While the HTC One (M8) is arguably better put together than the iPhone 5s, the Samsung Galaxy S5 is a plastic phone with a removeable back. True, it&rsquo;s the best-made plastic phone with a removeable back that Samsung&rsquo;s engineers have produced to date, but it&rsquo;s still a long way behind the 5s (and most other flagship smartphones) when it comes to solidity. Crank up the volume on the S5&rsquo;s speakers, for instance, and the casing will begin to vibrate.</p> <p dir="ltr">All that jazz about the S5 being waterproof? Well, it&#39;s true that you don&rsquo;t have to worry about sending the S5 into a watery grave when you&rsquo;re at the beach. But when you&rsquo;re about to charge the Android smartphone via its microUSB cable? The cover that protects the microUSB port from water will be a real pain to remove. Every. Single. Time.</p> <p dir="ltr">And while we&#39;re talking ergonomics, don&rsquo;t forget: the iPhone 5s&rsquo; Lightning connector plugs in both ways. But on the looks front alone, it&#39;s clear to anyone with a set of functioning eyes and a sense of taste that the iPhone is a better prospect. In good light, the S5 delivers amazing shots time and time again with little need for fiddling or adjusting settings. The iPhone is a better performer in the gloom, but overall we think the S5&#39;s outdoor detail and punch &ndash; not to mention its abilities with 4K video capture &ndash; give it a slight edge here.</p> <p><strong>Winner</strong>: Samsung Galaxy S5</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S5%2003.JPG?1397657734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="567" height="425" title="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" alt="Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Apple iPhone 5s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Apple%20iPhone%205s%2002.JPG?1397657734" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Performance </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p dir="ltr">The Galaxy S5 sports Qualcomm&rsquo;s latest 2.5GHz quad-core Krait processor &ndash; a Snapdragon 801, to be precise &ndash; and marries it to 2GB of RAM for impressive all-round performance. Having chucked all manner of apps and games at it, we&#39;ve found it performs near-flawlessly with everything. There&#39;s the occasional stutter when navigating Samsung&#39;s own UI, but nothing we&#39;d call problematic.</p> <p dir="ltr">Apple, meanwhile, touts the virtues of the 64-bit A7 processor in the iPhone 5s. But do you really <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/whats-all-fuss-about-64-bit-smartphones-iphone-5s-and-samsung-galaxy-s5-anyway/feature" target="_blank">need a 64-bit processor</a>? In the long run, yes. But right now, the main purpose of Apple&#39;s 64-bit processor is to power the iPhone&#39;s Touch ID fingerprint sensor.&nbsp;Even without a 64-bit processor, having four cores running at 2.5GHz on the S5 is going to make the iPhone 5s&rsquo; dual-core A7 look like a chump.</p> <p dir="ltr">Theoretically, anyway: it&#39;s difficult to compare two phones that run different operating systems, but we can&#39;t say that the (dual-core, sub-1GB of RAM) 5s performs noticeably poorer than the Samsung S5. The S5 has none of the limitations that the iPhone 5s imposes on its users. You can freely transfer files between the S5 and your desktop or laptop. It has loads of apps on the Google Play Store, and at times, exclusive apps only available on Samsung devices. Everything that&rsquo;s great about the Android interface gets bumped up with more customised features to give you easier access.</p> <p dir="ltr">But it can get overwhelming. Samsung has traditionally packed its phones with bloatware that complicates the user experience. Its calendar app, for example, is a far cry from the simple UI on the stock Android interface. Samsung&#39;s customised apps, meant to integrate the features of the phone, add too much to the table (that said, we&#39;ve found TouchWiz on the S5 to be its best iteration yet, and Samsung has streamlined things to a welcome degree &ndash; it&#39;s still not as clean as stock Android or iOS, but it&#39;s getting there).</p> <p dir="ltr">On the other hand, for iDevices, even when it comes to wireless file transfers, you&rsquo;ll need to use AirDrop. (Actually, Apple is no newcomer to the in-car infotainment market anyway and has worked with the automotive industry for more than 10 years developing all those iPod connections we now take for granted.)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1042" height="782" title="Ferrari&#039;s FF: are you drooling too?" alt="Is Apple CarPlay the future of in-car infotainment?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ferrariff.