However, while this is often because it makes for a clickbait headline, many within the industry remember a time when Apple really was doomed.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/craig-grannell" title="View user profile.">Craig Grannell</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Before Steve Jobs returned to the company, Apple was haemorrhaging money. It had a bloated product line and was obsessed with doing too much by itself &mdash; proprietary <em>everything</em> &mdash;&nbsp;and yet paid little attention to the buying user experience. If you were one of the rapidly diminishing number of people who actually wanted to buy a new Mac instead of a Windows PC, you were faced with a wall of Performas and Power Macintoshes &mdash; a bafflingly complex matrix of products with so much overlap that the best way to select your next machine was probably to pin Apple&rsquo;s product chart on a wall and lob a dart at it.</p> <p>Jobs &lsquo;thought different&rsquo;. He took a knife to Apple&rsquo;s products and didn&rsquo;t so much trim the fat as hack off hunks of meat until all that remained was the simplest and most streamlined product matrix you&rsquo;d ever seen. The idea was Apple would have only one &lsquo;consumer&rsquo; and one &lsquo;professional&rsquo; product within &lsquo;desktop&rsquo; and &lsquo;notebook&rsquo; slots, which became the iMac, Power Mac, iBook and PowerBook.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Over time, Apple as a company evolved further, embracing additional key aspects of personal computing that grabbed the imagination of the consumer, but it never lost its sense of focus. As Jobs stated during a Macworld event, &ldquo;focus is about saying no,&rdquo; even if that &ldquo;pisses off people&rdquo;. Hence, Apple continued to release what it thought its consumers&nbsp;<em>needed</em>&nbsp;rather than what they thought they&nbsp;<em>wanted</em>, restricting choice and providing only the best options.</p> <p>This notion continued as Apple shifted its own focus towards appliance computing: the iPhone and the iPad. But even as Apple&rsquo;s product line diversified, its products could still all fit on a desk. Naturally, pundits rallied against this line of thinking, arguing Apple was denying consumers &lsquo;choice&rsquo;, compared to the plentiful ranges provided by rivals, but Apple was really making things easy. As numerous studies have shown, people really aren&rsquo;t great at making choices &mdash; especially when faced with a huge number of options.</p> <p>In the context of Apple and choice, the iPad is an interesting case, and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news">recent events</a>&nbsp;highlight how Apple is, for better or worse, now very clearly transforming into a different company from the one Steve Jobs ran. At first, the iPad was just the iPad. You chose an amount of storage, decided whether you wanted 3G, and away you went. Gradually, colour entered the mix, and then the iPad mini. But even last year, the main choice for the consumer was size: did you want the iPad Air or the iPad mini? For the most part, the machines were identical, so the main decision you had to make was relatively simple.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">Apple iPad Air 2 hands-on review</a></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper youtube-player-wrapper"> <iframe width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H8eP99neOVs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." alt="At first, the iPad was just the iPad." src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-first-gen.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Fast forward to last week&#39;s Apple event. Choice is now abundant in the new iPad line-up, but simplicity has been obliterated. Alongside the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-air-2/review" target="_blank">iPad Air 2</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/6-things-you-need-know-todays-apple-launch/news" target="_blank">iPad mini 3</a> sit last year&rsquo;s models, the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-5/review" target="_blank">iPad Air</a> and the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-ipad-mini-2-retina/review" target="_blank">iPad mini 2</a> (previously known as the iPad mini with Retina display); the original iPad mini also lurks in the line-up. So now there are three iPad minis and two iPad Airs; additionally, the Air (2) and mini (3) no longer have parity &mdash;&nbsp;they boast different chips and capabilities.</p> <p>The new iPad mini 3 is simply an iPad mini 2, but with TouchID, for an extra 80 quid. But the iPad mini 2 only comes in 16 and 32 GB flavours, whereas the iPad mini 3 comes in 16, 64 and 128 GB options (but not 32). Similarly, the Air and Air 2 clash, Apple&rsquo;s&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-pay-more-pay-apple/feature">cynical upsell decision on new kit</a>&nbsp;making the 16 GB iPad Air 2 pricier than the 32 GB iPad Air.</p> <p>All this adds up to more choice, but also more confusion for the consumer, now faced with five models, with overlapping features and capacities. And sowing the seeds of buyer&rsquo;s doubt sometimes means baffled customers simply walk out of a store with nothing at all. It also erodes a differentiator Apple had compared to the competition: the simplicity and elegance of the buying experience.