services you don&#39;t really know well are linked to your Twitter or Facebook account? How many apps where you in reality know nothing about the developer have access to your contacts, your photos, and more?</p> <p>Technology will only become more ubiquitous as time moves on, melting further into the background, and becoming increasingly invisible. As it does so, our acceptance of it - our trust in it - must be countered by a layer of suspicion and investigation. If an app or a website wants something from you, question why. And if you&rsquo;re not convinced, don&rsquo;t tap OK - tap Cancel and then delete.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/why-you-shouldn-t-celebrate-cd-ripping-finally-becoming-legal-uk/feature" target="_blank">Why you shouldn&rsquo;t celebrate CD-ripping finally becoming legal in the UK</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="600" height="450" title="We might have made this up" alt="We can&#039;t keep ignoring privacy threats lurking within iPhones and Android device" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ios-security-notification.jpg?1413335117" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="631" height="473" title="Snapsave" alt="We can&#039;t keep ignoring privacy threats lurking within iPhones and Android device" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/snapsave.jpg?1413335117" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/android/we-can-no-longer-be-complacent-about-privacy-threats-lurking-within-iphones-and-android-devi#comments Android iPhone Tue, 14 Oct 2014 17:07:56 +0000 Craig Grannell 1450141 at http://www.stuff.tv Apple releases iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-releases-ios-8-iphone-ipad-and-ipod-touch/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The servers are swamped and it requires lots of space, but the new iOS is here </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS 8" alt="iOS 8" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-ios8-preview_0.jpg?1411003468" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>As planned, Apple has released its latest major mobile operating system update, iOS 8, to a select array of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices - The basic control method is along the lines of <em>Papertoss</em> and <em>Flick Kick Football</em>: just swipe up and across the bottom of the screen to fire the ball back over the net.</p> <p>Beyond that you can add spin by switching direction just after contact, and the speed and length of your swing affects the power of your shot. You can also choose from two serving styles: swipe up through the ball for an almost foolproof straight hit, or double tap to tee up the ball, then let fly with all the power and spin you can muster. The latter is quite easy to fluff, so if the game is hanging by a thread it&#39;s advisable to play it safe.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A simple &quot;flick&quot; control makes it easy to get into" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0812.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Table Tennis Touch - learning the basics" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0810_0.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A career in table tennis </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On top of that solid base, Table Tennis Touch builds a game structure that elevates it way beyond those aforementioned ball flickers.</p> <p>The heart of the game is the Career mode, which is based around a series of knockout competitions. don&#39;t normally get that excited about an iPhone case, especially a large, heavy one. But the FLIR One isn&#39;t really a case; it&#39;s an infrared camera that uses your iPhone 5/5S as a screen.</p> <p>Most things emit more infrared radiation the hotter they are, so the FLIR One can see heat. It can see if your house is poorly insulated, it can see through smoke and in total darkness, it can tell you exactly how hot your porridge is, just by looking at it.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/will-dunn" title="View user profile.">Will Dunn</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> hot shots </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>This opens up some interesting, if limited, creative options for photography, but mainly the FLIR One is about practical applications: it can see through walls to a certain extent, so you can use it to avoid drilling through your water pipes, or to see where heat is escaping from your house.</p> <p>The man who demonstrated the FLIR One to us at MWC also suggested that a woman driving into a dark car park at night could use it to check for potential assailants. To get it off of me, you&rsquo;d have had to prise it out of my cold dead hands. Even then I&rsquo;d have found some way to return as a zombie, eat your brains, and get my iPhone back. It did convergence right for the first time: email, web, reading, photography, video, gaming, mapping, music-making. It looked good too.</p> <p>Subsequently, I got the feeling of diminishing returns, despite Retina displays freeing my eyes from the horror of visible pixels. By the time the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-5/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5</a> arrived, upgrade enthusiasm had dwindled. I didn&rsquo;t really care, a feeling cemented by a demo model that lurked in my office for weeks while put through its paces. It was too big, too light, and the new connector irked.</p> <p>But Apple apparently laces devices with pixie dust that soaks into your skin and reformats your brain. I&rsquo;d not thoroughly enjoyed the iPhone 5 experience, but my iPhone 4s suddenly felt cramped, squat, slow and heavy.</p> <p>I started to read rumour sites about the iPhone 5&rsquo;s successor, alternating such episodes with pouring bleach into my eyes to take away the pain I was experiencing from the sheer deluge of stupid. (&ldquo;Apple rumoured to be working on seven different iPhones, two of which are made from koalas&rsquo; tears.&rdquo; &ldquo;Sources state iPhone 5s to be a pyramid that sings Tom Jones songs.