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Hands-on with CarPlay </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>CarPlay is compatible with the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S with an upgrade to iOS 7 (but not the iPod) and connects using a Lightning adapter cable, before being tucked away in the armrest. After that, it&rsquo;s just a matter of doing what you do with the iPhone &ndash; well, almost.&nbsp;</p> <p>Despite the look and feel of CarPlay matching that of the iPhone, there is one crucial difference and that&rsquo;s the number of apps available. Designing in-car systems is all about avoiding driver distraction so what you get in this case is a cut down version of the iPhone with a selection of apps. Whatever you think of Siri as a day-to-day tool, it arguably comes into it&rsquo;s own in this environment because most, if not all, in-car voice control systems are command based rather than being able to cope with natural speech as Siri does.&nbsp;</p> <p>However, in our demonstration by an Apple technician on the Ferrari stand at Geneva, Siri received route instructions to US destinations but was unable to interpret a UK-based postcode or village name using his iPhone. Maps did happily accept the same code when typed in using the touch screen, though, and provided decent route instructions back to the UK. This is an example of how Siri makes use of destination data stored in an individual iPhone to recognise locations. It&#39;s part of what makes CarPlay so smart: it provides the first ever sat-nav whose settings are transparently personalised to each individual user, using all the rich data gathered by your smartphone during day-to-day use.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it&#039;s M25 time." alt="Why Apple CarPlay and its competitors are the future of in-car tech" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/CarPlay_Honda_Music-PRINT.jpg?1397476749" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>When in the CarPlay screen, touching a Ferrari logo takes you back into the Ferrari home screen to interact with the car&rsquo;s settings, so the two are kept quite separate. Ferrari will roll the system out in the new California T in June, but more work needs to be done to introduce CarPlay to some of its other cars, such as the 458, whose screens are in a different format.&nbsp;</p> <p>Although it&rsquo;s starting in pole position, Ferrari won&rsquo;t be the only manufacturer to take CarPlay. Volvo announced it will launch the system in the XC90 next year, Nissan will also be also introducing it to the lineup in 2015 and so will 14 other manufacturers at some stage, including Mercedes. Does CarPlay represent the future of in-car Infotainment systems? Android&#39;s own &#39;Projected Mode&#39; (as leaked in a job posting from Daimler, Mercedes-Benz&#39; parent company) should be capable of aping the CarPlay experience with attached Android devices, and Google Now is already serving up contextually useful data to Android users based on what it know of their calendar, contacts and tastes. Certainly, it&#39;s already more powerful in this regard than Siri. It&#39;s going to be particularly interesting to see how the Google Now experience translates to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/8-things-you-need-know-about-android-wear/feature">Google&#39;s Android Wear smartwatches</a>.</p> <p>This leaves Google in a strong position to take CarPlay on.&nbsp;Indeed, while Ferrari has no specific plans to introduce an Android solution to its cars in the near future, one senior insider says he thinks that will follow once the CarPlay has been fully integrated into the rest of the range. It looks like the battle to provide your in-car infotainment will have little to do with proprietary systems from competing car giants; instead, it&#39;ll be very similar to the one that&#39;s already going on in our pockets.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/geneva-motor-show-2014-12-most-amazing-cars-and-concepts/feature">Geneva Motorshow 2014: the 12 most amazing cars and concepts</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> <p>[Ferrari FF interior image:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.caranddriver.com/news/2012-ferrari-ff-official-photos-and-info-ferrari-ff-news" target="_blank">Car and Driver</a>]</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-carplay-future-car-infotainment/feature#comments Apple Cars iOS iPhone 5 iPhone 5C iPhone 5S Smartphones Sun, 13 Apr 2014 12:13:06 +0000 Esat Dedezade 1435360 at http://www.stuff.tv HTC One (M8) vs iPhone 5s http://www.stuff.tv/apple/htc-one-m8-vs-iphone-5s/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> HTC&#039;s new One is flying the flag for beautifully-designed Android phones – so how does it fare against perennial rival the Apple iPhone 5s? