What&#39;s involved? You sign up, download an app and you&#39;re in line to help test and review other apps on the App Store. Pretty simple, huh?</p> <p>Third-party developers can invite up to 1,000 people to beta test &ndash; an tenfold increase on Apple&#39;s originally-announced plan of just 100 testers.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/erna-mahyuni" title="View user profile.">Erna Mahyuni</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>What happens is that a developer sends out invitations, users then download the app via iTunes Connect and then download TestFlight. iOS 8 also helps notify users when the latest builds of beta apps are available, which is pretty handy compared to waiting for developer emails.</p> <p>As for updates, they&#39;re going to take a little longer due to Apple needing to vet the apps via its Beta App Review. Still, having the Big A run the rule over apps first isn&#39;t necessarily a bad thing &ndash; it reduces the likelihood of pre-release software messing up your iPhone or iPad. One of the pitfalls of Google Play is its reliance on peer review, meaning it&#39;s all too easy for malware and shady apps to sneak into the app marketplace.</p> <p>The TestFlight Beta app is <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/testflight/id899247664?mt=8" target="_blank">free on the App Store</a> but it would be a good idea to get the lowdown on the program at the <a href="https://developer.apple.com/app-store/Testflight/" target="_blank">official page</a> first.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE</strong>:<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/10-great-apps-and-games-your-iphone-6-and-iphone-6-plus/feature-0"><strong> 10 of the best apps for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus </strong></a></p> <p>[Source: <a href="http://www.maclife.com/article/news/apple_releases_testflight_app_beta_testing_public?utm_source=Social&amp;utm_medium=Twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Owned" target="_blank">Maclife</a>]</p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="567" height="425" title="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" alt="TestFlight gets you in on new iOS app betas" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/testflight%2002.jpg?1414142337" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/ios-8/testflight-gets-you-new-ios-app-betas/news#comments Apple iOS iOS 8 iOS apps iPad iPhone Fri, 24 Oct 2014 09:10:20 +0000 Stephen Graves 1451254 at http://www.stuff.tv For better or worse, Apple’s iPad line-up shows it's now a very different company http://www.stuff.tv/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Three iPad minis and two iPad Airs — here’s hoping Apple’s not heading back to the bad old days </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1000" height="750" title="eek" alt="eek" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/line-up.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>The Apple of today is a very different beast from the Apple of the mid-1990s.</p> <p>These days, pundits still bang on about Apple somehow being doomed, despite it making billions of dollars in profit every quarter, and churning out iPhones and iPads as fast as the company can sell them. However, while this is often because it makes for a clickbait headline, many within the industry remember a time when Apple really was doomed.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before Steve Jobs returned to the company, Apple was haemorrhaging money. It had a bloated product line and was obsessed with doing too much by itself &mdash; proprietary <em>everything</em> &mdash;&nbsp;and yet paid little attention to the buying user experience. If you were one of the rapidly diminishing number of people who actually wanted to buy a new Mac instead of a Windows PC, you were faced with a wall of Performas and Power Macintoshes &mdash; a bafflingly complex matrix of products with so much overlap that the best way to select your next machine was probably to pin Apple&rsquo;s product chart on a wall and lob a dart at it.</p> <p>Jobs &lsquo;thought different&rsquo;. He took a knife to Apple&rsquo;s products and didn&rsquo;t so much trim the fat as hack off hunks of meat until all that remained was the simplest and most streamlined product matrix you&rsquo;d ever seen. The idea was Apple would have only one &lsquo;consumer&rsquo; and one &lsquo;professional&rsquo; product within &lsquo;desktop&rsquo; and &lsquo;notebook&rsquo; slots, which became the iMac, Power Mac, iBook and PowerBook.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Over time, Apple as a company evolved further, embracing additional key aspects of personal computing that grabbed the imagination of the consumer, but it never lost its sense of focus. As Jobs stated during a Macworld event, &ldquo;focus is about saying no,&rdquo; even if that &ldquo;pisses off people&rdquo;. Hence, Apple continued to release what it thought its consumers&nbsp;<em>needed</em>&nbsp;rather than what they thought they&nbsp;<em>wanted</em>, restricting choice and providing only the best options.</p> <p>This notion continued as Apple shifted its own focus towards appliance computing: the iPhone and the iPad. But even as Apple&rsquo;s product line diversified, its products could still all fit on a desk. Naturally, pundits rallied against this line of thinking, arguing Apple was denying consumers &lsquo;choice&rsquo;, compared to the plentiful ranges provided by rivals, but Apple was really making things easy. As numerous studies have shown, people really aren&rsquo;t great at making choices &mdash; especially when faced with a huge number of options.