Existing apps zoom to fill these extra pixels, making use of iOS 8&rsquo;s scaling capabilities, but developers are looking forward to reworking their apps to fully take advantage of the extra space.</p> <p><a href="http://www.goodiware.com">Good.iWare</a> CEO Yuri Selukoff says &ldquo;the larger the screen, the better it is for reading&rdquo;, and hopes people with new Apple devices will &ldquo;spend more time reading and annotating documents, which means more possibilities for apps like GoodReader&rdquo;. Mike Ferenduros, creator of iPad comic reader <a href="http://chunkyreader.com">Chunky</a>, says the new devices are &ldquo;enough to push me into finally making my app universal, simply because bigger screens turn the new iPhones into better comic readers&rdquo;. Elsewhere, <a href="http://splashdata.com">SplashData</a> CEO Morgan Slain sees a new lease of life for the many productivity apps that use list-based interfaces: &ldquo;Extra pixels help you deliver more user records at once, saving people time and effort in scrolling and searching.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 Plus review</a></strong></p> <p>According to developer <a href="http://splendid-things.co.uk">Benjohn Barnes</a>, people with multiple iOS devices will start to see &ldquo;smoother transitions from &lsquo;phone&rsquo; to &lsquo;tablet&rsquo;&rdquo;, when it comes to apps. Developer frameworks now define the similarities between devices, instead of considering them entirely separate units. This is already apparent with the iPhone 6 Plus, which in landscape boasts a two-column display in Apple&rsquo;s apps - something third-parties are sure to mimic.</p> <p>From a developer standpoint, this means more work, which could potentially impact on app updates and pricing. However, developer <a href="http://www.lukeredpath.co.uk">Luke Redpath</a> called this a &ldquo;wake-up call&rdquo;, arguing developers should be using resolution-independent graphics and auto-layout capabilities as the number of available devices proliferates. <a href="http://www.pcalc.com">PCalc</a> creator James Thomson adds that although Apple omitted talking about the specifics of its new devices at WWDC 2014 in June, it was possible to read between the lines regarding imminent larger iPhones &ldquo;and possibly bigger iPads with a split-screen option&rdquo;.</p> <p>The message, he says, was &ldquo;don&rsquo;t assume screen sizes are fixed any more&rdquo;. While demanding a shift in approach and extra work for developers in the short term, embracing Apple&rsquo;s new thinking will, argues Thomson, &ldquo;make apps more flexible&rdquo;; he reckons if Apple came out with a 7in iPhone tomorrow, his PCalc app would already adapt with no extra work.</p> <p>Panic&rsquo;s <a href="http://mrgan.tumblr.com">Neven Mrgan</a> also enthuses about the manner in which Apple has provided guidance and tools, but complains that the rest of a developer&rsquo;s toolkit is lagging: &ldquo;Design apps need to start helping out by natively supporting concepts such as adaptive UI or even multiple canvas sizes that reuse basic elements. Little pieces of functionality are trickling in, but we still have to do a lot of manual hacking to design for all the different iOS devices.&rdquo;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" title="display" alt="display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/display_0.jpg?1411983023" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Playing the game </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Mrgan notes he&rsquo;s spent 15 years sweating over pixel precision, following the idea that a good designer must arrange everything just so. But techniques need revising now the iPhone&rsquo;s moving towards extremely high-resolution screens, flexible viewport sizes and scaled graphics. Games creator <a href="http://pixelsontoast.com">Kevin Ng</a> wonders how developers of retro-style pixellated games like Wayward Souls will now fare, since they relied on whole-number scaling to blow imagery up in a manner that always remained sharp. &ldquo;Their choice is now whether to allow fuzzy edges or crop the game world on certain devices, which could give unfair advantages to some players in multiplayer,&rdquo; he says.</p> <p>Elsewhere, though, developers see few problems regarding bringing games to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Ng notes the screens are still 16:9, like the one on the iPhone 5 and 5s, meaning interfaces can remain largely the same, bar minor adjustments for &lsquo;thumb reach&rsquo; and textures. He also dismisses any notion iOS has turned into something like Android for games creation, and even suggests Android has <em>benefitted</em> iOS developers: &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve had to deal with Android&rsquo;s many resolutions for years, which has forced games designers to start thinking in a resolution-agnostic manner. Because of this, many games should work fine out of the box with the new iPhones.