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPhone 5 vs HTC One (M8)" alt="iPhone 5 vs HTC One (M8)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/iphone-5s-vs-htc-one-m8.jpg?1396429055" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>HTC has taken the wraps off its latest smartphone&nbsp;&ndash; the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc/htc-one-2/review" target="_blank">HTC One (M8)</a>.</p> <p>While its name might not exactly roll off the tongue, it&#39;s a gorgeous phone; wrapped up in curvy metal, with an innovative camera and an improved version of HTC&#39;s Sense UI.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/stephen-graves" title="View user profile.">Stephen Graves</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Death to all but metal </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The M8 improves upon its predecessor&#39;s metal-and-plastic design with a gorgeous build that feels like a single piece of metal &ndash; available in brushed steel, silver and gold variants. HTC&#39;s attention to detail can be seen in the&nbsp;gorgeous micro-drilled speakers and brushed-metal finish, though the phone&#39;s&nbsp;chunky bezel is slightly less welcome. Opinion is divided as to whether the M8&#39;s row of on-screen buttons is an improvement over the previous One&#39;s bezel-based buttons, too.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s sticks with Apple&#39;s tried-and-trusted design philosophy, a metal-and-glass build that delivers only incremental changes over the iPhone 5.&nbsp;Apple may have been conservative, but it&#39;s hard to improve on the iPhone&#39;s design, a beautifully-engineered slimline slab of anodised aluminium. The Ultrapixel camera does make for lower-resolution snaps, though, and the promised improvement in low-light performance isn&#39;t really noticeable enough to warrant the trade-off for bigger pixels. But unless you&#39;re planning to print your pics, the M8&#39;s snapper is plenty sufficient for the Instagram food pics and Facebook baby snaps that are the mainstay of most phone cameras. Round the front there&#39;s a 5MP camera, which easily bests the iPhone&#39;s 1.8MP FaceTime camera for selfie snaps.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s sticks with an 8MP sensor for its main camera, &ndash; albeit with some subtle upgrades over its predecessor. Like the HTC One, it features a dual LED flash for more natural flesh tones, and boosted pixel size for improved low-light performance, making for&nbsp;bright, punchy images.. The Camera app, meanwhile, is a &quot;delight&quot;; quick to open, with easily-accessed filters and a simple burst mode.</p> <p>With the latest smartphones packing cameras with up to 41MP sensors and 4K video capability, neither phone is at the cutting edge of camera technology &ndash; so if you&#39;re choosing between the M8 and the 5s, it&#39;s fair to say that the camera isn&#39;t your highest priority.&nbsp; It may not have the raw power of the iPhone&#39;s camera, but the M8&#39;s extra features are genuinely useful on a day-to-day basis, so it wins this round.</p> <p><strong>Winner:</strong> HTC One (M8)</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="HTC One (M8)" alt="HTC One (M8)" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/htc-one-m8-camera.jpg?1396429055" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Apple iPhone 5s" alt="Apple iPhone 5s" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-iphone-5s-camera.jpg?1396429055" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Sense 6 vs iOS 7.1 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone 5s packs Apple&#39;s iOS 7.1, which finally brings the operating system&#39;s visuals in line with Jony Ive&#39;s minimalist hardware design. It&#39;s slick and speedy, with intuitive, useful features. Android fans may complain that the Control Centre, with its handy bank of buttons, is lifted from similar &#39;droid docks, but who&#39;s interested in point scoring? What matters is how it works in day-to-day use, and iOS 7.1 is simple, feature-packed and smooth. The iPhone&#39;s Touch ID fingerprint sensor is typical of Apple&#39;s approach &ndash; it makes unlocking the phone and paying for apps and music that little bit easier.</p> <p>Apple&#39;s App Store continues to lead the field, too &ndash; there&#39;s none of the fragmentation that you get on the Android platform, which means that Apple users can usually expect to get apps and updates first.</p> <p>HTC&#39;s Sense 6 UI is no slouch, though. Built on Android 4.4 KitKat, it&#39;s slick and engaging, with a new tap-to-unlock feature and gesture controls for quick access to the homescreen and BlinkFeed. BlinkFeed itself has been improved, too;&nbsp;the social media and news aggregator is no longer limited to HTC&#39;s official selection of feeds. Plenty of the early bugs have been shown the door too.&nbsp;Cue a collective sigh of relief from panicked app developers.