</p> <p>There are of course logical&nbsp;<em>business</em>&nbsp;reasons why Apple&rsquo;s made this decision. With the holiday season coming up, Apple&rsquo;s now covering more price-points, using older technology to combat cheaper Android tablets. It has the potential for wider sales, perhaps grabbing customers who might have plumped for a Kindle Fire or a Tesco Hudl. But bet-hedging with an overly complex line-up doesn&rsquo;t show focus, and this is a slippery slope Apple&rsquo;s been down before, only this time Steve Jobs isn&rsquo;t around to say no. Someone else on Apple&rsquo;s executive team should instead.</p> <p><strong>READ MORE:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.stuff.tv/ipad-air-vs-ipad-air-2-should-you-upgrade/news" target="_blank">iPad Air vs iPad Air 2: should you upgrade?</a></strong></p> <p><iframe frameborder="0" height="180" src="http://pages.haymarket.com/stuff_signup/enews_embed" width="300"></iframe></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Two&#039;s company, three&#039;s a crowd" alt="Two&#039;s company, three&#039;s a crowd" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/ipad-family.jpg?1413946791" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> </fieldset> http://www.stuff.tv/apple/better-or-worse-apple-s-ipad-line-shows-its-now-very-different-company/feature#comments Apple iPad iPad Air 2 iPad Mini iPad Mini 3 Tue, 21 Oct 2014 11:27:02 +0000 Craig Grannell 1450612 at http://www.stuff.tv Screw real life, let's just strap iPads to our faces and ignore the dirty dishes http://www.stuff.tv/apple/screw-real-life-lets-just-strap-ipads-our-faces-and-ignore-dirty-dishes/news <div class="field field-type-text field-field-standfirst"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The AirVR kit lets you apply an iPad Mini directly to your eyeballs because, why the hell not </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-enable-hero"> <div class="field-label">Enable hero:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Enable full width image </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-main-image"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_main_image" width="600" height="450" title="Cool hat bro" alt="Screw real life, let&#039;s just strap iPads to our faces and ignore the dirty dishes" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/images/news/airvr.jpg?1410948326" /> </div> </div> </div> <p>Stuff&#39;s <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-6l/review" target="_blank">iPhone 6 Plus</a> reviews are up (and well worth a read), but let&#39;s not ignore other crucial developments in Apple world either.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/esat-dedezade" title="View user profile.">Esat Dedezade</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>A better alternative is the AirVR+, which is designed for the smaller iPhone 6 Plus, which looks substantially less ridiculous.</p> <p>There are also a few apps thrown in for good measure, including a virtual photo gallery and a movie app which lets you enjoy content like 3D YouTube videos in a virtual cinema.</p> <p>The PanoVR app will let you revisit places you&#39;ve visited with 360&deg; a little like the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/android/4-reasons-youll-really-really-want-htc-one-m8/feature">LED Flip case for the HTC One (M8)</a>.</p> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-byline"> <div class="field-label">Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sam-kieldsen" title="View user profile.">Sam Kieldsen</a> </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-group-sections"><legend>News Section</legend><fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-0"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Active or passive lighting </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One method detailed is a Smart Cover that incorporated low-power LEDs or electroluminescent panels. These can light up to show notifications even when the cover is closed &ndash; but will of course require power. Apple suggests the case could be connected to the iPad via some new form of MagSafe cable or contacts able to carry electricity, or else use its own battery and some form of inductive charging.</p> <p>Apple also outlines a passive Smart Cover with translucent portions that would allow light to shine through from the iPad&rsquo;s screen. This solves the power issue because the screen&rsquo;s own backlight is used.</p> <p>Both the active and passive solutions would use colours, symbols, shapes and words to create notifications. For example, if the iPad user receives a new email, a letter symbol could appear on the front of the Smart Cover. If it&rsquo;s an email marked as important, the symbol could be larger, or coloured red. Alerts could be dismissed through use of the iPad&rsquo;s hardware controls like volume or power.</p> <p>As always with patents, it shouldn&rsquo;t be assumed that the things described within will ever become products. However, they can give an indication of what might appear in the future. Plenty of the early bugs have been shown the door too.&nbsp;Cue a collective sigh of relief from panicked app developers.</p> <p>Apple&rsquo;s stuck with the concept of horizontally scrolling pages of tiled icons, so in terms of basic use there&#39;s nothing crazy to get your head around when you approach iOS 7. One of the first things you&rsquo;ll notice is the design tweak when opening and closing apps. Now when you select an app, its &quot;splash screen&quot; emanates from the app icon to fill the screen as the icons around it are pushed aside. It&#39;s such a subtle change that you&#39;ll wonder, &quot;Wasn&#39;t it always that way?