</p> <p>In the context of Apple and choice, the iPad is an interesting case, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">recent events</a>&nbsp;highlight how Apple is, for better or worse, now very clearly transforming into a different company from the one Steve Jobs ran. At first, the iPad was just the iPad. You chose an amount of storage, decided whether you wanted 3G, and away you went. Gradually, colour entered the mix, and then the iPad mini. But even last year, the main choice for the consumer was size: did you want the iPad Air or the iPad mini? For the most part, the machines were identical, so the main decision you had to make was relatively simple.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H8eP99neOVs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." alt="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-first-gen.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fast forward to last week&#39;s Apple event. Choice is now abundant in the new iPad line-up, but simplicity has been obliterated. Alongside the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news" target="_blank">iPad mini 3</a> sit last year&rsquo;s models, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">iPad Air</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad mini 2</a> (previously known as the iPad mini with Retina display); the original iPad mini also lurks in the line-up. So now there are three iPad minis and two iPad Airs; additionally, the Air (2) and mini (3) no longer have parity &mdash;&nbsp;they boast different chips and capabilities.</p> <p>The new iPad mini 3 is simply an iPad mini 2, but with TouchID, for an extra 80 quid. But the iPad mini 2 only comes in 16 and 32 GB flavours, whereas the iPad mini 3 comes in 16, 64 and 128 GB options (but not 32). Similarly, the Air and Air 2 clash, Apple&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature">cynical upsell decision on new kit</a>&nbsp;making the 16 GB iPad Air 2 pricier than the 32 GB iPad Air.</p> <p>All this adds up to more choice, but also more confusion for the consumer, now faced with five models, with overlapping features and capacities. And sowing the seeds of buyer&rsquo;s doubt sometimes means baffled customers simply walk out of a store with nothing at all. It also erodes a differentiator Apple had compared to the competition: the simplicity and elegance of the buying experience.</p> <p>There are of course logical&nbsp;<em>business</em>&nbsp;reasons why Apple&rsquo;s made this decision. With the holiday season coming up, Apple&rsquo;s now covering more price-points, using older technology to combat cheaper Android tablets. It has the potential for wider sales, perhaps grabbing customers who might have plumped for a Kindle Fire or a Tesco Hudl. But bet-hedging with an overly complex line-up doesn&rsquo;t show focus, and this is a slippery slope Apple&rsquo;s been down before, only this time Steve Jobs isn&rsquo;t around to say no. Someone else on Apple&rsquo;s executive team should instead.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ipad-air-vs-ipad-air-2-should-you-upgrade/news" target="_blank">iPad Air vs class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There are two lines of thinking when it comes to tablet displays. Apple has offered a 4:3 aspect ratio on every iPad to date, which even on the original model&rsquo;s release was at odds with the then-iPhone&rsquo;s 3:2 display. By contrast, most Android tablets have aped smartphones, which have tended towards 9:16 &mdash; a TV-like 16:9 aspect ratio in landscape.</p> <p>For a smartphone, such displays make sense. Primarily designed to be used in portrait, you want a display that shows plenty of content, and where everything&rsquo;s relatively easily accessible with a thumb or two. Tablets, however, have very different use cases, which are often closer in nature to what you&rsquo;d do with a notebook.</p> <p>In landscape, widescreen tablets are perfectly suited to video playback, but their shortcomings become clearer elsewhere. If you&rsquo;re using an on-screen keyboard, the area remaining for content is reduced to a sliver; when using the device in portrait, it doesn&rsquo;t suit books and comics, or creating documents intended for paper output. Even browsing websites on a 16:9 tablet can feel sub-optimal, content not having room to breathe in portrait, but needing regular scrolling in landscape.</p> <p>In 4:3/3:4, these problems disappear. The result is more room to work, and a more natural set-up for creating and consuming most content. There are compromises &mdash; black bars above and below widescreen video, and games having a squarer viewport; but even the latter can be beneficial in strategy titles or shooters where enemies are coming at you from all angles.</p> <p>Microsoft headed somewhat in this direction with the Surface Pro 3&rsquo;s 3:2 display; but Google&#39;s Nexus 9 gets you 4:3 with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 &mdash; identical to the iPad, and at a higher resolution than on the iPad Air, due to the Nexus 9&rsquo;s smaller physical dimensions.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yYHY3MFiq1o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Nexus 9" alt="Nexus 9" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/google-nexus-9-lifestyle_0.