</p> <p>Apple&rsquo;s stuck with the concept of horizontally scrolling pages of tiled icons, so in terms of basic use there&#39;s nothing crazy to get your head around when you approach iOS 7. One of the first things you&rsquo;ll notice is the design tweak when opening and closing apps. Now when you select an app, its &quot;splash screen&quot; emanates from the app icon to fill the screen as the icons around it are pushed aside. It&#39;s such a subtle change that you&#39;ll wonder, &quot;Wasn&#39;t it always that way?&quot;.</p> <p>Similarly, when you close an app with the Home button, the app&#39;s icon zooms back into its place in the grid, and when you unlock your iPhone, the homescreen icons fly into place with a little more panache. It&#39;s not like anyone ever criticised Apple&#39;s transitions, but with ever slicker Android skins and launchers hitting the market, Apple&rsquo;s upped its game to stay a step ahead.</p> <p>And iOS 7 deserves some quality getting-to-know-you time as the attention to detail is beyond anything we&rsquo;ve ever seen on a mobile OS. The animation for downloading apps is a timer wheel revealing more of the icon underneath, almost making you wish iMovie would take longer than 30 seconds to appear. It&rsquo;ll have designers drowning in drool at the very least. And the first time you hit the Home button from the Camera app, as it blurs the screen and zooms back into place on the homescreen, you&#39;ll immediately open it back up and do it again. At least nine more times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2719664053001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2719664053001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen brings up a very Android-esque settings panel named Control Center. With Android you&#39;ll swipe down to get much the same thing.</p> <p>Along the top of Control Center are toggle switches for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and Orientation lock, with a brightness slider beneath that. Being able to change the brightness without going into the settings is a useful timesaver, albeit a timesaver that&#39;s taken its sweet time making it to iOS. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Aside from its utility, what we like best about this mini menu is the way it appears as an opaque pane of frosted glass on top of whatever is displayed beneath, whether that&#39;s the homescreen or an app that&#39;s already running. Typical Apple panache.&nbsp;</p> <p>But there&#39;s more to it than a few toggles: there&#39;s a miniature music player interface, controls for the new AirDrop wireless sharing feature, a one-button torch function (that removes the need for a dedicated torch app) plus shortcuts to the clock, calculator and camera apps. If you&#39;re one of those people who always keeps the Settings icon pinned to the bottom of the homescreen, today is the day to remove it. The same features are present on the iPad iOS 7 update (except for AirDrop, which isn&#39;t present on the iPad 3), and while it&#39;s just as useful on the big screen, the layout isn&#39;t quite as neat as on the iPhone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 control centre" alt="iOS7 control centre" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/airdrop-control-center-iOS-7.png?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Notifications and Search: Blurring the lines </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Notification pull-down that appears from the top of the screen has been given a similar makeover, at least stylistically. It&#39;s much the same in terms of what it displays, which you can specify in Settings, but the grey hessian is out in favour of coloured icons, bigger text and a blurry hint of the homescreen colours underneath. If you were hoping the Today pane was going to be a Google Now-rivalling selection of automatically gathered information that appears before you know you need it, you&#39;re going to be disappointed, but it does get a little more useful and intelligent the more you use it, and we suspect this is just the start for the feature.</p> <p>Another slight change is how the global search is accessed. Where once scrolling left from the leftmost homescreen page was your one-stop shop for searching your phone for apps, contacts and messages, now it&#39;s done with a downward swipe from any homescreen page, with the search bar then perched above your apps. You can read what I think about of it in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">review</a>, but I thought here was a good place to vent about my troublesome relationship with Siri. You can play the part of the counsellor.</p> <p>Like everyone else, Siri was fun when he first came on the scene. His fairly amusing answers to silly questions, his excuses for not being able to answer something, and the way he deflected criticism was all very charming. But before long the shtick started to become repetitive and his limitations became apparent. We went on a break.