&quot;.</p> <p>Similarly, when you close an app with the Home button, the app&#39;s icon zooms back into its place in the grid, and when you unlock your iPhone, the homescreen icons fly into place with a little more panache. It&#39;s not like anyone ever criticised Apple&#39;s transitions, but with ever slicker Android skins and launchers hitting the market, Apple&rsquo;s upped its game to stay a step ahead.</p> <p>And iOS 7 deserves some quality getting-to-know-you time as the attention to detail is beyond anything we&rsquo;ve ever seen on a mobile OS. The animation for downloading apps is a timer wheel revealing more of the icon underneath, almost making you wish iMovie would take longer than 30 seconds to appear. It&rsquo;ll have designers drowning in drool at the very least. And the first time you hit the Home button from the Camera app, as it blurs the screen and zooms back into place on the homescreen, you&#39;ll immediately open it back up and do it again. At least nine more times.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="video-wrapper brightcove-player-wrapper"> <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script> <script src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/APIModules_all.js"></script> <div class="brightcove-player"> <object id="myExperience-2719664053001" class="BrightcoveExperience"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /> <param name="playerID" value="" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAAAEgPmGlk~,Fzd-TvXcznw-P3piHaryQBMeIzWITldz" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="2719664053001" /> <param name="autoStart" value="" /> <param name="htmlFallback" value="true" /> <param name="includeAPI" value="true" /> <param name="templateLoadHandler" value="brightcoveTemplateLoaded" /> <param name="width" value="640px" /> <param name="height" value="360px" /> </object> <!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. Swiping up from the bottom of the screen brings up a very Android-esque settings panel named Control Center. With Android you&#39;ll swipe down to get much the same thing.</p> <p>Along the top of Control Center are toggle switches for Airplane mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb and Orientation lock, with a brightness slider beneath that. Being able to change the brightness without going into the settings is a useful timesaver, albeit a timesaver that&#39;s taken its sweet time making it to iOS. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Aside from its utility, what we like best about this mini menu is the way it appears as an opaque pane of frosted glass on top of whatever is displayed beneath, whether that&#39;s the homescreen or an app that&#39;s already running. Typical Apple panache.&nbsp;</p> <p>But there&#39;s more to it than a few toggles: there&#39;s a miniature music player interface, controls for the new AirDrop wireless sharing feature, a one-button torch function (that removes the need for a dedicated torch app) plus shortcuts to the clock, calculator and camera apps. If you&#39;re one of those people who always keeps the Settings icon pinned to the bottom of the homescreen, today is the day to remove it. The same features are present on the iPad iOS 7 update (except for AirDrop, which isn&#39;t present on the iPad 3), and while it&#39;s just as useful on the big screen, the layout isn&#39;t quite as neat as on the iPhone.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 control centre" alt="iOS7 control centre" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/airdrop-control-center-iOS-7.png?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Notifications and Search: Blurring the lines </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The Notification pull-down that appears from the top of the screen has been given a similar makeover, at least stylistically. It&#39;s much the same in terms of what it displays, which you can specify in Settings, but the grey hessian is out in favour of coloured icons, bigger text and a blurry hint of the homescreen colours underneath. If you were hoping the Today pane was going to be a Google Now-rivalling selection of automatically gathered information that appears before you know you need it, you&#39;re going to be disappointed, but it does get a little more useful and intelligent the more you use it, and we suspect this is just the start for the feature.</p> <p>Another slight change is how the global search is accessed. Where once scrolling left from the leftmost homescreen page was your one-stop shop for searching your phone for apps, contacts and messages, now it&#39;s done with a downward swipe from any homescreen page, with the search bar then perched above your apps. Give it a day or two and it becomes second nature.