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why the Nexus 6’s giant display is just too much </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/7-things-you-need-know-about-google-nexus-6/news">As per our write-up</a>, the Nexus 6 is essentially an embiggened Moto X, with a display that&rsquo;s a tiny smidge off of six inches. Its pixel count is almost absurdly high; the phone&#39;s 2560 x 1440 resolution means that there are more pixels packed into this smartphone than the Nexus 9 tablet. It all feels a bit excessive &mdash; another example of smartphones trying to one-up each-other on size; if this keeps up, at some point a manufacturer will realise with a shock that their new device doesn&rsquo;t actually fit through the door of the average family home.</p> <p>The argument in favour of larger displays is clear: you potentially get to see more content on the screen, or the same content but bigger. Such devices can in certain cases be more pleasurable to use, and if you&rsquo;re the kind of person who reckons you can use a smartphone as your sole computer, you&rsquo;re going to want a display larger than the tiny viewport on the likes of an iPhone 5s.</p> <p>The problem is <em>everything else</em>. In order to keep the visual fidelity high, Google&rsquo;s had to make the screen 2K. This heavily impacts on all kinds of things: it drains the battery more quickly; it makes the device pricier than it otherwise had to be; and it also potentially leads to upsampling issues when viewing 1080p content (although probably not quite to the same level as the iPhone 6 Plus under some circumstances, which may merrily upsample content to 2208 x 1242 before downsampling it again for the 1080p display&mdash;bonkers).</p> <p>Coupled with this, you end up with a flagship phone that&rsquo;s simply too big and unwieldy for many &mdash; a modern incarnation of a Dom Joly prop, but on which you can play Angry Birds. We don&rsquo;t know yet if it&rsquo;ll be prone to bendgate, but whereas Google appears to have primarily thought about the user experience with the Nexus 9, the Nexus 6 seems to merely be yet another case of &lsquo;mine&rsquo;s bigger than yours&rsquo;.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-6/review" target="_blank">Google Nexus 6 preview &ndash; everything you need to know</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wk-PY2dBKaA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="782" height="586" title="Nexus 6" alt="Nexus 6" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-6-charging_2.jpg?1413697329" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/google/how-google-got-one-screen-right-and-one-screen-wrong-nexus-9-and-nexus-6/feature#comments Google iPad Nexus 6 Nexus 9 Smartphones Tablets Fri, 17 Oct 2014 12:07:04 +0000 Craig Grannell 1450480 at http://www.stuff.tv iPad Air 2 reportedly out in October, but without a new iPad Mini alongside http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-air-2-reportedly-out-october-without-new-ipad-mini-alongside/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Report claims that Apple’s next small tablet won’t launch until early 2015 </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display" alt="iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ipadairmini_1.jpg?1411640896" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Apple has long been expected to <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-air-2s-anti-glare-screen-will-make-it-even-easier-eyes/news">debut a new version</a> of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review">iPad Air</a> this autumn, with a new <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review">iPad Mini</a> expected right alongside it. The basic control method is along the lines of <em>Papertoss</em> and <em>Flick Kick Football</em>: just swipe up and across the bottom of the screen to fire the ball back over the net.</p> <p>Beyond that you can add spin by switching direction just after contact, and the speed and length of your swing affects the power of your shot. You can also choose from two serving styles: swipe up through the ball for an almost foolproof straight hit, or double tap to tee up the ball, then let fly with all the power and spin you can muster. The latter is quite easy to fluff, so if the game is hanging by a thread it&#39;s advisable to play it safe.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="A simple &quot;flick&quot; control makes it easy to get into" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0812.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="Table Tennis Touch - learning the basics" alt="Table Tennis Touch review" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/IMG_0810_0.jpeg?1401285781" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A career in table tennis </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>On top of that solid base, Table Tennis Touch builds a game structure that elevates it way beyond those aforementioned ball flickers.</p> <p>The heart of the game is the Career mode, which is based around a series of knockout competitions. On the big screen it feels naturual to swipe with the index finger on your dominant hand. That makes some shots harder to play, but on the iPhone you can use two thumbs, which can make it easier. Owners of big hands and an iPad Mini can take their pick from either method.