</p> <p>With the arrival of iOS 7 I decided to give Siri another go, and at first I found him to be very useful for my testing - he&#39;d take voice memos and notes without fail, change (most) settings quickly and easily, and I liked his new, wavey look. I even pretended to give a monkeys about what Stuff&#39;s Dep Ed Tom Wiggins had been saying on Twitter, and Siri promptly showed me his latest tweets (the usual rambling about gig rules, of course).</p> <p>But as with so many break-ups, it was his navigating that was the final straw. I told him to navigate to Heathrow Terminal 1 and he tried to direct me to the very centre of London. Later I told him to set a route to a street near my flat and he tried to take me to a Chinese takeaway. I suggested a different street near my house and he tried to take me to the very same Chinese takeaway. I wasn&#39;t even hungry, so this clearly wasn&#39;t a some new mind-reading tech. Besides, I&#39;m pretty sure that would have been mentioned in the iOS 7 press release.</p> <p>And when I finally got Siri to understand where I wanted to go he used the still flawed Apple Maps to plot a route straight into a 30min traffic jam. We fell out in spectacular fashion. I&#39;m not proud to admit I said some very hurtful things that stunned him into silence. And that was how the relationship ended for the second time. Siri&#39;s definitely going to have to buck his ideas up if I&#39;m ever going to take him back again.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Buttons: Clean. For example, because the standard buttons and controls no longer have backgrounds and outlines, it&#39;s not always clear if a white space or a bit of text is something to be tapped or not. At points, it feels as if usability has been ever so slightly compromised in the pursuit of design purity.&nbsp;</p> <p>That minimalist approach goes a bit too far in places, too. In the Videos app, you&#39;ll no longer see the names of your video files beneath their thumbnails. As time goes by, apps are downloaded and apps are removed, which can leave you with a dozen partially populated homescreens. It wasn&#39;t that I&#39;d fallen out of love, it was that it had a smashed front and back, with a jammed-in power button and a home button that needed four presses for anything to happen. Jumping ship to Android in the interim, I&rsquo;ve been revelling in bigger, higher res screens, calendar and notes widgets, HTC Zoe, S Health and simpler media moving &ndash; so long iPhoto.&nbsp;</p> <p>But minutes into my time with iOS 7, I was frowning at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/htc-one/review">HTC One</a> wondering what I ever saw in Sense 5, and shaking my head at the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/lg-g2/review">LG G2&rsquo;s alternative multi-tasking tricks</a>. It&rsquo;s not perfect, but iOS 7 has so many more UI delights to offer than its rivals &ndash; maybe it makes me a bit sad, but using this mobile OS has made me Smile Out Loud at least a dozen times.&nbsp;</p> <p>The camera app brings to mind retro rangefinders, without veering into skeumorphism, Control Center&rsquo;s sci-fi styling is spot-on and I just calibrated the Compass by rolling a little red ball around a circle for the second time even though I&rsquo;m chained to my desk for the afternoon. I&rsquo;m not sure I can abandon Android &ndash; I mean, burying &lsquo;Limit Ad Tracking&rsquo; in Settings is a sneaky move by Apple, and my oaf hands struggle a little with the smaller keyboard. You can tap a card to re-enter that app or swipe it up to quit it. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Behind the scenes, iOS 7 has the ability to work more intelligently with apps in the background. For example, if an app has been updated to use the new scheduling feature, when it&#39;s in the background it should only download extra content when other apps are taking a break and don&rsquo;t need the resources. That&#39;s because it relies on modern Wi-Fi radios, so it&#39;s never going to be backwards-compatible.