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 Notifications pull down menu" alt="iOS7 Notifications pull down menu" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Notifications-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-2"> <div class="field-label">Image #2:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_2" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 search" alt="iOS 7 iPhone search" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Search-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> My week of bickering with Siri </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>I&#39;ve been lucky enough to have been living with the iPhone 5s for about a week now. You can read what I think about of it in our <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review" target="_blank">review</a>, but I thought here was a good place to vent about my troublesome relationship with Siri. You can play the part of the counsellor.</p> <p>Like everyone else, Siri was fun when he first came on the scene. His fairly amusing answers to silly questions, his excuses for not being able to answer something, and the way he deflected criticism was all very charming. But before long the shtick started to become repetitive and his limitations became apparent. We went on a break.</p> <p>With the arrival of iOS 7 I decided to give Siri another go, and at first I found him to be very useful for my testing - he&#39;d take voice memos and notes without fail, change (most) settings quickly and easily, and I liked his new, wavey look. I even pretended to give a monkeys about what Stuff&#39;s Dep Ed Tom Wiggins had been saying on Twitter, and Siri promptly showed me his latest tweets (the usual rambling about gig rules, of course).</p> <p>But as with so many break-ups, it was his navigating that was the final straw. I told him to navigate to Heathrow Terminal 1 and he tried to direct me to the very centre of London. Later I told him to set a route to a street near my flat and he tried to take me to a Chinese takeaway. I suggested a different street near my house and he tried to take me to the very same Chinese takeaway. I wasn&#39;t even hungry, so this clearly wasn&#39;t a some new mind-reading tech. Besides, I&#39;m pretty sure that would have been mentioned in the iOS 7 press release.</p> <p>And when I finally got Siri to understand where I wanted to go he used the still flawed Apple Maps to plot a route straight into a 30min traffic jam. We fell out in spectacular fashion. I&#39;m not proud to admit I said some very hurtful things that stunned him into silence. And that was how the relationship ended for the second time. Siri&#39;s definitely going to have to buck his ideas up if I&#39;m ever going to take him back again.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/tom-parsons" title="View user profile.">Tom Parsons</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Buttons: Clean. For example, because the standard buttons and controls no longer have backgrounds and outlines, it&#39;s not always clear if a white space or a bit of text is something to be tapped or not. At points, it feels as if usability has been ever so slightly compromised in the pursuit of design purity.&nbsp;</p> <p>That minimalist approach goes a bit too far in places, too. In the Videos app, you&#39;ll no longer see the names of your video files beneath their thumbnails. It&#39;s a bit of an oversight, so we&#39;re hopeful that it&#39;s just a glitch that&#39;ll be fixed in future.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 iPhone interface" alt="iOS7 live wallpapers" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Wallpaper-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Carry on Tweaking </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Some of the design changes appear to have been made purely for the sake of change. This looks a bit smarter and less cluttered but it slows the process of finding and launching an app down a touch.</p> <p>It&#39;s a bit frustrating to see this sort of change being made when there&#39;s more important work to be done, such as giving the user a simple and intelligent method of tidying up app icons automatically. As time goes by, apps are downloaded and apps are removed, which can leave you with a dozen partially populated homescreens. It&#39;s a problem that&#39;s been with us since day one, so it&#39;s strange that nothing&rsquo;s been done about it.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 app folders" alt="9 apps per folder" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/AppFolders-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-title"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Why iOS 7 has made me want an iPhone in my life again </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-box-out-body-text"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Body Text:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Six months ago I gave up on my aged iPhone once and for all, consigning it to a long stint in the Gadget Trunk. It&rsquo;s not perfect, but iOS 7 has so many more UI delights to offer than its rivals &ndash; maybe it makes me a bit sad, but using this mobile OS has made me Smile Out Loud at least a dozen times.&nbsp;</p> <p>The camera app brings to mind retro rangefinders, without veering into skeumorphism, Control Center&rsquo;s sci-fi styling is spot-on and I just calibrated the Compass by rolling a little red ball around a circle for the second time even though I&rsquo;m chained to my desk for the afternoon. I&rsquo;m not sure I can abandon Android &ndash; I mean, burying &lsquo;Limit Ad Tracking&rsquo; in Settings is a sneaky move by Apple, and my oaf hands struggle a little with the smaller keyboard. But iOS 7 and the slow-mo camera skills of the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> could prove too tempting.