&rdquo; Games developer <a href="http://www.aeiowu.com">Greg Wohlwend</a> adds that this also works in reverse: &ldquo;If you make a game and it does well, you&rsquo;ll want it to work on everything. So starting with a more flexible output in mind will help minimise headaches when porting to new systems.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-8/review" target="_blank">iOS 8 review</a></strong></p> <p><a href="http://www.revolution60.com">Giant Spacekat</a> head of development Brianna Wu is also extremely positive about the potential for games on the new iPhones. She similarly dismisses Android comparisons &mdash; &ldquo;The problem there isn&rsquo;t so much screen sizes as dealing with all the different hardware&rdquo; &mdash;&nbsp;and reckons games are &ldquo;simply more fun to play on a bigger screen&rdquo;. She wonders whether larger iPhones could impact on Vita sales, and notes that Apple&rsquo;s Metal technology could be transformative to mobile gaming.</p> <p>&ldquo;Metal&rsquo;s going to let gaming on your iPad and iPhone look closer to games on a console. Those things that really make you go &quot;WOW!&quot; when you play a PS4 game is what Metal lets devs do better than ever before, solving limitations regarding particle effects and transparency,&rdquo; she explains. &ldquo;My belief is because of Metal you&rsquo;re going to see way more games on consoles ported specifically to iOS, because they&rsquo;ll simply run better now.&rdquo; Wu notes that Metal is also something that could impact on Android, because the sheer fragmentation of hardware and software makes a similar system on that platform practically impossible to implement.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="416" title="gaming" alt="gaming" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/gaming_0.jpg?1411983023" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Building extensions </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Beyond the screen, it&rsquo;s iOS&rsquo;s newfound extensibility that has developers excited. Previously, every app was a silo, but that&rsquo;s about to change. &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not a hyperbolic person, but iOS 8 app extensions could be the biggest thing to happen to third-party iOS apps,&rdquo; believes David Chartier of <a href="https://agilebits.com">AgileBits</a>.</p> <p>Whereas before it was hard to get iOS apps to work together and exchange information, Chartier says iOS 8 &ldquo;blows that all wide open&rdquo;. This will lead to new classes of apps, and also make existing apps and services more powerful. You&rsquo;ll be able to clip anything from Safari to Pinterest, collect content into Evernote, have 1Password fill passwords, and more. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s about faster workflows and ultimately providing more power to end users,&rdquo; says Oliver Waters of <a href="http://d3i.com">d3i</a>.</p> <p>By way of example, games developer <a href="http://www.boson-x.com">Ian McLarty</a> says he uses his iPad for music composition, and will no longer have to use extra apps to read data and then transfer it to Dropbox. And Iconfactory&rsquo;s <a href="http://gedblog.com">Gedeon Maheux</a> notes how developers can add value to existing offerings, such as PCalc&rsquo;s Today View extension that optionally resides in Notification Center: &ldquo;People love it because you get instant access to a calculator right from the lock screen. There are so many possibilities and opportunities here.&rdquo;</p> <p>Elsewhere, Touch ID is now available for third-party apps (&ldquo;A big win for anyone who wants an extra layer of security,&rdquo; according to <a href="http://metaclassy.com">Metaclassy</a>&rsquo;s Jorge Pedroso), and Handoff will enable the seamless transition of in-progress content between devices. Wu wonders whether Steve Jobs&rsquo;s Apple would ever have allowed such things, and reasons this renewed Apple is &ldquo;getting better&rdquo;.</p> <p>There are some notes of caution, however. Chartier says developers must be careful to alert users about integration features, because although they&rsquo;re installed with app updates, they are not enabled by default. Mrgan hopes a &ldquo;market of apps aiming to replace system services won&rsquo;t devolve into a contest of cleverness and giddiness, like we&rsquo;ve seen in the past, and will instead compete on feature quality and robustness&rdquo;. Redpath, though, is convinced things will go well: &ldquo;Extensions have the potential to really change how we all use iOS, and I get the impression Apple intends to develop new &lsquo;extension points&rsquo; in the future. But for now, being able to share data between apps without having to switch apps is a killer feature.