</p> <p>But despite our grumbles, in use AirDrop is quick and simple. It&#39;s accessed as an additional option from the updated Share menu, which can be summoned whenever you find yourself dealing with compatible content, such as website URLs, map directions, pictures or video. You can set your phone or tablet to be discoverable by anyone nearby, only those in your contacts book or turn it off completely. Once someone has accepted your invitation to share, transfer is speedy and painless and the files can then be opened in the relevant app or saved to Photos. Depending on which device you&#39;re running iOS 7 on, you can add retro colour filters during and/or after shooting stills, and there are also options for correcting red eye, cropping and auto colour correction. Square format and panoramic stills are thrown in (again, on selected devices), and for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> there&#39;s a fantastically fun and easy-to-use 120fps slow-mo video mode. &nbsp;</p> <p>Once you&#39;ve taken your pics you can enjoy the new Photos browser, which arranges your shots into groups called &quot;Moments&quot;, &quot;Collections&quot; and &quot;Years&quot;, rather than the single chronologically ordered stream of the old style Camera Roll with the option to create your own albums as before. The Share option has been tidied up, with distinct rows for AirDrop, social media sharing and messaging, and another for AirPlay, AirPrint and other options. You also get the chance to add more pictures or video directly from the Share page without having to go back to the main Camera Roll &ndash; a nice touch. Many of the world&#39;s major car brands are set to include CarPlay functionality further down the line, although it&#39;s interesting to note that, at this point, the list which includes Ford, BMW and Toyota makes no mention of the VW Group (which encompases Audi, Seat and Skoda).v</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CarPlay" alt="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-7.1-review-carplay-001.jpg?1394679724" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-13"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 - Siri </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&#39;ve never been that keen on Siri. The iPhone 4 still shows a small amount of lag, but there&#39;s a big improvement, particularly, when opening folders containing groups of apps.</p> <p>There&#39;s not a whole lot else that&#39;s changed from iOS 7. The &quot;Slide to unlock&quot; text now has a shinier highlight and there seems to be a little more fluidity to the parallax wallpaper animation as you tilt your device. If you have an iPhone 5 you can set the camera to automatically switch to High Dynamic Range mode when it thinks the situation demands it (for more even exposures of high contrast or low-light scenes), the Calendar app has had a little make over and the fingerprint recognition has been improved.</p> <p>So overall, while iOS 7.1 isn&#39;t a huge update, it does fix a few things, particularly for users of older iDevices. The Z1 Compact can be a little overwhelming with its array of settings and options while the iPhone 5s will be much easier to pick up and start shooting.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s also has a genuinely cool slow motion video mode which will come in more handy than live streaming your hangover fry up on Facebook.</p> <p>In practice, the iPhone 5s still produces clearer, more detailed shots than the Z1 Compact, and you&#39;ll get better photos from it unless you want to crop into a lot of snaps post-shot - something the average upload-to-Facebook crowd will rarely do.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s&#39; dual white/amber LED flash also prduces more natural skin tones and colours.</p> <p>For most people, the iPhone 5s will be the better choice for a quick point-and-shoot snappers, thanks to its detailed, accurate shots and quick, easy-to-use controls.</p> <p><em>Winner:</em><strong>&nbsp;iPhone 5s</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="Which is better? To get it off of me, you&rsquo;d have had to prise it out of my cold dead hands. Even then I&rsquo;d have found some way to return as a zombie, eat your brains, and get my iPhone back. It did convergence right for the first time: email, web, reading, photography, video, gaming, mapping, music-making. It looked good too.</p> <p>Subsequently, I got the feeling of diminishing returns, despite Retina displays freeing my eyes from the horror of visible pixels. By the time the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-5/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5</a> arrived, upgrade enthusiasm had dwindled. I didn&rsquo;t really care, a feeling cemented by a demo model that lurked in my office for weeks while put through its paces. It was too big, too light, and the new connector irked.</p> <p>But Apple apparently laces devices with pixie dust that soaks into your skin and reformats your brain. I&rsquo;d not thoroughly enjoyed the iPhone 5 experience, but my iPhone 4s suddenly felt cramped, squat, slow and heavy.</p> <p>I started to read rumour sites about the iPhone 5&rsquo;s successor, alternating such episodes with pouring bleach into my eyes to take away the pain I was experiencing from the sheer deluge of stupid. (&ldquo;Apple rumoured to be working on seven different iPhones, two of which are made from koalas&rsquo; tears.&rdquo; &ldquo;Sources state iPhone 5s to be a pyramid that sings Tom Jones songs.