&rdquo;)</p> <p>Eventually, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a> arrived, championed by Stuff as &ldquo;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">ingenious, forward-thinking and powerful</a>&rdquo;, although the same review added that the iPhone was &ldquo;stuck in its ways&rdquo;. Two months of daily iPhone 5s use later and I&rsquo;m inclined to agree &mdash; but Apple&rsquo;s latest nonetheless reinvigorated my passion for the line.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="The iPhone 5 couldn&#039;t light my fire" alt="The iPhone 5 couldn&#039;t light my fire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-new-main%20%281%29.jpg?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="375" title="Remember this chunky thing?" alt="Remember this chunky thing?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iPhone-3GS_0_0.jpg?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SCREEN SAVER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I still hate the screen, but I also love the screen. I have to stretch a bit &mdash; a real first-world non-problem &mdash; but reason that at least I don&rsquo;t need the kind of banana fingers required to operate certain Android monsters.</p> <p>What&rsquo;s better about the bigger screen is it feels more natural for the content that&rsquo;s usually welded to my iPhone: in portrait, Twitter, Safari and other text-oriented apps show more content; games in widescreen are less obscured by fidgeting thumbs, thereby making me approximately one per cent better at <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/boson-x/id660600531" target="_blank">Boson X</a>. (If you have a Boson X addiction, you&rsquo;ll know just how terrifically important this is.)</p> <p>Like the 5 before it, the 5s&rsquo;s case design to integrate the larger display is rather clever. Apple almost managed to retain the older iPhone&rsquo;s dimensions, meaning you get a lot more screen in an only slightly longer unit. It&rsquo;s still very pocketable, even when entombed in a natty cover (or, in my case, one that looks like a cassette tape, because I&rsquo;m old). Two months in and I wouldn&rsquo;t go back &mdash; not that I could, with Apple being a one-screen-size-fits-all kind of company. Make of that what you will &mdash; perhaps an angry frog with a warm behind should be writing this feature.</p> <p>That I perhaps stick with devices for too long means I also notice leaps in power. It was immediately apparent on first using the iPhone 5s and firing everything I could think of at it. Music apps! High-end games! Art apps! It just shrugged off my pitiful attempts to introduce lag. &ldquo; Is that all you&rsquo;ve got,&rdquo; it seemed to growl, although that might have been something I heard after one too many sessions of <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/death-ray-manta-drm/id592858193" target="_blank">Death Ray Manta</a>.</p> <p>A swift look at specs explains all. My old 4s was wheezing along with 512 MB of RAM and an 800 MHz A5 chip; the 5s boasts twice the RAM and a super-powered 1.3 GHz A7, presumably composed entirely of ground unicorn.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s an argument today&rsquo;s Apple concentrates too much on specs, notably at press events (to the point you want to hurl a Mac mini at an overly chatty exec&rsquo;s head, just to shut him up). Over time, the iPhone point and shot &mdash; lots of photos and all of the cameras. On Flickr, it rose to the number-one spot and never relinquished it, evolving technology combining with a bewilderingly large app ecosystem to make even the most ardent Lomography advocate consider going digital.</p> <p>I realise now that my photo-taking antics had slowed with the iPhone 4s. It&rsquo;s not much cop waiting seconds for everything to warm up when life around you moves so quickly. But the iPhone 5s has nailed it, retaining the satisfying volume press to activate the shutter, but ramping up other aspects of the hardware and software.</p> <p>One big change is the weird pink fringe effect I found when using the iPhone 5 demo unit&rsquo;s flash &mdash; this appears to have been banished. The new flash has two LEDs &mdash; one each of white and amber &mdash; and software figures out a scene&rsquo;s colour temperature, determining the intensity and colour of the flash it should use. The result isn&rsquo;t always perfect, but I do more often get photos that don&rsquo;t need colour-correction.</p> <p>Then there are new toys in the form of Burst Mode (ten frames per second) and 120fps slow-motion video, previously the domain of third-party apps, and noticeable improvements to image stabilisation and speed, especially when shooting panoramas. Spec-wise, the iPhone remains nothing special on paper (although the front-facing camera is now HD, thereby excitingly showing extra wrinkles in perfect detail when using FaceTime), but the combination of hardware and software has got me taking loads of photos again, much to my Schnauzer&rsquo;s chagrin. They cunningly ignored contrary arguments, as did I &mdash; until I had my iPhone 5s for a couple of days.</p> <p>The moment it clicked was when I without thinking just plugged in the charging cable. I&rsquo;d not looked to see which way round it was, because I didn&rsquo;t need to. Instead of unlocking the phone by tapping in a four-digit PIN, like some kind of caveman, casually holding a finger or thumb on the Home button for a second does the trick.</p> <p>The same&rsquo;s largely true for app purchases. It didn&rsquo;t really work.</p> <p>The Nexus 4 is a perfectly fine device, and Android does some things I wish Apple would steal, &lsquo;like an artist&rsquo; (not least the alphabetical list of on-device apps, and being able to install new apps from the web), but the experience in general just felt a bit cheap, from the plasticky and overly large device itself through to the Android operating system. Also, putting the headphone port at the bottom of the device was just plain wrong, and if you disagree, you are also just plain wrong.</p> <p>Furthermore, there&rsquo;s the reality that part of the value of any item you own is in the investment. Do I like the iPhone 5s more than the 5 I had hanging around because it&rsquo;s mine, and because I paid for it? Is part of my rekindled fondness for the iPhone line rationalisation?</p> <p>Undoubtedly, but I&rsquo;m far from alone in that, and _objectively_ the iPhone 5s after a couple of months remains the best iPhone &mdash; and best smartphone &mdash; I&rsquo;ve used.