&rdquo;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1324" height="993" title="extensions" alt="extensions" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/extensions.png?1411983023" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Watch this space </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Of course, Apple&rsquo;s recent event wasn&rsquo;t only about the iPhone &mdash; Apple Watch was unveiled, which the company says developers will be able to create apps for. Barnes warns that the &lsquo;watch&rsquo; part of the device&rsquo;s name is essentially a misnomer: &ldquo;I&rsquo;m not sure thinking of it as a watch will be any more useful than thinking of the iPhone as a phone. It&rsquo;s really a computer you can carry around even more easily.&rdquo;</p> <p>As for the apps, Chartier notes it&rsquo;s a &ldquo;totally new platform, which will require new thinking for new use-cases&rdquo;. It eschews multitouch and has a tiny screen, which will prove challenging to app and game creators. Chartier reasons those who &ldquo;truly think outside the box will be most successful,&rdquo; while Maheux is excited by the interface: &ldquo;Already, everything&rsquo;s starting to gel and vibe&nbsp;&mdash; the animations are fluid and make sense, and the design is clean and purposeful. I can&rsquo;t wait for something like the Apple Watch&rsquo;s Home screen to come to the iPhone&hellip;&rdquo;</p> <p>In terms of what we&rsquo;ll see, it&rsquo;s all speculation for now. Stephen Dodd of <a href="http://www.officetime.net">Office Time</a> reckons it&rsquo;ll be perfect for tracking your life, including for business uses, such as timing billables by client. Waters sees loads of potential in health and personally connected apps, with the Apple Watch sensors and &lsquo;taptic&rsquo; engine collecting and feeding back data to users in new ways. And Morgan is looking forward to non-obvious applications: &ldquo;Notifications, exercise apps and remotes seem obvious enough, but what about games, creation tools and companion accessories? Three years from now, millions will use a hip new Apple Watch service we can&rsquo;t even imagine today.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iwatch/review" target="_blank">Apple Watch hands-on</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="600" title="watch" alt="watch" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-watch_0.png?1411983023" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Tight squeeze </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As ever, there was some disappointment following Apple&rsquo;s September event. Mobile app developer <a href="http://www.squidee.com">Luke Durrant</a> wasn&rsquo;t thrilled at Apple keeping 16 GB devices in the line-up (and, worse, the 8 GB iPhone 5c), and said this means developers will have to take extra care to keep app builds small so they don&rsquo;t take up too much space: &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve seen people with such devices who can&rsquo;t even update to iOS 8, because they have 6 GB of photos and just a few apps&rdquo;. With larger screens, the demand for bigger assets only amplifies this problem.</p> <p>Pedroso also says it&rsquo;s getting increasingly hard for independent developers to keep pace: &ldquo;For the last couple of years, we&rsquo;ve been spending months just playing catch-up with updates to iOS, OS X and devices. And this year, Apple&rsquo;s released even more stuff.&rdquo; He adds he doesn&rsquo;t want to sound too negative &mdash; Apple&rsquo;s updates are good for business &mdash; but such stressful periods can with smaller developers propel apps into a kind of maintenance mode rather than their creators working on planned new features. There&rsquo;s also a question of stability, with betas, developer tools and even the final shipping operating systems coming under fire.</p> <p>Developers have also been criticised due to many early iOS 8 updates not being properly optimised for iOS 8. Many apps simply zoom the interface and fix a few bugs, and some games don&rsquo;t work at all on the iPhone 6 Plus. Durrant appeals to users to allow developers a little time. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s going to take a while for developers to take full advantage of the new APIs and capabilities, and the full power of everything Apple&rsquo;s released won&rsquo;t come until later,&rdquo; he says. &ldquo;But I think we are already on the next chapter in the iOS app ecosystem.