&rdquo;)</p> <p>Eventually, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">iPhone 5s</a> arrived, championed by Stuff as &ldquo;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">ingenious, forward-thinking and powerful</a>&rdquo;, although the same review added that the iPhone was &ldquo;stuck in its ways&rdquo;. Two months of daily iPhone 5s use later and I&rsquo;m inclined to agree &mdash; but Apple&rsquo;s latest nonetheless reinvigorated my passion for the line.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="The iPhone 5 couldn&#039;t light my fire" alt="The iPhone 5 couldn&#039;t light my fire" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iphone-new-main%20%281%29.jpg?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="500" height="375" title="Remember this chunky thing?" alt="Remember this chunky thing?" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/iPhone-3GS_0_0.jpg?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> SCREEN SAVER </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I still hate the screen, but I also love the screen. Hate first: there&rsquo;s that nagging irritation of not quite comfortably being able to reach everywhere with a thumb when holding the device one-handed. I have to stretch a bit &mdash; a real first-world non-problem &mdash; but reason that at least I don&rsquo;t need the kind of banana fingers required to operate certain Android monsters.</p> <p>What&rsquo;s better about the bigger screen is it feels more natural for the content that&rsquo;s usually welded to my iPhone: in portrait, Twitter, Safari and other text-oriented apps show more content; games in widescreen are less obscured by fidgeting thumbs, thereby making me approximately one per cent better at <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/boson-x/id660600531" target="_blank">Boson X</a>. (If you have a Boson X addiction, you&rsquo;ll know just how terrifically important this is.)</p> <p>Like the 5 before it, the 5s&rsquo;s case design to integrate the larger display is rather clever. Apple almost managed to retain the older iPhone&rsquo;s dimensions, meaning you get a lot more screen in an only slightly longer unit. It&rsquo;s still very pocketable, even when entombed in a natty cover (or, in my case, one that looks like a cassette tape, because I&rsquo;m old). Two months in and I wouldn&rsquo;t go back &mdash; not that I could, with Apple being a one-screen-size-fits-all kind of company. An entirely true internet yarn (this one) states a certain writer won&rsquo;t notice as technology slowly degrades around him until it&rsquo;s, in technological terms, &lsquo;cooked&rsquo;. Make of that what you will &mdash; perhaps an angry frog with a warm behind should be writing this feature.</p> <p>That I perhaps stick with devices for too long means I also notice leaps in power. It was immediately apparent on first using the iPhone 5s and firing everything I could think of at it. Music apps! High-end games! Art apps! It just shrugged off my pitiful attempts to introduce lag. &ldquo; Is that all you&rsquo;ve got,&rdquo; it seemed to growl, although that might have been something I heard after one too many sessions of <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/death-ray-manta-drm/id592858193" target="_blank">Death Ray Manta</a>.</p> <p>A swift look at specs explains all. My old 4s was wheezing along with 512 MB of RAM and an 800 MHz A5 chip; the 5s boasts twice the RAM and a super-powered 1.3 GHz A7, presumably composed entirely of ground unicorn.</p> <p>There&rsquo;s an argument today&rsquo;s Apple concentrates too much on specs, notably at press events (to the point you want to hurl a Mac mini at an overly chatty exec&rsquo;s head, just to shut him up). But it&rsquo;s hard to complain too much when the result is a device practically begging you to challenge it with the newest, most powerful apps, which enable you to have fun and create new things.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="MOAR POWER" alt="MOAR POWER" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/118563_682x512_2.png?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A PRETTY PICTURE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The iPhone&rsquo;s camera was once a laughing stock, although it was primarily laughed at by point-and-shoot cameras. Over time, the iPhone point and shot &mdash; lots of photos and all of the cameras. On Flickr, it rose to the number-one spot and never relinquished it, evolving technology combining with a bewilderingly large app ecosystem to make even the most ardent Lomography advocate consider going digital.</p> <p>I realise now that my photo-taking antics had slowed with the iPhone 4s. It&rsquo;s not much cop waiting seconds for everything to warm up when life around you moves so quickly. But the iPhone 5s has nailed it, retaining the satisfying volume press to activate the shutter, but ramping up other aspects of the hardware and software.