</p> <p>One small irritation when played on an iPhone is the way the iOS Control Centre menu tab keeps popping up. You could temporarily disable that in your main phone settings if it really got on your nerves, and it&#39;s rarely popped up in full during our games.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE: <a There is a four-finger swipe gesture, for quickly flicking back and forth between apps, but it&rsquo;s not widely known and it&rsquo;s fiddlier than drag and drop for copying, or glancing at reference material while working on a document.</p> <p>These latest rumours and the reasonable success Microsoft has had with its own split-screen system suggest that Apple could cater to all: those people who don&rsquo;t want split-screen could avoid it and any associated complexity (assuming iOS isn&rsquo;t too eager to &lsquo;snap&rsquo; apps to half the screen), and pro-oriented users could two-up apps to their heart&rsquo;s content.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="604" height="453" title="iPad Air and iPad mini" alt="iPad Air and iPad mini" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipadairmini.jpg?1400723031" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A small problem </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>But concerns remain. iOS is already fiddly when it comes to complex interactions such as copy and paste; and OS Experience, a jailbreak hack for split-screen looks hideous from a user-experience standpoint &ndash;&nbsp;Apple would have to provide something considerably superior. Even then, there&rsquo;s the question of screen-space. Even if Apple manages to nail interactions and gestures surrounding split-screen, a standard iPad carved in half would provide roughly iPhone-screen-size windows for apps, and this would be greatly reduced when the on-screen keyboard is active.</p> <p>This snag dovetails with rumours about an <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-introduce-13in-ipad-next-year/news" target="_blank">iPad Pro</a> &ndash; a large-screened sibling to the current line &ndash;&nbsp;and also that split-screen wouldn&rsquo;t be available on the smaller iPad mini. The former would be more suited to running multiple apps, while the latter would be blocked from doing so. Yet this would derail Apple&rsquo;s existing &ldquo;just the same, but smaller&rdquo; thinking for the iPad mini, fragment the ecosystem, and cause problems for developers wanting to support the new view and rigorously test across the entire iPad line. However, such a shift would hardly be unprecedented for Apple &ndash; the iPod, remember, started out as a single model, and the line evolved as the needs of those buying it changed.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VacQcbSwMCA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Back to the Mac </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>If this rumour turns out to be true, Apple&rsquo;s management of the entire process must be as close to flawless as possible, in order to not just be left with a mess: the UI needs to be intuitive and responsive; fragmentation across the line needs to be minimised; and developers need to be given as much assistance as necessary to ensure enough apps very quickly support split-screen.</p> <p>It could also do with being something that goes &lsquo;back to the Mac&rsquo; &ndash;&nbsp;OS X is a system that right now could desperately do with a split-screen mode, yet its window management dances between iOS-style full-screen and 1980s-oriented &lsquo;spray windows everywhere&rsquo;; here&rsquo;s hoping that in itself isn&rsquo;t an omen!</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-reportedly-gaining-split-screen-multitasking-ios-8/news" target="_blank">iPad is getting split-screen multitasking with iOS 8, reports say</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pVBLD3VDG5I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> <p><a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-split-screen-ios-8-multi-tasking-underscores-split-thinking-about-tablets/feature" target="_blank">read more</a></p> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-split-screen-ios-8-multi-tasking-underscores-split-thinking-about-tablets/feature#comments Apple iOS 8 iPad Tablets Tue, 20 May 2014 14:06:03 +0000 Stephen Graves 1437517 at http://www.stuff.tv iPad is getting split-screen multitasking with iOS 8, reports say http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ipad-reportedly-gaining-split-screen-multitasking-ios-8/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Finally, a response to all of those attack ads for rival tablets? </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iPad Air and mini" alt="iPad Air and mini" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/ipadairmini.jpg?1400066418" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>After last year&rsquo;s aesthetic overhaul in iOS 7, the forthcoming iOS 8 will need some kind of killer hook to stand out. In this set-up the <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/microsoft-word-for-ipad/id586447913?mt=8" name="Get Word for iPad on the App Store" target="_blank" title="Get Word for iPad on the App Store">Word for iPad app</a> works well and offers most of the functionality of the desktop equivalent.</p> <p>Because it tries to emulate as much of the desktop app it can feel less intuitive, slightly more cluttered and less touch-friendly than Apple&#39;s rival, Pages.