&rdquo;</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">Apple iPhone 6 review</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="800" height="390" title="storage" alt="storage" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/storage.jpg?1411983023" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/app-makers-iphone-6-ios-8-and-apple-watch/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/app-makers-iphone-6-ios-8-and-apple-watch/feature#comments Apple Apps and Games iOS 8 iOS apps iPhone 6 iPhone 6 Plus Watch Thu, 25 Sep 2014 16:29:47 +0000 Craig Grannell 1448372 at http://www.stuff.tv Fully Charged: Apple hurrying iOS 8.0.2 out soon, Gear VR launch experiences are free, and new Call of Duty co-op mode revealed http://www.stuff.tv/apple/fully-charged-apple-hurrying-ios-802-out-soon-gear-vr-launch-experiences-free-and-new-call-dut <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Load up on all of the tech news you need to start your day </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS 8" alt="iOS 8" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/apple-ios8-closeup.jpg?1411693324" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/andrew-hayward" title="View user profile.">Andrew Hayward</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8.0.2 out within next few days </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Yesterday&rsquo;s release of iOS 8.0.1 proved disastrous for Apple, as the first update to last week&rsquo;s new version upgrade wound up killing cellular service and Touch ID functionality for some <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review">iPhone 6</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">iPhone 6 Plus</a> users. It works with any microwave</h2> <p>You know full well if Apple was to introduce an exciting new method of charging, it would come with an exciting new charging accessory, with an exciting new price tag. You&rsquo;d be buying your Apple Hob for 50 quid, not flinging your iPhone into your microwave, next to the remains of yesterday&rsquo;s baked beans.</p> <h2>2. It wasn&#39;t unveiled at the Apple Event</h2> <p>In the unlikely scenario everyone in Cupertino got <em>really</em> drunk and actually did invent Apple Wave, it would have got at least a mention at the &nbsp;keynote. Tim Cook might have lifted a black cloth off of a microwave with a flourish, and showed the new iPhone 6 being charged in mere seconds. And then an underling could have made popcorn for everyone.</p> <h2>3. Apple&rsquo;s website doesn&rsquo;t mention it</h2> <p>Just a small point, but if you nip over to Apple&#39;s site, you&rsquo;ll discover that Apple Wave doesn&rsquo;t get a mention on the home page, iPhone page, iOS 8 page, or any other page. That&rsquo;s probably a good indication that Apple Wave isn&rsquo;t actually a real thing.</p> <h2>4. The advert does&rsquo;t look very Apple</h2> <p>The advert that&rsquo;s circulating looks like it was hacked together by someone without a great deal of understanding of how to make something Apple-like in terms of design, presumably on the basis that&rsquo;s exactly what it is. If something doesn&rsquo;t look like it was made by Apple, chances are it wasn&rsquo;t.</p> <h2>5. IT&rsquo;S ABOUT MICROWAVING YOUR PHONE</h2> <p>OK, so this is the big one. Wave is about microwaving your phone, which involves putting your phone into a microwave and <em>microwaving it</em>. Now, when we were kids, we were sternly warned not to even put a metal fork into the microwave by mistake, in case the entire house exploded, so at what point does someone think &ldquo;Hey, I think I&rsquo;ll just pop my extremely expensive new iPhone in there for a few minutes&rdquo; and reason that will be OK?</p> <p>On the plus side, we&rsquo;re pretty sure most of the images of fried iPhones on Twitter are faked, because the alternative is too horrible to contemplate.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-doomed-company-goes-days-without-launching-new-product-line/feature" target="_blank">Apple doomed as company goes for days without launching a new product line</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/top-5-ways-tell-apple-wave-iphone-6-microwave-charging-fake/feature#comments Apple iPhone 6 Smartphones Fri, 19 Sep 2014 15:51:25 +0000 Craig Grannell 1448080 at http://www.stuff.tv Ultimate setup: Apple iPhone 6 http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ultimate-setup-apple-iphone-6/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> We’ve unearthed the best add-ons, accessories and kit for your brand new iPhone </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Ultimate setup: Apple iPhone 6 " alt="Ultimate setup: Apple iPhone 6 " src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/iphone-6-screen.jpg?1411459619" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Picked up an iPhone 6? Whether or not that translates into a live-action setting, especially with a rather short timeframe between now and the release, remains to be seen.