</p> <p>One big change is the weird pink fringe effect I found when using the iPhone 5 demo unit&rsquo;s flash &mdash; this appears to have been banished. The new flash has two LEDs &mdash; one each of white and amber &mdash; and software figures out a scene&rsquo;s colour temperature, determining the intensity and colour of the flash it should use. The result isn&rsquo;t always perfect, but I do more often get photos that don&rsquo;t need colour-correction.</p> <p>Then there are new toys in the form of Burst Mode (ten frames per second) and 120fps slow-motion video, previously the domain of third-party apps, and noticeable improvements to image stabilisation and speed, especially when shooting panoramas. Spec-wise, the iPhone remains nothing special on paper (although the front-facing camera is now HD, thereby excitingly showing extra wrinkles in perfect detail when using FaceTime), but the combination of hardware and software has got me taking loads of photos again, much to my Schnauzer&rsquo;s chagrin. They cunningly ignored contrary arguments, as did I &mdash; until I had my iPhone 5s for a couple of days.</p> <p>The moment it clicked was when I without thinking just plugged in the charging cable. I&rsquo;d not looked to see which way round it was, because I didn&rsquo;t need to. That might not sound like much, but small changes can make a big difference to user experience, and also, as it turns out, reduce those occasions when you&rsquo;re dead tired, bleary-eyed and trying to mash, say, a micro-USB cable into a device upside-down.</p> <p>People cleverer than I note that Lightning has many other benefits: a higher power capacity (handy for iPads); the means to add to the tech via firmware updates; increasingly common usage as a device support in docks; quality control (which ups costs but lowers risk); and bi-directional power, enabling the device to charge an accessory.</p> <p>Really, though, I&rsquo;m just happy with my never-upside-down power cables, because I&rsquo;m apparently astonishingly easy to please but fast to rile. Instead of unlocking the phone by tapping in a four-digit PIN, like some kind of caveman, casually holding a finger or thumb on the Home button for a second does the trick.</p> <p>The same&rsquo;s largely true for app purchases. This is about sweating the details and inserting some joy into technology. With the device storing an abstraction of your prints on the A7 chip and not online, the system&rsquo;s also secure, which is reassuring. It didn&rsquo;t really work.</p> <p>The Nexus 4 is a perfectly fine device, and Android does some things I wish Apple would steal, &lsquo;like an artist&rsquo; (not least the alphabetical list of on-device apps, and being able to install new apps from the web), but the experience in general just felt a bit cheap, from the plasticky and overly large device itself through to the Android operating system. It certainly wasn&rsquo;t bad, but there wasn&rsquo;t anything compelling that made me want to switch permanently.</p> <p>The iPhone 5s, while not revolutionary and perhaps while, yes, playing it safe, remains in a different ballpark &mdash; at least for my usage, which is more about getting things done and being creative than tinkering with the operating system or embedding myself so much in the Google ecosystem I legally have to start calling myself Craig Schmidt.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="A familiar face" alt="A familiar face" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/DSC01967_0.JPG?1385603528" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-7"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> APPLE OF MY EYE </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>It&rsquo;s not all plain-sailing. Also, putting the headphone port at the bottom of the device was just plain wrong, and if you disagree, you are also just plain wrong.</p> <p>Furthermore, there&rsquo;s the reality that part of the value of any item you own is in the investment. Do I like the iPhone 5s more than the 5 I had hanging around because it&rsquo;s mine, and because I paid for it? Is part of my rekindled fondness for the iPhone line rationalisation?</p> <p>Undoubtedly, but I&rsquo;m far from alone in that, and _objectively_ the iPhone 5s after a couple of months remains the best iPhone &mdash; and best smartphone &mdash; I&rsquo;ve used. The iPhone 5s runs iOS 7 without a judder or hiccup in sight.</p> <p>Numbers aren't everything however, and the Nexus 5 more than proves it by treating us to the fastest, smoothest, slickest Android experience we've ever seen, ploughing through the latest 3D games and multitasking apps like an eight-handed juggler.</p> <p>Yes the Nexus 5 has 2GB of RAM in comparison to the iPhone 5s' 1GB.