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-userreference field-field-box-out-byline"> <div class="field-label">Box Out Byline:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/users/sophie-charara" title="View user profile.">Sophie Charara</a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-5"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Multi-tasking: House Of Cards </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>Another element borrowed from a rival OS is the new multi-tasking system, which owes a lot to the ill-fated <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/blackberry/blackberry-playbook/review">BlackBerry PlayBook</a>. Also seen in previous versions of HTC Sense, a double press of the Home button now displays a horizontally scrolling carousel of cards, each of which represents an app that&#39;s currently running in the background, or one that has been recently. You can tap a card to re-enter that app or swipe it up to quit it. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>Behind the scenes, iOS 7 has the ability to work more intelligently with apps in the background. For example, if an app has been updated to use the new scheduling feature, when it&#39;s in the background it should only download extra content when other apps are taking a break and don&rsquo;t need the resources. The main benefit of this should be increased battery life when multi-tasking.&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" alt="iOS7 multitasking, iPhone" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/Multitasking-iPhone.jpg?1394793372" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-6"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> The browser: full screen and fancy </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>One big change is the built-in Safari web browser, which now has a frameless display on the iPhone, with controls for forward, back, sharing, bookmarks and new tabs popping up along the bottom of the screen when you scroll to the top or bottom of a page. This Wi-Fi-based device-to-device file transfer system only works between certain iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches at the moment, not between iThings and Macs which is disappointing as it could have streamlined the process of offloading pics and video shot on your phone, or loading up your device with music and video from a Mac without connecting via iTunes.&nbsp;</p> <p>AirDrop compatibility is limited to a small number of recent iThings (the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/apple-iphone-5/review">iPhone 5</a>, <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5c/review">5C</a> and <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">5S</a>, plus the iPad 4, iPad Mini and 5th-gen iPod Touch), which for now will grate with anyone who also has an iPad 3, iPhone 4S or older devices still in use around the home. That&#39;s because it relies on modern Wi-Fi radios, so it&#39;s never going to be backwards-compatible.</p> <p>But despite our grumbles, in use AirDrop is quick and simple. It&#39;s accessed as an additional option from the updated Share menu, which can be summoned whenever you find yourself dealing with compatible content, such as website URLs, map directions, pictures or video. You can set your phone or tablet to be discoverable by anyone nearby, only those in your contacts book or turn it off completely. Once someone has accepted your invitation to share, transfer is speedy and painless and the files can then be opened in the relevant app or saved to Photos. Swapping between modes is done with the flick of a finger across the screen, and there&#39;s now a sort of &quot;Instagram Lite&quot; built in. Depending on which device you&#39;re running iOS 7 on, you can add retro colour filters during and/or after shooting stills, and there are also options for correcting red eye, cropping and auto colour correction. Square format and panoramic stills are thrown in (again, on selected devices), and for the <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/iphone-5s/review">iPhone 5S</a> there&#39;s a fantastically fun and easy-to-use 120fps slow-mo video mode. &nbsp;</p> <p>Once you&#39;ve taken your pics you can enjoy the new Photos browser, which arranges your shots into groups called &quot;Moments&quot;, &quot;Collections&quot; and &quot;Years&quot;, rather than the single chronologically ordered stream of the old style Camera Roll with the option to create your own albums as before. The Share option has been tidied up, with distinct rows for AirDrop, social media sharing and messaging, and another for AirPlay, AirPrint and other options. You also get the chance to add more pictures or video directly from the Share page without having to go back to the main Camera Roll &ndash; a nice touch. Sure, you can change the wallpaper on the home and lockscreen to tone down the initial shock of iOS 7&rsquo;s colour scheme but plenty of stalwarts stay pretty much the same &ndash; like the excellent and eerily accurate keyboard.&nbsp;</p> <p>By refusing to add a top layer of social media feeds, news tickers and weather forecasts, Apple has kept the focus on apps, which it clearly recognises as one of the major selling points of iThings over Android rivals. A more sparky, widget-based front end would most likely have pushed these gems into the wings, and that&#39;s something we&#39;d hate to see happen. However, if 90% of your phone and tablet use is based around Facebook, Twitter, music, video and the web, it&#39;s unlikely that this latest edition of iOS is going to light your fire.