</p> <p>Additionally, next year&rsquo;s <em>Fantastic Four</em> reboot has been pushed back a couple of months to 7 August, while the <em>Assassin&rsquo;s Creed</em> film - which was supposed to fill that late summer slot - has been pulled off of the schedule entirely. The Journal&rsquo;s source says that 400,000 iPhone 6 handsets and 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus devices are being made each day.</p> <p>Part of the problem is that the 5.5in display of the iPhone 6 Plus isn&rsquo;t yet being reliably produced, with the facility scrapping nearly half of the components made due to defects. Google was reportedly planning to replace that line with Android Silver, a brand for high-end pure Android smartphones, but that may not be the plan anymore.</p> <p>According to a report from The Information, the Android Silver program is &ldquo;on hold&rdquo; and some Google employees don&rsquo;t think it had a particularly rosy future anyway. The summer departure of executive Nikesh Arora from Google is pegged as one reason than plans have changed, but Google&#39;s partners were also reportedly not so keen on the idea.</p> <p>Flagship phones still rule Android fans&rsquo; attention spans, but as great Android handsets become startlingly inexpensive, perhaps it&rsquo;s too much to think that a high-end device can command an exorbitant price above even what top-tier phones cost today. And different is what we got.</p> <p>Obviously the increased screen size is the main change, but it&#39;s far from the only visual difference. Like the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review">HTC One (M8)</a>, the iPhone 6 has all-metal back with curved edges front and back rather than the flat, 90-degree edges on the 5s. The result is a phone that&rsquo;s super-smooth in the hand with the joins between glossy screen and matte back almost unnoticable as you hold it.</p> <p>And you&rsquo;ll want to hold it &ndash; it feels amazing.</p> <p>The curves make it superbly comfortable in use despite its increased size, while its thin profile also helps; it&rsquo;s just 6.9mm thick, so substantially skinnier than the 7.5mm 5s.&nbsp;</p> <p>On the downside, the camera lens does now protrude from the phone&rsquo;s case, which may not please everyone, while&nbsp;the distinctive light-coloured lines on the back at top and bottom won&#39;t be to all tastes either. The latter, at least, are present for practical as well as aesthetic reasons: with a metal-backed phone it&rsquo;s hard to scoot the signal in and out, and the flush rubberised lines sort this. Certainly call quality on the iPhone 6 is strong and reliable.&nbsp;</p> <p>Overall, it&#39;s a beautifully built bit of kit. Where the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/galaxy-s5/samsung-galaxy-s5/review">Samsung Galaxy S5</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/g3/lg-g3/review">LG G3</a>&nbsp;have to make do with plastic shells - albeit metal-style plastic in the case of the latter - the iPhone 6 feels wholly premium. Only the M8 really runs it close, and that&#39;s a far bigger handset. Every iPhone since the 4 has been a thing of beauty, and the 6 is no exception.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-htc-one-m8-weigh/feature">iPhone 6 vs HTC One (M8) - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-1.jpg?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-2.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-3"> <div class="field-label">Image #3:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_3" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-3.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-4"> <div class="field-label">Image #4:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_4" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-design-4.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A screen dream? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6&#39;s headline feature is its 4.7in display. And with good reason: Apple had only ever upped its screen size once before, and that from 3.5in to 4in. But let&#39;s not get carried away here - by anyone else&#39;s standards, 4.7in is not a huge screen. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact - note the word &#39;Compact&#39; - is only a smidgeon smaller at 4.6in. Compared to the Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z3, the iPhone remains a pixie in a land of Android ogres.</p> <p>For many people, 4.7in will be the ideal size: big enough to offer a better viewing and gaming experience, without being so big that you can&#39;t use it properly. Of course none of that matters if the quality isn&#39;t there too.</p> <p>Fortunately, it is.&nbsp;</p> <p>The iPhone 6 is no match in screen resolution terms when compared to the G3 (534 pixels per inch) and Galaxy S5 (432ppi). Apple&rsquo;s screen has just 326ppi, the same as the iPhone 5s. But stats aren&rsquo;t the whole story and one glance at the iPhone 6 confirms this.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy S5 has arguably the best screen on the market: rich, vibrant and unbelievably detailed, although the LG G3 runs it very close thanks to the extra pixels on its 2K display. And the iPhone 6 deserves to sit in that exalted company.</p> <p>It&rsquo;s lower-resolution than its rivals, but more than dense enough to look glorious. It also lacks the occasionally over-saturated look of the S5; the Samsung display, though unequivocally beautiful, can still tend to the garish. As far as the LG goes, those extra pixels only really make themselves known when you&rsquo;re reading the tiniest of writing.&nbsp;</p> <p>However we&#39;d be lying if we said that we hadn&#39;t hoped for more. The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">6 Plus</a>&nbsp;has a full HD 1080p screen, as does almost every one of the iPhone 6&#39;s main rivals. While the 6&#39;s display is easily one of the best 720p efforts we&#39;ve used, the differences between it and a full HD screen are visible if you look for them.</p> <p>However, for day-to-day use, there&rsquo;s a limit to what you can see - or at least to what matters. And in those terms, the iPhone 6 is as good as its keenest rivals. Plus, it&rsquo;s just right there: the display seems so pressed up against the glass it&rsquo;s like you&rsquo;re making direct contact with the pixels.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/why-i-m-dreading-bigger-iphone-6/feature">Why I&#39;m dreading the bigger iPhone 6</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-screen-1.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera tweaks </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>As the millions of sepia-toned hipster-food-photos posted hourly to Instagram prove, the camera is one of the most important things on any phone.&nbsp;So you might have expected Apple to want to match the 16MP sensor of the Galaxy S5 or the 20.7MP on Sony&rsquo;s Xperia&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/sony/sony-xperia-z2/review">Z2</a>&nbsp;and Z3. But no, it&rsquo;s stuck with eight megapixels. Eight.</p> <p>Fortunately for Apple, the combination of a good lens, advanced image processing and sublimely simple camera controls in previous iPhones has served it very well. Plus, there&#39;s more to a good camera than lots of pixels - after all, the HTC One (M8) takes great shots with a mere 4MP sensor.</p> <p>Part of the M8&#39;s success is that although it uses fewer pixels, they&#39;re individually bigger than those on most rivals at around 2 microns.&nbsp;The iPhone can&rsquo;t match that, but at 1.5 microns, the Apple pixels are bigger than those on the Samsung Galaxy S5 (1.12 microns).</p> <p>Anyway, that&#39;s the specs out of the way, let&#39;s get back to the real world...</p> <p>Innovations this time around include Focus Pixels. These are called phase detection pixels by other manufacturers and a couple of rival handsets share this feature, notably the Galaxy S5. Phase detection is faster than the more commonly used contrast detection and means nippier autofocus - which in turn should mean snappier snaps with greater sharpness.&nbsp;Last year&rsquo;s iPhone 5s took pictures with no discernible delay anyway, but the iPhone 6 sure is fast. Quality-wise, there&#39;s not a huge amount of difference from the 5s - which means it&#39;s still one of the best out there.</p> <p>Where Apple&rsquo;s camera is consistently better than rivals is in its superbly simple ease of use. No white balance to adjust, no extra granular controls to fiddle with. Now, though, you can deliberately over- or under-expose shots. But don&#39;t fret that this&#39;ll be an unwelcome distraction from the point-and- shoot ethos. In fact, it&rsquo;s wholly intuitive: press on the screen until the yellow exposure box appears. Next to it is a little sun icon with a line through it. As you draw your finger up and down it shows you how dark or light the final pic will be. Easy as pie.</p> <p>Video recording is also improved,&nbsp;with HD filming at 60 frames per second and enhanced slo-mo (now double the frame rate of 240 per second). But there&rsquo;s no 4K video as found on some rivals. Apple&rsquo;s skill has rarely been to be first, so we&#39;re not exactly surprised as its absence. Still, it would have been a nice thing to have. Quality-wise, footage is smooth and looks striking.