</p> <p>As a family oriented OS it&#39;s still unbeatable, and remains a far safer, less vulnerable environment than the more liberal but less disciplined wolrd of Android.</p> <p>It&#39;s no longer a question of which is the best OS, it&#39;s a matter of which is the best for you. The car&#39;s touchscreen or hardware controls - such as knobs, dials and buttons in the central column or steering wheel - can be used to control certain compatible apps running on the iPhone. For instance, Siri can be summoned and ordered, music can be selected and played, and if you see fit to replace your existing in-car sat-nav with Apple&#39;s own Maps app, that can be done too.</p> <p>Right now that&#39;s not something that will impact greatly on the lives of the masses, but it&#39;s an important investment in the future. Many of the world&#39;s major car brands are set to include CarPlay functionality further down the line, although it&#39;s interesting to note that, at this point, the list which includes Ford, BMW and Toyota makes no mention of the VW Group (which encompases Audi, Seat and Skoda).v</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="CarPlay" alt="Apple iOS 7 review CarPlay" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/apple-ios-7.1-review-carplay-001.jpg?1394679724" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-13"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> iOS 7.1 - Siri </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>We&#39;ve never been that keen on Siri. The iPhone 4 still shows a small amount of lag, but there&#39;s a big improvement, particularly, when opening folders containing groups of apps.</p> <p>There&#39;s not a whole lot else that&#39;s changed from iOS 7. The &quot;Slide to unlock&quot; text now has a shinier highlight and there seems to be a little more fluidity to the parallax wallpaper animation as you tilt your device. If you have an iPhone 5 you can set the camera to automatically switch to High Dynamic Range mode when it thinks the situation demands it (for more even exposures of high contrast or low-light scenes), the Calendar app has had a little make over and the fingerprint recognition has been improved.</p> <p>So overall, while iOS 7.1 isn&#39;t a huge update, it does fix a few things, particularly for users of older iDevices. It’s thin and lightweight (a mere 308g), and the bezel surrounding the screen is tiny; we reckon it's the best-looking iPad yet.</p> <p>The plastic-dominated Google Nexus 7 doesn’t give the impression of being quite so solid or “premium” a product, but it does feel better in your hand than the Mini – it's lighter (290g) and can be held one-handed for the duration of a movie with no wrist-spraining issues. It's definitely closer in build quality to the iPad Mini than the original Nexus 7. It’s lighter, thinner and narrower than the previous Nexus 7, but retains a similarly soft-touch, slightly rubbery back.</p> <p>The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 (340g) is more plasticky still, shiny white and accented by faux metal touches. While we wouldn't call it ugly, it's certainly the least attractive and well-built of the three models, with a bit of a "my first tablet" feel to it.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPad Mini</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-hcmvideofield-video field-field-brightcove-video"> <div class="field-label">Video ID/URL:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <div class="messages warning">This video is not currently supported.</div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Build quality – Nexus 7 2" alt="Build quality – Nexus 7 2" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-build.jpg?1377506692" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-1"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Screen </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The original <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/google/google-nexus-7/review">Nexus 7</a>, with a 7in screen and 1280 x 800 resolution, already had the beating of the iPad Mini with its 1024 x 768 7.9in display – at least when it comes to pixel density and sharpness – and Google has upped its game with the second-gen Nexus 7. The new model has a 7in 1920 x 1200 display, giving it a pixel density of 323ppi to the iPad Mini’s 162ppi. The performance has been boosted too: it’s now able to display 30 percent more colours. In our review we note that it "can show films in true 1080p HD, and they look superb - far better than any other tablet of this size".</p> <p>The iPad Mini, however, does have a far larger screen, with around 30 percent extra space. And its colour reproduction and contrast are excellent. The extra screen real estate does, in our opinion, make for a better tablet app experience – while the Nexus 7's size (barely bigger than a phablet) makes it better for media consumption (videos, ebooks etc.). However, as we say in our review, "you'll feel a little let down by its 1024x768 pixel count".