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-6-vs-samsung-galaxy-s5-weigh/news">iPhone 6 vs Samsung Galaxy S5 - the weigh-in</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-1.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-camera-2.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iPhone 6 tech specs </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><strong>Screen:</strong> 4.7in 720x1334 IPS LCD (326ppi)</p> <p><strong>Processor:</strong> 1.4GHz Apple A8 processor</p> <p><strong>RAM:</strong> (unspecified)</p> <p><strong>OS:</strong> iOS 8</p> <p><strong>Storage:</strong> 16/64/128GB</p> <p><strong>Battery:</strong> (unspecified)</p> <p><strong>Camera:</strong> 8MP 1080p@60fps, 720p@240fps rear, 1.2MP 720p front</p> <p><strong>Connectivity:</strong> Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC (Apple Pay only), 3G/4G</p> <p><strong>Dimensions:</strong> 138x67x6.9mm</p> <p><strong>Weight:</strong> 129g</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Performance is always a tricky thing to judge on iPhones. Look at the stats alone and most high-end Androids leave it in the dust. But use one, and it&#39;ll often feel like the fastest thing since Usain Bolt&#39;s sliced bread. The iPhone 6 is no different.</p> <p>The new iPhone has an improved processor, namely the A8, and whizzes through tasks without the slightest of pauses.&nbsp;The previous A7 was shockingly fast thanks in part to the new 64-bit architecture that arrived on that chip, and that&#39;s obviously retained here. And while the new model doesn&rsquo;t&nbsp;<em>feel</em>&nbsp;any faster, it has more pixels to move around and is&nbsp;probably doing more in the background to boot.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>There&rsquo;s also a new motion co-processor, the M8, not to be confused with HTC&rsquo;s flagship. The co-processor now measures altitude thanks to a built-in barometer, so it can monitor when you are climbing or descending stairs. Demonstrations we saw last week in Cupertino were certainly seamless and speedy, so assuming Apple is able to do the deals with UK banks and credit card companies that it&rsquo;s done in the States, this could be a very big deal.</p> <p>Of course, Android phones have had similar features for some time. EE customers have the Cash On Tap app on various phones, including the S5, which turns the phone into a virtual Oyster card, for instance. But NFC hasn&rsquo;t really taken off yet. Apple Pay could change this.</p> <p>Other phones have fingerprint sensors, too, but the Apple model is superb not least because it&rsquo;s effort-free. By resting your thumb or finger on the home button as you would to wake the phone, the Touch ID feature is invoked. The Samsung Galaxy S5 by contrast requires a swiping movement to make it work - definitely a little less intuitive.</p> <p>Similarly, there&#39;s VoLTE - that&rsquo;s Voice over LTE - which promises to deliver voice calls through 4G data; handy if your 2G signal is weak at home, say. It needs both handsets to be on VoLTE and for networks to play ball. EE is involved but the service hasn&rsquo;t been rolled out yet. The feature is partly made possible by a faster LTE chip which can deliver up to 150Mbps downloads, when the networks can match this.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/what-apple-watch-can-tell-us-about-iphone-7-and-ipad-air-3/feature">What Apple Watch can tell us about iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-2.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 8 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 6 arrives running Apple&#39;s new iOS 8, available from today on all iPhones from the 4s onwards in addition to various iPads and iPod touch models.</p> <p>It looks mostly like last year&rsquo;s radically restyled iOS 7, but if 7 was all about design changes, 8 is all about openness, customisation and communication.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are immediate benefits to apps such as Messages, which will now let you easily send voice files, photos and videos at the touch of a button in the text area. And below that you&#39;ll find the all-new predictive keyboard, which aims to guess which word you&rsquo;re about to type before you&rsquo;ve keyed in the first letter. This is splendid and works well. Third-party companies such as the excellent Swiftkey are also now able to produce their own keyboards for the iPhone &ndash; something Apple hadn&rsquo;t permitted until now.</p> <p>Bigger improvements still include Handoff, which enables you to start tapping an email out on your iPhone keyboard and then carry it on seamlessly on a Mac using the latest Yosemite software. This also means that when a phone call comes in you can answer it on your Mac or on another Apple device &ndash; handy if your phone is snuggling on the windowsill where the mobile phone signal is strongest while you&rsquo;re ensconced next to the TV in the other room. We weren&#39;t able to test these features, as Yosemite is still in beta release mode, but we&#39;ll update this review as soon as we&#39;re able.</p> <p>Most importantly of all, there&rsquo;s the new Health app, which allows other apps to contribute to the fitness monitoring that Health collates. This is another feature that&rsquo;s in its early stages and it&rsquo;s going to be interesting to see what happens if you have multiple fitness devices which report different step counts, for example. Apple stresses that each app only takes part if you give it permission.</p> <p>Still, the basic app looks pretty neat, with the restrained, classy styling you&rsquo;d expect, though Samsung&#39;s S Health app looks spiffy, too and both are outclassed by the LifeLog software on Sony&rsquo;s phones.</p> <p>And finally there&rsquo;s iCloud Drive, which brings Apple up to date with the document-sharing capabilities other platforms already boast. Just as with iCloud, which syncs your contacts, calendars and more across multiple devices, iCloud Drive saves documents across all of your Apple gadgets and on icloud.com.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/how-back-your-iphone-and-ipad-you-install-ios-8/feature">How to back up your iPhone and iPad before installing iOS 8</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-1.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="820" height="1150" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-iOS-8-3-portrait.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Verdict </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>In order to really judge the iPhone 6 you first have to consider what it&#39;s not.</p> <p>It&#39;s not a mega-screened wannabe phablet. It&#39;s not a 2K-display-packing pixel king. It&#39;s not the most powerful phone ever, it&#39;s not the most megapixelly phone ever, it&#39;s not even the longest-lastingest phone ever. The best Androids still beat it on all these counts.</p> <p>But that&#39;s just specs. What it is, is the best iPhone ever.</p> <p>It&#39;s a real looker, with an amazingly slim and deeply attractive build. It feels lovely in the hand, despite the extra size. It has the best screen of any iPhone - big enough to be useful, with gorgeous colours. It&#39;s the most powerful iPhone ever, even if in use all you&#39;ll know is that it feels very fast. It has the best battery of any iPhone ever, lasting well into a second day. And it also packs some of Apple&#39;s biggest software innovations in years, although we&#39;ll have to wait for the likes of Apple Pay to make their way over here.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s, for all its qualities, didn&#39;t do enough to put Apple back on top. It just lagged too far behind its Android rivals in key areas.&nbsp;</p> <p>But the iPhone 6, with its combination of fresh new form factor, the upcoming links to desktop via Yosemite and the promise of Apple Pay, might just do the trick.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review">Apple iPhone 6 Plus review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="2400" height="1800" title="Apple iPhone 6 review" alt="Apple iPhone 6 review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iPhone-6-review-verdict-1.png?1411564436" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-review-rating"><legend>Review Rating</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> build </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 10 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> apps </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-review-type"> <div class="field-label">Type:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-review-score"> <div class="field-label">Score:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> 9 </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-verdict"> <div class="field-label">Verdict:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>With its bigger screen and software overhaul, the iPhone 6 is the freshest feeling iPhone in years</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-preview"> <div class="field-label">Preview:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Disabled </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-carousel-item"><legend>Carousel Extras</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-carousel-item-title"> <div class="field-label">Carousel item title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Apple iPhone 6 review: &quot;The freshest feeling iPhone in years&quot;