</p> <p>The Galaxy Note 8.0 has a bigger screen than even the iPad Mini, and its 8in display marks it out as something that can be used for work rather than just play. There is, of course, a excellent S-Pen stylus for sketching, note-scribbling and more. Our review notes its "good contrast and vibrant colours" (the iPad's colour reproduction comes across as somewhat more natural, however), but in comparison to the Nexus 7 the 1280 x 800 resolution gives icons and text "a little fuzziness on close inspection".</p> <p><strong>Winner: Nexus 7</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="Screen – iPad Mini" alt="Screen – iPad Mini" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-screen.jpg?1377506692" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-2"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Processing power </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>The new Nexus 7 has a 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 at its heart, accompanied by 2GB of RAM. It’ll be interesting to see how the next iPad Mini (possibly being unveiled in September) holds up against the new Nexus 7. The current model has fewer pixels to push and thus feels nippy for most tasks, only stuttering occasionally – when viewing 3D maps for example.</p> <p>The Note 8.0 is possibly the nippiest performer of the three, and excels at multi-tasking. As our review says, it's "speedy and smooth – whether you’re careering around Asphalt 7 or watching an HD movie on one half of the screen while planning your escape via Google Maps on the other".</p> <p><strong>Winner: Galaxy Note 8.0<br /></strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="940" height="705" title="Processing power – Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" alt="Processing power – Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/samsung-galaxy-note-8.0-review-1_0.jpg?1377506692" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-3"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Operating system </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>There was a time when Android couldn’t touch iOS in the usability stakes, but that’s no longer the case. With Jelly Bean, Google’s OS has finally reached a place where it can be talked about in the same breath as Apple’s: a smooth, crisp and lag-free interface. The new Nexus 7 comes with Android 4.3 (in fact it’s the first device to do so), which sports slightly more polish as well as a handful of new features, parental controls (you can prevent profiles accessing certain apps and making in-app purchases). Being a Nexus device, the OS is devoid of any third-party embellishments – it’s pure Google, and a slicker experience for it. The issue here is apps; as we note in our review: "Google really needs to be pushing developers to add greater support for larger, more pixel-tastic screens if it hopes to defeat Apple in the tablet battle."</p> <p>iOS 6 is on board the iPad Mini, and it’s moved beyond its early issues (chiefly Maps, which you thankfully no longer have to use) to become just as intuitive and polished as previous versions. It’s more of a walled garden, more tightly controlled than Android, but for some that’s preferable. iOS has the better range of available apps too, especially when it comes to those designed specifically for tablets. As we say in our review, the iPad Mini feels more versatile because of the "greater interaction and creativity" afforded by its apps. And <a href="http://www.stuff.tv/apple/ios-7-bold-new-direction-or-flat-fashion-victim/feature">iOS 7</a>, the biggest change in terms of visual design from a version of the OS yet, is just around the corner.</p> <p>The Galaxy Note 8.0 only comes with Android 4.1.2, over which Samsung has slathered its own touches. So really it's lagging behind the Nexus 7, which offers the very latest Android version. However, some of Samsung's apps are impressive, such as Multi-Screen: this multi-tasking feature now supports Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Maps and MX Player as well as Samsung’s own apps.</p> <p><strong>Winner: iPad Mini</strong></p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image"> <div class="field-label">Image #1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image" width="1200" height="900" title="OS – Google Nexus 7 2 Android" alt="OS – Google Nexus 7 2 Android" src="http://images.cdn.stuff.tv/sites/stuff.tv/files/nexus-7-2-vs-ipad-mini-os.jpg?1377506692" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-make-full-width"> <div class="field-label">Make full width:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Do not make full width </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> <fieldset class="content-multigroup-wrapper content-multigroup-4"><div class="field field-type-number-integer field-field-section-paginate"> <div class="field-label">Paginate on this section:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Don't paginate </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-title"> <div class="field-label">Title:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Camera </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-body"> <div class="field-label">Body:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <p>While the original Nexus 7 was pretty pathetic in the snapper stakes, the new model has a 5MP camera on the rear and a 1.2MP camera on the front for Google Hangouts. While all three share a megapixel count, the Note 8.0 and Nexus 7's images come out fairly dull and muted in anything but bright light, while Apple's camera fares slightly – ever so slighty – better; in decent light, it's on a par with the iPhone 4's snapper.
